Here is what 5/6C took from
the experience!
Bruce Pascoe, author of ‘Dark Emu’
taught us that in the next 2 to 3 years
Australia will be eating the plant
called yam. There are 3 parts to a
yam, the young, the mother and the
Grandmother. The mother and
Grandmother you do not eat. They
are put back into the ground to
enable more to grow. You clean and
eat the young. They will be a healthy
vegetable of our future.
Keana B-W
Bruce told us about Aboriginal
history. He told us that the
Aboriginals were the first to create
bread and society. He also told us
about his book ‘Dark Emu’ which
explains all this.
Rachael C
When we went to the Library, we
learnt about a new plant that needs
nothing to grow and about his new
book ‘Dark Emu’. I also learnt how to
make people feel welcome in
Australia.
Bronte W
We learnt about Australian History
and lots more. A man called Bruce
told us about special rocks with a
special hole around it. We also learnt
about how the Aboriginals made
wheat in the desert and that they are
bringing back special food, which will
be ready for production in a few
years.
Tex F When we went to the Write Around
the Murray Festival, a man named
Bruce Pascoe taught us that
Aboriginal people yielded fields from
Melbourne to Adelaide and they were
the inventors of bread & villages.
Ciara S-W
I learnt that the Aboriginals were the
first to make
bread. Everyone
thought it was
the Egyptians but
it was really the
Aboriginals.
There is also a
grain with lots of
nutrients that
doesn’t need to
be watered much
& doesn’t need
pesticide and
grows perfectly
in our Australian
climate.
Pheobe G
I learnt that vegetables like potatoes
are called yams and the Aboriginals
had to dig 1 and a half metres to get
to them. They are very healthy and
will be sold in stores in a few years
time.
Tahlia L
Aboriginals were the first to make
bread. Also the Aboriginals helped
Charles Sturt and other explorers and
they even helped the horses.
Morgan R
I learnt that the Aboriginal people are
Bruce Pascoe is of Bunrong, Yuin
and Tasmanian heritage. His
recent non-fiction book, Dark
Emu, Black Seeds: agriculture or
accident? Won the 2016 NSW
Premier’s Book of the Year.
Bruce is currently working on a
children’s version of Dark Emu.
It helps tell a different story to
long held beliefs about
Aboriginal hunter-gather
societies. Bruce talked about
Aboriginal agriculture, why we
ignored it & how we can re-
discover it. Bruce presented
important revelations and
