EASTER FLOWERS: $1,715.00
HOLY THURSDAY: $1,350.00
GOOD FRIDAY: $768.00
Thank you for your generosity
A HOLY WEEK REFLECTION – AN EASTERTIME HOPE
In two weeks, I’ll return to the series on the New Roman Missal with more observations concerning the prayer we celebrate together day af-ter day. But for now, I thought I’d offer a simple reflection on the past, present and future.
The Triduum at St. Joseph is a most impressive time, primarily because of your reverence and prayerful participation. Before I came here, it had been many years since I had seen so many participating in the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. The evening service of Good Friday wasn’t so well-attended, but I know that many came to pray The Way of the Cross in the afternoon, so the attendance at the com-bined services would have nearly filled the church.
The Veneration of the Cross at the Good Friday Solemn Celebration of the Lord’s Passion and Death is always so moving because I have the privi-lege of watching parishioners of all ages—from toddlers led by their parents to seniors with canes—come forward to reverence the Cross. I know the pains and struggles of some, but I can only begin to imagine the worries & challenges that others bring to the Cross of Jesus—as well as prayers of gratitude for blessings received. I’m writing this before the celebration of the great Easter Vigil (and hoping that the rain holds off!); but I know that even if the church isn’t overflowing for this long and astonishingly beautiful night of prayer, the spirit of our community, supported by the beautiful sounds of our Music Ministry and enhanced by the creativity and hard work of our Liturgy Environment Commit-tee, will be a fitting conclusion to the great Three Days.
But now, we’re just at the beginning of Eastertime, which reaches its climax in the Solemnity of Pentecost on June 4th. It’s so important to re-member that, while the Church invites us to spend forty days in more intense prayer, fasting and almsgiving during Lent, she gives us fifty days to celebrate the new life which is ours through the dying and ris-ing of Jesus. This year in particular, as we recognize the gift that our school has been to the parish for over ninety years and honor its last weeks of service to our community, we need to embrace more than ever the promise of new life with which our Risen Lord has blessed us.
The Paschal Mystery teaches us that death is never the last word in our spiritual vocabulary. In the closing of this chapter in the life of our par-ish, a new chapter begins—with a re-energized Religious Education program, the possibility of a revived Youth Ministry program, continu-ing and perhaps expanded Adult Formation, a new Parish Pastoral Council and God only knows what else. And that’s just it: only God knows what blessings will be ours in the coming months and years. It’s up to all of us to trust in God’s grace at work in our lives, to embrace the enlivening power of the Holy Spirit, and to walk confidently with the Lord Jesus whose risen life we share.

GOSPEL READING John 20:19-31 Thomas believes because he sees Jesus.
FAMILY CONNECTION Many of us can relate to Thomas’s response to the news that the disci-ples had seen Jesus. We want to see for ourselves too, but we grow in faith, trusting the experience and
knowledge of others.
Many of us have heard the saying “Seeing is believing.” As your family gathers, take some time to consider what that saying means. What are some things we believe because we see them? Is there anything we be-lieve without seeing? Today’s Gos-pel reminds us that faith sometimes asks us to believe things we cannot see with our eyes. Read today’s Gos-pel, John 19:19-31, with your family. Think about Thomas’s response to the reports about the risen Lord. Is Thomas’s doubt reasonable? How does Jesus respond to Thomas? Je-sus grants Thomas the evidence that Thomas needs to believe, but Jesus also affirms the faith of those who will be called upon to believe without first-hand experience. We are among those whom Jesus calls blessed. Discuss with your family the basis of each member’s faith in Jesus—the witness of the first disci-ples, the Gospels, the continuing activity of the Holy Spirit, the com-
Easter Flower Offering envelopes are available at the church exits. You will notice that the envelopes have a line for “given in memory of….” so that you can remember a departed loved one with your flower offering.
We will print the names of those being remembered in the bulletin each week as they are received. So please return your Easter Flower offering envelope in the regular collection or drop it off at the rectory. They will re-main available until Trinity Sunday on June 11th.

2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER; SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY
"Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'" Three times in today's Gospel, Jesus speaks these words to his disciples. He knew they were in need of peace! Following the Crucifixion, they had huddled in fear, hiding behind locked doors, "for fear of the Jews." But the risen Christ burst into this prison of anxiety to set the disciples free.
We may wonder why, after his first greeting of peace, Jesus immediately showed the disciples the wounds of his crucifixion, still present in his now glorified body. Why would he speak of peace and then show them the scars from the violence of the cross? Perhaps it is because those wounds earned our forgiveness. And this forgiveness is our peace.
Although we may not suffer from the fear of martyrdom as these first disciples did, we all need the peace that comes from being forgiven, and from forgiv-ing. Our sins enslave us by preventing us from experiencing the fullness of life. But Jesus' mercy is greater than our sins. He wants to forgive us. And, as he taught us, we are supposed to "forgive those who trespass against us" as well. Perhaps we harbor grudges towards neighbors or family members who have hurt us. We are called to extend forgiveness to them, just as Christ ex-tends forgiveness to us. In this way, we can cooperate with Christ by spread-ing peace to others. "As the Father has sent me, so I send you," he told the disciples gathered in the room. We too are sent to be messengers of Christ's peace and mercy.
Especially today, on this Sunday of Divine Mercy, may we accept from Jesus his promise of forgiveness. Then, we will truly be able to "go in peace."
