The weekend collections for
June 22nd & 23rd will be
printed in the July 7th bulletin. SUMMER FLOWERS AND SUMMER STUDY
After writing last weekend’s Thanks Times Three article, I realized there really should have been an fourth thank-you, and it goes to the wonderful, hard-working women (and at least one man) who form our Gardening Team. I could begin to name them, but I’ve learned the hard way how dangerous that can be if I forget someone, especially since garden improvements sometimes seem to occur overnight and I’m never sure just who might have been responsible.
At any rate, you don’t have to look far to appreciate the beautiful results of their hard work and gardening know-how. Every sea-son brings new wonders and every year sees a variety of addi-tions and improvements. Several new shrubs have been added this year, some of which will provide color and fragrance later in the summer. Feel free to walk around the rectory and the church to appreciate them all because some are hidden away if you only pass by along Dixie Highway. We are truly blessed to have such generous and talented volunteers who make it possible for the parish to receive a Homewood Beautification Award honoring their work each year. Many thanks!
And regarding Summer Study…. One of the topics at the George-town Scripture Institute this year was the book of Revelation which is central to this year’s Adult Formation (Bible Study) se-ries on Biblical Eschatology. The four lectures presented by a re-nowned Presbyterian biblical scholar added a whole new batch of insights for me and I hope to include as many as possible in the series beginning a week from this Tuesday. That means that the overview you see elsewhere in this bulletin might include ad-ditional passages, particularly in sessions one, three and four; I’m working on those additions now. But if I can’t fit the new material into the current schedule, I might add another week, pushing the final session to August 13. If you come to the first session on Tuesday, July 9, you’ll find out what I’ve decided. Since the running time of each session in this series is a bit shorter than in the past—probably somewhere between sixty and ninety minutes—my hope is to keep it to five sessions and squeeze in the new material where appropriate.
So enjoy the beauty of the summer wherever you find it. You can certainly discover it right here at St. Joseph.

FAMILY CONNECTION Parents are always striving to help
P a r i s h o f S a i n t J o s e p h • H o m e w o o d , I L 9 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,At the center of our faith is the conviction that God loves us and calls us to love one another. God gives us a sign of his love and affection for us in giving us priests who serve as our spiritual fathers. They lead our parishes. They offer us support and en-couragement in times of need. So often, without thinking of themselves, they serve with great generosity the people entrusted to their care. Now, this weekend we have an opportunity to ex-press our gratitude for this gift that we have received. We will take up a special collection to sup-port the priests who have supported us across our lifetime. This collection benefits both our ac-tive and retired priests and is directed to the Priests' Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA).The PRMAA supports our 500 active and 225 retired diocesan priests of the Archdio-cese of Chicago. PRMAA provides for the healthcare needs of our active priests as well as the medical and housing needs of our retired priests. This is the only collection that supports the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. It is separate and distinct from other initiatives forretired religious order priests, sisters, and brothers. The active priests of the Archdiocese serve through-out Cook and Lake counties by proclaiming the Word of God, celebrating the sacraments, and offering a shepherd's care to our faith communities. Many retired priests continue to serve in their own way and have become indispensable resources for our communities. The health and well-being of all our priests are integral to their ability to work for us and serve our growth in faith.Join me, then, in making a generous contribution to this weekend's second collection to support our priests. Let it be a sign of gratitude to them and to the Lord for the priestly ministry which has benefited all of us.Sincerely yours in Christ,
