Will Tumberger, Calvin Smith, Dave Pirkle, Mike Canevello, Tucker Brady, Dylan Jones, Tom Zoeckler, John Belovich, and Robert Anderson will all be honored before the Duhawks take on the Luther College Norse. This particular senior class has endured adversity through multiple coaching changes, as well as tough seasons. However, each of them has been vital to this season’s turnaround. The last time the Duhawks took on Luther on the Rock Bowl they were victorious in the 2012 homecoming game 28-25. NEARING MORE RECORDS … Last weekend against University of Dubuque, senior Nate Even tallied 11 receptions for 231 yards, inching him eight receptions and 41 yards short of Kendall Griffin’s 1991 records. Last weekend especially, Even did a lot of his damage on yards after the catch (YAC), constantly getting past the Spartan cornerbacks. This weekend could be a very special one for both Even and the Loras football team if he were to break the 23 year old records. TURNOVERS HURT IN LOSS … With several opportunities to score in their loss to University of Dubuque, the Duhawks instead cost themselves and turned the ball over four times. Three of the four interceptions came by way of interception from freshman quarterback Robert Kelly, and the other came on a second half fumble by senior running back Calvin Smith. Two of the four Loras turnovers occurred in Spartan territory, thus forcing the Duhawks to miss out on valuable points throughout the course of the game. In the pair of Duhawk wins this season they have only turned the ball over once in the two games. BEHIND ENEMY LINES … The Luther College Norse come in boasting a 4-4 record on the 2014 season. Luther was victorious in it’s first four games before dropping their last four contests. The Norse are currently 1-4 in the Iowa Conference. They will bring a triple option attack on the offensive side of the ball and run the ball the majority of the time. Luther ranks third nationally in rushing offense, averaging nearly 350 yards per game. Senior fullback Josh Vos is the Norse leading rusher, tallying 822 yards on 106 attempts, while senior quarterback JJ Sirios has rushed for 682 yards on 152 attempts. Sirios has only attempted 25 passes on the year and Luther in total has thrown the ball only 32 times. Defensively, the Norse are led by junior linebacker Aric Elton, who has totaled 74 tackles on the 2014, with 36 being solo stops, along with a pair of interceptions. Junior defensive back Gabe Saemisch is not far behind with 54 total tackles, with 40 of them being solo hits. The Luther defense has intercepted nine passes in total this season, with freshman defensive back Luke Pulliam leading the way with three. 2014 ROSTER
LORAS FOOTBALLHEAD COACH - STEVE HELMINIAKSteve Helminiak enters his 22nd year as a football coach and his first as the head football coach at Loras College.
Helminiak returned to Loras College in 2011, rejoining the Duhawk football staff as the offensive line coach. A 1991 graduate of Loras College with a degree in business management, Helminiak played four seasons as an offensive and defensive lineman for coach Bob Bierie, who is the all-time wins leader at Loras College.
After his playing career as a Duhawk, Helminiak joined Bierie’s staff as a student-assistant, working his way up to become the offensive line coach and eventually the offensive coordinator at the conclusion of his first go-round with the Duhawks.
Helminiak spent 11 seasons (1990-2000) on Bierie’s staff and was his longest tenured assistant. During those 11 seasons, the Duhawk football program went 64-45-1, a winning percentage of 59 percent.
Prior to Helminiak’s return to Loras, he was the head football coach at Southern Oregon University (2006-2010), a NAIA program. During his time at Southern Oregon, Helminiak steered the program through turbulent times. With no conference and only three NAIA programs on the west coast at the time, SOU played more NCAA Division II and NCAA FBS I teams than NAIA opponents. Helminiak compiled an 11-6 record versus NAIA opponents, including a 4-1 record against perennial NAIA power Azusa Pacific University. Throughout his time at SOU, he coached one AFCA All-American, five VSN All-Americans, the 2009 NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Year and 31 NAIA All-Independent selections. Helminiak was also instrumental in starting the Raider Red Zone – the Football Alumni Club of Southern Oregon University. In the 2004 and 2005 seasons, Helminiak served as the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Rockford College. In those two seasons, Rockford posted back-to-back 7-win seasons, compiling a 14-6 overall record. In just two seasons, his offenses produced one Nationally Ranked Quarterback – Passing Efficiency – 12th NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rusher – 21st NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rushing Offensive – 15th NCAA Division III, one All-Conference Most Valuable Lineman, 22 All-Conference Selections, and one Academic All-Conference selection. On December 3, 2013, Helminiak was named the 27th head coach in Loras College football history. In all, during Helminiak’s two stretches at Loras, he has coached two All-American selections, one GTE Academic All-District selection, three NCAA III All-West Region selections, 17 All-Conference Selections (OL/TE’s only), and numerous Honorable Mention All-Conference selections. His offensive line units paved the way for ten 1,000-yard rushers, and the top two rushers in Loras College history, both of whom rank among the all-time leading rushers in Division III. Helminiak is also responsible for recruiting 14 All-Conference selections. Helminiak and his wife, Kelli (Forde) (’98), live in Dubuque with their five children: Elizabeth, Emily, Kathryn, Joseph and Lauren.
