Senior quarterback Dylan Jones and senior wide receiver Nate Even etched their named into the Loras College football record books this past weekend. Jones stands alone as the Duhawk single game passing leader, as he threw for 381 yards against Wisconsin-Stout. The record was previously set by Jason Koeppel in 1992 with 348 yards. Jones also tied Vaughn Gesing’s 2009 record for passing attempts in a game with 49. Even broke the 30 year old record for reception yards in a game with 238. The record was previously set by Duhawk great Jim Glunz in 1984 with 237 yards. AMONG THE BEST IN THE NATION ... Two weeks into the 2014 season, the Duhawks are showing that they are among the best in the NCAA Division III in several statistical categories. On the offensive side of the ball the Duhawks are led by senior quarterback Dylan Jones, who currently ranks 15th in the nation in passing yards per game with 324, and senior wide receiver Nate Even ranks eighth in total receiving yards with 289. On defense, the Duhawks own freshman cornerback Maurice Young leads the nation with four interceptions, sophomore Austin Epple is tied for third in the nation with two forced fumbles, and sophomore Damon Davies sits at fourth in the country with 2.5 sacks per game. Augustana is led by junior quarterback Sam Frasco, who leads the team in both passing and rushing. Junior wide receiver Sean Fitzgerald also helps pace the Viking offense with 102 receiving yards, and 116 rushing yards in the first two games. On the defensive side of the ball, Augustana is led by senior defensive back Tim Maroder with 17 tackles, and junior defensive back Frank Kalble with five sacks and 13 total tackles. 2014 ROSTER
LORAS FOOTBALLHEAD COACH - STEVE HELMINIAKSteve Helminiak enters his 22nd year as a football coach and his first as the Head Football Coach at Loras College.
Helminiak returned to Loras College in 2011, rejoining the Duhawk Football Staff as the Offensive Line Coach. A 1991 graduate from Loras College with a degree in business management, Helminiak played four seasons as an offensive and defensive lineman for Coach Bob Bierie, who is the all-time wins leader at Loras College. During those 11 seasons the Duhawk Football program went 64-45-1, a winning percentage of 59 percent.
After his playing career as a Duhawk, Helminiak joined Bierie’s staff as a student-assistant, working his way up to become the Offensive Line Coach and eventually the Offensive Coordinator at the conclusion of his first go-round with the Duhawks.
Helminiak spent 11 seasons (1990-2000) on Bierie’s staff and was his longest tenured assistant.
Prior to Helminiak’s return to Loras, he was the Head Football Coach at Southern Oregon University (2006-2010), a NAIA program. During his time at Southern Oregon, Helminiak steered the program through turbulent times. With no conference and only three NAIA programs on the west coast at the time, SOU played more NCAA Division II and NCAA FBS I teams than NAIA opponents. Helminiak compiled an 11-6 record versus NAIA opponents, including a 4-1 record against perennial NAIA power Azusa Pacific University, who is now a member of the NCAA Division II. Throughout his time at SOU, he coached one AFCA All-American, five VSN All-Americans, the 2009 NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Year and 31 NAIA All-Independent Selections. Helminiak was also instrumental in starting the Raider Red Zone – the Football Alumni Club of Southern Oregon University. In the 2004 and 2005 seasons Helminiak served as the Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach at Rockford College. In those two seasons, Rockford posted back-to-back 7 win seasons, compiling a 14-6 overall record. In just two seasons, his offenses produced, one Nationally Ranked Quarterback – Passing Efficiency – 12th NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rusher – 21st NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rushing Offensive – 15th NCAA Division III, one All-Conference Most Valuable Lineman, 22 All-Conference Selections, and one Academic All-Conference Selection. On December 3, 2013, Helminiak was named the 27th Head Coach in Loras College History. In all, during Helminiak’s two stretches at Loras, he has coached two All-America Selections, one GTE Academic All-District Selection, three NCAA III All-West Region Selections, 17 All-Conference Selections (OL/TE’s only), and numerous Honorable Mention All-Conference selections. His Offensive Line units paved the way for 10 1,000 yard rushers, and the top two rushers in Loras College History, both of whom rank among the all-time leading rushers in Division III. Helminiak is also responsible for recruiting 14 All-Conference selections. Helminiak and his wife Kelli (Forde) (’98) live in Dubuque with their 5 children, Elizabeth, Emily, Kathryn, Joseph and Lauren.
