El primer semestre de 2009ya pertenece al pasado. Esto

nos permite sacar algunas con-clusiones sobre el transcurso delos negocios durante este pri-mer semestre. Hasta ahora noestaba claro en qué medida lacrisis económica global influi-ría en las actividades de las fe-deraciones y asociaciones na-cionales. Por lo que parece, haydiferencias a este respecto: Enmuchos lugares las cifras departicipación en exposiciones ypruebas de rendimiento se hanmantenido igual o incluso hanaumentado. En otros lugares,sin embargo, se quejan de pér-didas, algunas poco significa-tivas y otras, empero, cierta-mente importantes. Cabe espe-rar, especialmente porque lasexposiciones están sujetas aunos costes fijos relativamentealtos, que en el futuro se produ-cirán aún más pérdidas en másde un lugar. Después de trans-curridos los primeros seis me-ses del año 2009, ésta es unarealidad que debemos recono-cer como hecho. Muchas de lasesperanzas y expectativas sonahora para con la ExposiciónMundial 2009, cuyas cifras departicipación podrían ofrecervalor informativo. Lo mismovale para las grandes exposi-ciones de los "Winner" (gana-dores) en las distintas federa-ciones nacionales, que mayori-tariamente se realizan en elcuarto trimestre del año.

uns, einige Schlüsse über denGeschäftsverlauf im ersten Se-mester zu ziehen. Unklar warbislang, welchen Einfluss dieglobale Wirtschaftskrise auf dieAktivitäten in den Landesver-bänden haben würde. Diesscheint unterschiedlich zu sein:Vielerorts verhielten sich dieBeteiligungszahlen an Ausstel-lungen und Leistungsprüfungenresistent oder sie nahmen sogarzu. Andere wiederum beklagensich über kleinere oder bereitsgrößere Einbußen. Weil vor al-lem die Ausstellungen von rela-tiv hohen Fixkosten belastetsind, ist zu befürchten, dass eswohl mancherorts zu Verlustenkommen wird. Dies ist eineErkenntnis, die wir nach Ablaufder ersten sechs Monate desJahres 2009 als Faktum zurKenntnis nehmen müssen. Vie-le Erwartungen richten sich nunauf die Weltausstellung 2009,deren Beteiligungszahlen einenaussagefähigen Wert liefernkönnten. Gleiches gilt für diegroßen "Winner"-Ausstellun-gen in verschiedenen nationa-len Verbänden, die mehrheit-lich im vierten Quartal des Jah-res zur Durchführung gelan-gen.

Die Zusammenarbeit zwischender FCI und dem englischenKennel Club basierte bisher aufeinem Vertrag aus dem Jahre1935. Sachantque les expositions sont syno-nymes de frais fixes relative-ment élevés, des pertes sont àcraindre dans de nombreux cas.Il s'agit d'une conclusion réa-liste en cette fin de premier se-mestre de l'année 2009. L'ex-position mondiale de 2009,dont le taux de participationdevrait nous fournir une valeurde référence, suscite de nom-breuses attentes. Il en est demême des grandes « exposi-tions à titres » des différentesfédérations nationales qui sontorganisées pour la plupartdurant le quatrième trimestre del'année.

gives us an opportunity to takestock of the commercial for-tunes during the first term. Itwasn't quite clear which effectsthe global economic crisiswould have on the activities inthe national associations. Theeffects appear to be multifar-ious in nature: in many places,the number of participants inshows and performance trialsstayed the same or even in-creased. Others, on the otherhand, are bemoaning losses to agreater or lesser degree. Sincethe shows in particular are sub-ject to relatively high fixedcosts, it is feared that losseswill occur in many places. Thisis a realisation which we havehad to acknowledge as a factsix months into 2009. Manyhopes are now being placed onthe 2009 World Show, whosenumbers could supply soundvalues. The same applies to themajor "winner" shows in var-ious national associations, themajority of which are held inthe year's fourth quarter.

The cooperation between theFCI and the English KennelClub has always been based onan agreement dating back to1935. It goes without sayingthat these agreements madeover 70 years ago are no longerup-to-date in all aspects. A"Letter of Understanding"(LOU) signed in Dublin on 30May 2009 by both parties isnow taking the current situationinto account, and should beable to regulate the future co-operation in a more contempo-rary manner. In order to provide the variousherding dog breeds with a

sporting field of activity or todemonstrate the occupation ofshepherd, an FCI commissionwas founded some years agowhose task it was to deal withsheep tending and herding. Inessence, this was initiated bythe FCI board member Uwe Fi-scher who was responsible forthe working dog disciplines. Asa result of his efforts, it hasnow been possible to get athree-level set of rules (herdingregulations) passed which hasbeen in force since the begin-ning of June 2008. These herd-ing regulations are preceded bya "herding working test". Afterpassing this "herding workingtest" it is possible to take parteither in the International DogShow (working dog class) or in

the herding competitions. Up tonow, herding competitionshave been held in the FCImember countries. The com-mission focuses on not verywidely spread and very old na-tional breeds of dog, to givethem the chance of appearing incompetitions as herding dogs. The roots of herding competi-tions in continental Europe liein the "Auvergne", a region ofFrance largely shaped by volca-nism. Many flocks of sheep arekept there to make use of theinaccessible meadows. Theflocks have to be watched and"herded". The most widelyspread form of animal husband-ry there is the classic free-rangesystem where the shepherdshave to cover wide expanses ofcountryside with their flocks inorder to find grazing for theiranimals (sheep). Only healthy,well-disposed herding dogswhich are happy to work wereor are able to assist the shep-herd to a sufficient extent.

In October last year the firstEuropean Championship in"traditional style" took place inthe "Auvergne". The competi-tion was held in accordancewith the "FCI International Ru-les for Herding Trials", level 3.This includes penning and re-moving, driving the flock,

On y trouveune multitude de moutons, cequi permet notamment d'exploi-ter des pâturages difficiles d'ac-cès. Les troupeaux doivent êtresurveillés et "conduits". Laforme de travail la plus mar-quante est la conduite itinérantedes troupeaux lors de laquelleles bergers doivent parcourir degrandes distances avec leurstroupeaux afin de trouver de lanourriture pour leurs moutons.Seuls des chiens de berger ar-dents au travail, sains et douésétaient et sont en mesure d'ap-porter l'aide nécessaire aux ber-gers.

Le premier championnat d'Eu-rope de " style traditionnel " aeu lieu l'an denier, en octobre,

Im Oktober letzten Jahres fanddie erste Europameisterschaftim "Traditional-Style" in der"Auvergne" statt. Der Bewerberfolgte nach den "FCI Interna-tional Rules for Herding-Trials"Stufe 3. Dies beinhaltet dasEin- und Auspferchen, Führender Herde, Gehüt, Verkehrsprü-fung, Stoppen der Herde unddiverse Hindernisse. Der Par-cours war innerhalb 35 Minu-ten mit 30 Schafen zu bewälti-gen. Rassen wie der Beauceron,Pyrenäen-Schäferhund, Deut-scher Schäferhund, Malinois,Katalanischer Schäferhund undMudi waren vertreten.

Il s'est dérouléd'après le "règlement de la FCIpour épreuves internationalesde chiens de troupeaux, niveau3" qui comprend la sortie deparc, la conduite du troupeaux,le pâturage, le croisement etdépassement de véhicule, l'im-mobilisation et divers obstacles.Le parcours devait être réaliséen 35 minutes avec 30 trou-peaux. Des races telles que leBeauceron, le berger des Py-rénées, le berger allemand, leberger malinois, le berger ca-talan et le mudi étaient présen-tes. Les moutons de la région sesont montrés disciplinés, robu-stes et très bien soignés. Leconcours comptait 11 chiens et10 conducteurs de 5 pays dif-férents.

Les étapes "Pâturage dans lecarré" et "croisement et dépas-sement de véhicule" ont été devéritables épreuves. Les perfor-mances ont été bonnes de façongénérale et les différentes racesont maîtrisé, de façon tout à faitintéressante, les tâches qui leuront été demandées. C'est ainsique les races de chiens de ber-ger ont réalisé une défense pas-sive qui consistait à encadrerlatéralement les troupeaux, tan-dis que les races de chiens con-ducteurs de troupeaux ont es-sentiellement exercé une pres-sion sur l'arrière du troupeau,modifiant constamment leurposition afin de maintenir cettepression. Le comportement deschiens envers les moutons, leursociabilité et leur condition,ainsi que leur conformité auxstandards de races se sont révé-lés très positifs. Aucun morsureet aucun trouble externe causéspar les chiens n'a été constatédurant le concours.

Die Schafe aus der Region er-wiesen sich als diszipliniert, ro-bust und waren in sehr gutemPflegezustand. Im Hütewettbe-werb selber standen sich 11Hunde gegenüber die von 10Hundeführern aus 5 Nationenvorgestellt wurden

Als echter Prüfstein erwiesensich die Parcours-Teile "Gra-zing to the square" und "Traf-fic". Insgesamt wurden sehr gu-te Leistungen erbracht und eswar spannend wie die verschie-denen Hunderassen mit den ge-stellten Aufgaben fertig wur-den. So zeigten die Schäfer-hundrassen passives Wehrendurch seitliches Pendeln an derHerde, während die Treibhund-rassen im wesentlichen hinterder Herde Druck machten unddabei auch ständig die Positionveränderten um den Druck auf-recht zu erhalten. Sehr positivzu sehen war das Verhalten derHunde gegenüber den Schafen,deren Sozialverhalten und derPflegezustand sowie das ana-tomische Niveau der einzelnenRassen. Es gab keine Schädenam Schlachtkörper durch Biss-verletzungen oder extreme Stö-rungen durch die Hunde imWettbewerb.

Las ovejas de la región se mos-traron disciplinadas y resisten-tes y estaban muy bien cuida-das. En el concurso de pastoreoen sí compitieron 11 perros ba-jo las órdenes de 10 guías omanejadores de 5 naciones.

El criterio más difícil pro-bablemente lo formaron las par-tes del recorrido denominadas"Grazing to the square" (áreade pastaje cerrada) y "Traffic"(carretera). En total, los rendi-mientos fueron muy buenos, yfue muy interesante observarcómo las diferentes razas deperros conseguían realizar losejercicios propuestos. Así, lasrazas de perros de pastor mos-traron un trabajo de conducciónpasiva corriendo arriba y abajopor el costado del rebaño,mientras que las razas de boy-

Altogether the perfor-mance level was very high andit was exciting to see how thevarious breeds managed tocomplete the various tasks theywere set. The sheepdog breedsdemonstrated passive resistingby swinging from one side ofthe flock to the other, whereasthe cattle dogs essentiallypressed the flock from the rearand consequently had to adjusttheir positions constantly tokeep the pressure on in the rightway. It was very positive to seethe behaviour of the dogs to-wards the sheep, their social be-haviour and condition alongwith the anatomical level of theindividual breeds. There was nodamage to the herded animalsas a result of bites or any ex-treme disturbances caused bythe dogs during the competi-tion.

Ultimately, D. Babillot with hisBeauceron "Tchad Du ChantDes Bergers" managed to be-come the winner on the day andsecure the 1st European Sheep-herding Championship 2008.

The dog stood out by virtue ofits calm and safe work and ex-cellent obedience.

In second place was the Pyre-nean Sheepdog "Reve DesTranshumants" with Mme. Far-noux.

Third place went to ManfredVoigt from Germany (Würt-temberg) with his GermanShepherd "Imax vom Dolder-brunnen".

The holding of this first Inter-national Herding Competitionvalidated the aims of the FCICommission for Herding Dogs.Events of this kind are a plat-form for presenting the nationalbreeds of dog and for demon-strating in public their high-le-vel suitability for work as her-ding dogs. This honours andpromotes them as national cul-tural assets. It will remain atask for the FCI commission tocontinue to organise such her-ding dog competitions in thisscope.

Mit diesem erstmals durchge-führten Internationalen Hüte-wettbewerb wird also die Ziel-setzung der FCI-Kommissionfür Hütehunde bestätigt. SolcheVeranstaltungen sind eine Platt-form, die Nationalen Hunderas-sen zu präsentieren und derenhochgradige Eignung als Hüte-hunde in der Öffentlichkeitdarzustellen. Y el tercer puesto fue paraManfred Voigt, de Alemania,con su Perro de Pastor Alemán"Imax vom Dolderbrunnen".Así pues, con esta prueba inter-nacional de pastoreo, que se hacelebrado por vez primera, seconfirma el objetivo de la Co-misión para Perros de Pastoreode la FCI. Este tipo de eventosson plataformas ideales parapresentar en público las razasde perros nacionales así comosus respectivas aptitudes e ido-neidades como perros de pasto-reo. De esta manera se los hon-ra y promociona como lo queson: Patrimonio Cultural Na-cional. DOG HANDLERS ON THE LEASH

The state government ofSwitzerland enacted a federaldog law in April 2009. According to this law, doghandlers are to be held moreaccountable. The bill is basedstrongly on the country's ani-mal protection law: there isnow a new notification re-quirement for biting inci-dents. Dog handlers are alsoobliged to undergo regularfurther training. In addition,it will now be compulsory tohave a liability insurance forthe animal. However, therewill not be a list of danger-ous breeds of dog whichhave to be banned or treatedspecially.

Dazu kommt eineobligatorische Haftpflicht-versicherung für das Tier. Eswird aber keine Liste gefähr-licher Hunderassen geben,die verboten oder besondersbehandelt werden müssen.

Setter, Rottweiler, Standardpoodle, Weimaraner, AmericanAkita, Bloodhound, RoughCollie, Irish Wolfhound, New-foundland, Saint Bernard - theyare all dog breeds that have agenetic predisposition forGDV. The mortality is esti-mated at an average 30% indogs. The recurrence rate fordogs with this problem is onaverage 11% over a period of 3years.

Up to now two risk factors havebeen found that are linked tofeeding: giving one meal a dayand eating too fast. However,apparently the nature of thefood is not a real factor. Feed-ing one single type of food in-creases the chances of GDV.

A l'heure actuelle, on a décou-vert les facteurs à risque sui-vants, liés à l'alimentation : unseul repas par jour et une ab-sorption trop rapide des ali-ments. La nature de l'alimenta-tion n'est toutefois manifeste-ment pas un facteur tangible.Une alimentation peu variée(une seule sorte d'aliments)augmente le risque d'occlusionintestinale. La découverte selonlaquelle, lors d'ingestion d'ali-ments secs, la taille des mor-ceaux joue un rôle (sachant queles morceaux de moins de 30mm présentent un risque accru)est nouvelle. Les aliments secssont-ils par conséquent effec-tivement plus dangereux ? Pasvraiment. La dilatation de l'e-stomac n'est pas causée par lesaliments secs qui fermententdans l'estomac mais par l'ab-

Ist also die Gabe vonTrockenfutter tatsächlich ge-fährlicher? Nicht wirklich. Ma-gendilatation wird nicht durchTrockenfutterstücke verursacht,die im Magen gären, sondern

New findings show that whenfeeding dry food, the size of thekibble plays a role, with a high-er risk with kibbles smallerthan 30 mm. So, is feeding withkibbles actually more danger-ous? Not really. Gastric dila-ta-tion is not caused by the kibblesfermenting in the stomach butby swallowing large amountsof air (aerophagia).

What is the advice for dogowners? - Give smaller portions andfeed 3 to 4 meals a day- Decrease the water intake: nowater until 1 hour after eating- No movement or exercise un-til 1 hour after eating (this isthe major cause of GDV)- Feed more energy-rich food - Never use lifted feeding ordrinking bowls- Regularly clean the eating anddrinking bowls

An often-performed operation,gastropexy, is a useful measureto prevent GCV. It can extendthe recurrence period to 547days (compared to 188 dayswithout operation). Obedience is a type of sport fordogs in which the harmonious,quick and exact performance ofthe exercises is the main point.Obedience is described as the"high school" of subordination.A basic requirement is that thehandler and the dog form agood, well-practised team.

The FCI took over the Obe-dience Trial Regulations fromSweden in 1990. Not, however,the complete trial regulationsbut only those of the highestlevel, the Elite Class. In mostcountries this class is alsoknown as Obedience Class 3.Many member countries sud-denly found themselves in acompletely new situation, withmany changes being made fromone day to the next. Exerciseslike calling in with little stops,fetching left and right, distantcontrol and even the exercise"forwards" were suddenlybeing performed quite differ-ently.The trainers and the new per-formance judges were facedwith the greatest problem. Forthe one it meant a completelynew method, and for the othermuch more exact judging.Little bits of assistance weresuddenly not only being penal-ised: no, the performance judg-es had to train themselves tonotice them in the first place. Übungen, wie Hereinru-fen mit Zwischenstopps, links -rechts Bringen, Kontrolle aufDistanz, ja selbst die Übung"Voran" wurden plötzlich ganzanders durchgeführt.Das größte Problem hatten dieAusbildner und die neuen Lei-stungsrichter. Für die einen wares eine komplett neue Methode,für die anderen ein viel exakte-res Beurteilen. Kleine Hilfenwurden auf einmal nicht nurgeahndet, nein, die Leistungs-richter mussten sich erst trainie-ren, diese auch zu bemerken.

En el año 1990, la FCI asumióy adoptó el reglamento de prue-bas para obediencia de Suecia.Aunque no asumió el regla-mento completo, sino solamen-te el nivel más alto, la clase Eli-te. En la mayoría de los países,esta clase se conoce tambiéncomo clase 3, o clase OCI, deobediencia. Y de golpe se pro-dujo una situación completa-mente nueva para muchos paí-ses miembros. Muchas cosascambiaron de un día para elotro. Una serie de ejercicios,como la llamada con órdenesde quieto entremedio, cobrar aizquierda y derecha, control adistancia, incluso el ejercicio de"Voran", de pronto, se debíarealizar de otra manera comple-tamente distinta.El problema mayor fue para loseducadores y adiestradores ca-ninos y para los nuevos juecesde trabajo. Obedience is brain-jogging fordog and handler. An uninter-esting, soul-destroying walking"to heel" is absolutely frownedupon here. In mostcases this is a lack of the wil-lingness to learn and the fear ofchanging over from the old sys-tems and training methods.However, an increasing numberof countries have alreadychanged their opinions andeven Japan has now begun withthe FCI Obedience.

Obedience consists of ten exer-cises: sitting in the group, lyingin the group - both exercisesperformed with the handler outof view, off-the-lead heelingwith a lot of turns, stand - sit -down from moving as one exer-cise, calling in with stay anddown, forwards with stay at acone and either left or right in a3x3 metre square 23 metresaway, fetching left, right, fetch-ing a metal dumbbell over anobstacle (at shoulder height tothe dog), identifying the han-dler's scent from 6 wooden ob-jects along with distant controlincluding six changes of posi-tion at a distance of 15 metres.

In den folgenden Berichtenwerden wir die einzelnenÜbungen nicht nur in Ausfüh-rung und Beurteilung beschrei-ben, sondern speziell auch dieAusbildungsmethoden..

Bei Obedience wollen wir ei-nen Hund sehen, der arbeitenwill und nicht muss, aber trotz-dem alle Anordnungen befolgt.Das Reglement ist auch auf derHomepage der FCI in Englisch,Französisch und Spanisch ab-rufbar (Deutsch wird nochkommen), wobei im Zweifels-fall Englisch (das Original) her-angenommen wird.

Die nächste Weltmeisterschaftfindet im Rahmen der Welthun-deausstellung in Bratislava(Slovakei) von 8. - 11. Oktober2009 statt.

Pericles gave a small"Meliteo" dog as a present tohis wife Aspasia, which wassupposed to be the loveliest dogin Athens and took part in dogcompetitions. Xanthippe's (So-crates' wife) love for her dog isproven by the fact that sheburied it by the seaside. Aesopvery often referred to dogs inhis fables. Noteworthy is themonument the Corinthiansdedicated to the 49 dogs be-longing to the city guard, whichhad saved the city from suddenattack, and the celebration heldfor the 50th dog, which hadsurvived the battle.

Aristotle made reference toseven different dog breeds. The"Epirotiko" (large, strong shep-herd), the "Dog of Lakonia"(guard), "Molossos" (hunter),the "Dog of Cyreneia", "ofEgypt", "of India", and lastly,the "Meliteos" (small, delicatedog).

In the 3rd century BC, Alex-ander the Great used Molossosdogs in order to spread panicamong the enemy, and hisfavourite Molossos, "Pericles",died in battle during the con-quest of India.

Written sources also mentionthe dynamic and strong dogs ofEpirus, which descend from theprovince of Molossia, and arethus called Molossos, a namewhich is used even today incynological terminology.

Nous retrouvons de multiplesreprésentations de chiens surles poteries et les sculptures ; leplus connu étant le chien enmarbre exposé au musée del'Acropolis.

HISTORY OFTHE KENNEL CLUB GREECE

The first club for the regis-tration of pure-bred dogs wasfounded in Greece in the mid1950s. However, its activitiesdecreased over the years, so in1984 the "Kennel Club ofGreece" was founded as a non-profit society, which became anFCI associated member in 1989and was nominated to full-member status in 1999.

ACTIVITIES

The KCG is headed by a boardconsisting of seven members.The office, located in a suburbof Athens called Aghios Ste-fanos, is run by five full-timeand three part-time employees,and is open Monday to Fridayfrom 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The KCG has 950 members.Several commissions are run ona voluntary basis by electedmembers.

The KCG records the pure-breddogs in Greece and issuespedigrees for native dogs.77,000 dogs from 130 differentbreeds are registered in the studbook. There are two types of ped-igrees according to the testedparents' suitability for breeding.Among other things, the KCGcarries out compulsory screen-ing for hip dysplasia, and willsoon be introducing compulso-ry screening for elbow dyspla-sia & DNA. Le KCG est dirigé par un comi-té composé de sept membres.Les bureaux, situés dans la ban-lieue d'Athènes (AghiosStefanos), comptent cinq em-ployés à temps plein et troisemployés à temps partiel. Der erste Club zur Regis-trierung reinrassiger Hundewurde in Griechenland Mitteder 1950er Jahre gegründet.Seine Aktivitäten nahmenallerdings mit den Jahren ab,und so wurde 1984 der "Grie-chische Kennel Club" (KennelClub of Greece) als Non-Profit-Organisation gegründet. Erwurde 1989 assoziiertes Mit-glied und 1999 Vollmitgliedder FCI.

AKTIVITÄTEN

Der KCG wird von einem Aus-schuss geleitet, der aus siebenMitgliedern besteht. Im Büro,das sich in einem Vorort vonAthen befindet (Aghios Ste-fanos), arbeiten fünf Vollzeit-und drei Teilzeitangestellte. Esist Montag bis Freitag von 8 bis16 Uhr geöffnet.
