Welcome to 2013 on the Far South Coast; the beginning of another year - I hope it's a good one for you and your family.

From Eden to Batemans Bay there are tons of activities, exhibitions, markets and live music happening, so make the most of it all and have fun! Don't forget to set aside a little bit of time for relaxing though, otherwise you'll need a holiday to recover from your holiday.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service run a fantastic program over January in several National Parks. You can try everything from rainforest walks, canoeing, tours of Davidson Whaling Station and snorkelling. Details of the Parks' Discovery Program is on page 15.

Anyone who loves agricultural shows but not the massive crowds that are often found in capital cities should visit the 104th Annual Pambula Show. It has woodchopping, a dog high

jump, horse events, flowers, fruit and veggies in the Pavilion and a sideshow alley, but without all the stress or huge expense. More info on page 9.

Almost as good as going to the drive-in is Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club's Outdoor Movie Nights. Bring your own chair and enjoy a movie under the stars. Go to page 19 for details.

Also at Tathra is the famous Wharf to Waves Weekend, with a fun run, 30km bike ride and of course the Wharf to Waves Ocean Swims. All the information you need is on page 19.

There are lots of art exhibitions on at the many galleries on the coast too - make sure you visit to enjoy works by our talented local artists.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.

For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.

Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

Cuddly Koalas at Potoroo PalaceSapphire the koala has this thing. After the visitor train goes past, she waits expectantly in her tree, hanging out slightly, waiting for people to arrive. She loves meeting them. She loves cuddles just as much, too, and one of her keepers will often have to spend a bit of time with her, after the talks are over, trying to coax her back onto her tree. “Mmm, yummy leaves,” rarely works, but (you know) they have to try. Sometimes she can be tricked onto a branch if the keeper can turn quickly enough. Failing all that, there’s always the radio call for ‘cuddle backup’ – another keeper comes and takes over cuddle duties and, after a while, tries the same routine.Sapphire, of course, knows exactly what she’s doing. Tips for when you’re visiting Potoroo: * The kangaroos love scratches on the chest, just below the neck*When patting an echidna, there’s one direction that works best! *Listen to what the cockatoos are saying - it’s often not a random comment*When meeting a python, introduce yourself at python speed.Howl with dingoes.Potoroo Palace is an amazing and loved animal sanctuary, just 9kms north of Merimbula on the Princes Highway. With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf,

classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other

walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants.

On the 21st and 22nd January, Tathra is becomes the base for the Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. Running since 2002, this event now encompasses a fun run, 40km bike ride and ocean swims from the Wharf to the Surf Lifesaving Club.

Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend has fun for the whole familyEach year over 400 people jump into the crystal blue water of Tathra from the historic Tathra Wharf and swim to the beach in the Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. Why not join them and experience the thrill of being part of one of the Far South Coast’s premier events. The swim claims centre stage of a weekend of fun and fitness in Tathra, which includes a 2km Beach Fun Run and a Bega to the Beach 30km Mountain Bike Ride.We welcome all visitors to our area to come and join in the fun over this long weekend in January.Saturday 26 January will kick off with the Coastlife Tathra Beach 2km Fun Run at 12.30pm. All members of the family can enter this run, which starts on the beach just north of the Tathra Beach Country Club and finishes in front of the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. Age categories from infants’ school-aged children to over 40s! For bike enthusiasts we have a 30km Bike Bash leaving Bega at 5pm and

riding over Dr George Mountain to Tathra through some of the most breathtaking bushland scenery the Sapphire Coast has to offer. The event finishes at the Tathra Surf Club with major random draw prizes to be won and refreshments. The main event is held on Sunday 27 January from 7.00am. The Tathra Wharf to Waves Ocean events encompass a number of ocean swims: the 1200m Michael Marshman Architect’s ‘Splash for Cash’ open race (12+ yrs) and a series of 600m age races from the Historic Tathra Wharf. Competitors swim around a course and finish on the beach in front of the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club. The first male and female in the 1200m ‘Splash

for Cash’ will receive $500 cash and a unique medallion made by local goldsmiths Martin and Dorte Planert and Goscia Jackson, a local artist, will present each with an original trophy. A new event on the weekend calendar is the ‘FLIPPER THRASH’ beach swim – so there really is something for everyone.There will be prizes for winners and major random draw prizes over the weekend, but you have to be in it to win it! Spectators are most welcome and there will be lots of food and refreshments available.The finale to the weekend will be an evening of fun and dancing at the Surf Club on Sunday night where the talented Truck Brothers will be performing. So come along for what will once again be a weekend of activity and fun for the whole family. Lifesaving Club, and what a spectacle it is.This year the Tathra Moonlight Cinema nights will be held at sunset on Friday 4th January and again on Friday 11th. Movies are projected on to a giant inflatable screen. All you need to do is BYO chair, pillow and a blanket and sit back and enjoy the big screen under the stars. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.

Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region.

Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle.

Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

The new Sapphire Marketplace complex has opened after a 15 month construction phase, bringing nationally

recognised retail outlets to Bega.

Housing the largest Big W outside of Sydney, the complex represents a huge change to Bega's retail landscape.

The picturesque historic village of Cobargo is far more than a working village. It is a creative, vibrant place reflecting the diversity and talents of those who live and work in the district.

Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go.

Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkelling, boating and canoeing. Book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats or throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River.

Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue Pool, set on the edge of the ocean at the base of the cliffs off Scenic Drive.

Try out the 18 hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls at the Bermagui Country Club. The Terrace Cafe at the Club is open every day for lunch and dinner; you can pore over the menu online so you can order as soon as you arrive.

Test your riding skills at the Bermagui Mountain Bike Park. Go bush walking, take a guided walk or bird watch in the surrounding National Parks and State Forests.

Take a guided tour of the Montreal Goldfield and learn about the discovery of gold in the 1880s. The Goldfield is a virtually intact remnant of the gold rush days, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea.

Visit the new Fishermen's Co-op complex with restaurants, a wine bar and gift shops to wander through, or sit and watch the boats unloading their daily catch of fresh fish.

There are several artists studios in and around Bermagui, including Bermagui Mudworks just south of town where you can enjoy a coffee and browse through the extensive range of individually crafted pottery.

The Bermagui Seaside Fair, a fantastic community event that celebrates life in Bermagui, is held in March each year.

Another great cultural event is the biennial Four Winds Festival, held next over the Easter weekend in 2014.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometers south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop.

The ABC Cheese Factory is located in the heart of historical Central Tilba and is the home of the famous Tilba Club Cheese. The ABC Cheese factory was established in 1891 and was the first Cheese Co-op in NSW.Today Tilba Club Cheese is still waxed by hand and is sold exclusively through the shop in 250 and 500 gram portions. Well, now that Christmas is over, the visitors have gone home and all the entertaining is finished, more time can be spent in the garden, where there are a number of jobs that can be done to get the garden through the latter part of Summer and into Autumn.Summer brings with it the hot drying winds that can cause damage to supple new growth that has grown on plants over the spring/summer period. Some of this growth can become a bit tatty so a light prune will tidy them up and encourage new growth for Autumn. Don't cut plants back too hard as understorey-shaded foliage could burn if exposed too quickly to the sun.As mentioned in a previous issue, mulching is of the highest importance. Plants that are well mulched will continue growing well through the warmer months and the requirement for excessive watering will be eased. Using a soft mulch like sugar cane or lucerne will also have

the added benefit of improving the structure and texture of the soil as it decomposes.The cutting back or dead heading of perennials and roses can now be done and this in turn will encourage new growth and a repeat flowering in Autumn. Keep and eye out on roses for aphids and thrips. A spray with a systemic spray will keep them under control.For those of us on the coast, the added problem of humidity brings with it fungal diseases. Use a fungicide as a preventative spray more so than using a spray when the diseases is sighted. This is usually too late and the damage has been done.Something not talked about that often are the lawns that surround our garden beds. It is important at this time of the year to raise the mowing height a couple of notches. The grass will survive a prolonged hot spell if not too short, and low-mown grasses only encourages shallow roots that

use more water. Also now that the grandkids have gone home check the lawns for Bindii. If you find them, a selective Bindii spray is recommended Additionally, along with all the good gardening practices mentioned already, we must be well aware of our general watering practices. A good deep watering of garden beds once a week will encourage deep root growth which in turn reduces the need for watering every second day or so.Then everything is a winner.Enjoy the rest of your Summer gardening.

Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.

The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a patrolled beach, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in.

Narooma is the base for charter operators offering tours to nearby Montague Island, with its spectacular lighthouse, little penguin and fur seal colonies and Aboriginal heritage.

Just up the road from Narooma is Bodalla, the village with the magnificent stone church and many other historic buildings. The village was developed by Thomas Mort in the late 1800s as a private country estate based around the dairy and cheese making industries, which still dominate Bodalla today.

All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife. Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901.

Further north, the township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore.

It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

These days however, Moruya is known

for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.

Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.

Catch a fish. Go scuba diving.

Snorkel with fur seals. Cruise the Batemans Marine Park.

Have a NPWS guided tour of Montague Island.

Visit an island lighthouse.

Or you could just book out the boat and design your

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.

After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past two hundred years.

The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.

Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of

‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations.

Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.

There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance. Head west along the Kings Highway past historic Nelligen and up Clyde Mountain to see beautiful escarpment forests in the Budawang National Park. The beautiful township of Braidwood is also worth a visit.

Follow the coastline south to explore the beautiful beaches of Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee.
