George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.
Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.
A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.
You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.
Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.
The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

In 1949, Eden’s fishing industry faced economic ruin. The two main fishing species of barracouta and salmon failed to arrive along the coast, leaving local fishermen wondering what to do next. Tuna was the answer. Thousands of tons of tuna could be found close to shore during the annual migration to spawning grounds off Tasmania. Fishermen at Bermagui claimed there were so many that they ‘could walk from their boats to the shore on the fishes’ backs’.Up until then, there was no market for Australian caught tuna either in Australia or overseas. With the reduced catch of salmon and barracouta, the fishermen turned to tuna to counter the effects of the poor season. Mostly caught by trolling up to seven lines, around 300, 000 pounds (136 kg) of tuna was caught in the first four weeks. Most of the tuna weighed around 20 pounds (just under 10 kg). The season saw 1,000 tons of southern bluefin tuna landed at port, mostly caught by fishermen using improvised equipment and learning as they went.On 24 September 1950, the American owned tuna clipper Senibua (with its own spotting aircraft) arrived in Sydney to prepare for experimental pole fishing for tuna in Australian waters. On its first cruise in October in waters near Jervis Bay, Senibua poled 6 tons of southern bluefin in 40 minutes.
‘Strike’: the art of poling tuna at Eden Killer Whale MuseumThe visit by the clipper was seen as an opportune time for Australian fishermen to learn poling methods from experienced crews, assess poling against purse seine netting, and explore the commercial viability of Australian tuna resources. Tuna poling involved the ‘chumming’ of waters, where either dead or live bait was thrown into a school of tuna to create a feeding frenzy. While tuna were feeding, fishermen stood in racks attached to the sides of the fishing vessel, and cast long lines with barbless feather lures or live bait. The fish strike the lure and once hooked, fishermen haul their long fishing poles overhead where the fish dislodge during the change in tension of the swinging action. The line and lure is then cast out again as quickly as possible to maximise the catch numbers while the feeding frenzy is at its peak. If fish proved too large for a single pole fisherman, the pole configuration changed to double and triple polers, allowing two or three men to haul in a single fish. In the early 1960s, experiments began on mechanical poling machines. While they had benefits, vessels still required crews to resolve mechanical and fish release failures and stow the catch. A dangerous occupation, fishermen have been lost when hauled overboard by large tuna and entire

crews have vanished in poor weather. This exhibition examines the evolution of methods and equipment associated with tuna pole fishing, and pays tribute to the fishermen who worked in the physically, financially and emotionally demanding industry of tuna poling.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage
of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs.
At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the
ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has with an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth. There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms.
Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters..

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.
Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.
In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.
The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.
There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.
Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.
Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.
Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.
For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.
Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

The Lakeview received its Two Schooner award after being judged on its food, service, ambience and feel-good vibe.
With fantastic views over Merimbula Lake, the Hotel is perfect for enjoying a meal with friends and family. The Lakeview's restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner, with counter meals also available in the Bar. The food is of a higher standard than your average pub meal, as reflected by its Two Schooner win.So for a meal as good as anything you'll find in Sydney or the regions, make a reservation this summer at the Lakeview. For bookings or more information, phone 02)6495 1202 or visit the website www.merimbulalakeview.com.au

Merimbula Marina – Something for EveryoneNo visit to Merimbula is complete without seeing our spectacular coastline from the ocean. Whether it's reef or game fishing, whale watching or a dolphin cruise, Merimbula Marina have a cruise to suit everyone.Merimbula Marina is a family-owned business and we work hard to ensure that your time with us is a pleasant one. If you are a keen angler then this month we have several options for you:- Book one of our Full Day Game Fishing Charters and try your luck at landing a big Marlin; - Try a Full Day Kingfishing Charter for some great sportfishing; - How about a 4 or 5 hour Reef Fishing Charters, departing early morning each day (you know the saying “the early bird catches the worm"...or in our case, the fish!) The water is warming up and so too will the fishing, with snapper, morwong and flathead on the bite. We should also start to see a few kingfish coming on this month. - Book a 5 hour Reef Fishing Charter this January and receive a FREE 2 hour Scenic Bay Dolphin Cruise!
Offer not valid for non-fishers. If you've never fished before or have younger children, then our 3 hour Family Fishing Charter is perfect for you. Our staff are available to assist you throughout the charter with tuition and demonstrations. These charters depart late morning, and all fish are cleaned and bagged ready for you to take home.Check out our daily fishing and dolphin cruise reports which are posted to our Facebook page each afternoon www.facebook.com/MerimbulamarinaIf fishing is not for you, then why not try one of our 2 hour Bay Dolphin Cruises. This scenic cruise departs twice daily and takes you past brilliant red and yellow sandstone cliffs, yellow beaches and spectacular coastline. We regularly sight Common and Bottlenosed Dolphins, Australian Fur Seals, Sea Turtles, Penguins and a wide variety of seabirds. On selected days we also have a 1 hour Merimbula Bay Sunset Cruise. This short cruise departs early evening and is a great way to relax before going out to dinner at one of Merimbula’s great
restaurants or heading back to the campsite. If you're not the ocean-going type, then hire one of our Self-Drive Hire Boats and explore the Merimbula Channel and Lake. Pack a picnic or your fishing rods and make a day of it. You don’t need a boating licence and we will provide operating instructions. Make sure you have your NSW Recreational Fishing License with you; these can be purchased online at www.licence.nsw.gov.au We have rods available for hire and bait and tackle kits for purchase. To book your charter come and see us at the end of the Public Jetty in Market Street, Merimbula, or phone (02) 6495 1686 www.merimbulamarina.com

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.
In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of
wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.
The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.
A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.
The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region.
Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

What to see..Where to go..What to do when travelling in NSW
What to See & Do Go fishing off the famous Tathra
Wharf
Enjoy the walk or bike ride from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka
Take the kids to the playground and skatebowl near the Surf Club
Launch a boat or kayak from the Mogareeka boat ramp and explore the Bega River
For ocean fishing, launch from the Kianinny boat ramp
Ride the many mountain bike tracks around Tathra
With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.
Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952.
Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November.
Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.
There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located
near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.
An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.
Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.
Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views.
On the 18th and 19th January, Tathra becomes the base for the Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. Running since 2002, this event encompasses a fun run, 30km bike ride and a series of ocean swims from the Wharf to the Surf Lifesaving Club.

Tathra Moonlight Cinema raises funds for local Club
Ocean swim fans and lovers of mountain bike tracks won’t be disappointed by visiting Tathra on the third weekend of January 2014 for the annual Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. The series of ocean swims on Sunday January 19th, is in its 13th year, and could be seen as the highlight of what promises to be an action-packed weekend on the far south coast of NSW.On Saturday, January 18th, there’s a 2km fun run on Tathra Beach from the Country Club to the Surf Club, while mountain bike enthusiasts will also be in action that day, with a 30km ‘Bega to the Beach’ ride from Bega across Dr George Mountain to the coast. Experienced triathletes and anyone who wants to give it a shot can sign up for all three activities, but traditionally, it's the swim that's the attraction, with organisers expecting well over 500 entrants this year.Sunday is the big day for all the family, with visitors and locals invited to enter one of a series of 600m swims according to their age bracket (eight classes, for age 10 and up) or the 1200m Finns Pest Control 'Splash for Cash’ open race (from age 12 and up), which offers a $500 prize
for the first male and first female onto the beach, a trophy made by a local artist, and a unique medallion made by local goldsmith jeweller, Martin Planert. A Flipper Thrash is also held after the 1200m Swim where those swimmers aged 12 and over, who haven’t competed in the other swims, can jump off the wharf with their goggles, snorkels and flippers to help them swim to the beach.Lots of prizes for places in the 600m series swims and major random draw prizes over the weekend including holiday packages in Tathra and up in the Snowy Mountains, a Raw Surfboard and a
fantastic Mountain Bike. All the swims start from the historic Tathra Wharf, a remnant of the days when steamers carried goods and passengers along the coast. In use from 1862-1952, it was restored by the National Trust and local residents. A wide range of people have taken part in the event over the last 12 years so entrants could find themselves lining up with seasoned ocean swimmers, AFL footballers and Commonwealth Games medallists, with competitors coming from around Australia on a regular basis.Safety is a priority for the organisers, and the swim course is under the watchful eye of a big team of experienced lifesavers, however the onus is on swimmers to correctly assess their fitness and capability and enter the event accordingly. To cap off the weekend, the Truck Brothers will be performing at the Tathra Surf Club on the Sunday evening from 5pm. The gig is open to the public and will be a great night of entertainment.ENTER ON-LINE NOW. Visit www.tathrawharf2waves.com.au
Tathra Moonlight Cinema is back! What could be more fun than going to the drive-in? Going to the movies at the beach, that’s what!On Friday, January 10 the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club will be holding a movie night on the sands in front of the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club, and
what a spectacle it is.This year the movie will be Identity Thief (R) starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman and will screen after sunset. The movie screens at 8.30pm.All you need to bring is a comfie chair and wear warm clothes, sit back and enjoy the movie with beautiful Tathra bay and stars as the backdrop.Drinks, icecream and popcorn will be available. Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores, and the famous Cheese Factory, all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.
Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday.
The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in.
With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are lots of places to walk around town and take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean.
Narooma has some easy cycling tracks, as well as being a great base for serious riders who are happy tackling rides 50km or longer.
Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages.
The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea.
Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia.
If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants to try, as well as shops to explore.

After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.
To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.
Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.
After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.
Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years.
The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia.
Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.
Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of
‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town.
The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations.
Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.
Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.
There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance.
Enjoy the scenery along the Kings Highway on the way to the historic town of Braidwood with its beautiful buildings and interesting shops.
The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.

The world's toughest surfboat race - the George Bass MarathonThe George Bass Marathon is held biennially at the start of January, and is the longest and toughest surfboat marathon event in the world. Started back in 1975 by Bega local newspaper editor Curly Annabel, the intention of the race was to replicate some of the journey undertaken by Surgeon Commander George Bass and 6 naval oarsman in 1797. Commander Bass and his crew rowed a longboat from Port Phillip down the NSW coast and around the southern end of Victoria, mapping the coastline as they went.Teams in the first marathon (in order of placing) were Cronulla, Bulli, Point Lonsdale, Burning Palms, Long Reef, Moruya, Seaspray, Portsea, Tathra, Maroubra & Mona Vale.Since its inception, the Marathon has grown to include as many as 38 crews in the 1990 race, with entrants coming from as far away as New Zealand. Women's crews started competing in the late 1990s, with 11 crews participating in 2012.Local club Tathra holds the unbroken record as the only surf club to have entered and completed in every George Bass Marathon since its inception in 1975, an outstanding achievement. An unofficial Club has been started for rowers who have participated in
10 George Bass Marathons, a truly amazing feat of endurance and strength over 20 years. Moruya & Tathra have both had crews contest every event since inception. Starting on 29th December in Batemans Bay, the Dial Before You Dig George Bass Surf Marathon attracts around 20 surf boats and 20 surf ski paddlers, a total of about 200 competitors from Victoria, NSW, ACT and Queensland. The event is hosted by a committee of the Far South Coast Branch of Surf Life Saving NSW.Covering 190km over seven days, competitors have been training hard for months just to finish this gruelling event. The program for the race is as follows:Day 1: Batemans Bay to Moruya; A leisurely 27km cruise for the first legDay 2: Moruya to Tuross; a sprint day of a mere 19kmDay 3: Tuross to Narooma; some 22kmDay 4: Narooma to Bermagui; 24kmDay 5: Bermagui to Tathra; the big one at 35km
Day 6: Tathra to Pambula; 27kmDay 7: Merimbula to Eden; nominally 20 km, with the finish line being Aislings Beach, Eden. For more information, visit the website: www.georgebassmarathon.com.au
