November
and
ContentsSpring is nearly done, and the whales are still on their southern migration.
In Eden, whales are still front and centre as the Eden Whale Festival, one of the premier festivals on the Far South Coast, runs from the 26th October - 3rd November. With a huge street parade, markets, music, art, fireworks, the controversial Skywhale and, of course, whale-watching, there's action a-plenty in the port of Eden. Details are on pages 6 and 7.
Spring is also celebrated at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club, with their Melbourne Cup Race Day on Tuesday 5th November. There's a great race program and of course, Fashions on the Field. You'll find more on page 11.
If you're into sailing, then make sure you get to Narooma on 1st - 3rd November for the Narooma Boats Afloat Festival, a gathering of beautiful
timber boats unlike no other. Check out all the details on page 24.
The South Coast Caravan, Camping & Holiday Expo is on in Batemans Bay from November 8th - 10th; a must for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Read more on page 31.
Also in Batemans Bay is the Seaside Carnivale, a fantastic fun family day on November 17th - see page 31 for details.
Finally, the 33rd Merimbula Classic is a celebration of surf with wave-sailing, kite surfing and stand up paddle surfing - see page 10 for more info.
Phew - there's a lot going on!
Enjoy your stay on the coast, and don't forget to watch out for the wildlife on the roads, even when you're in town.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.
Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.
A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.
You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.
Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.
The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment.

Eden's Whale Festival brings together all things whaleDon't miss the 2013 Eden Whale Festival from 26th October to the 3rd November in the historic port of Eden.If you want to get up close and personal with these magnificent animals, there is no better place than in Eden.Whales can be seen in large numbers in the town’s stunning Twofold Bay over spring, whether you are in a boat or, indeed, just from the shore ... And while they frolic, the residents are busily putting on Australia’s premier whale celebration. For one weekend each year, the rich maritime and whaling history of this
port becomes the centrepiece for a weekend that somehow seamlessly links all things whale. There’s a spectacular street parade to open the big Saturday program with a vibrant local produce and craft market selling the work of local artisans down
at Snug Cove. Educational marine displays and presentations are an important part of the festival, with National Parks once again setting up for land-based ranger-supported whale watching at Rotary Park Look-out. The fast boat will be back in Twofold Bay again taking the quick trip to Davidsons Whaling station throughout the weekend. The music will hit another high with headline act Saskwatch coming from Melbourne to put on an afternoon show with special guests Tjupurra and his famous Didgeribone lending a hand. The festival will officially close when the fireworks light up the sky in the evening. And of course don't miss the controversial 34 metre long floating Skywhale as is floats high above Eden’s Snug Cove. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region
during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of
businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.

Ever wanted to see the gentle giants of the sea up close? Today could be your lucky day; whales are at peak numbers on the NSW coastline as they continue their Southern migration to feast on krill in the cooler Antarctic waters. Head to our south coast waters to catch the whales frolicking. With their powerful bodies surging through the great blue depths, tail-slapping as they
go, these whales sure know how to put on a show. Whale watching season in NSW is from 1 June to 30 November each year, so now’s the time to migrate to a coastal national park to see these amazing animals on their own migration. There are great vantage points and whale watching ‘hot spots’ where you can observe the migrating whales in many south coast National Parks.Wild About Whales is the best way for you to get involved in their journey. Visit the website at www.wildaboutwhales.com.au and find a top whale-watching hotspot in a NSW national park, then tell us all about your other coastal adventures on our Facebook page. As well as whale watching, there are plenty of other activities to experience in our coastal national parks, from bushwalking and photography, to Discovery tours and spotting a wealth of other marine and land based wildlife.Help us track the whales’ progress and tweet your sightings to @wildaboutwhales with the hashtag #whaleon, or use our mobile app and see where they are on the sightings map. So what are you waiting for? Plan your coastal adventure for this whale watching season now at www.wildaboutwhales.com.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.
The dairy industry has always played
a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products.
A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.
The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region.
Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples, with beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by.
Tathra’s famous historic Wharf was built in 1862 from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Co.
There are lots of things for the kids to
do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.
Tathra's is also blessed with lots of cafes that serve good coffee.

Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, gold was discovered on the lower slopes of Gulaga in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores, and the famous Cheese Factory, all located on Central Tilba’s main street.
Central Tilba Farm CabinsEver wondered what happens on a real working farm? Central Tilba Farm Cabins offers you the opportunity to find out.The cabins are located at ‘Braeside’, an historic 350 acre Tilba property at the foot of spectacular Mt. Dromedary (Gulaga Mountain) with lots of beautiful bush. There are 4 fully self-contained cabins, each one separated from the others to ensure privacy. An open fireplace, well-stocked with split wood, guarantees cosy evenings for the
whole family. The cabins are a 3 minute drive to Central Tilba, and only 5 minutes to the beach, and are a perfect base for exploring all the fabulous sites of the local area. Talk to hosts Ron and Tralee, and you might even be able to bring your pet with you! Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet.
Tucked between the coastal ranges and the ocean, Narooma is the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday.
The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in.
Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit. Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination, you can take a National Parks & Wildlife Service tour of the island covering its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages.
The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000
little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea.
Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as on of the best in Australia.

Art, music and boats at Narooma Traditional Boats Afloat FestivalWhat started out as a gathering of like-minded lovers of wooden boats back in 2006 has grown into a major event for the township of Narooma. The Narooma Boats Afloat Festival, held on November 1st - 3rd, celebrates traditionally built timber clinkers and carvels, and attracts enthusiasts from all around south east Australia.
The Festival this year includes an art exhibition on a maritime theme - "Art in the Boatsheds", held in two side-by-side boatsheds in Forsters Bay from 10am - 5pm. The exhibition is in association with, and run by, Montague Art and Craft Society. From 12.30pm, you can have a stickybeak at these beautiful vessels
and chat to the skippers, then from 2pm there's "Jazz on the Water' with Second Time Around. On Sunday, from 10.30am - 12pm the Fleet will cruise down Wagonga Inlet under the bride, incorporating a Grand Parade along the Mill Bay Boardwalk For more information, visit www.naroomaboatsafloat.com

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.
To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.
Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rsuh Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.
After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.
Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.
There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.Mogo Zoo won the Tourist Attraction category and the People's Choice Award at the 2012 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards.
Congratulations to the Original Gold Rush Colony and Mogo Zoo on their recent awards - they certainly did Mogo proud.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years.
The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia.
Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.
Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town.
The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations.
Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.
Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.
There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance.
Enjoy the scenery along the Kings Highway on the way to the historic town of Braidwood with its beautiful buildings and interesting shops.
The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.
Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee.
Head north to Durras Lake for a spot of fishing, bushwalk in the Murramarang National Park or say hello to the kangaroos at Pebbly Beach.
