Experimental investigation of mode-I fracture toughness of real-cracked concrete repaired by epoxy Yu-Cheng Kan , Ming-Gin Lee, Hung-Wei Lee Chaoyang University of Technology, Taiwan, ROC highlights Epoxy resin and mortar make the repaired cracked-concrete become more ductile. Epoxy mortar improves the fracture properties of cracked concrete. Three fracture paths of epoxy- repaired concrete were observed graphical abstract article info Article history: Received 19 September 2020 Received in revised form 2 March 2021 Accepted 24 April 2021 Available online 11 May 2021 Keywords: Fracture Toughness Concrete Crack Epoxy Repair abstract This paper presents the behavior of fracture mechanics and fracture properties of epoxy-repaired con- crete in Mode I fracture. A single-edged notch (SEN) beam in a three-point bending test was conducted to evaluate the fracture properties of plain concrete and the repaired of itself. The testing methods rec- ommended by RILEM: (a) two-parameter model by Jenq and Shah and (b) fictitious model by Hillerborg were used to determine the fracture toughness and fracture energy, respectively. Epoxy mortars with four fine sand contents were used to repair concrete crack with various widths. The test results revealed that epoxy resin and mortar improve the fracture toughness and fracture energy of the repaired concrete. And, the both are increasing with the increase of the fine sand content in epoxy mortar up to the amount that the workability being allowed. The Mode I fracture behavior of the repaired concrete performs higher fracture resistance and more ductile than plain concrete. Ó 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. 1. Introduction As the concept of sustainable building attracts more and more concerns, the tasks of maintenance and rehabilitation become more significant in order to extend the service life of structures as well as to reduce the overall impact of the built environment and energy consumption. A plenty of researches dealing with con- crete repair, rehabilitation and retrofitting [1], and service life modelling and prediction of durability [2] have been conducted based on durability design and specification. In the United States and European countries, rehabilitation projects are increasing, which provide the owners a more economical and efficient alterna- tive instead of new construction projects. In these projects, a large part of the costs is spent on the polymer materials for concrete repair and strengthening. It seems valid and necessary to figure out the fracture properties of concrete repaired by this type of material - in particular, epoxy resin. 1.1. Epoxy application in concrete repair Epoxy is the most commonly used repair material for cracks in concrete structures. Epoxy resins have excellent adhesive qualities and will bond to nearly all construction materials, in particular, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.conbuildmat.2021.123490 0950-0618/Ó 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
