PTA ReportWelcome, parents and caregivers to the 2017 school year. Whether your student is just beginning at JHC or is returning to school a year older and wiser, I hope you are refreshed and ready to give the PTA a little of your time this year, to support the school staff in their best endeavours for our children. We have been very fortunate to have a good core of familiar faces on the Committee for some years, but some will step down in March - so please join

us at our next meeting on Tuesday 21 Feb at 7.00 pm at the Senior Campus staff room, where we will outline the year’s programme and how you can help by giving a little of your time.

The Year 8 GATE Deep South Agents of Change presenting their gifts to the Cancer Society.

Last year this Year 8 GATE group investigated charitable organisations helping people within our local community. As a group Natasha, Bailee, Talia, Olivia, Eilish and Anna chose to find out more about the work of Ronald McDonald House and the Cancer Society. They undertook some real-life problem solving to come up with a solution to assist these organisations. After consultation with Ronald McDonald House and the Cancer Society, the group decided to make gifts for people using Ronald McDonald House or the Cancer Society services.Skills such as budgeting, communication, public relations, networking, time management and organisation were used. The group made connections in the community and worked hard together as a team, while also having fun.Thank you to Bryan Townley, Ascot Park Hotel, Dentist on Kelvin Street and Dougherty Dentists for supporting the investigation.

Congratulations to the following students who achieved their Oral Communication

Further Staffing News from the Junior Campus:

Lea Mulvey retired at the end of 2016 having been our Sports co-ordinator since 1999. Lea was well known for her games and competitive spirit, and her love of sport, especially tennis. Over the years she organised countless lunchtime competitions, keeping the students busy and having fun. Lea managed and coached many teams and gave countless students opportunities in sports, encouraging all to give sport a go. We wish her all the best in her retirement.

We farewelled Marie Scully at the end of 2016. Marie was with us for one and a half years, teaching Year 8 in 2015 and last year Marie taught a Year 7 class. We thank Marie for all she did for our school and students, and wish her well for the future.

Welcome into the Junior Campus canteen Donna Heathcote. Donna has considerable experience in the food industry, and is well known for her fabulous slices. Our students (and staff) are looking forward to sampling her canteen fare.

The age of e-mail contact has had the effect of making teacher/parent and teacher/student communication much easier, and, as a result, much more frequent! Generally this has been very positive for all of us.Whilst staff accessibility is encouraged, we have recognised the need for some guidelines in order to allow staff to “switch off” after normal work hours. (Part of being a “Good Employer”).

Guidelines/Expectations• We recognise that parents often

send e-mails in evenings or weekends. (When they have time to attend to parenting issues!) However, staff are not expected to read or reply to e-mails after hours (ie during evenings, weekends or holidays).

• Staff response time will be variable according to their workload and teaching pressures. They are expected to acknowledge your email the next working day, and, where required, follow up with a more detailed response as soon as practicable (generally within two more days).

• Online accessibility of teachers by students follows the same guidelines, ie:• queries and questions may not

be read or answered “after hours”

• response times will vary• responses will be made as soon

as practicable

World Challenge Vietnam Trips

Thailand Trip

Latin and Classical Studies Trip to the Mediterranean

Over the Christmas break, 21 students had the experience of a lifetime in Vietnam on their World Challenge Expedition. Two teams travelled all over the country for an entire month, exploring cultural sites, bustling cities and quiet tribal villages. What made this trip different was the students were in charge of the budget,

finding accomodation, sourcing transport and deciding what to do every day. During their expedition both teams engaged in an Acclimatization phase, a Community Project phase, a Trekking phase, and a Rest and Relaxation phase. Team Vang (travelling South to North) had their emotions challenged at the Hoi An Centre

for the Disabled and Elderly, while Team Do (travelling North to South) spent a week interacting with street orphans in Danang. Experiencing both Christmas and New Year in a largely Buddhist, Communist country is certainly a memory we will never forget!

Thailand - what an amazing place! The rice paddies and mountains, the huge, gentle elephants, the warm weather, stunning temples, incredible food and wonderful, kind and generous people. And the shopping! Such fun learning to barter for goods. Eight of us travelled together through Thailand in January - five Hargest girls, a dad, Chris and Carolyn Davies (CD Leadership (NZ) Ltd) and myself, Ms Chilton-Smith. There were so many highlights; the two main ones being the Mae Kok Foundation in the hill country, Chiang Rai, where we worked, played and lived for three days, taking part in the lives of the children who are taken care of there. We also brought them donations of clothing books and stationery. The other highlight was living with host families of students from Princess Royal College in Chiang Mai, who shared their homes and culture with us. They were all so welcoming. We then spent a few days in Bankok which had a very exciting buzz about it and lots of people. This was a highly educational trip; being immersed in another culture and learning about Thailand, from where a large number of our International Students come, and it was a lot of fun. Every day we spent in Thailand was hugely interesting and a delight.

After many months of preparation and fund-raising, the day for the Latin group of 21 students and some supportive adults had finally arrived. Forty hours after leaving Invercargill we arrived in Rome and headed straight to the MSC cruise ship.We travelled to Genoa first, then south to Malta, Athens, Cyprus, Rhodes and Crete spending a day touring at each stop. Each day had new sights and experiences with the most exciting excursion being in Malta where we all piled into 8 open air jeeps and drove across a mix of terrains to different venues. As soon as we returned to the ship each day everyone rushed to the 24-hour buffet intake.During the “at sea” days on the ship the outside spa pools were very popular for the Hargest students or in the ‘teen’s club’ where they met loads of new friends from different countries. After saying goodbye to our ship we had a further five days in Rome. We visited some famous buildings, learnt five attack strokes with a sword at gladiator school and drove down to Naples to see Mt Vesuvius and the Pompeii ruins. The students certainly had their studies brought to life!

Fitness TrackJunior Campus

The Junior Campus athletics sports will be held on Tuesday 7 March at Surrey Park from 9.00am to approximately 2.30pm. Postponement days are Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th. As full school participation is expected, a note explaining non-participation must be sent to the child’s classroom teacher before the day. Athletics day requires a lot of organisation and parent/caregiver helpers would be greatly appreciated. If you can help, please advise your child’s teacher either by note or in their diary. You do not need to have previous experience in helping with athletics to be a valuable helper on the day. If you have any questions please contact Mrs Saunders at school.

Information regarding trials, games times, draw, etc is posted on the sports notice board in Mrs Smith’s office window (on the east side of the hall). Students are also reminded to check the daily notices for information regarding sports being offered by the school and trial times, practices etc. Mrs Smith, Sports Coordinator, has permission slips for sports.

Congratulations to Rhylee Akeroyd and Jaz McLeod who, at the end of 2016, participated in the Cycling Southland, Southland Track Championship. At the Junior Campus we support talented sports performers by providing opportunities that focus on developing five key abilities, physical, thinking, social, personal and creative. We aim to establish targets for gifted and talented athletes and provide opportunities to develop self-management and discipline.Students have the opportunity to be with other like-minded, skilled sportspeople and enjoy a wide range of activities. The Multi Skilled Sports Academy in 2017 will be split into two 16 week blocks; Intake 1 and Intake 2, which will cater for up to 24 students in total.Sessions are held on Thursday mornings from 10.30 am – 12.05 pm, this allows students to be back in time for assembly. The programme offers a wide range of different activities such as team building, sports psychology, nutrition and cross training opportunities such as spin, crossfit, circuits and pilates sessions. The subsidised cost of $50 assists in covering the costs of activities involving specialist classes and guest speakers.

Selection CriteriaThis programme is designed for students who have achieved representative honours at provincial level or higher. Students can be nominated by their homeroom/pe teacher, sports coach or parent. All students who wish to be considered for the programme must fill in an application form outlining their sporting achievements. Applications will be considered and intake places will be offered to students who meet the criteria.Application forms are available from the Junior Campus Office and are due in by Wednesday 15 February. Please contact Mrs Mika if you require any further information. Mrs Valoa-Jack and Room 4 worked very hard last year completing our school’s very first fitness track. Ten stations were created as well as a 200m extension. The equipment was designed and built by the students. A huge thanks to all of our local sponsors and parents for helping make this possible. Friday 9 December saw the grand

opening of the Fitness track with parents, grandparents and sponsors attending the ceremony. Invercargill MP, Sarah Dowie, had the honour of cutting the red ribbon. Following on from this, Evolve Fitness treated the class to an hour of circuit training. Well done to Mrs Valoa-Jack and Room 4.

CyclingILT Cycling Carnival 2017Congratulations to Emily Paterson (Year 11) who was the winner of the O J Henderson Memorial Trophy Under 17 Section and to Nepia Ruwhiu (Year 12) who won the 2017 Open Wheel Race Trophy. AbsencesJunior Campus

Sun SafetyJunior Campus

If your child is absent from school, including being late, please telephone the school office before 9 a.m. on 217 9250. The class roll is taken at 8.55 am and absences are reported to the office at that time. If your child is coming in late, they must go to the office before they go to their class to have their name deleted from the list of absences. If you are aware in advance that your child is going to be absent, please advise the school office. We do try to contact parents/caregivers by txt regarding all unexplained absences.

To protect faces against the summer sun, students may wear plain white caps or hats when outside during summer. They are not to be worn in class and must have the name written on the inside. At the Junior Campus we encourage students to bring their own sunscreen and we also have it available at the school office.

Each morning homeroom classes have the day’s notices read out to them. Notices include information on academic, sports and cultural activities available to students. Practice times etc. are also included. These notices are available on the James Hargest web site after 11.00am.

Student cell phones are off and in pockets or in bags unless specifically instructed by teacher “it is okay to have them out” and only then if they are used for educational purposes. Cell phones may be confiscated if they are used inappropriately (eg in class or in the playground).

ATTENDANCE• Parents are reminded that every day

at school is important and students are required to attend unless they are sick or have a very good reason.

• Holidays during term time are a big disadvantage to your child’s learning. Teachers may help a child to catch up where they can, but that is not an expectation of the school.

• Senior Campus classes start at 8.55am. It is frustrating for teachers when students arrive late, interrupt the flow of a lesson and need teacher time to re-explain the lesson’s introduction. Please ensure your child is at school on time every day.

Health NurseJunior Campus

The Health Nurse, Mrs Lyn Sanderson, is available at the Junior Campus during term one. If you have any concerns please phone the school office and we will arrange for Mrs Sanderson to contact you. If students wish to see the Health Nurse they are able to make an appointment by placing a request in the green post box in the office foyer.

A Sportsmed Southern Physio Physiotherapist is available at the Senior Campus for Junior and Senior Campus students and teachers on Wednesdays and Fridays. There is no charge if you are covered by ACC (normally $15 adults and $10 students). Students must have a consent form signed by a parent/caregiver before making an appointment. Consent forms and bookings are available at the Senior Campus sick bay office.

If you are feeling sick and need to go home, you must go through sick bay.The ladies will contact your parents to arrange having you picked up or will seek permission for you to walk home. You must not just sign yourself out.

If your child is absent for more than three days due to illness, we would appreciate a medical certificate. There is a high level of correlation between attendance and academic achievement. We need students to be in class whenever possible.

Please exercise consideration when dropping off and picking up students on both Layard Street and Queens Drive and do not park, even temporarily, over our neighbours’ driveways. It would be appreciated if parents would refrain from driving onto the school grounds from Layard Street (in the front of the office) to drop their children at school. This is a driveway and we are concerned that the congestion and confusion this can cause may lead to an accident.

Business DayYear 8 Taking Care of Business Launch Day

At the end of Term 4, the Year 8’s held their Taking Care of Business Inquiry Launch Day. Students worked together in a collaborative group to create a product to sell to Year 5, 6 and 7 students. All profits were donated to charities chosen by each Year 8 class. Over $1800 was raised by the Year 8 students through selling their created products. Charities which benefited from these profits include The Cancer Society, SPCA, Koru Care, Lifeline and Hospice Southland. All selected charities have sent letters of appreciation to the Year 8 classes. Thank you to James Hargest College Year 7 students, Windsor North School and Waihopai School for visiting our launch day.
