Small Packages, Great Things

The mo o for Hershey’s Kisses used to be “Big things come in small packages!” That also could be a mo o for Bethlehem, for Baby Jesus and, indeed, for us. It’s an important message to remember when we fear we’re too weak to fix the world’s problems, too small to fight the gigan c terror that threatens a loved one or too lacking in abili es we see in others.

God’s ruler for Israel started as an infant. His birthplace was a small stable, not a palace or temple. But size isn’t everything. Big — that is, great — things can come in small packages. Message from the

President

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! A new Church Year and new beginnings! It is Advent! As we contemplate the meaning of our Lord’s birth – of Christ’s coming among us ‐ we consider what it means for Christ to be in and part of our lives. Advent – a me of wai ng and an cipa on, a me of looking forward to a new Church year of grace and hope!

How fi ng that we should have our Annual Mee ng at this me! The Fall, and especially November, is the me when Council looks forward to the next year’s mission and ministry. Council has approved a Ministry Spending Plan for the Congrega on’s considera on, and hopefully approval, at our Annual Mee ng on December 2. What is a Ministry Spending Plan you might ask – well it is o en referred to as the annual budget. But in reality what Council is asking the Congrega on to approve is a spending plan to fulfill the mission and ministry to which we, Emmanuel, have been called by God. Sure there are numbers behind the Ministry Plan – salaries, building maintenance, snow removal – the everyday minu a of answering God’s call to ministry. But the cri cal message is to see and understand all that we as the Body of Christ at Emmanuel have been called and blessed to do to bring the message of mercy and grace we receive through Christ Jesus to each other, our community, and God’s glorious crea on.

The Congrega on also will be asked to authorize using funds from the Good Shepherd account to re re the roughly $11,000 balance on the roof loan. While the Raindrops Campaign did raise about $68,000 that has been used to pay down the roof loan, we are s ll a bit short. The money we do not use to pay the roof loan in 2019 will allow us to be er serve the ministries here at Emmanuel.

Our Mission 100 and Miracle Sunday pledge campaigns have provided a guide regarding the resources that will be available for mission. We are planning a Stewardship weekend event in February that will help us all develop a true “a tude for gra tude.” It is the case that pledges during stewardship campaigns are es mates and provide, at best, guidance for what may be received in the coming year. The numbers for what it actually takes to meet God’s call to us are much firmer. The difference is most assuredly measured in our faith. And during my 30+ years at Emmanuel our faith has never let us down – God has provided and con nues to provide to assure that we can fulfill God’s call to ministry.

This is my last le er to you as President. I thank you, the wonderful people of Emmanuel, for the privilege of serving. I will con nue to serve in other ways, just as we all serve our Lord through the mission and ministries in this place at this me.

Blessings to you all,

Ben Beard

November is a month to join with your loved ones and give thanks. It’s also a me to celebrate your friendship with a feast. The youth of Emmanuel love the idea of both fellowship and food, so we had a potluck lunch to celebrate and give thanks! The Lutherans of mes present and past would have been proud to see what kind of potluck these kids provided for one another! And to no one’s surprise, the quiet down me you may witness a er your everyday Thanksgiving feast was not observed here. Instead, all 20 kids were given a new energy to play games both inside and out! We had so much fun!

Looking ahead, the youth will be performing a na vity Christmas program on Sunday, December 23, during the morning church service. Volunteers have signed up for their parts, and now it’s me to prac ce!

There are many ways to be involved in the missions and ministries at Emmanuel. All you have to do is let us know what you hold interest in, what your gi s are, what you like to do! Call the Church Office at 208‐882‐3915 or email

at [email protected]. Help is always needed in the following areas! What would YOU like to do?

Sunday Morning Ministry Servant?

Our worship at Emmanuel is enriched when a variety of members par cipate. There are many areas of help needed on Sundays. Have you ever wanted to learn more about being an Assis ng Minister, Communion Assistant, Greeter & Thanker, on Altar Guild, an Acolyte, a Counter, a Scripture Reader, an Usher, make Communion Bread, lead a Sunday School class, co‐lead our J.A.M. ‐ Jesus and Me children’s class? Contact the Church Office and we can tell you more about these worship areas! These ac vi es do not require any special skills, just a desire to par cipate. Training sessions are available.

Love kids?

Doesn’t ma er what age, we have opportuni es for working with every age! Let us know!

Women’s Ministry?

ELCW (Emmanuel Lutheran Church Women) have

monthly circle mee ngs and quil ng twice a month, plus many other opportuni es to make a difference.

Are you an “Old Dude?”

Our men’s group, the “Old Dudes,” meet every Wednesday morning at 7 AM for breakfast & devo ons or coffee & Fellowship.

How about photographs?

Do you like taking pictures? Hanging pictures? Looking at and organizing pictures? There are many areas where “camera savvy” folks are needed!

Altar Flowers?

Sign up to bring Flowers for the Altar on a Sunday morning. It couldn’t get simpler than this… sign up,

CindyMarie will email you the preceding Monday to remind you. Bring your arrangement before church, take it home a er church, and enjoy it at home!

Fellowship Host?

Each Emmanuel family helps out with Sunday morning fellowship privileges on a rota ng basis once every few months. A le er with the schedule and instruc ons is sent to each family as well as a reminder postcard sent a few days before your scheduled Sunday. If you have not been asked to serve yet, please let us know.

Are you Musical?

Be a part of the Adult Choir, Emmanuel

Bells or other musical offering. We also have a Children’s Choir and Children’s Chime Choir.

Do you like to write?

Are you good with pen and paper? Do you like to write ar cles? We are looking for ways to make the Emphasis more interes ng. Share your ideas! Contact CindyMarie in the office!

Can you cook?

You don’t even have to know how to cook... just how to buy food… or drive food! At mes, members of our church family find themselves in temporarily stressful situa ons and could use a meal provided to them (due to sickness, accident, etc.). If you know of a member who might benefit from this gesture, or would like be on the list to provide a meal or deliver a prepared meal, please contact us.

Quiet Room Clean‐up?

(5 minutes): At the end of worship you need to wipe

down the counters, door knobs, table and chairs. Also, do a quick clean up of toys, if necessary. If bathroom or diaper genie needs immediate a en on, please take care of this as well, otherwise, our cleaning service will clean during the week.

Call the Church Office at 208.882.3915 or email us at [email protected] if you can help out!
