8 University Policies and Resources8.1 4H STEM Ambassador Program

STEM Ambassadors are trained USM students who facilitate hands-on science, technology, engineer-ing, and math projects with kids ages 8-14. This is a fun opportunity to work with youth while developingskills in leadership, project planning, presentation, problem-solving, and communication. Training andmaterials are provided during two training sessions in the beginning of the semester. STEM Ambas-sadors commit to participate in volunteer training, individual preparation for their lessons, and six one-hour workshops at community partner host sites, such as local libraries, classrooms, or after-schoolprograms. The program is managed by the Office of Community Engagement and Career Development(https://usm.maine.edu/community-engagement-career-development/4-h-stem-ambassadors). Ifyou complete the program during the semester, you will get credit for the equivalent of a technical reportas an extra credit. For more information, contact Lauren Porter at [email protected].

8.2 Academic Support for Students with Disabilities

The university is committed to providing students with documented disabilities equal access to all uni-versity programs and services. If you think you have a disability and would like to request accommo-

The Dis-ability Services Center can be reached by calling 207-780-4706 or by email at [email protected] you have already received a faculty accommodation letter from the Disability Services Center for thecurrent semester, please provide me with that information as soon as possible. Please make a privateappointment so that we can review your accommodations.

At any point in the semester, if you encounter difficulty with the course or feel that you could beperforming at a higher level, consult with me. Students experience difficulty in courses for a variety ofreasons. The following are resources on campus for students.

• For writing skills or time management, you can make an appointment to see a student tutor atthe Learning Commons located in both the Portland and Gorham libraries. For more information, visit http://www.usm.maine.edu/learningcommons. The Writing Center at LAC is also availableto all USM students and is a great option for students living in the greater Lewiston/Auburn area. For more information, please visit http://usm.maine.edu/writingcenter.
