Scm presents the new IoT for “Industry 4.0”14

Once again, Xylexpo is focusing our at-tention and filling up the pages of the ma-gazine. As you will see, we talk about theexhibition, but most of all about the contentspresented by this industry review. The press releases we have received inthe past few weeks witness to the successof the five-day exhibition attended by theleading market actors: virtually all "bigones" and a few smaller companies de-clared that Xylexpo was a "source of or-ders".Those who hoped to see the big crowd ofpast editions in the early 2000's were notfully satisfied, but the exhibition - as wesaid several times - follows the transfor-mation of an industry that is getting moreand more "practical", professional, focusedon high technology. So, Xylexpo is not anexhibition for everyone, but mostly forthose with clear plans…

Let us point out that we also have severalpages dedicated to other contents of theexhibition: we report about Xia-XylexpoInnovation Award, between the lines ofa few articles, and most of all we tell youabout the statements we collected atsome of the most important events andspeeches inside Xylexpo Arena. This was actually one of our greatest re-grets, namely seeing great speakers withvery interesting contents address an au-dience that, at least in terms of quantity, was not up to their value.

Let's say it clearly, our country really needsknowledge, updates, opportunity for re-flection: Xylexpo Arena offered an agendawith valuable events, renowned speakers, topics and subjects that are almost totallyunknown to most… and instead theyshould know much better.

It's a pity. Let's recover during the summerbreak, when many of our readers will cer-tainly find some time to leaf through ourpages. Enjoy your summer!

NEWS

EVENTS Scm North America welcomed Congressman Rob Woodall

CEFLAA five-year period of growth

ACIMALLPresented the new “Annual Report”

Scm welcomed at its Duluth, GA, branch Con-gressman Rob Woodall, the U.S. Representativefor Georgia’s seventh congressional district andone of the Trump legislative top figures. TheRepublican congressman participated in ScmNorth America‘s “Meet and Greet” event onJune 1st, illustrating to local organizations andbusinesses in his district (companies, law firmsand training institutions) the current manufactu-ring-related priorities on the political agenda. There to welcome Mr.Woodall were AndreaAureli, Scm Group Ceo, and Giuseppe Riva,Scm North America Country Manager. Amongthose present were representatives of the localadministration and the Chamber of Commerce,as well as Ryan Kurtz, Honorary Consul for Italyin Atlanta. The U.S. congressman’s visit was anopportunity to discuss the main concerns ofcompanies operating in this area of the UnitedStates. In Georgia alone there are over 2,500companies operating in the Woodworking District, producing furniture, doors and window framesand woodworking machinery. Scm, with itsrecord double-digit growth rate in the U.S.market, now speaks for the entire industry, which asks the Trump legislative to offer propersupport again to the manufacturing sector.“Our U.S. revenues have more than doubledover the last four years” says Andrea Aureli,Scm Group Ceo. “Today, the American marketaccounts for 20 percent of the Group’s exports, and the first half of this year shows a double-digit growth rate, higher than the average inthe Woodworking District. Hirings are also onthe rise. We are opening new offices with

commercial per-sonnel and techni-cal assistants andare looking for en-terprising and dy-namic young peo-ple, because de-spite the numerousjob applications we receive we always needmore. The scarcity of specialized technicians– to work on the production floor, providemaintenance service and develop softwareapplications – who are familiar with the newIndustry 4.0 digital developments, is a veryserious problem, also in the United States, and especially in the woodworking industry. An industry which due to its economic and in-dustrial importance, with 2,500 companies op-erating in Georgia along, should be supportedby the government, just as the automotiveand aerospace industries are for example”says Giuseppe Riva of Scm North America.“Woodall pushed for the Carl D.Perkins Voca-tional and Technical Education Act, which theUnited States Congress passed and whichcalls for allocating considerable federal fundsfor improving technical and professional edu-cation meant for the manufacturing sector. Now, American colleges should offer morecourses focused on woodworking”.Woodall, as a member of the House Transportationand Infrastructure Committee, is also amongthe promoters of the Trump Administration’s 200Billion Infrastructure Plan for repairing and im-proving the aging U.S. infrastructure. ■

During the general assembly meeting of Acimall(we talk about it on page 4), has been presentedthe new edition of the “Annual Report” byAcimall, the traditional statistical document thatsums up the figures of the previous year. The report – downloadable free of charge fromhttp://www.acimall.com/upload/blocchi/X128al-legato1-1X_acimall_annual_report_2018.pdf –offers an in-depth overview of the wood technologyindustry: from lobbying actions to the full list ofAcimall member companies, the document pro-vides a rich set of figures and charts about Italianand global economy, trends in the mechanicalequipment industry, and key indicators of Italianwoodworking technology in 2017 (production, export, import, apparent consumption etc.).The final section is very interesting, with a com-parison of export figures for the most importantwood and furniture technology producing countries, namely Italy, Germany, China, Taiwan, Austriaand the United States. ■

Cefla closes 2017 with a plus 20 percent ofthe value of production, compared to theprevious year, confirming the growth trendfor the fifth consecutive year. The turnover, equal to about 528 million euros, consolidatesthe contribution of foreign subsidiaries (com-mercial and manufacturing) positioned instrategic markets such as the United States,China and Russia, with an export percentageof 54 percent. The economic performance ofCefla, always attentive to cost containment,is accompanied by a good financial position. The net financial position remains positive, net of over 20 million euros of investments."Although profitability indicators have in-creased in absolute terms − explains Chair-man Gianmaria Balducci −, the increasein volumes with a different product/countrymix compared to 2016 led to a drop ofaround one percentage point on Ebitda. However, the double-digit increase inturnover largely justifies the sacrifice ofmargins; the record net result of about 25million euro supports our choices, gratifyingall the stakeholders: customers, suppliers, banks and working members".Cefla employs approximately 2,000 employeesworldwide, of which about 1,400 in Italy; inparticular, in Italy there are more than 1,400employees, with a growth of 150 jobs com-pared to 2016. In addition, on 2017 has beensigned the preliminary agreement of thePatent Box with the Italian Revenue Agencyfor a significant part of its portfolio of over600 intellectual property rights, patents, tra-demarks and designs. Cefla is part of thefirst 20 large companies in Italy to have ob-tained this recognition from the tax authorities, confirming a constant commitment to researchand development. Over the next three years, the management of the Group, which sinceJanuary 2018 has taken advantage of thenew general management in the person ofAndrea Formica, will be oriented towards afurther phase of growth for both internal andexternal lines. ■

XYLEXPO 2018, INNOVATION

ACIMALL

ACIMALL, 2017 INDUSTRY REPORT

BOARD OF DIRECTORS CONFIRMEDDuring the general assembly held last June22, the Confindustria member associationrepresenting the Italian manufacturers ofwoodworking machinery and tools decidedto extend the term of its management byone more year. The decision was driven bythe desire to ensure continuity and forward-looking considerations, namely the intentionto build different relations with the youngergenerations of entrepreneurs, encouragingtheir active involvement in the promotion ofindustry interests. The highlight of the eventwas the speech by president Lorenzo Pri-multini, who listed the proactive collaborationagreements with Italian and European or-ganizations and institutions, and then illus-trated the goals that Acimall has always pur-sued, first of all global promotion. In thisarea, Xylexpo, as world-class event, is anace in the hole, as confirmed by the latestedition hosting 425 exhibitors and 17,781unique visitors totaling 37 thousand accesses.“It was a big moment for the Italian industry –Primultini told the assembly, talking aboutprojects until 2020 – and we are already wor-king at the next edition, supported by anindustry that is really healthy not only aroundthe world, but also in Italy, where our industryreached a production value of 2,272 millioneuro in 2017, with 1.4 billion euro export”.The assembly approved the extension ofterm of office for the Board of Directors, comprised of president Lorenzo Primultini(Primultini, Marano Vicentino) and vice pres-idents Luigi de Vito (Scm Group, Rimini)and Raphael Prati (Biesse Group, Pesaro),and board members Remo Costa (CostaLevigatrici, Thiene), Marianna Daschini (Gre-da, Mariano Comense), Pierluigi Paoletti(Paoletti, Lentiai), Umberto Pizzi (Pgs, Bor-gosesia), Giovanni Sedino (Finiture, Saonara)and Gianluca Storti (Storti, Motta Baluffi). Then, the association arbitrators were elected(Consuelo Curtolo of Cursal in San Fior,Franco Paviotti of Metal World in Pavia diUdine and Gabriele Laghi of Sistemi in Pe-saro) and the financial auditor PierpaoloGrisetti of Studio Grisetti, Monti, Spanu inMilan.

Every year, the Studies office of Acimall, the Con-findustria member association that representswoodworking machinery and tools manufacturers, issues an industry report, a source of up-to-date information about the development of the in-dustry and the association activity accessible toa large audience. The annual report also includesa detailed analysis of final industry figuresin 2017. The Italian production of woodworkingmachine tools amounted to 2,272 million euro, with an increase by more than 10 percent com-pared to the previous year. This is a niche sectorwith two unique elements and very high addedvalue. The first one is the trade balance, positiveby 1,400 million euro, offering a major contributionto Italy's trade surplus. The second element isthe share on apparent consumption, equal to 70percent, which is really high: this means that theItalian woodworking industry, world leader for de-sign and quality, prefers to purchase made-in-Italy technology. This is further evidence thatItalian machinery manufacturers can respond ef-fectively to all customers, wherever they are. Alsoin 2017, incentives for Industry 4.0 initiativesdrove the expansion of Italian technology ordersin Italy. The turnover of the domestic market wasvery close to 700 million euro, up by 21.1 percentfrom 2016. Looking at historical trends, in 2008the Italian production of woodworking machinesand tools amounted to 2,123 million euro, beforeeconomic depression caused a loss by 40 percentpoints approximately. It was a real shock that putItalian companies to a hard test: unfortunately, the reaction of companies was not fast and busi-ness reorganization processes were ineffective. The rebound was not significant and in 2011 thelevels of Italian production were still 20 percentbelow pre-crisis volumes. The following years, until early 2014, were theworst of this historical period. Stagnation involvedthe domestic market and most foreign markets, while the industry showed a widening gap betweenthe positive trend of bigger companies and thenegative trend of low-revenue businesses. This situation is still visible today, as the interna-tionalization process in most markets is no longerlimited to export alone, but it increasingly involvesprocesses and operations such as joint ventures, direct foreign investments or mergers with localactors, even in remote markets. Obviously, not allindustry companies can adopt such approachon a global scale. Back to historical trends, therewas a clear turning point in 2014. The US market, often considered a forerunner of economic trends, started to grow at double-digit rates, and graduallyalso European and Asian markets showed asimilar trend. The years 2016 and 2017 werecharacterized by strong expansion on the domesticmarket. For two consecutive years, the domesticdemand of Italian technology increased by morethan twenty percent. The report then focuses onthe international trade of the most important wo-odworking machinery manufacturers.Germany preserves its historical leadership withover 2.2 billion euro worth of equipment exportedin 2017, mainly due to the lack of competitors inspecific segments, especially upstream the supplychain. Italy remains at number two, close to oneand a half billion euro of exported goods, with anextensive market coverage as a result of globali-zation policies that range from direct export, toreseller sales, up to foreign offices and sometimeseven manufacturing sites abroad. According totradition, the Italian offer is mostly concentratedin secondary wood processing, especially panelprocessing, although there are leaders also inother sectors. China has maintained the thirdposition and has become an established manu-facturing actor all over the world. Product prices, very affordable, have always been the key strengthof Asian industries, but in recent years the te-chnological standards of machinery have improved, which will inevitably lead to an adjustment ofconsumer prices. The most important business is

still traditional machines. The ranking of the top-six global exporting countries is completed byTaiwan, Austria and the United States. The full document is published on the acimall.comwebsite and is accessible to all users. So, all in all, 2017 was more than positive. Whatcan we expect in 2018? Preliminary figures pu-blished by Acimall's Studies office suggest thatthe end-of-year sign will still be positive, thoughless than in recent years. On the export side, re-cent figures indicate an increase by approxi-mately 3 percent, mainly supported by the con-solidation of top destination markets. On the domestic side, the positive effect of in-centives introduced with the Industria 4.0 planhas faded, although the super-amortization andthe Sabatin bis law, both still active, are an intere-sting lever for investments in production plants. Finally, 2018 was the year of Xylexpo, the biennialexhibition of woodworking technology held inMilan from 8 to 12 May. The trend of the event re-flected the health of the market, as usual. Thegap is widening between structured organizationsthat can introduce continuous product innovationsand consequently achieve great results at anexhibition, and companies that, without any stra-tegic renovation of their products and marketing, cannot seize all the opportunities available on theinternational markets.

We have almost already forgotten about the fiftiethedition of Xylexpo: time flies, but the Milan eventand what it represents are still topics of discussion...We still haven't had the opportunity to tell youhow things have gone. Well, with social mediaand the Internet, you know everything, and eachof you will have an opinion. So, if you allow, we will just provide the essentialinformation, figures that must be repeated, andsome remarks. Starting from innovation, from thecontents of new up-to-date technologies that theMilan trade fair center has hosted. “We havenever seen so much automation and so manyadvanced systems in any other exhibition aroundthe world!”. This was a recurring statement in theaisles of Xylexpo, the biennial international exhibitionof technology and systems for the wood and fur-niture industry, held at FieraMilano-Rho last May8 to 12. In terms of contents, the event has keptits promise: plenty of technology for secondaryoperation industries, from panels to solid wood;the best offer of furniture manufacturing systems;and the most advanced "Industry X.0" solutions. The exhibition has been rewarded by a substantialflow of industry visitors, with 17,781 operators,2.1 percent more than the previous edition. Amongthem, 5,032 came from abroad, 28.3 percent oftotal attendance, basically in line with 2016.Of course, good results for Italy, with 12,749 in-dustry professionals, up by 3.3 percent from theprevious edition, accounting for 71.7 percent oftotal attendance. On the whole, the expo centerrecorded 37 thousand accesses.“With these figures we can say that Xylexpohas found its place in the more and more crowd-ed and sometimes messy landscape of industryexhibitions”, commented Dario Corbetta, directorof the exhibition. “We have made a clear choice, namely to be a stage for "high technology", andthis approach has increased the participationof an even more selected and qualified audience, with decision-making power and adequate ex-pertise”.Such "repositioning" has drawn the attention ofindustry operators, who know well what Xylexpocan offer them in this new season.A “controversial” decision, this seems to be thebest fitting definition so far, was the addition ofthe fourth hall: on one side, it made this editionmuch richer, allowing to set up a layout that betterreflected the ambitions of Xylexpo 2018, reaching34,785 square meters of net exhibition surfacehosting 425 exhibitors (116 of them from 27 coun-tries); on the other, it actually "diluted" the crowdof visitors over a much wider area, so many hadthe impression that "there were few people”. Onthe contrary, figures indicate that the event hasbasically "held on", and you should also considerthat there were no schools or "tourists" (forgivethis brutal definition), but rather operators withtangible interest to meet companies; this generateda climate of widespread optimism, described inseveral "post-event" press releases mentioning"record business" in the Xylexpo aisles. As amatter of fact, work has already started for thenext Xylexpo, to be held from Monday 25 toFriday 29, May 2020, changing the traditional

Tuesday-to-Saturday timeframe. In the minds oforganizers, this will be just the first innovation thatwill introduce in two years' time, as they arestrongly determined to transform Xylexpo into anexhibition that can innovate on a continuousbasis. Looking forward to the results of these newstrategies, let us mention the countless meetingsand event that filled the exhibition agenda: wewill report about some of them in this and thenext issue of our magazine. We will close our report of the 50th anniversaryedition – don't forget that last May Xylexpo turned50: happy birthday!!!! – with the results of thefourth edition of Xia-Xylexpo Innovation Award, another topic that has quickly hit the headlines. In the Primary operation and solid wood processingcategory, the first prize went to Paolino Baccifor “Master MAX”, “The machine combines pro-ductivity and flexibility for the production ofcomplex parts, included curved ones, featuringan original workpiece clamping system”, goesthe jury report. The second place went to the ma-chining center "Logos Life Evo XS 2353 Executive"by Working Process, followed by "Maestro Smar-tech" of Scm Group. In the Panel processing ca-tegory, first prize to Vitap Costruzioni Mecca-niche for “K2 2.”, “This ultra-compact machinecan execute operations on six faces of a panel, including shaped milling thanks to an innovativefloating pressure bar”; at number two HechtElectronic AG with “4i Inline Scanner” and atnumber three Biesse with the digital platform“Sophia”.The Finishing category was dominated by “Ghost-C” of New Finishing, “High-flexibility system thatcan coat frames, doors and windows in continuousmode through a self-teaching process”, followedby the innovative coating “X-Matt” dbyi Ica andthe “Gouge aggregate" signed by Scm Group.Back to finishing, the jury has "appreciated aninteresting finishing and decoration technologyfor interior furniture, based on digital printingsystems with 3D effects. However, this technologywas nominated by two different companies, and the jury, being uncertain about the owner-ship, reluctantly decided not to consider it forthe award". The Tools section, included for the first time in theXia Awards, was dominated by Scm Group withtheir Combined end cutting and rounding unit foredgebanding machines; at number two Biessewith the aggregate “RC60B”, and at number threeOertli with their clamping system “CentrifugalApplied Technology (Cat)”.Among the surprises of the fourth Xia edition, thejury decided to give a special mention to Homagfor the “Autonomous cell (with transbot)” with thefollowing reason: "The jury has given a specialmention to “Autonomous cell” by Homag, thoughnot nominated, for its innovative approach tothe unattended management of manufacturingsites".

There would still be much to say, and you will findmuch more in this and the next issue, as we saidbefore. So, enjoy your reading! (l.r.)

CONTRACT FURNISHINGS IN EUROPE

MARKETS

According to Csil, Centre for industrial studies, the production of Contract furniture and fur-nishings in Europe is worth about Eur 10 billionand it is continuously improving its performanceover the last years. This is a transversal businessbecause it involves different kind of products(upholstery, mattresses, bedrooms, seating, tables, lamps, office, bathroom, kitchen, outdoor furniture)and different destination segments like hospitality, retail, restaurants and bars, office, public spaces, marine, real estate, airports, healthcare and en-tertainment. Furniture firms involved in the contractfurniture and furnishings market can offer pure“turn-key” contract (around 70 percent of thesupply, according to Csil) providing totally finishedprojects, using predominantly custom productionor including products of other firms, or the socalled “soft contract”, do not managing theproject directly and offering mainly standard pro-duct collections. A common key thread emergingin the very heterogeneous contract industry isthe importance of architects and interior de-signers in the process of selecting producers. The final choice of the projects’ suppliers is up tothe clients, but architectural studios can decisivelyinfluence decisions. The overall positive perfor-mance of the European furniture industry observedover the last two years was driven by all the mainsegments. Contract furniture was no exception, with different dynamic across different destinationsegments and different countries, the UK andGerman markets playing a key role. Main driverof the growth in the contract furniture business isthe performance of the Retail, the Hospitality andthe Office segments, representing over 60 percentof contract furniture sales made by the Europeancompanies. Public spending is experiencing someimprovement, however the effects of the austerity

measures adopted are still evident and weigh onpublic facility construction and refurbishments. On the competitive system side, the markethas become increasingly concentrated over thelast five years and the top 20 firms’ share on theEuropean production is rising. One of the main opportunities for the Europeancompanies involved in the contract furniture bu-siness are the extra-European projects. Csil esti-mates that over 20 percent of local production isdestined for projects in the Middle East, Asia,America, Central-Eastern Europe, Russia andNorth Africa. The seventh edition of the Csil report,“The contract furniture and furnishings marketin Europe”, is an in-depth market analysis withinsights from industry experts. The report providesa comprehensive picture of the European contractfurniture market with demand determinants andmain projects by destination segment. It covers17 countries in Western Europe. BREAKDOWN FOR THE MAJOR SEGMENTS, 2017.

ON THE WAY TO DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

ACCENTURE

Industry 4.0 and everything that goes with it havean impact not only on the way a companyproduces or makes business, but on the entire"country system", as it changes mechanisms thathad been untouched for many years. This meansthat the introduction of the so-called enablingtechnologies – i.e. collaborative robotics, me-chatronics, “Big data” and “machine learning”,“cloud computing”, “cybersecurity”, and so on –has to be combined with a radical change ofpace, a situation that has been involving all theaspects of economy in the past few years. Havingsaid that, it is important to remember, on oneside, that 4.0 investments must necessarily berelated to your organization and financial capacity, and on the other, that once you have implementedthe enabling technologies, it's not enough pressinga button to start the new factor , launching atotally new way of producing and making business. It takes much more. First and foremost, you need to change attitude,so that the people in charge will take the rightsteps into the right direction, without "overdoing"and without making wrong investments that wouldturn up into a useless waste of money. So, somecompanies set out on the way to the future factoryon their own, while other rely on professional con-sultant, like Accenture, specializing in guidingbusinesses through their digital transformation. Most of you will know what Accenture is anddoes. It's a global organization with over 400thousand employees, including 14 thousandin Italy, providing services in areas such as “stra-tegy”, “consulting”, “digital”, “technology” and“operations”, to 75 percent of "Fortune 500” com-panies, i.e. the top-500 US companies by turnoveraccording to the ranking published annually byFortune magazine. Apart from Fortune 500, Ac-centure is a reference also in Italy and in our in-dustry. For this and other reasons, it was a greatopportunity to have some Accenture specialists– including Giancarlo Paccapeli, Giorgio Tor-resani, Francesco Talarico and Stefania Filip-pone – speaking at the Xylexpo Arena last Mayabout “Industria X.0” topics. And it was a greatopportunity also to talk about smart factories andwood industry with Davide Pugliesi, managingdirector of Accenture and woodworking industryspecialist together with Camilla Corfini, offeringsupport to all the organizations that produce ma-chinery, technology and solutions for woodworking.According to Accenture experts, providing con-sulting services to wood industry companiesshould not be limited to specific technologies:they need to be guided to the creation of an eco-system of solutions and then effectively supportedto make it available to all industry players, fromsmall cabinet makers to large furniture compa-

nies.“The common attitudeI have seen in Italiancompanies in the woodindustry (and not only)”,Pugliesi explained, “is toapproach this new ageof changes with isolatedinitiatives involving spe-

cific technologies, so with a logic mainly basedon specific contingencies. For instance, theyhave got a specific request from a customer orthey have been attracted by an interesting so-lution they have seen at an exhibition. In ourview, instead, what really makes the differenceis to start off with a real roadmap, an accuratedevelopment plan where you identify a targetin the first place, i.e. the functionality you wantto offer to the end customer, and then – as asecond step – you invest in innovative tech-nologies to achieve the goals you have set. Ofcourse, you will still start from an investment inone specific technology, but it is essential to

see the full picture very clearly”. “From ourpoint of view, the companies in this industryhave been impacted to a lesser extent by newtechnology trends, and now they are deploying'pilot projects' to try to develop new types ofproducts or services to offer to their customers. However, the virtuous circle should start fromthe introduction of an innovative technology todevelop a new product or service, and then re-consider your business model with an evolu-tionary approach”.

The so-called fourth industrial revolution starteda while ago, and according to Accenture experts,it's just a matter of time; what many companies inour industries still consider a natural investmentdecision to avoid "being left behind" or to diffe-rentiate from your competitors, sooner or later willbecome a "sine qua non" condition to survivein the market. “The sectors where this changehas already happened”, Pugliesi added, “aremainly in the B2C sphere, while B2B – wherewoodworking machinery and technology belong– still has margins. However, the direction is clearand woodworking companies have already startedto look for something different from the past. Be-sides machinery or technology itself, they needqualified service and consulting within short time-frames. What we offer to our customers is realsessions of what we call “design thinking” –namely user-centric processes for product conceptand development – that by their own natureinvolve also the customers of our customers, toidentify actual market requirements and create astructured development plan, to be used as aguideline to achieve the set goals”.

The Accenture experts also insist on another keyfactor. When you talk about Industry 4.0, the com-mon approach is to think first about a change oftechnology: you have to implement an IoT platform, tools for data analytics and so on. But, Puglisi ad-ded, "all these elements alone are not enough. You have to build skills, the necessary com-petence to invent new solutions to offer to themarket and also to explain them to their futureusers, to teach how to use them and to tellabout the possibilities they offer. Otherwise therisk is that companies are forced into makinginvestments without knowing the potential ofthe solutions they have purchased".

So, how can an organization like Accenture helpcompanies in the wood industry? “We offer com-plete consulting across the entire productrange”, Pugliesi replied, “doing our best totransfer the approach we believe in to the com-panies that rely on us. Initially, we try to identifythe position of the company in the market andwhat they are actually offering to customers interms of products. Then, we try to complement their offer, identifyingpossible services to expand it, without compro-mising on the product excellence that distin-guishes Italian companies. Finally, the third stepis to analyze and outline the skills that the com-pany and its staff need to modify the internalprocesses and provide customers exactly withwhat they need in this historical period. Whichmeans, as we have seen before, technologycombined with high-quality service".

EVENTS

SUSTAINABILITY UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT AT XYLEXPO ARENAA current and critical topic, sustainability in the wood-furniture industry was the key topic of an interesting series of meetings, organized at the recent edition of Xylexpo by Luca Rossetti –Acimall and Xylexpo press office manager, as well as “heart and soul” of this magazine – in collaboration with Franco Bulian and Paolo Gronchi, associate professor at the Giulio Nattamaterial chemistry and chemical engineering department of the Milan Polytechnic. The sessions involved four major topics, so we will publish an equivalent number of articles in this and thecoming Xylon issues, to review the most important factors illustrated by the speakers at the Xylexpo Arena last May. We will start from adhesives, raw materials that can have a strong impacton performance and visual qualities, a domain characterized by the increasing adoption of natural raw materials. We will then move on to lamination, an area where the use of leading-edgetechnology is allowing to achieve unprecedented results. We will also deal with coating and the latest developments in this field, as well as expected future steps resulting from continuousproduct and process evolution driven by research. And finally, more in general, we will talk about surfaces and how innovative materials and technology can contribute to create a newscenario, finding a perfect balance between elegance, regulations and performance.

1-ADHESIVES

Adhesive consumption in Europe amounts to 4.5million tons and a turnover of 14 billion euro. InItaly, 340 thousand tons are used with a turnoverclose to one billion euro; of these, 54 thousandtons (equivalent to 130 million euro approximately)are absorbed by the wood-furniture industry. These figures, proving the relevance of this busi-ness segment in Europe and in Italy, are providedby Franco Bulian, deputy director at Catas, who – at the meeting “Adhesives and bonding:raw materials from nature” held last 8 Mayduring the 26th edition of Xylexpo – underlinedthat this sector is characterized by a wide varietyof products. “The most used adhesives are urea, vinyl and hot-melting glues, plus many more”,he said. The current trends in this industry, ac-cording to Bulian, mainly involve three areas:sustainability, a major topic that requires greatattention; safety, not only for workers but also forend users; and standards, i.e. compliance withregulations (such as En304) and all the technicalspecifications applied to guarantee furnitureoffering better quality and no defects.“In the pastfew years – he continued – something has beenchanging for sustainability also in the adhesivebusiness. Think about raw materials of naturalorigin used in this field: adhesives based onvegetal flours, lignin, citric acid, animal proteins, natural rubber, casein, vegetal oils and so on.These products are being reformulated to im-prove them and make them compatible withthe new requirements of the industrial world".Talking about safety, Bulian reminded that, inJune 2018, the United States have enacted alaw stating that all panels, as well as finished pro-ducts containing wood-based panels, must beprovided with Epa TSCA Title VI certification, which sets specific formaldehyde emission limitsfor manufacturers, importers and distributors, na-mely 0.05 parts per million for plywood; 0.09ppm for particleboard; 0.11 ppm for Mdf panelsand 0.13 ppm for thin Mdf (up to 8 millimeters).

WHICH BONDING IS SUSTAINABLE?The question was raised by Paolo Gronchi, as-sociate professor of the ‘Giulio Natta’ materialchemistry and chemical engineering departmentat the Milan Polytechnic, who tried to give ananswer to a practical question, explaining that inrecent times the sustainability concept has takenthe lead over other concepts such as "natural"and “biological”. “It represents a more pragmaticvision – Gronchi said –, more modern, statingthat, on one side, there is no developmentwithout process and product performance im-provements achieved also through the use ofoil-based materials. And, on the other side, products and processes can still be compatibleand safer for people and the environment, evenif you don't use, either partially or entirely, ma-terials of natural origin".In his speech, professor Gronchi observed that, after a few research centers discovered of newbio-based polymer materials with good bondingperformance, business interest has increased si-gnificantly, supporting further application studiesaimed at the discovery of innovative mixed adhe-sives, i.e. made of biological and synthetic com-pounds. And also: another driver for researchwere the regulations to eliminate potentially ha-zardous adhesives releasing formaldehyde emis-sions.

THE VOICE OF COMPANIESThe symposium about wood-furniture industryadhesives brought three speakers from the industryon the stage of the Xylexpo Arena. Katia Trovenzi– R&D manager of the prefab house manufacturerMarlegno – focused on the new concept of buil-ding, namely a construction designed to offersafety and security, improved living quality, andenvironmental friendliness. This new concept, forthose involved in constructions, requires a greaterattention to the use of eco-sustainable constructionsystems.According to Gianluca Brocchieri of the R&Ddepartment at plywood manufacturer Panguaneta, sustainable bonding is possible. “We considerthis a viable approach”, he said. “It's long waywith a few hills, but we really believe we willreach the final destination one day. However, itmust be clear that sustainable bonding muststart from strong industrial sustainability, as wellas an environmental-friendly finished product".Finally, another interesting speech was given byAndrea Comparini, R&D Analist at Agroils, which in the past few years has also expandedinto the production of industrial products such asformaldehyde-free wood adhesives made fromJatropha. The latter is a non-food plant fromCentral America that can produce huge quantitiesof seeds with high oil content, an ideal rawmaterial also for the production of gluing resinsfor plywood, particleboard and Mdf. Using resinsfrom Jatropha, panel manufacturers can switchto a formaldehyde-free production process withoutchanging their instrumentation and machinery.

ADHESIVES AND SUSTAINABILITY: NEWS AND TRENDS IN AN EVOLVING MARKET

2-LAMINATION

THE NEW FRONTIERS

OF LAMINATIONWood absorbs almost all wavelengths of the elec-tromagnetic spectrum of sunlight, therefore it issubject to photocatalytic, photo-oxidizing andthermal oxidizing reactions, notes Paolo Gronchi, associate professor at the “Giulio Natta” materialchemistry and chemical engineering departmentof the Milan Polytechnic. This means that lami-nation or veneering is not just related to visualqualities, but also has a functional role. Laminationwas the topic discussed last May 9 in the XylexpoArena at Fiera Milano Rho, the second stage of aprofessional education track about sustainabledevelopment. The deputy director of Catas, Franco Bulian, guided us into the topic of the day, starting withan introduction about two segments that arestrictly related to lamination. “The global furnituremarket in 2017, at production prices, amountedto approximately 400 billion euro, achievinggrowth compared to 2016 and offering furtherexpansion estimates by 3.5 percent in 2018”,he said. “Another interesting figure comes fromthe wood-based panel market, which is thebackbone of the furniture industry. Also the pro-duction of these semifinished materials is record-ing constant growth, and in 2016 it has almostreached 420 million cubic meters". Based on Franco Bulian's estimates, it is quiteclear that there are plenty of panels to be laminated,so the lamination market is experiencing avery positive trend. However, this is also aperiod when topics like sustainability and safetyplay a central role, resulting into strict regulationsand standards.

WHICH ARE THE KEY TRENDS ON THE MARKET?For sure, the need for very fast processingoperations leveraging efficient technology. Weare going towards lean and fast production, fea-turing very high automation levels. “In Italy thereis a real culture of know-how”, Bulian observed.“I see strong attention to new technologies, aswell as great flexibility to change. This meansthat a machine featuring leading-edge technologyoffered to an Italian company results into theopportunity to make high-end products withminimum waste". However, it is true that, if te-chnology plays a key role, sustainability is just asimportant, as it ensures the elimination of non-su-stainable materials, for instance. Just considerthat, in the field of polymer coatings, there are se-vere limitations for materials like Pvc, which isneither forbidden by law nor hazardous, but itpresents critical aspects mainly associated to its

lifecycle. “If polyvinyl chloride is burnt at lowtemperature in the final stage of its lifecycle” ,Bulian added, “it releases dioxins, so manycompanies will not use it for this reason”.So, elimination of non-sustainable materials, andalso – talking about sustainability – limitationsfor the content of hazardous substances andthe emission of volatile organic compounds(such as heavy metals, solvents or plasticizers).Besides formaldehyde, a topic we have discussedseveral times in this magazine, for a few yearsnow attention has been focused on emissions re-leased from other substances. To help us under-stand, Franco Bulian mentioned the classical'new item scent' we all know very well. When youbuy new furniture, its smell is probably not un-pleasant, but it is associated to the use of solvents, plasticizers, monomers and so on.And finally, market trends are going towards thesearch for high performance in terms of resistanceto heat, light, stains and scratches.

THE VOICE OF COMPANIESThree guests at the meeting “The new routes oflamination”, presented valuable stories to the au-dience based on their field experience.Giorgio Agnoletti, senior product manager atAlpi, talked about design, innovation and sustai-nability, explaining that the “Alpilignum” veneer– obtained with a special production processwhere wood is "peeled", tinted by immersion and"recomposed" by overlapping several tinted sheets– and the “Alpikord” cut veneer, a high-pressuremultilayer sheet applied on a phenolic substrate(“Alpilignum Preverniciato”), offer the best com-bination of quality, design and eco-responsibleorigin.An interesting speech was also given byFrancesca Montefusco, “Fenix” product managerat Arpa Laminati, presenting a new generationof innovative and nanotechnological materialsdeveloped for typical vertical and horizontal ap-plications in interior design. Introduced in themarket in 2013 under the name “Fenix Ntm”(NanoTech Matt material), these materials weredeveloped by an international multidisciplinaryteam of 15 researchers using proprietary techno-logy. The external face of “Fenix” is producedusing nanotechnology and characterized by asurface treated with next-generation acrylic resins, hardened and fixed through a process called“Electron Beam Curing”. With low light reflectivity, the surface looks very opaque, pleasant to touchand resistant to fingerprints. Luca Ballarin, owner of Leansor, finally introduced“B.stucco”, a line of panels made by Breda Pan-nelli, featuring microcement finishing and selectedby architects and designers for their high perfor-mance. These panels are strong, water-repellent,hygienic, eco-compatible, resistant to scratchingand staining, and beautiful. They are used for fur-nishing elements, hotel and store installations, and all applications where exclusive visual qualitiesare required. Microcement plaster is a one-com-ponent pre-mixed powder consisting of specialcement, resins, additives and selected quartzinert materials: just adding water, you get acreamy paste, easy to spread, offering high bon-ding power and flexibility. With this material, thefinishing layer grips tightly to the Mdf/Hpl sub-strate.

MEDEX IRAN CANCELLEDMedex in Iran will be cancelled this year. The in-ternational trade fair for woodworking and wood pro-cessing, materials, accessories, furniture and laminateflooring was scheduled to be held at the PermanentFair Ground in Tehran, 10 to 13 July 2018. However,in the past couple of weeks, unexpected changes re-sulting from the current political conditions in Iranhave materialized, and the Iran Furniture Manufacturers& Exporters Association, Deutsche Messe AG andthe exhibitors have jointly decided to cancel the fairin 2018. Organizers maintain Iran continues to be animportant market. The situation will be monitored andre-evaluated for 2019.

From August 29 to September 1, the capital ofCarinthia will host a new edition of InternationaleHolzmesse, a reference event for the entire worldof primary wood operations. The event boasts re-cord figures: over 500 exhibitors from 22 countrieson a total exhibition area exceeding 30 thousandsquare meters. These figures measure the valueof this historical event, a meeting of all the industrialsegments revolving around forest, forestry, sawmilland primary processing, showcasing all types ofsolutions: from forest technology to sawmill equip-ment, from bioenergy to logistics, from wood con-structions to joinery and carpentry equipment. An exhaustive review including a rich outdoorarea featuring amazing eye-catching machinesfor forest operations. The event has a new time-frame, switching from the traditional Thursday-

Sunday to a new more business-oriented schedulefrom Wednesday to Saturday. This year there will also be an "exhibition insidethe exhibition" dedicated to wood constructions, namely the fourth edition of “Holz&Bau"; it willcover approximately ten thousand meters, bringingnew energy to the event that adds a new andmuch requested exhibition topic.Internationale Holzmesse – this year at the 56thedition – wants to play its part, attracting some22 thousand visitors, one third from abroad, 7.5percent from Italy. Italy is a major partner for theAustrian wood industry: it is the biggest customerby volumes of raw material provisioning, a historical"dependence" – so to say – celebrated in thepast decades with meetings and in-depth di-scussions that wind up in Klagenfurt, with the

“Wood Day” scheduled on the third day, August31. “It's a very important day, as it regulates the re-lations between the two countries which sharea huge interest for wood resources”, said BernardErler, general manager of the exhibition. “We ex-pect 400 operators who will not only discussabout market situation, supply and demand, but also lay the foundations for interaction andconfrontation during the subsequent days”.“It will be a qualifying event for our reviews – headded – just like the new “Innovation Area” wehave decided to create in hall 1, a space dedi-cated to leading-edge technology and best

practices, to the tools and instruments introducedby the recent digitalization process...”.

Several live presentations will show how ancientwoodworking and forestry jobs have changed: ashowcase of the most innovative ideas, a reviewof the most creative solutions. The exhibition willcover several topics, from forestry (which remainsthe core of the event) to safety, from effective andsmart means of transportation to movable sawmills, with a specific focus on bioenergy and environ-ment.A final mention about the collaboration, startedlast year, with the exhibition company Fuji Sankeifor the "Forestrise" exhibition in Nagano: the Ja-panese will bring to Carinthia a selection of com-panies and a delegation of industry operatorswilling to discover the latest trends in forestry andsawmills. FOCUS United States of America

IWF 2018, AN EVENT WITH MUCH LIGHT AND SOME SHADOW

At the end of August (22-25), the Iwf exhibitionwill come back at the World Congress Center inAtlanta. The event is dedicated to wood technologymanufacturers and furniture industry supplies. Itcomes in a very positive period for macro-economic conditions, including the wood industry, however there are some elements that call for at-tention to near-term developments, such as theintroduction of trade tariffs and international politicaltension. The Us are the world's biggest market, but the balance is always critical. We want to pro-vide our readers with some information about thetrend of key economic indicators, a few industryfigures and some information on the upcomingevent in Georgia.

MACROECONOMIC SCENARIOAs mentioned, the Us are the world's biggesteconomy and, for the year 2018, the InternationalMonetary Fund is estimating 2.9 percent Gdpgrowth, quite a high rate for a mature country.Just think that Germany should reach 2.5 percent, while Italy will not go beyond one and a halfpoints. In absolute value, the product generatedby the American giant exceeds 20,000 billion

dollar, which is ten times bigger than Italy. In theUs, the investment share is 20 percent of Gdp,while inflation in 2018 amounted to 2.5 percent:both values indicate that the current growth isstructural. Unemployment, a more tangible and less statisticindicator, remains very low at 4 percent, identicalto Germany and, unfortunately, much lower thanItaly, that will close 2018 at 10.9 percent. Amongthe peculiarities of Us economy, we cannot forgetthe negative result of the trade balance, equal to615 billion dollar in 2018; so, the Us are aproducing and exporting country, but also a bigimporter.

THE WOODWORKING INDUSTRYItaly exports a lot to the United States; for a fewyears now, the Us have been the top destinationfor Italian machinery sales, plus local productionthat cannot be measured with the sources wehave access to. In 2017, Italian companies shippedtechnological products for a total value of 165million euro. This is an interesting figure that indicates theconstant expansion of the market, although lastyear the rate has slightly decreased. Sure, all thatglitters is not gold, everyone knows how hard it isfor a market newcomer to set up an internationa-lization process. It's difficult to find resellers, youhave to set up an efficient after-sales service, and each state of the Union has different tax andlegal systems… these are just a few barriers thatdiscourage some companies, especially smallones. Then you also have to consider another factor:our key competitors export more, much more, tothe United States. China and Germany take the

top-two positions with 368 and 352 million re-spectively, while Taiwan gets "satisfied" with 250million euro export.

IWFIwf offers transparent information about its exhibitionfigures like few other trade fairs in the world. It israre, not to say unique, to find a post-show reportthat includes detailed visitor information, includingtheir origin and business activity. With these do-cuments you can draw a detailed picture of whatIwf is and what it offers to potential exhibitors. The latest edition in 2016 hosted 17,125 visitors;we remind you that this is the actual number ofpeople who visited the exhibition, and not thenumber of accesses. This approach is currentlyadopted by very few exhibitions, including Xylexpoin Milan. Looking at visitor profiles, the biggestcategory is kitchen and bathroom furnituremanufacturers, with a 24 percent share on totalattendance. The second largest category is dis-tributors, with almost 1,500 visitors, just aheadof companies that make custom operations forthe residential market. Significant figures werealso achieved by architects and home furnituremanufacturers in general. Summing up, we cansay that the exhibition is strongly focused on se-condary processing. Moving on, buyers wereanalyzed by company size according to twocriteria: number of employees and annual turnover. As to the first parameter, it is worth noticing thatthe most represented category is micro companiesfrom 1 to 9 employees, with 5,361 buyers and31.3 percent share on total attendance at Iwf2016. The second biggest category is large com-panies above 250 employees, with close to 2,300buyers. This unusual distribution with two oppositetypes of organizations representing most atten-dance, is also reflected to a lower extent inturnover: 14.7 percent of buyers generate lessthan 250,000 dollar revenues annually, while 16percent lie between 10 and 50 million dollar. Inthis case, an intermediate subcategory (1-5 million)holds a significant 19 percent share. These figuresindicate that the exhibition has a mixed audience:the solutions displayed at Iwf attract everyonefrom small craftsmen to large furniture factories. The core of the analysis and probably the mostinteresting information for industry operators isvisitor origin. In a landscape where the proliferation

of local events offers plenty of opportunities, it isdifficult to organize an exhibition that is really in-ternational. Finding the right tools to make operatorstravel to visit a remote location is not easy.Iwf data confirm a feeling that is shared by virtuallyall global events: in 2016, 89.3 percent of visitorswere from the US, and most of them came fromGeorgia, Florida and North Carolina. As to international visitors, almost 40 percentcame from nearby Canada, while South Americaaccounted for only 20 percent of visitors.Among European countries, the top country oforigin was Germany with 61 buyers, while inAsia the top country was China with 69 visitors. The analysis of these data reveals the peculiarityof this exhibition: mature international shows lookfor high-quality visitors. An operator visits thehalls to see the latest trends, update his knowledge, and you cannot expect a crowd of curious people.Exhibitors are starting to appreciate this approachthat will increasingly characterize future exhibitions. So, these figures are food for thought, and speci-fically, they urge us to think about the way visitorinformation is communicated by international exhi-bitions. More transparency and accuracy mightbe useful for all industry operators and they mightoffer valuable information to exhibitors who haveto choose where to invest. Unfortunately, that's not always true, some infor-mation we get from official trade fair channelsseem really far from reality, so congratulations toIwf for giving an accurate picture of what we aregoing to see in few weeks in the Georgia WorldCongress Center halls.

CONCLUSIONWe have given an overview of many conceptsthat cannot describe the Us market exhaustively;for each member State, it would be worth pre-senting a specific economic, fiscal and legal ana-lysis, but this is clearly not the right place. Ourpurpose was to show you the huge potential ofthis region, which cannot be approach as onenation, as it is more similar to a real continent. A company approaching the Us should rememberthat they are approaching a region as big as Eu-rope, requiring equivalent investment and planningefforts.

AN UPDATE ON THE AMERICAN MARKET

United States of America

interviews

Between sharp increases and abrupt slow-downs, the Us economy is still the world'sbiggest. Its companies are highly competitiveand ready to pay the right price for a qualityproduct. That's why the players with Us op-erations we have interviewed agree that ex-pertise pays. However, it is essential to guar-antee excellent after-sales service in termsof speed and reliability.

Alberto Sala, Italpresse: “Expanding sales inthe recent period are also a consequence oftariffs, real or threatened by Donald Trump,on import from China”.

Italpresse has been operatingin the US market since the Se-venties, initially through resellers, and since 2001 with subsidiaryin Florida. “The US markethas always been characterizedby sharp increases and abruptslowdowns. However, in the

past four to five years, it has been experiencingstrong growth in terms of absolute value andshare on our sales", says Alberto Sala, exportmanager of the company. “The key factor is the trend of Us economy, whose companies have overcome the 2009crisis faster than their Italian counterparts, achieving significant growth rates. Sales increasein the latest period has been driven by sanctions, real or threatened by Donald Trump, on importfrom the People's Republic of China. Thetype of technology we sell, namely solutions forpanel lamination, has been growing so fast be-cause several furniture manufacturers in the Uspurchased materials from China (including ply-wood, particleboard and veneered panels) andthey were forced to review their cost structures, ultimately deciding to bring back in house theproduction of semifinished materials to avoidextra taxes due to import from China”. As known, competition is an issue that characterizesvirtually all markets, but Italpresse has alwayshad and still has the benefit of operating in aniche market. “Not all companies in the woodbusiness need pressing plants, so we can keephigh specialization standards, and consequentlytechnical expertise pays. On the contrary, it isoften more difficult for us to get in touch with Uscustomers, especially with big companies. How-ever, once you have opened the door andstarted a partnership, these organization becomeloyal. We have several customers with tens ofour plants installed in their factories".Why is the Us market searching for Italian te-chnology? “Unlike many European countries orformer Soviet Union nations, American compa-nies have no preconceived preference for Ger-man technology rather than Italian. This hasenabled us over the years to prove that we candeliver a product that meets their expectations".

Gianni Mussio, Metal World: “Us companiesadopt Italian technology for the solid know-how and added value we can deliver”.

For Metal World, thedrive to expand intooverseas marketssuch as the UnitedStates has beencombined with anoverall businessgrowth that in the

past four years has brought very interesting re-sults.“Metal World has launched a three-year plan toachieve an estimated 8 percent turnover in-crease. We believe the potential of this marketis even more interesting”, said Gianni Mussio, sales manager of the woodworking tool manu-facturer Metal World. “The expansion into extra-European marketslike North America, promoted by our presidentFranco Paviotti, is characterized by strongpropensity to competitive products. At the sametime, working with Us organizations has helpedus understand that product performance playsa key role, more than the cost of each item".This is definitely an interesting factor, which hasallowed Metal World to beat most competitorsfrom the Far East, thanks to the quality of itsportfolio. Nevertheless, Gianni Mussio points out that ex-pansion into the Us market is an intercontinentalchallenge. “Besides investing in new technol-ogy, this has also led us to review part of ourinternal production processes, increasing thenumber of working shifts and improving the au-tomation of our workshop, in order to expandthe production of our technological solutions".According to Gianni Mussio of Metal World, Uscompanies adopt Italian technology for thesolid know-how and added value it can deliver.“The R&D department at Metal World closelycollaborates with several European universitiesto study and manufacture tools that meet therequirements of Industry 4.0. Furthermore, thepassion and dedication you can see in all de-partments support a smooth and dynamic cir-culation of information. What Metal World hasachieved in its story is the result of strong pas-sion for this job shared by all the people whowork in our company”.What about the products you export to this market?“Besides a wide range of standard nestingtools, we are promoting a finishing milling cutterwith interchangeable inserts, that will compensatethe lack of local after-sales service with aproduct made of replaceable components".

www.metalworld.it

Marco Vucetich, Pade: “Us companies areready to pay a full price for high-quality tech-nology and reliable after-sales service”.

“Four years ago we opened a subsidiary inNorth Carolina, Pade Usa, including a salesand a service department”. So said MarcoVucetich who is in charge for the Us market atPade, a manufacturer of machining centers.

“If you want to sell on the Us market, it isessential to offer highly qualified after-salesservice and respond to customers in real time. Our decision was to employ Us staff exclusively. We believe you cannot underestimate the im-portance of customer approach: what is ac-ceptable for European might be unacceptableacross the Ocean. So we have made a massive investment to de-velop local resources and skills, and this is acontinuous process. Pade Usa now has excellent technical staff formechanical, electrical/electronic engineeringand programming”.

To guarantee quick and effective customer service, over the years Pade has created a big spareparts warehouse in its North Carolina site.

“Us companies prefer Italian technology be-cause, in our market segment, Us-made equip-ment still cannot compare with our technologicalstandards. I am not saying that there are no ex-cellent machine tools manufacturers in America, but so far they cannot offer a real 'solution',which is what we do".

Do you have expansion plans on this market?“Sure”, Marco Vucetich replies. “We are working to cover the entire territory, sowe are mainly committed to expanding oursales network in every State. We are pursuingthis expansion with a clear method, selectingdealers with significant technical skills as weoperate in a business where product customiza-tion is often essential”.

Wintersteiger Sägen GmbH, a subsidiary ofthe Wintersteiger group, is growing: Three millioneuros have been invested in buildings andequipment to enlarge the production plant inArnstadt, Thüringen by 2,000 m2. The new faci-lities were formally opened on June 15.The increased capacity that has become possibleas a result of the construction work will pave theway for growth at the saw factory. Along withexpanding the machine park, processes in bothsaw production and support services are beingoptimized. The result for customers is that leadtimes are being reduced. Covering a total areaof 6,800 m², the newly enlarged productionfacility can now produce more than 20,000meters of saw blades per day.

With its 60 employees, the Arnstadt site ma-nufactures blades for Wintersteiger thin-cuttingsawing machines, for joineries and mobile sawmills, resawing band and log band saws, aswell as for the food industry. 85 percent of thefactory’s blades are exported to over 50 countries– from Europe and the Middle East to Russia,Asia, and the Usa.

Matthias Hengelhaupt, Ceo of WintersteigerSägen GmbH, emphasizes the need for the hi-ghest level of quality: “Our focus is on producingpremium-quality saws and we want to addmore value to our products” Turning to the ex-pansion of the site, he continued:

“Our goal is to be the market leader in manyof our various product groups.

There is still 4,000 square meters of landthat could also be developed on our prem-ises, so there’s nothing holding us back onthat front“.

Saw manufacturing has been part of the Win-tersteiger group since 2004. The relationship began in the eighties underthe company’s earlier guise of BanholzerGmbH, who produced saw blades for Winter-steiger frame saw machines. The ability to offer both machine and sawingtool from a single source is still a uniqueselling point and has enormous quality benefitsfor the customers. ■

GIARDINAGIARDINAGROUP IN THE US

"The North American market, and the US inparticular, have always appreciated the finishingsolutions by the companies that are nowadaysunited in Giardina Group: we can say that thereis no" big name" among the furniture or semi-finished product manufacturers that have notchosen or will not choose our technologies”. Stefano Tibé, sales director of the group, is con-fident when he tells about the relationship betweenthe Italian group and the investors of this part ofthe world. "We have always worked very wellwith high-level customers, our target for excel-lence. I could mention what I believe is thelargest and most important manufacturer ofoffice furniture in the United States - a productionin which the quality and performance of thefinish is essential – and they chose us overtwenty years ago. Their installation is still fullyoperational, and in recent times they have de-cided to install another finishing line by GiardinaGroup". The Italian group has sixty employees, a turnoverof around 20 million euros and a very high incli-nation to export - close to 95 percent of production- and a large manufacturing facility in Figino Se-renza, in the Como area. Giardinagroup will be atthe next IWF show in Atlanta, with a story of deve-lopment and continuity. A story made of greatquality, attention to customer needs and under-

standing of the most complex technical issues.Solutions supported by a sort of "branch" basedin Louisville. In fact Giardina Finishing could countsince the mid-Nineties on a direct presence inNorth America, branch that in the followingdecades was then acquired by its employeesand today - without any disruption of continuity -is in fact still the " heart "of the deep relationshipwith the United States. "The fact of having alwaysguaranteed, for more than twenty years, a directpresence, a capable and fast technical assis-tance has allowed us to bring the relationshipwith our customers on another level, guaranteeingus the role of leader in the large systems for themost important customers, as I have alreadymentioned", adds Mr. Tibè. The Giardina Group team (building B, Booth4867) will present the "Dualtech 501" spray ma-chine, the "Gp-Jet-6" hot air oven and the "Gst1501-2-3D-R" Uv oven. During the show, demon-strative tests of the various processes will becarried out, in cooperation with some of the mostimportant paint manufacturers on the Americanmarket. "We will have the opportunity to confirmour role in a market where spray finishing androller coating systems have always been pre-ferred, in addition to the vacuum or spray solu-tions for moldings,, a demand which our groupcan meet with its large experience", concludesStefano Tibé.

CASADEI BUSELLATOIMPORTANT INNOVATIONS AT IWF 2018

Casadei Busellato – created on 2008 from themerger of two historical companies in the field ofwood working production machines leader in theproduction of wood working machines – will bepresent at the Iwf Fair 2018 with an even widerrange of technology able to satisfy any type ofproduction requirements, from the craftsman tothe big industry, from small carpentry shops tolarge industrial furniture makers. At the Atlantaexhibition, the Italian company will present highlevel solutions that include classic and specialmachines and Cnc working centers. A completeoffer for a global market with in constant evolutionand growing demanding. Casadei Busellato hasenriched and increased its range of edge bandingmachines with the new automatic machines “Flexa507” and “Flexa 607”, top of the range for this te-chnology with a lot of options available for anyedging requirements. “Flexa 507” is the automaticedge banding machine with touch screen controlunit, which is characterized by extreme versatilityof composition, possibility to be equipped withcontrolled axis on the “Xe” version and the highfeed speed, variable according to the differentedging requirements, up to 18 m/min with panelthickness of 60 millimetres. The “Flexa 507” canalso work with solid wood edges with thicknessup to 12 millimetres. “Flexa 607” is the top levelmachine for the big industry thanks to its varioushighly competitive features. Equipped with touchscreen control unit, this machine is able to workeven delicate panels with excellent results thanksto the belt pressure unit. An extremely precise

machine with a speed up to 22 meters/minute forpanels thickness of 60 millimetres, “Flexa 607”allows optimal processing with the innovative andthe reverse rotation of the glue spreading rollerfrom the control panel. The automatic edgebanding machines “Flexa” can reach high pro-duction levels, like “just in time” productions, thanks to the possibility to interconnect an edgebanding machine “Flexa”, an automatic Casadeipanel sizing saw and a Busellato working center. Fully automated, with one of the highest productivityon the market and with a perfect tone-on-tone fi-nishing capacity. These are the main advantagesof the edge banding machine “Flexa 47Xe”, themachine with controlled axis that allows to com-pletely automate the set-up process and increasethe productivity by cutting down the setting timesof the units according to the required processing. One of the main “advantage” is the processingsystem with hot air “Air Jet Package” that assuresa high level finishing, especially on edges withthe same color of the panel. “Flexa 27” is the au-tomatic edge banding machine that can be equip-ped with touch screen control unit. This machineallows a perfect gluing thanks to the unit "Gp200" and the anti adhesive unit "Ra" that, placedbefore the pre-milling unit, avoids deposit of glueon upper and lower panel surface and assures aperfect cleaning. Another “advantage” is the pre-milling unit "Tr/K1" equipped with two cutters withautomatic timed intervention to avoid damagingof the panel. The finishing action can be furtheroptimized by the addition of the brushing unit"Bfk" with two independent tilting motors to facilitateedge cleaning.

XYLEXPO

RECORD ORDERS FOR BIESSE. AND “SOPHIA” FINDS NEW SUPPORTERS

Xylexpo went well, very well. “Sophia”, the newservice platform of Biesse Group, attracted manyoperators also at this event. So we decided to goand see how it works in the real world, at RigoniArredamenti in Dimaro Folgarida. All around,an enchanted landscape: Madonna di Campiglio, the Tonale pass and many more wonderful locationof the Italian Alps. Here, wood is at home, andFalegnameria Arredamenti Bigoni, near Trento,

has been in business for fifty years. Handicraftfurniture, great care for details, increasing attentionto design and the "type" of furniture requested byhigh-end buyers: these are the factors that haveled the founder, Natale Bigoni, and then his sonNicola to move from traditional mountain-stylefurniture to creations published in glossy magazi-nes. “Fifty years in the furniture business, sincemy father, a capable cabinet make, producedgreat furniture. He came here from his nativetown Treviglio, near Bergamo, to run a factoryof a renowned brand of high-end style furniture. He has been here ever since, starting his ownbusiness to exploit the massive developmentof tourism in these valleys, with many peopleattracted by the great beauty who decided tobuy a house and furnish it with a wood flavor. That was the origin of our business – NicolaBigoni adds – and it's still going on today”.Bigoni makes everything: in a 2,500-square-meterlaboratory, approximately 15 people create furniture,as well as full sets with all you need, "turnkey"apartments with walls, flooring, doors and windows.“We have adopted a “modern mountain style”,that's how we call it: linear furniture, comfortableand charming, letting you breathe the atmos-phere of our mountains inside your home. Ar-chitects, representing a significant portion ofour orders, come to us, show their conceptsand we do everything, if they want, coordinatingall operations to realize their project, includingbricklayers and electricians. We also work forthe hotel business, where we only make suiterooms or common areas, and we are real spe-cialists in full-featured renovation projects”. Approximately a dozen "turnkey" projects annually,

plus other orders. The reference market encom-passes the valleys around Dimaro Folgarida, al-though often a customer happy with his mountainhouse relies on the Bigoni's also for their city flat, and solid wood is king: “We use 99 percent wood, also for veneered panels we choose blockboard, not particleboard or Mdf. We made this choicein 2000, because some materials do not belongto our tradition, and we want to distinguish our-selves from competitors we do not want to fightwith. We offer quality products for customerswho know well what they want at home: it's aradical choice, resulting into a different organi-zation of production. Back in those years, we re-alized we needed to have a more modern ap-proach, developing our projects with Cad software, storing them in servers, manufacturing furniturewith more advanced technology than conventionalmachines. This approach has supported ourgrowth: today our revenues are close to onemillion euro, and all jobs go through the "Rover",Bigoni says, indicating the Biesse machiningcenter they have invested in.

“We purchased the first cnc machine in 2002.Six months ago we decided to replace it with asolution that would allow us to use our designsoftware, while integrating it with more effectivemachine control systems. In the end we chosethe “Rover A Smart 1632” center by Biesse:we design in the office and the machine receivesworking instructions with no intermediate step.Of course, we have some accessory equipment, but the core of our system is the machiningcenter, handling all our furniture production".

Mr Bigoni, isn't it strange for a small joiner, in apeculiar territory with longstanding woodworkingtraditions, to make such a radical choice?“No, there is no other chance today: if you wantto be competitive in price and able to makeeven the most "peculiar" projects, advancedtechnology is essential! We have spent thirtyyears drawing shapes on plywood boards, knees on the floor: you don't work like that anylonger! We are still craftsmen, but we havechanged attitude, we use more advanced toolsto make more and better than before. And letme say that with “Sophia” we have madeanother step forward: I admit that, when Biessesuggested to adopt this system, I was doubtful, because I could not really grasp its scope. In-stead, the experience was very positive, as wecan focus on our work, the things we have tomake on our "Rover", knowing that in case ofproblems or situations that need checking, wewill get a notification directly from Pesaro, via asatellite link between them and our machine. We do not even notice when our center is re-ceiving signals or application patches to operatebetter and better: we have exchanged a fewless than 600 of such signals and instructionsin few weeks, without even knowing! I'll makeanother example: a few days ago, power supplywent off and the machine stopped in the middleof a job. When power was restored, we tried torestart, but we did not manage. So, through"Sophia", we asked the engineers in Pesaro totake action and we went out for lunch. Whenwe came back, the machine had almost finishedits job! This means you can work with full confi-dence: we often load into the machining centerhuge wood parts that will be processed for tenhours straight…".

Well, from the inlaid furniture of your father, that'slight years away…“Those who did not realize that that world hadchanged were left behind…These systems areessential for modern working operations: thedoog old workshop no longer exists and with“Sophia” it's like having a worker with incredibleskills. It's very reliable, I repeat, because we

know that someone is monitoring even the tiniestpart of our investment, and it's virtually impossibleto find yourself with two burnt power spindleslike it happened in the past! This means mini-mizing downtime, which is the real cost of tech-nical failure…Nothing we make is standard, each piece is made to measure. If a customerasks for something we cannot make, he willnever come back to us and we lose an oppor-tunity; on the contrary, I can tell you about acustomer who visited us, saw how we work andaccepted our offer although it was much moreexpensive than others. We want to transferemotions to our customers, involve them in ourwork, in the beauty of the material we process. And we have to look ahead, because the futurelies in these technologies, as I always say tomy son David, who is now eighteen and willguide Falegnameria Arredamenti Bigoni tomor-row…".

BIESSE AT XYLEXPO

Biesse confirms its leadership position onthe international market at Xylexpo 2018. Arecord 21.6 million euro in orders is evidenceof the constant growth already anticipatedby the results of the 2018 quarterly, whichshowed a +18.2 percent increase in incomingorders for the wood division compared tothe previous year. The orders portfolio of theGroup has also increased by 24 percent, reaching a value of 234 million euro, thehighest in the history of the group. The 3,000square meter Biesse stand at Xylexpo 2018received visitors from all over the world, which underscores the event's internationalnature, European countries prevailed withsome people from across the ocean beingdrawn by the great innovation that charac-terizes the company. Meanwhile, Italy con-tinues to see the fair as a key reference pointfor discovering what the market has to offer.Biesse noted a significant Italian presenceat the stand, more than in the past, accountingfor 38 percent of the total for incoming orders, evidence of the intense responsiveness ofthe Italian market. “We are very proud of theseresults, which confirm Biesse's leadership ininnovation and technology and are a testamentto the fact that our customers, regardless oftheir size, want to move toward a more evolvedand efficient approach to work and productivitywith support from Biesse”, stated FedericoBroccoli, Director of the Wood/Sales Division& Director of the Branches Division. Biesse'sinvestment in Xylexpo with a stand thatfocuses on automation and on the digitalisationof the factory has proven to be the rightstrategic decision. Companies of every sortshowed great interest in the four automatedsolutions present on the stand, solutions ca-pable of increasing efficiency and continuityin production, simplifying daily tasks. Alongthe same lines, the implementation of the“Sophia” service platform, presented at Xyl-expo as a solution for the digitalized factory, caught the attention of the many journalistsat the stand.

XYLEXPO

Xylexpo was a very successful event for theWeinig Group. With a generally rather restrainedvisitor response in Milan, the market leader inmachines and systems for solid wood and panelprocessing benefited from a high proportion ofdecision-makers and a high willingness to investat its stand. On an area of more than 1,000square meters, the Weinig Group presented atotal of 25 exhibits, all of which were presentedlive. Potential customers from over 60 countrieswere welcomed over the five days of the fair.Klaus Müller, Head of Marketing Communicationsand responsible for trade fairs at Weinig, was sa-tisfied: “The atmosphere was very positive. Wehave scored particularly well as a full-serviceprovider for the entire value chain and under-pinned our leading international posi-tion withour two strong brands Weinig and Holz-Her.”

The focus of the trade fair presentation was themega topic of digitization. The “Weinig App Suite”, the “digital windowto the machine inventory”, met with greatinterest. With the extended functionality, the currentversion of the app offers even more practicalvalue. In the “Virtual Reality Corner” visitors to thestand had the opportunity to look inside a high-performance window production line using 3Dglasses. Cutting-edge technology, integrated pro-duction as part of the “Weinig Solid Work Flow”and the trend-setting standard “Weinig W4.0”digital merged into a fascinating future scenarioat the presentation. At the end of the trade fair, the company mana-gement gave a very positive summary of theevent: “The Weinig Group returns from Milanwith a convincing result. Compared to 2016,we more than doubled order inflow in the Group”,said Chief Sales and Marketing Officer GregorBaumbusch. Overall, 44 machines and systemswere sold. After the excellent result at the Holz-Handwerk in Nuremberg, Weinig impressivelycontin-ued its series of extremely successful tradefair appearances this year.

NEW BUSINESS AUTOMATION & DIGITAL BUSINESSWeinig continues to press ahead with digitization. In a new step, the market leader in machines andsystems for solid wood and panel processinghas created the structures for maximum efficiency

in dealing with the chal-lenges ahead. The resultis the new business unit “Automation & DigitalBusiness”. Ceo Wolfgang Pöschl: “With this de-cision, we are strategically and organizationallyaligning our company to the future, which willbe characterized by a greater significance ofproject business and digitization”.

Consequently, the new company unit will be po-sitioned in Weinig Concept GmbH & Co Kg.,which bundles Weinig’s engineering activities.Jochen Ganz, who is currently head of theproduct unit Service, was appointed managingdirector of the new business unit. As part of Concept, he will act as the secondhead alongside Otto Leible, who will continue tohead Engineering, his traditional field of respon-sibility. Jochen Ganz has been working at the Weinigsite in Tauberbischofsheim for some time in thecontext of digitization. For example, he was signi-ficantly involved in the development of the suc-cessful “Weinig App Suite”. Its current functionalityalso bears his hallmark. Initially, the head of theproduct unit Service will continue to work until hissuccessor is settled, before moving to the top ofthe new business unit. The establishment of the new business unit Auto-mation & Digital Business is already the thirdmajor Weinig initiative in the Industry 4.0 area in ashort time. Following the introduction of the “W4.0digital” standard in Weinig’s own product world, the digital alliance “MindSphere World” was co-founded in January this year. Under the leadership of Siemens Ag., the membersof the organization work together on the cloud-based Siemens IoT operating system “MindSphe-re”. Access to the uniform platform helps Weinigto further develop “W4.0 digital” and optimize itfor the benefit of its customers. Chief Sales andMarketing Officer Gregor Baumbusch: “The cus-tomer benefit will remain an outstanding andunique strength of Weinig on the market evenin the age of digitization”.

GREDA AT XYLEXPO 2018The Company based in Mariano Comense conti-nues its 35 year tradition of exhibiting at thismajor international event. Xylexpo 2018 is one ofthe most important international fairs for wood-working technology and components for the fur-niture industry taking place from 8th to 12th Mayat Fiera Milano-Rho, Milan. "We are all veryexcited about this year’s Xylexpo” commentsMarianna Daschini, co-owner of Greda with herbrother Piero. “After a very intense series oftrade shows abroad, including Dubai for theWood Show, China at Interzum Gangzhou, Sofiaat Techno Mebel and finally in Russia at theUmids of Krasnodar we are honed and readyto meet our happy customers and potentialnew clients. You could say this is our WorldCup final! Our experience in other shows con-firms just how important it is for us to be part ofthe "Made in Italy" brand; the symbol that makesItalian based manufactures instantly recognizableall over the world". To take part in the 26thXylexpo has become not only a habit for Greda, but also a challenge. It is important to present thecompany in new and interesting ways while con-tinuing to communicate the traditions of quality, engineering and market leading technology withwhich Greda has become synonymous.

Marianna Daschini continues "We are experiencingstrong growth, illustrated by our recent moveinto a new purpose built factory, coupled withour progressive expansion into new marketsThe sacrifices made over the last few yearshave started to be repaid. We have always be-lieved that technological innovation was theonly real key to remain competitive, and withoutdoubt we can say that we are also protagonistsof the ‘notorious’ industry 4.0, that anyone istalking about”. Industry 4.0 is one of the mainthemes distinguishing the Xylexpo 2018 Fair. Now,more than ever, in a sector experiencing a te-chnological revolution, keeping up with the digi-tisation of society is essential to continue tocompete in a global market. ‘He who stops islost’, as the famous proverb says, a phrase thatsums up Greda’s continued ambition."Lot of news displayed at Xylexpo” enthusesMarianna. Apart from “Sprinter”, our five-axisfixed portal with multi-spindle head we will beexhibiting the new version of “Mitika V”, one ofour key strengths, a five-axis interpolated ma-chining centre designed for turning, milling, shaping and sanding, now with new operatingunits for even more diverse machining. And fi-nally, Xylexpo will be the stage for a world pre-view. I’m talking about “Venus”: the latest inno-vation patented by our company, designed toperform turning, milling, cutting, and drilling onsolid wood elements. A highly innovative workingcentre, equipped with multiple working groups,a mobile carriage and system for rotating andclamping the pieces by means of a tip andcounter-tip which can work up to 4 pieces atthe same time".

XYLEXPO

SCM PRESENTS THE NEW IOT FOR “INDUSTRY 4.0”

“We are really satisfied with the 26th edition ofXylexpo: for us, it was an opportunity to reaffirmour global leadership and at the same timehighlight our strong partnership with Italy andEurope”, commented Luigi De Vito, Scm DivisionDirector. “With three winners at the Xia- XylexpoInnovation Awards, we have shown that ourmanufacturing technology is not just an excel-lence recognized all over the world, but also akey reference in terms of innovation for theentire wood supply chain. We are sure that thecontacts collected during the exhibition willfurther push our business, which in the earlymonths of 2018 has been growing at two-digitrates...This 50th anniversary edition of Xylexpowas important for Scm also because we pre-sented our new headquarters and the new Su-perfici Technology Center in Villasanta (Monza)to hundreds of partners from all over the world. These new facilities fit into a process of consol-idation, into the business strategies of Scm andof the entire surface processing industry".Needless to say, Scm was one of the stars of theevent, with a huge booth presenting all the results

of their technological know-how. The mood wasvery positive, supported by three winners at theXia-Xylexpo Innovation Awards 2018 for threevery different technologies. In the "Tools" category, the winner was the combined end-cutting androunding unit of “minimax me 35”. As written inthe award reason, the jury appreciated the capacityto "combine end-cutting and rounding operations, executed with one single tool, thus allowing theconstruction of compact machines". In the "Coating”section, the star was the Scm gouge aggregatefor unique 3D finishing effects on panels. On thepodium also “Maestro smartech”, one of themost innovative solutions of the “Maestro DigitalSystems” platform, providing “service via remoteconnection and direct interaction between enduser and expert engineers based in the supplierheadquarters, also wearing smart glasses”.

THE “MAESTRO CONNECT” INNOVATIONXylexpo visitors showed great interest for the"Maestro Digital Systems" platform and for "Maestroconnect"; the latter, in response to Industry 4.0requirements, leverages thepotential of the "Internet ofThings" to create a data col-lection and analytics systemto monitor and optimize theproduction processes, offeringfull control over production performance and aset of services, including timely and smart main-tenance and optimized spare parts management. We talked about these topics with Manuela An-dreani, Software Product Manager at Scm.

“Industry 4.0” is a big topic, but what are the realbenefits for a wood industry company? What's itall about, which and how many “chapters” makeup this story that seems to get more and morecomplex, more and more "involving”?“The distinctive elements of “Industry 4.0” and“Smart Manufacturing” in the production systemand management methods of a company arebasically the integration and interconnectivityof physical and digital systems, therefore dataexchange between systems, complex analyticsapplied to such data, the benefits offered byreal-time adjustments and "smart" adaptabilityto existing and arising conditions. The foundationis represented by "key enabling technologies"(smart manufacturing technologies), which in-clude the "Industrial Internet of Things” (IioT),a technology that allows to connect and transferdata from machinery to the Internet, the analysisof such data "in the cloud", also using algorithmsfor predictive analysis (Big Data Analytics), tooffer each company the possibility to deliver val-ue-added services to customers, such as proac-tive service and predictive maintenance. IioTtechnology is combined with vision systemsusing augmented reality (Ar) to guide operatorsin their daily tasks, virtual reality (Vr) simulationof plants and integrated production lines to cal-culate productivity and to optimize processes, the exchange of data among all value chain op-erations through software that handle automateddata exchange across all players in the productionprocess... The implementation of digital technologyincreases productivity, helping companies in-crease machinery uptime. In other words, youcan produce with lower costs and be more com-petitive, expanding sales and consequently thepossibility to employ more people".

Which are the "differentiators" you have imple-mented in your platform?"To promote digital transformation processes,Scm has promoted and launched the digitalplatform "Maestro Digital Systems", a set ofapplications that support a digitalization andtechnological innovation process conceivedand developed for industrial companies. Theinspiring principle that differentiates the Scmvalue proposition is the development of aplatform of effective, secure and integratabletechnologies. Effective means they can handleinformation that is really useful for customersand provide them with real, immediate andmeasurable benefits in terms of productivityand efficiency; secure means they can protectinformation from unauthorized external access;and finally, such technologies must be integratedwith the software and machinery ecosystem al-ready in use”.

Are there specific types of companies that canget more benefits from these advanced solu-tions?“I don't think there are better candidates for thistransformation, I would rather say that somecompanies are ahead of others in the develop-ment of such solutions. Companies may havemore or less advanced IT infrastructures, somemay already have automated specific processeswith software, or may be more automated thanothers, as they have realized that productivitycan only be increased through the implementa-tion of digital and information technology".

Are there specific stages of the production cyclethat get more benefits from the introduction of"Factory X.0" concepts?“I would say the opposite: ideally, the integrationof systems and different process stages promotedby the Industry 4.0 requires that all the stages ofa production cycle transfer the collected information

and/or receive information from other systems. The Scm proposition has started from and focusedon machinery, the transmission of informationand the huge volume of knowledge available ineach machine, so that, in the first place, suchknowledge can be made available to customersin real time, and based on such knowledge, theycan generate valued-added services, for main-tenance and support, for instance. The next stepwill be the transition from "smart connected ma-chines" to "smart systems", where not just one,but all the objects of a system that are relevantfrom an information standpoint are interconnectedand exchange data".

More and more Oems are taking up new roles. Will these new "technology drivers" strengthenthis trend?“That's how it's going to be: increasing integrationwill encourage the transition from a "discrete"approach focused on a single part (a machine, for instance) to a holistic and system-orientedapproach, where the behavior of each part(the machine) will also depend on the systemwhere it fits and communicates. As a result, anOem will need to know the entire process of acustomer to identify the area that needs actionand properly address an issue with a dedicatedspecialist".

What will be the role of people, how should theirskills develop?“The first big effect we see is that the introductionof new technologies is shifting the focus offactory work from physical strength to brains.A worker using a smart device increases hisown productivity; according to many, this mighthave an impact on the gender gap, supportingthe future employment of women in the manu-facturing industry. Talking about skills redefinition,in ten years 40 percent of employment will berepresented by jobs that still do not exist, sothe key is not to guess which jobs will beavailable in the future, but rather to be ready tochange quickly and be able to identify, planand develop the skills that will be required inthe near future".

Can we say that the automatic factor is a reality?“Yes, that's true to different extents, accordingto the type of business we are considering. Butwe must be aware that the current automaticfactory will be different from tomorrow's!”.

SCM AT XYLEXPOSeveral delegations of operators from allover the world visited the 3,000-square-meters booth of Scm. There is a sharp in-crease in orders, negotiations and contacts, involving approximately 500 customers (halfof them from Italy, and a majority of Russianand French operators among internationalvisitors), for an expected turnover of at least30 million euro. “Work simple. Work digital”:this was the Scm motto at Xylexpo, repre-sented by the latest technological and digitalnews that characterized an “extraordinaryyear”, so they call it at Scm, with strong rev-enue growth, closer and closer to 700 millioneuro, and staff expansion beyond 3,600employees in Italy and worldwide. The Xyl-expo days also offered the opportunity toreaffirm the group's commitment to voca-tional training, with several experiences inItaly and around the world: in recent years,Scm has contribute to upgrade the equipmentfleets of eleven professional training centers, four of which in the past two years.

MARKETS

THE WOOD-BASED PANEL MARKET IN AUSTRALASIAAfter analyzing the panel markets in Italy, Europe,North America and South America, today we are pre-senting the particleboard and Mdf panel market inAustralasia, which is the geopolitical definition forthe area comprised of Australia and New Zealand. It's interesting that in this region there are no plantsfor Osb production.

Panel production in this part of the globe is definitelynot significant in terms of volume, if compared to therest of the world, but it is worth considering that Mdfpanels, especially in New Zealand, benefited from si-gnificant technological developments in the early Se-venties. I want to mention two persons I had thehonor to meet and who gave a major contribution tosuch evolution. The first one was Owen Haylock, anMdf pioneer who got the first PhD from the MasseyUniversity in New Zealand in 1957 and has contributedto the technological development of Mdf productionon a global scale. In 1981, in collaboration with Sunds Defibrator, hepublished an interesting book called: “Medium DensityFiberboard: Its origin, Manufacture and Use”. Hewas involved in the concept and commissioning ofthe first Mdf plant in Asia Pacific back in 1976, namelythe Rangiora, Nz site of Canterbury Timber Products(Ctp).Another Mdf pioneer is New Zealand's Murray Stur-geon who, together with Owen Haylock, was involvedin the installation of the first Ctp plant in Ashley andthen became the big boss of Nelson Pine Industries, now entirely owned by the Japanese group SumitomoForestry Limited (not to be confused with SumitomoCorporation). In Richmond, north of Christchurch, on the SouthIsland of New Zealand, he started to produce the firstMdf panel in 1986 and then he commissioned asecond plant with a continuous press by Kuster in1991, followed by a third one in 1997; then in 2000another new installation for Lvl (laminated veneerlumber) boards. So, we can say that Mdf panelshave experienced significant developments and te-chnological improvements here "down under", and ofcourse, especially for New Zealand, most productionwas exported. Also consider that, by virtue of itsnature, Mdf is the material that most resembles solidwood and is most suitable to finishing operations, i.e.lacquering/painting, and to be processed with machinetools for secondary processing in the furniture indu-stry.By virtue of these features, especially in Asia Mdfpanels have the biggest production shares, most ofall in China. And just like North America, also thismarket is dominated by big forestry groups, whichhave their core business in forest resources and, over the years, have gradually stepped into the wood-based panel market, including particleboard, Mdf orplywood.

In 2007, the world's production capacity of particleboardamounted to 91 million cubic meters, with only 1.1million made in Australia and New Zealand. Back then, the company Carter Holt Harvey wasvery active, accounting for almost 50 percent of theentire particleboard capacity in Australia and NewZealand. In 2018, the world's capacity is approximately 103.5million cubic meter annually, up by 12 percent, whilein Australasia the capacity level is basically unvaried;new actors are emerging in the market, such asBorg Industries that will launch particleboard pro-duction by the end of this year in a brand new plantwith 450,000 cubic meter annual capacity, equippedwith a continuous press. This group is taking over a few historical productionsites in Australia, both for particleboard and for Mdf,and a number of lamination and surface finishingplants, including Mont Gambier and Oberon. It should be noted that there are two all-Australianprivate companies that makes raw and laminatedparticleboard, namely D&R Henderson, with opera-tions in Benalla, Nsw and Borg Industries.

Particleboard is not very popular in NewZealand, while in Australia it representsthe largest business compared to plywoodand Mdf, with a 52 percent market sharein the past decade. Several changes haveoccurred in the business landscape inthis region. For instance, last March, theSumitomo Forestry production site inVictoria Australia decided to sell all AlpineMdf shares to the Thai company MetroParticle, the Asian giant of particleboardand Mdf.More recent news from the Mdfbusiness, dating back to June, is an ac-quisition by the Japanese company DaikenCorp., who took full control of the MatuaraMdf plant in New Zealand previously ownedby the Korean company Dongwha togetherwith Laminex Group, a Fletcher Buildingdivision. We can easily guess that, for Ja-

pan, panel production in Australia andNew Zealand is highly strategic bothfor the import of semifinished materialsand in the field of forest and energy re-sources. We will now look at a few sta-tistics of Mdf panel production. In 2008,the world's Mdf capacity amounted toapproximately 57 million cubic meters, with Australasia holding a share of 1.86million just below 3.2 percent, comprisedof 954 thousand cubic meters in Au-stralia and 913 thousand cubic metersin New Zealand. As previously mentioned, theglobal capacity at the end of 2017 was about 105million cubic meters/year (exceeding the productioncapacity of particleboard for the first time), so itwas almost doubled. In this case, Australasiapreserved its production capacity for Mdf pa-nels.

CONCLUSIONGenerally speaking, the situation of the market"down under" is positive. Constant production ca-pacity and a remarkable export share, combinedwith huge forest resources, support a stablemarket trend.

AFFORDABLE QUALITY“Until few years ago,our customers wereequally divided be-tween Italy andabroad, but nowmost of our rev-

enues come from outside the border”. So saidStefania Ratti, business partner at Fink, designingand manufacturing woodworking tools since 1924.Today, the portfolio of the Monza-based companyincludes disk blades, welded drills and mills, me-chanical-mount heads, tools for Cnc machinesand diamond-tipped tools, all complying with theEuropean standard En 847.“Approximately since the end of the crisis, wehave seen an incremental growth of the demandof special tools combined with a reduction ofstandard products. This is the outcome of aneconomic trend that forced many company toclose down and sell their assets, often online...“Our customers are mostly in the furniture in-dustry, but also in the production of doors andwindows, as well as sawmills. In the past werelied on resellers more than we do now, butthe economic crisis has cancelled many dis-tributors, and consequently, certain dynamicshave slightly changed". “On the global marketswe have been confronted for a long time nowwith fierce competition from Chinese manufac-turers. Despite the quality of their tools cannotbe compared to our standards, the very lowprices offered by most of these companiesoften cheat inexpert users into buying theirproducts, attracted by cheap prices”. This chal-lenge is not easy to face.. However, Fink have anace in the hole, quality. “We can offer high-qualitytools with affordable prices, and this is helping usstay competitive on the global markets”.

EVER-GROWING SPECIALIZATIONIn business for over thirty years,Gda is specializing in the pro-duction of hard metal disk bladesand diamond-tipped tools, bothstandard and special. “We mainlyaddress companies in the pri-mary operation and furniturebusinesses ", says Gianluca Adami, owner ofthe company based in Besenello, near Trento,"as well as customers who process aluminumand plastic. Over 70 percent of our revenuescome from international customers and wemainly operate through distributors, Oems, andmore in general, through industry professionals".“In recent years, we have seen a market rally, and this is definitely a positive factor which hashelped us work a lot and well. We operate is asegment where technological innovation is lim-ited, however we have to meet an increasingdemand for highly specialized tools, offeringthe maximum yield for each specific operation.Today, almost one half of the tools we manufac-ture are designed and made to measure basedon customer specifications". “What has changed is the manufacturing method.Gda has always been focused on automation, and more generally, on technological innovation. Now, in the age of Industry 4.0, we are furtheraccelerating into this direction, equipping ourworkshop with new dedicated software for pro-duction management and finished product con-trol, in order to improve and optimize the qualityof the entire production cycle”. Gda has huge fi-nished product stocks and a well-furbished wa-rehouse of raw materials to make standard andspecial tools.

CONSISTENT IMPROVEMENTMontenero was established in1970 with headquarters in Oderzo(near Treviso), supported by theentrepreneurial spirit of GiancarloMontenero and then his children.Today, it has 45 employees andapproximately five million euro re-venues, equally divided between domestic andforeign market. “70/75 percent of our productionis special tools, while the rest is standard tools, which can be mechanical-mount ì and diamond-tipped tools”, says Enrico Montenero, managingdirector. "Furniture and timber constructions, in-stead, are two market segments that, right now,are helping us achieve the most satisfactory re-sults”. In the past ten years, according to Monte-nero, this market has changed because “customersdemand special tools with shorter and shorterdelivery time, which requires strong commitmentin each step, from design and final execution. With high-level design, optimized production andhighly-qualified staff, we can deliver top-qualitytools”. “Before starting a collaboration with a toolmanufacturer, international customers want tomake sure that the organization can support theirneeds, and this inevitably leads them to appreciatethe assets and resources behind the productionof each product. For Italian customers it's different,as their priority is service, which essentially meansfast delivery". For Montenero, the daily challengeis to find the best tradeoff between quality, priceand delivery time. “For Italian manufacturers, thisis an even tougher challenge, as we have to facecompetitors from Eastern Europe who can offerlower prices, partially because their labor costsare almost half of ours, and partially becausethey have to meet less stringent safety standards,as these regulations are implemented at countrylevel and not consistent all over Europe. However,Italian companies can make a difference also inthis domain....For us, it is essential to keep search-ing for methods to improve our production andproductivity. For this purpose, every year weinvest 8 to 12 percent of our revenues in researchand development”.

A SOLUTION TO EACH PROBLEMWith over 40 years of experience,15 employeesand average revenues close to one million and600 thousand euro, Tecnomec design and maketools for woodworking and panels (mills, insertheads, Hw/HS/Dia drills), with an 80 percentshare of special products made to customer spe-cifications and supported by high-level technicalconsulting. Working in this market segment in amarket like Italy is not always easy. Renato Per-solja, spokesperson of Tecnomec, has a clearvision: “Visiting our end user customers all overEurope, we come across almost embarrassingsituations, as we see every day that some com-petitors in some countries have expanded mas-sively, leveraging European funds that coverup to 80 percent of their investments". “Thesecompanies copy our products, without complyingwith any safety standard such as En 847/01/02,and also offering prices that Italian manufacturerscannot afford, due to the labor costs we haveto bear. Therefore, the only viable approach isto make continuous product innovation to offer"solutions" that allow customers to optimize theirproduction, and consequently achieve economicbenefits". Persolja concludes: “Our strong pride

and will to work help uscarry on”.

THE EVOLUTION OF TOOLS PRODUCTIONHAPPY BIRTHDAY BUP!

Gianluca Adami.

Enrico Montenero.

Two families, one company. Afifty-year-long story, started in1968 when Umberto Battistelliand Piero Bertuccioli, levera-ging the experience acquired atMagnani Utensili, decided to ven-ture into setting up their own bu-siness. It worked and they are still active in thecompany, ready to lend a hand, to give advice, tooffer their longstanding experience. After all, theyhave been through it all, from the tough but pro-mising start, supported by the economic boomof those years and the powerful development ofthe Pesaro furniture district that recorded strongexpansion in the Seventies. Kitchen and furniture.Plenty of. For many markets. And so, opportunitiesexploded and the road became smoother for thetwo founders, despite a few sharp turns. Thecompany grew and employed the first workers, who would remain until retirement.“I think this is enough to explain what Bup,acronym for Battistelli-Bertuccioli utensili Pesaro, was and still is”, said Giorgio Battistelli, amember of the second generation and exportsales manager, as we met him in the headquartersof the company. Business began with classical tools for "conven-tional machines": braze-welded milling cutters, often custom-made, disk saw blades and anyother tool requested by customers. Giorgio joinedthe business in 1981, his brother Davide, Italiansales manager, about ten years later. Also Mattia,Piero's son and production manager, arrived inthose years. Things have not changed much, aswe mentioned: both founders are still monitoringthe situation, although they know that their childrenare now playing the game…“For fifty years, we have always been gettingon well”, Battistelli continued. “We have alwaysconsidered the company an asset, transformingit according to the requirements of a market incontinuous change. We are known all over theworld for our capacity to provide custom tools, this is our real vocation. We have decided tostand close to our customers, listening to theirneeds and implementing them effectively withthe technology we invest in constantly. We loveto call ourselves a “tool atelier”, because thisis our philosophy: ad hoc solutions, even nowthat we have a worldwide network of distributorsand agents and our destination market is muchwider. But we are still sticking to those strongprinciples, and as a matter of fact, customersand resellers rely on us because they appreciatethe service we have been offering them for fiftyyears, the support and technical expertise weoffer to find an answer, even to complex prob-lems. How can we work in this way while sellingin Australia, South America, Russia, Turkey orNew Zealand? It's easy, we know our job welland we have great skills and flexibility in pro-duction!".At Bup, they stick to an ancient project that theyhave been able to upgrade. The crisis has struck, but no one was dismissed.Making “custom” pro-ducts has certainly made these years "easier tobear": 80 percent of products are currently shippedabroad, and this figure is even more significant ifyou consider that custom products account for70 percent of revenues approximately.

What's in your catalog today?“Everything! In fifty years we have designed a

comprehensive range of tools, from hard metal to diamond, most for wood but also for alu-minum, composites and plas-tics, achieving significant suc-cess in the latter domains wherewe have also acquired profes-

sional skills and specific equipment. We delivervirtually any tool ordered by customers, althoughour specialty is milling tools. Diamond tools arethe latest addition to our production and theyhave become increasingly important, concur-rently with the increasing diffusion of panels".

What about your relationships with machinerymanufacturers?“They have recognized the importance of ourrole and we have many significant partners, aswe can work together on future techniques andthey can leverage our experience, because ul-timately the materials they process get in touchwith our tools. Without such collaboration wewould not have overcome the challenge ofrecent years, when the market required tools toget as close as possible to the finished productwithout sanding. Everyone dreams about asingle pass and this is increasingly possible to-day, but not always, as finishing quality dependson several factors. Everyone would like to havea tool that works perfectly, lasts forever andmaybe is even cheap, but durability and finishingquality are definitely contrasting elements. Inthis respect, it is important for the machine op-erator to be able to manage tools properly: ifthey stick to correct parameters, performancecan be really very high. I can tell you that thefactories and workshops that are "familiar" withtools and their features achieve much better re-sults. Also for this reason, to share our knowledgeto the benefit of everyone, we choose to coop-erate with qualified distributors who know ourcompany and our philosophy, as well as materialsand machines, and can respond to customersoffering proper advice".

What about the future of tools?“…unfortunately, or fortunately, it does notdepend on wood only: furniture production in-creasingly relies on other materials, becausedesign is constantly making progress and wemust be ready to react. We are not afraid of thischallenge, as we have the necessary experienceand we are optimist by nature...”.

And your future?“After the recent tough years we are lookingahead with serenity and the confidence we cando even better all over the world. Meanwhilewe celebrate the fiftieth anniversary and don'tforget that this year is also the tenth anniversaryof Bup Turchia, our sales branch in Istanbulwith four employees committed to promotingour quality to "high-end" customers, more focusedon quality than price. We offer a large stock oftools, and from the very first year, we havealways had our own booth at the Istanbulindustry exhibition. In Turkey, we follow thesame philosophy to be always close to ourcustomers, provide custom solutions and offerthe best service".

LEITZ“PROFILCUT Q”: MORE PROFIT AT ALL LEVELS!

METAL WORLD“VICTORIA-D”

FOCUS on tools

As a multifunctional toolfamily, “ProfilCut Q”from Leitz offers the rightmachining solution foralmost every require-ment, every material and

every machine and offers more quality and quantitycut by cut. The “ProfilCut Q” tool system sets thestandard for cutting quality. The playfree clampingof the knives, extra sharp cutting edges with poli-shed edges as well as its precise balancingquality result in a significantly improved finishquality and reduce scrap and rework. The highperformance coating of the knives as standardensures long tool life and thus reduces productioncosts. The special tool design with roundedcorners and edges reduces noise and improvesworkplace ergonomics. When developing the“ProfilCut Q” system, Leitz engineers also tookthe issue of handling into account and havecreated improvements in this area. With similarlycomplex tool sets, the user can often only changethe knives by removing the complete set from themachine and disassembling it. Not so with “ProfilCutQ”. Here the main cutting edges and the secondarycutting edges can be easily reached and ex-changed in sets. This saves a lot of time. In its“Premium version”, “ProfilCut Q” offers the highestcutting speeds in the industry. It is thus aimedprimarily at customers with stationary technologyand high part output. Conventional systemsalready reach their limits at cutting speeds ofeighty to a maximum of ninety meters per second.“ProfilCut Q Premium” is approved for cutting

speeds up to 120 meters per second. The resultinghigher feed rates with the same number of teethmean a significant increase in productivity. In ad-dition, the particularly high concentricity in com-bination with the high speeds leads to a greatlyimproved finish quality. As a pioneer, the new “ProfilCut Q Diamond”exchangeable knife head system sets new stan-dards in machining. The unique combination ofultra-light aluminium tool body and resharpenable, constant diameter diamond edges guaranteesmaximum productivity combined with significantlyhigher efficiency. This makes it particularly suitablefor the processing of abrasive material as well asfor applications in the field of advanced materialssuch as aluminium, fibre-reinforced compositesor gluelam. With cutting edges made of polycry-stalline diamond (Pcd), the hardest cutting materialin the world, these materials can be processedprecisely and without loss of performance. Evenwith repeated resharpening, the diameter andprofile of the cutting edge remain unchanged.“ProfilCut Q Diamond” can be resharpened fivetimes and, with a tool life that is twenty timeslonger, offers significant cost savings in comparisonto disposable tungsten carbide systems. Productivity, flexibility and individuality – the “Pro-filCut Q” system family combines the advantagesof exchangeable knife systems and constant dia-meter, resharpenable diamond knives to form an

unbeatable combina-tion, thus enabling tai-lor-made and econo-mical solutions for al-most any customerrequirement.

TWT“NADIA”, THE COATING THAT BEATS FRICTION

In its commitment to improving the performanceof its tools and to bringing the “insert/piecesoutput” ratio to even higher levels, Twt appliesthe “NaDia Diamond Coating” technique toits inserts. The treatment consists in an innovativecoating that lengthens the lifespan of the knivesand decreases wear, guarantees excellent fi-nishing results that are even and constant overtime, and therefore greatly reduces the main-tenance required. The coating is obtained byapplying a layer of a substance called Liquid-Diamond onto the cutting edges via a processcalled “Pe-Cvd” (Plasma enhanced Chemicalvapor deposition) at low temperatures. Thelayer, about 1 micron thick, makes the knivesvery hard, more capable of resisting abrasionand wear, and provides them with a lower co-efficient of friction, an anti-gripping effect andmore fluidity when in contact with wood.

The coating is applied to the finished knives, without any limitations in shape. Its thinnessmakes it especially suited for application tostandard knives. In short, “NaDia” technologycan be applied to any mechanical-fasteningtool. Many tests show that it increases thelifespan of treated knives by up to 300 percent.Another evident advantage is the improvementin terms of finishing quality with all wood producttypes: solid wood, glulam, blockboard panels, plywood and chipboard panels improved withwood veneering.

Two more strong points of the “Victoria-D” are thelow power absorption and the low acoustic emis-

sion thanks to the layout and dimensions of thecutting edges and to discharge geometry.Metal World, in expansion towards new trades, will be present for the first time at InternationalWoodworking Fair in Atlanta, Georgia (US), from22nd to 25th August 2018, Building C, stand2651.

With the right tools, you get tearfree edges andlong tool life! Leuco‘s Italian customers arealways using new trendy materials for furnitureand interior design with a great sense of design.Since the new materials are a composite of dif-ferent materials, the question immediately followshow these materials are to be sawed, milled ordrilled. Leuco has a very large tool know-howfor new materials and advises customers indetail. At Xylexpo alone, they presented toolingsolutions for 14 cutting-edge trend materials,e.g. for antifingerprint, light concrete, linoleum, gypsum fiber acoustic panels and magneticboards. Magnetic panels, for example, are very

abrasive andthe metal in-sert may cau-se flyingsparks. Formagnetic bo-ards with steel

foil, Leuco recommends a saw blade with tra-pezoidal flat teeth and a special carbide grade. For magnetic steel panels with steel mesh adiamond-tipped saw blade with hollow backtooth geometry. Both saw blades stand for ra-zor-sharp cutting quality and very long tool lifewithout flying sparks. For formatting and joiningon Cnc machines, Leuco has been offering a“Vhw end mill” made of a newly developedcarbide cutting material since March 2018,which is very wear-resistant and ensures longertool life. The tools made of this special carbideare available in stock in the cutting diameters12 mm and 18 mm. ESSETRE KEEPS GROWING

Last May 12th, Milan saw theconclusion of the 2018 editionof Xylexpo, the biennial interna-tional fair dedicated to woodworking technologies. For Ims,tool holders manufacturer forCnc machines for wood, marble, glass and iron, Xylexpo is a notto be missed event for promotingtheir new commercial strategies.During the exhibition, Ims un-veiled not only their new techno-logy, the dust extraction systemIms “Twister”, but also its evolu-tion in hydraulic tool holders te-chnology, the Ims “Twister Hy-dro”. Both of these technologiesfind their field of application inthe Cnc cutting of chipboard, laminated materials, Hpl, Mdfand drywall. Both Ims “Twister”and Ims “Twister Hydro” takeadvantage of the tool holderspeed to generate an air fluxthat prevents the adhesion ofprocessing residues to the tool’sprofile, preserving the precisionof the cut. Furthermore, chan-neling the dust to the machinesuction system, they drasticallyreduce maintenance time.

The advantage of the new “Hy-dro” version is an even greaterprecision, due to the hydraulictechnology and lack of intercon-nection to the elastic collet. Thanksto these factors, both run outvalue and vibrations drasticallydecrease. Moreover, on the pro-ducts side, Ims recently expandedits catalogue dedicated to woodworking tool holders: the companystandardized the sawblade hol-ders, a category of products untilnow designed and producedupon request only. Today, movingforward Ims clients can count onan entirely dedicated sawbladeholder line available for everykind of Hsk and Iso connection. As always, Ims aspires to imprinttheir quality excellence standardeven in these new types of pro-ducts.

Tokeep up with continuous marketevolution, the company basedin Thiene (Vicenza) has deve-loped the new machining center"Techno Progress", offeringan excellent tradeoff for theproducers of beams and anytype of prefab timber wall. The new Essetre concept is toprocess beams and walls withhalf the footprint normally re-quired for two different machinesto execute the same production, significantly reducing labor timeand costs through the use of leading-edge Industry4.0 technology. The standard version of “Techno Progress” isequipped with a five-axis milling unit with automatednine-position tool changer that can operate bothin the beam and in the wall area. For those who need to increase production expo-nentially, Essetre offers a machine configurationwith four independent operating groups, includinga second independent five-axis milling unit withautomated nine-position tool changer that canwork concurrently with the first five-axis head inthe beam area. This configuration eliminates toolchanging time and the ridges can be processedusing two heads simultaneously to increase pro-duction significantly. The third operating unit is afive-axis aggregate with 55 kW motor, specific forX-Lam wall cutting, using a blade with up to1,200 mm diameter, to cut thick walls up to 400millimetres. Finally, the independent stapling head, 100 percentflexible, makes "Techno Progress" a one-of-a-kindmachine in its category. This allows to process frame walls automaticallywhile increasing stapling accuracy with no labor, and most of all, the walls are certifiable.

The machine is designed with a versatile wor-kbench to clamp X-Lam walls and frame walls;with its structure, the workbench fits both productionprocesses, thanks to different options installed, including vacuum system and cups to retain X-Lam elements. BARBERAN & KLEIBERIT:SECOND HOT COATING LINE IN INDIAStylam Industries Ltd. will produce HotCoating panels at the end of the year withtheir new acquisition, the second one, fromBarberán. The coating line from Barberànuses the product Hot Coating from Kleiberit, which allows to apply directly on the lami-nated surface with a perfect adhesion andbonding. This new line for laminated panelswill improve the product properties, resist-ance and durability. The line of 60 meterslength will be equipped with the “Excimer”technology for an inert curing atmosphereto achieve an extraordinary “supermatt”finish among the high gloss finishing.Stylam Industries Limited, with a plant atPanchkula, near Chandigarh, in North India, has been developing high quality laminatessince 1991.

Zetagì has created a new sample collectionfor its “Holzfreund” water-based systems withthe aim of presenting their actual coating resultsas realistically as possible. The new samplesinclude 14 wood blocks treated with the 681series’ primers, ranging from the Neutral“681000” colour to all other tints: “Honey681429”, “Chestnut 681005”, “Larch 681194”,“Light Walnut 681128”, “Oak 681322”, “ReddishWalnut 681125”, “Walnut 681001”, “Dark Oak681008”, “Douglas 681002”, “Mahogany681006”, “Ebony 681007” and “Green 681116”.The samples faithfully reproduce the resultsobtainable, although the properties of the sub-strate and the humidity of the wood at the timeof application, of course, may affect the yieldof the products. Given the interest of internationalmarkets, the collection of samples is availablein two languages, Italian and English. The water-based primers from the “681” seriesare formulated with special high quality water-soluble resins. They have been specifically de-signed for the treatment of window and doorframes in coniferous woods such as pine, fingerjoint pine, fir, and lamellar pine, as well asbeams and matchboards in general.

Their excellent spreading qualities enable themto effectively penetrate the surfaces withoutlifting the wood fibres. In order to ensure good weathering resistance, the substrates can be over-coated with Hol-zfreund water-based finishes, featuring excellentwater resistance and surface hardness, aswell as good film elasticity and very high adhe-sion properties. Such characteristics allow them to adapt toany temperature and climate change, thus en-suring a long service life and maintaining thehigh aesthetic value of the frames treated. ■

Siempelkamp, the German machine manufacturer, unveils its technological innovations for the pro-duction of MDF and particleboards made of ricestraw and other an-nual plants at Xylexpo 2018in Milan. Siempelkamp is positioning itself globallyas a technological driver in the use of annualplants for the production of Mdf and particleboards. The Siempelkamp Group is at the same timesending a clear signal in favor of green businessand efficient management of resources. Althoughrice straw is produced in significant quantities allaround the world, it is rarely pro- cessed industrially. In addition, wood has been exploited to a growingdegree for some years now to generate heat andpower, leading to a scarcity of timber and a risein the prices demanded for wood as a raw materialon the world market. Mdf, Osb and particleboardsmade from annual plants consist of 100 percentannually renewable resources which, as they area natural waste product, do not compete withfood production. Around 5.1 billion metric tons ofrice straw are produced worldwide each year asa low-cost agricultural waste product. The development of suitable production facilitiesposed a particular challenge to Siempelkamp.Processing of rice straw to produce an Mdf orparticleboard is much more com-plex than wood. This is due to the high proportion of inorganicconstituents in rice straw, especially silicates, andimpurities such as sand and loam from the strawharvest. The raw material needs to be cleaned,as downstream plant components will otherwisesuffer wear too quickly in the further productionprocess and sufficient workability of the boards

cannot be ensured. Separation of inorganic con-stituents and impurities is realized in a new two-stage process developed by Siempelkamp. Thefirst step involves the separation of impuritiesand coarse constituents such as entrained sandand silicate dust released during processing ofthe rice straw and their elimination through anairflow process. The cleaned rice straw is thenpro-cessed in the refiner using mechanical andthermal pressure to create high quality fibers andthen further purified in a second step. In contrastto normal Mdf production, resinating of rice strawfibers only occurs after the dryer. Siempelkampemploys a process for the dry application of resinhere using a newly developed continuous blendingsystem. The newly developed “Neo Blender”ensures uniform, continuous gluing of fibers, isextremely resistant to wear and, thanks to ascrew-on mixing chamber cover, is easy to main-tain. The material properties of rice straw in pro-duction were consciously taken into considerationdur- ing the process.A core element of wood-based panel plants isthe “ContiRoll®” continuous press which hasbeen in successful use around the world for manydecades in the production of Mdf, Osb and parti-cleboards. The ninth generation of the press hasbeen included in the Siempelkamp productportfolio since last year. Siempelkamp presentedits new 6-fold saw at Xylexpo. By using six saws, lab cuts can be executed precisely and withoutloss of speed. Siempelkamp presented furthertechnical innovations at Xylexpo including the“EcoFormer” from Cmc Texpan, Siempelkamp’sItalian subsidiary, and the “Ecopulser” for con-tactless comminution of wood chips and particles.

KABELSCHLEPPThe “Alu Guide” system from Tsubaki Ka-belschlepp is available for long travel lengths onaxes and portals, among other applications. Themodular guide channel system made from corro-sion resistant aluminum resists high strain fromacceleration, speed and wear. On gliding cablecarriers, they ensure particularly quiet, low vibrationrunning. The channel profiles with 2000 mm lengthare easy to install and can be individually tailoredto the required width for the cable carrier. A highstrength, temperature resistant stainless steel gli-ding layer supports speeds up to 25 m/s. Newgliding bars reduce wear and increase the servicelife of the carrier. Additional damping strips, which can be orderedas an option, can additionally reduce noise emis-sions in the guide channel. In addition to fixingsets for the cable carrier in the channel, we alsooffer a lift-off protection as a step-on guard for thecable carrier, fixing elements for cables and hoseson the outside of the cable carrier as well as con-necting elements for parallel positioning of thechannels.”The mounting kits can be used to attach theguide channels quickly and easily on the insideand outside. The kits contain all fixing elementsrequired for installing the channel side walls, whe-reby this can be done independently of thesupport elements such as consoles as a “flyingjoint”.

HOMAG’S SUCCESS...

Satisfaction for the business results achieved atthe exhibition and the opportunity to introducethe "new Homag" to the world. Without forgettinga special mention by the Xia Award jury. Let'sstart from here, as the Xia-Xylexpo InnovationAward jury decided to give a special mention toa product that had not even been submitted for anomination by Homag. The jury, walking aroundthe fairgrounds to examine the nominated solutions, noticed the automated guided vehicle "Transbot",definitely the most striking element of the "auto-nomous production cell" presented by the groupin Milan. The cell is a high-tech workshop capableof producing with full flexibility, linking differentworking cells using traditional systems as well asthis small robot that connects different processstages, enabling unattended operation. And theydecided to reward it, although it was "out of com-petition". This “Autonomous Cell” is a fully independentworkshop, two fully automated and integrated is-lands physically connected by small assistantsthat carry workpieces from one machine to theother. All managed by the production controlsystem “ControllerMes”, that communicates witheach control system of the automated edgebandingislands and the robot-assisted cnc island, as wellas with the “transbot” controls; here, a "manager"of the entire fleet of Automated Guided Vehiclesplans the routes of all automated vehicles. InMilan, Homag presented an extensive series ofmachines for each stage of the supply chain, allwith brand new dress, visuals and layout. The new look makes them more "attractive" andis also a visible sign of constant commitment toresearch and innovation. One name (Homag), anew logo, a more modern design that the engineersof the German giant have adopted to dress user-friendlier machines, which can be easily networkedand integrated through the digital platform - or"ecosystem", as they prefer to call it - "tapio".As already mentioned in this magazine, Homaghas renamed its machines to the benefit of custo-mers: all Homag edgebanding machines are nowgathered under the "EdgeTeq" naming, "Sawtech"for sawing machines, "DrillTeq" for drilling centersand "CentaTeq" for numerical control machiningcenters. The classification of models has alsobeen optimized, introducing a systems of lettersand figures that will immediately indicate the"type" of solution you are watching. For instance,an "EdgeTeq" edgebanding machine with an "S"is a single-sided model, while a "D" indicates adouble-side edgebander. A number from one tonine will indicate the "level" of the solution, fromentry-level "class 1" to high-end "class 9" for indu-strial companies.

The German group's management took the op-portunity to organize a press conference in Milan, where so many media representatives were ga-thered. They offered plenty of information, startingfrom the financial results presented by AndreasDenker, Executive Vice President Global Salesand Marketing. The year 2017 closed with 1,224million euro revenues, 13 percent more thanthe previous year. The growth of orders waseven more significant, reaching 1,366 million euro,17 percent more than 1,165 in 2016; significantincrease also for operating Ebit, fromo 65 millionin 2016 to 94 in 2017. Back to orders, most ofthem came from Central and Southern Europe(30 percent, 11 percent more than in 2016); 24percent from Northern and Eastern Europe (plus19 percent); and 22 percent from North America

(plus 13 percent). It is worth noticing the 16percent share of orders from China, up by 48percent from 2016. The press conference in Milanalso offered a preview of what Homag expects inthe future: the most positive trend is expectedfrom China, which should increase its furnitureproduction by 40 percent approximately, thussupporting the demand for technology and solu-tions with high automation levels. On a globalscale, growth should be more moderate (furnitureproduction is increasing by 22 percent over thenext five years), while the situation in Italy shouldachieve substantial stability, with an increase inthe demand for automation and "smart" machinesand plants by just above 1 percent.Much space was dedicated to “tapio”, furtherdeveloped with the joint contribution of 22 partnersthat are collaborating to expand and improve this"ecosystem": in recent months, more "big names"have joined the team – including Ake, Barberan,Duerr, Heesemann, Hettich, Makor – bringing arange of diverse skills and expertise into thesystem. As a result, the platform is increasinglyable to handle entire complex processes, involvingtechnologies and solutions from different vendors, with no technical issues and with utmost effecti-veness; furthermore, service is also improving, with the capacity to anticipate any problem andprovide a solution even before an issue occurs. Then the word went to Achim Homeier, DirectorGlobal Product Management at Homag, who re-minded that technology demand is stronglyaffected by the current trends of design, demandand consumption of new furniture. Homag has collected all of these trends to imple-ment them into its wide range of solutions, manyof which were exhibited in Milan to show wherethe company stands along the way to a real“Smart Factory”, independently of size and pro-duction volumes. What Homag and, in general, the entire wood and furniture technology industryoffer today is the possibility to build smart factoriesthat provide entrepreneurs with an instrument totransform their ideas and designs into productswith plenty of quality, functionality, visual impactand, possibly, a competitive price. BACK TO CONTROLLERMES”...

In Milan, it was clear that software, artificialintelligence and integrated management sys-tems are more and more the key differentiatorsfor the digital transformation of the industry,a process that aims at maximum efficiency, high quality and full visibility of information.Homag has decided to open a new operatingarea – “Homag Consulting and Software”– for the development of custom software. One of the first creations is "ControllerMes",a control system that generates a continuousflow of information in production and providesthe necessary tools for planning and execu-tion. Data is generated by a software suchas Homag woodCad/Cam and then sent di-rectly to "ControllerMes", which handles allsubsequent operations: from label and bar-code generation (allowing the identificationof each item) to the information required byeach machine to operate correctly within theprocess; from the "smart" collection of ordersto the optimization of production batches, upto job status control, full traceability of eachitem, and emergency management.
