Amanda Dube, a Grade 1 pupil at Copesville Primary was shocked by a fence outside her neighbour’s house. According to the neighbour, Thulile Msomi, Amanda had visit- ed her daughter on Saturday morn- ing when the incident happened. “She was inside the house to- gether with my daughter and son. I had asked my son to fetch water for me outside the house, since I was going to the toilet. Msunduzi municipality spokes- person Brian Zuma said that they are saddened by the loss of life in this manner. “In the past 20 years, 6.5 million households have been electrified and that translates to 1300 new connections daily nationwide. We do acknowledge that there is back- log in our city, and the municipality has committed to electrifying infor- mal settlements first, with the hope that illegal connections will be brought to a minimum. As soon as the programme has been finalised, it will be made pub- lic so that people will know as to when they will benefit from this programme”. SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said an in- quest docket has been opened and police are investigating circum- stances surrounding the incident. “People must notify their local municipal office immediately, if they know of an illegally connected consumer. Warning for bankcustomers not tocarry cashECHO REPORTER>>[email protected]
THE South African Bank Risk Informa-tion Centre (Sabric) is warning bankcustomers to bemindful of the risks as-
sociated with carrying cash to and from thebanks this festive season.
Sabric CEO Kalyani Pillay advised bankcustomers to consider alternativemethods ofbanking such as using internet or ATM trans-fers as opposed to carrying cash.
“As the festival season loomsSabricwarnsbank customers to bewary of their surround-ingswhengoingtoandfromthebanktodepos-it or to withdraw cash.
“The continuing occurrence of these rob-beries is a worrying factor for the banking in-dustry as it demonstrates that this is a highlyorganised crime which affects their clients.
“The criminals work in organised syndi-cates and often these syndicates designate“spotters” that look-out for people makinglargecashwithdrawals insidebankbranches.
“Once the perpetrators identify their vic-tims, they pass on the information to their co-perpetrators;whoareusually in thevicinityofthe bank, and who in turn rob the individual, eitherathisplaceofbusiness, homeorenrouteto their destination,” she said.
“Itiswiththisinmindthatweareappealingto bank customers to refrain from carryinglarge sums of cash in order to lessen their ex-posure to the risk of these attacks, said Pillay.
She said anyone who carries cash to andfrom a bank can be affected. This includes in-dividuals, small businesses as well as savingclubs such as stokvels. There are many alter-nate ways to bank and the banks themselvesaremore thanwilling toadvise their clientsonthe different solutions.
She further said the banking industry viaSabric, alsoworks very closelywith the SouthAfrican Police Service in dealing with thiscrime type.
“Sabric will continue working with theSouth African Police Services (SAPS) and thebanks toensure that thenumberofassociatedrobberies decrease and to ensure effective in-vestigation of these cases,” she said.

SO Cosatu president SdumoDlamini may prove not neces-sarily tobea stoogeof thepresi-
dent Jacob Zuma government afterall.
Speculation and innuendos havehad it that Dlamini is a Zuma “cash-and-carryboy”whoseprimemissionis to dampen Cosatu’s militancywhich was evident when suspendedCosatu general-secretary, Zwelinzi-ma Vavi, was around.
As the Vavi “rape” and “corrup-tion” charges (sounds familiar ofcourse) were making headlines re-cently, I quickly googled Dlamini andstarted analysing his historical and
career background in relation to hisperceived role as a ‘Zuma sell-out’ ofsome sort.
Judging fromhis recent utteranc-es,Dlaminimayyetdispleasehiscrit-ics if he remains consistent or standfirm against increased toll-gates feesonstrategicnational roadsaswell as,(of course I do not like this one), theyouth wage subsidy which he rightlypoints out is the same thing as thepiece of legislation that is intended tobenefittheyouth(indeedIsupportthelatter).
Like Vavi, Dlamini alsomaintainsthat incentivestoencouragebusinessto employ the youth are not in the in-terestofolderemployeeswhomaybeundermined when employers re-trench them and employ youngstersbecause they comewith governmentbenefits.
Obviously, I can understand thatrising toll-gate charges are a seriousissue given the fact that our countryis deeply dividedwhen it comes to its
social and economic status – somepeople are very poor and others arevery rich. For instance, I can under-stand how a struggling taxi owner(and there are many of them outthere),will feel the pinch in his or herpocket if he has to pay more in orderto use the road in Johannesburg.
But if the increaseswere targetingtrucks and buses only, I would nothaveanythingtosayabout thematterbecause thesehugevehicles really doundermine the expected life-span oftheroadnetwork. There isnothingasdisappointing as seeing a road thatwas originally beautifully tarred de-velopingpotholesprimarilyduetotheexcessive presence of trucks on ourroads.
So timewill tell if theVavi-Dlaminifall-outmattermay have been blownout of proportion or not.
Is Dlamini a government sweet-heart as themediawould have us be-lieve or not? Is the Vavi suspension agenuine internalmatter related toor-
ganisational mismanagement or aploy to weaken Cosatu as we are oflate led to believe, or not?
Experience has shown countlesstimes that powerandmoneyare verycontroversial. For instance, it is quitecommon in any organisation to havethe president not agreeing with thedeputy president or the general sec-retary.
It happens inbusiness circles thattheCEOdisagreeswith the chairmanof the company’s board of directors. And the same is true for governmentdepartments where there have beencases where a minister or MEC doesnot seeeye toeyewithhisorherheadofdepartment,orthemunicipalman-ager is at odd with his or her mayor.
The role of Cosatu in South Africais very significant. Even though it isnot nice to be stuck in traffic whenthere is a march, I support peacefulprotest action that represents the in-terests of the working class becausemy sympathies are with them. And
that is it.Inasmuch as I do not agree with
Cosatu on their stance on the issue ofthe youthwage subsidy, I do notwishto see the over 2 million-memberstrong labour federation losing thekind of power it has presently.
I do not wish to see a divided Co-satu thatwill not be respected by em-ployers, (including government as amajoremployer),becausethefreeen-terprise system thrives on exploitingthe working class.
Hence the brave Marxist call:“Workersof theworldunite, youhavenothing to lose but your chains1”
For as long as employers earn in-sanelyhugesalaries,ownmanyvehi-clesandhomesthattheydonotneces-sarily need, enjoy endless overseasholidays with mistresses or families, while their workers starve in shacksand townships, they do not have mysympathies.

TALKINGFOOTBALL
“THE better a coach knows his job andthe better he masters that job, themore he will gain the understandingand respect of the players.” Unknown. It is also true that great footballers area product of great coaches. Goodcoaching relies on an indepth knowledge of subjects like psychology andpedagogy. If the South African footballtalent is to reach its true potential, theprofile of a “football coach” will haveto be revisited.Football coaching in the modern era
is a difficult and complex profession. Acoach also needs to be a specialist intechnicaltactical work and physicaland psychological development. Football people need to develop a cultureof reading, studying, researching, experimenting etc. We need to learn andunderstand the importance of discipline in acquiring knowledge. I think wetend to live too much on yesterday.
Are South African football coachesready for new developments in themodern game? The fact that over thepast twenty years very few playershave broken into major Europeanleagues is a testament of our coachinglevels. We seem to be wary of innovations. We also lack ambition. The majority of professional coaches are con
tent to be “big stars” in a small pond.It is not right that a country that producedProfessorChrisBarnard–ahearttransplant specialist cannot producestar coaches and players. It is also important that we start doinginstead of talking. We also need tostartgivinginsteadoftaking.SouthAfricans are capable of doing and achieving big in any sphere of life. The problem is that we still think that the worldowe us favours. The language is toomuch about what people can take instead of what we can do. There are alsotoo many chiefs that are pointing fingersinsteadofdoingthework.Themajority of us will have to dirty their handsif South Africa is to join successful nations. The time for singing and dancingis over.
Jordan – Safa president is talkingabout the need to increase a numberof coaches at every level. How many ofour people are ready to serve withoutcompensation? Sure, increasing numbers is a good direction but attitudesto service need to change. Money cannot do things. It is only there to givesupport. Coaching, just like teachingand nursing, is a vocation.Lastly, teaching and coaching begins
at home. Fathers and mothers are thefirst teachers and coaches of their children. Generally, South African parentsseem to think that other people shouldtake this responsibility. We have manythings to say about structures like government and Safa and yet we are failing in our responsibilities. Charity begins at home. Take care of your children’s future. Stop complaining andstart doing the work. Unzima lomthwalo!
