No. 6 PMB [email protected]www.skhautoparts.co.za 24 hour water wastage in Copesville >> There are more than four taps leaking in one street NOMPENDULO NGUBANE >>[email protected]T HE non-stop gushing of water from taps in Copesville’s Swapo A section continues to raise concerns from residents and road users in the area. According to some of the residents, more than four taps are leaking in one street and they say that this happens in most of the streets in the Swapo A area. When Echo visited the area where concerns have been raised, water was running from the taps onto the main road. One concerned citizen, Moosa Ismael, said that seeing the water being wasted prompted him to phone the municipality. He said that when he notified them of the situation, the municipality promised that the relevant people from the water department would come to fix the taps. “I have lost count of the phone calls that I have made to the municipality. The same thing was happening in December . The water pours from the main taps and it runs into the road. “This is a worrying matter since we are being warned that we have to save water. “The great concern is the manner in which the relevant people are handling this issue. We have water that runs non-stop and sometimes this happens for a month. The taps are dripping day and night and it has become normal,” said Moosa. Delisile Zuma who was at one of the leaking taps said that the breakage of the taps is caused by children. “We have uncomfortable, hot weather here and the children cool themselves off by splashing themselves with tap water. That is how the taps gets broken. People from the municipality come and fix the taps but after three or four days, they start dripping again. “We are used to wet and slippery roads and it is clear to everyone that water is being wasted,” said Zuma. The municipality was contacted for a comment but had not responded before going to print. WITH the University ofKwaZulu-Natal havingsuspended lectures until
23 February following the strikeaction over a 12% fee increase, students, with academic workpiling up, have pleaded withmanagement to meet theirdemands. The peaceful protest turned
violent late last week with a carbelonging to Risk ManagementServices (RMS) being burnt to acrisp on Sunday night on thePietermaritzburg campus.
Students say that their mainconcern is the fee hike in bothacademic and residentialregistration, and as a result mostof them have been financiallyexcluded.
Management sent a letter tostudents last week urging them tofinalize their registration by 20February.However students say itwill not help them as when theinstitution reopens on 23February, they will still be notregistered as no decision on theincrease has been taken.
Kwazi Simelane, an internalrelations students, said that her
registration has been delayedbecause of the strike.
“I only attended one lectureand because they are now sus-pended, it isdifficult to register forsome modules as not alllecturers are available.
“They must give studentswhat they want because the more
they delay, the more we willbe pressured to do our work in ashort space of time becausethey cannot extend the academicyear.”
Nozipho Ndlovu, an LLBstudent said that while they fallbehind in their school workbecause of the strike, they must
support those who have beenfinancially excluded.
“It is unfair that out of eightbillion applicants looking forfinancial aid, only four billionhave been approved funding. There is nothing negative aboutthestrikeaslongitisforthegreatergood.”
Lungile Mthiyane, anagricultural science student saidthat her main concern is thatothers had already started withtheir lectures when she was stillbattling with her registration.
“Hopefullybeforewereopenonthe 23rd, a decision wouldhave been made as those of uswho have not registered arealready behind.
“By the time we register, wewill have too much work tocover in a short space of time,” shesaid.
In a statement issued by thedirector of corporate affairs,Lesiba Seshoka said thatexecutive management willreview the situation and adviseaccordingly.
“The university is committedtoputting inplaceplans to recoverlost lecture time. We regret theinconvenience caused andapologise to students, parents andmembers of staff whosecommitments have beeninterrupted by the unfortunateactivitiesof ahandful of disruptiveelements.”

UMGENI Water has proposed a bulk water basic tariffincrease of 8.2% for the 2015/ 2016 financial year, which is slightly lower than that of the precedingfinancial year of 8.7%.
The tariff has not yet been approved by thenational minister of water affairs, said Msunduzimunicipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi at the ExecutiveCommittee (Exco) meeting.
“The impact of the tariff increase is such that asthe municipality, we have been previously buying1000 litres at R5,070 per kiloletre (kl) and we willhave to buy the same amount of water for R5,487per kl,” said Nkosi.
Umgeni will formally present the tariff to all itscustomers by the end of March.

Outrage over Sona drama
"It was wrong to disturbthe president whilepresenting his speech. Theyshould have waited for himto finish at least. The DAleft on their own freewill and no one shouldbe blamed for that."
Nkululeko Mnikathi:
"It is a disgrace whatwe saw at Sona, itwas too chaotic. It isa bad reflection aboutour country to othercountries. It showsthat we are notunited."
Sphamandla Memela:
"Political parties should learnto listen to each other and torespect one another. Whathappened at Sona is a clearreflection of what is happeningbetween them. Apart from thedrama that was caused, I thinkthe president did very well inaddressing issues that arecurrently facing our country."
Andile Mkhize:
"Opposition parties are nolonger behaving like oppositionparties, but instead base theirjudgements on personalvendettas. What happened atSona was a personal attackrather than a focus on thespeech itself. It was supposedto be a speech, and not aquestion and answer session.”
FOR many, the 2015 State of the Nation address (Sona) will be remembered as a circus, with EFF members being forcibly removed and the DA walkingout ahead of President Jacob Zuma’s speech. IFP leader Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi described the incident as “a disgrace to South African history.”NOKULUNGA NGOBESE took to the streets to find out what city residents had to say on the debacle.

SA political chaos typical of postcolonialAfrican politics degeneration
SIMPHIWE MKHIZE
THE much-anticipated theatreoftheabsurdfinallyunfoldedinour national parliament in
Cape Town, during the State of theNationaddresswhichwasdelayedbyan hour.
This was due to Economic Free-dom Fighters (EFF) demanding toknow when our state president,JacobZuma, isgoingtopaypartofthemoney for the upgrading of hisprivate home inNkandla, in linewithpublic protector Thuli Madonsela’srecommendations.
Obviously South African politicshas always been exciting, and it doesnot look like it is going to stopkeepingus on our toes for some time to come.
Seeing parliamentarians tradingblows with security personnel or thepolice at the parliamentarychambers could have been a typicalhumorous scene from a movie madeby goodold SouthAfrican filmmaker,Leon Schuster.
It was unpalatable to watch, especially when one remembers thatthe late honourable Nelson Mandelaled us to that place with muchreconciliatory dignity.
Of course, it was not the first timea South African parliamentarychamber has observed a dramaticscene. I am sure Helen Suzman, thelateformerDAstalwartwhocutalonefigure in aNationalParty domi-nated par-liament asanMP,musthave felt thesame asformerstatepresidentsFW deKlerk, andThaboMbeki did recently, when the then apartheid architect,HendriekVerwoed, wasmurdered inparliament.
It is appalling to note that thereconciliatory tone that Mandelaushered into our country’s politicalenvironment is now drifting awayvery fast.
For starters, howdoesEFF leaderJulius Malema label our president as
the number one tsotsi when no courtof law has proven him innocent of allthe allegations with regards to theLimpopo provincial governmenttransport department millions thathe allegedly helped himself tothrough his company?
But most importantly to me, whydid we have to haveMalema startinghis political party?
Lekota’s party, Cope, after his fallfrom grace. I dare say it’s a blackSouth African thing to fail to keep thepeace amongst the brothers.
Obviously, the defunct dream offormerSABCboss,ZwelakheSisuluofforming a black Boederbond wouldhave needed black magic to keepblack leaders together, sharing the
spoils of the new political dispensa-tion like the Afrikaaners did.
Iampermanently inaweof formerapartheid defence force ministerMagnusMalan, whoreportedly over-saw a huge budget which he sharedwith some 20 Afrikaaner families. That was true brotherhood by myevaluation.
Butno.Blacksmust fightoverwhocontrols which province or countryandwhat theyhaveamassed for theirown individual families. What a pity!
It is embarrassing to hear storiesof black service providers being fedup of the political elite and us civilservants because they are tired ofsharing huge sums of money withsleepingbusinesspartners, and theiremployees end up going without payas a result of the scramble forresources.
IdidnotexpectMalemaandZumato end up in this way. I saw them asimportant leaders of a great move-ment in Africa that the ANC has al-ways been.
When I met Malema for the firsttime in his then Luthuli house ANCyouthleagueoffice,Ireallythoughthewas Zuma’s big friend. There Iwas, having spent my personal
resources driving to Gautengwith anenthusiastic black budding filmmak-er, who wanted us to compile adocumentary on the humanitarianwork of Zuma’s foundation.
Of course, Malema received uswell and promised to help us findresources to profile this initiative.Indeed, we never heard from himagain, andbeforeIknewit,Zumawasin power and Malema was makingsweeping statements that they hadnever been friends.
Obviously, the rest is history.I have been disappointed by
several filmmaking initiatives, withbudding black producersmakingmeinvest my time and resources ininitiatives that never pay off or theyfail to share the incomewhenwepulloff the project.
But my disappointment withstrugglingblack filmmakers’greedina white-dominated filmmakingworlddidnotmatchthewayIhavefeltabout Malema and Zuma.
Iwonder how it felt to be deKlerk, sitting there, watching blacksexchangingblows in thesameparlia-ment where history made him handover power to the dignified iconicformer political prisoner Mandela.
Are we embracing a future that isdegenerating to another typicalAfrican state?
Only time will tell.
