NOMPENDULO NGUBANE >>[email protected]A BOUT 300 matric pupils enrolled at Intuition Collegeinthecityhaveabandonedclassesaf- ter discovering that they are not registered for the end of year exams. Embarking on strike, the pupils have accused the institution for failure to register them with the Department of Education so they will be ready to sit for the examinations. Pupils who spoke to Echo said the matter came to their attention when they went to check if they were registered with the department. According to a pupil, who refused to be named, only27pupilshavebeenregisteredoutofmorethan 300 that are enrolled at the institution. She said affected pupils are those that are up- grading their matric subjects and those that are do- ing the whole Grade 12. The pupils say it has been two weeks pupils since they have abandoned class- es. “We were told by the department that it was too late to even register. The closing date for registering with the department was on March 15. The infor- mation that we got from the department is that it’s already too late to register. We have tried to get the answers from the principal but he has failed to pro- vide us with the answers. “Coming to college is like a waste of time because we won’t get our results. This has resulted in a strike and it’s affecting us since there are no classes. Other pupils are asking for their refund, it’s been a wasted year. “There is no use of writing the exams if we won’t get our results at the end of the year. That clearly indicates that we would have to start afresh next year,” she said. Another pupil said he encountered the same predicament in 2011. He said he did not receive some of his results of the subjects he had studied for. “The school has been giving us problems each and every year. The principal is forever without an- swers about the situation. I’m confused how such a thing could be happening at the institution,” he said. Intuition principal Sphiwe Ngobese said the problem with the pupils is that they are confusing the stages of the registering process. He said pupils who submitted all their required documents for reg- istering have nothing to worry about. “ Registering is the last stage of the process and it has not reached that stage. The process is current- ly on the second phase where the department is cap- turing all the data that is required from the docu- ments from the pupils. This process takes four months and I will call them at any time when every- thing has been done,” said Ngobese. KwaZulu-Natal education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said before pupils register with any insti- tution, they must come and check with the depart- ment if that institution is operating legally. “Iftheysuspectthatthereisarawdeal, theymust visit our offices so that we can help them. >>BHEKISISA MNCUBE writes the political survival of Agang SA and the Economic Freedom Fightersis perilous as both outfits are built around charismatic leadership.
Agang SA and EFF offer only charisma
ONE of three grounds for legiti-mate rule, according to theGermaneconomist and sociol-
ogist MaxWeber is graceandcharis-ma.
Weber defined charismatic au-thority as “resting on devotion to theexceptional sanctity, heroism or ex-emplary character of an individualperson, andofthenormativepatternsor order revealed or ordained byhim.”
Recently two political partieshave entered the political landscapeof South Africa.
These are Agang SA led by aca-demic, Dr Mamphela Aletta Ramph-ele, and the Economic FreedomFighters (EFF) led by the high schoolgraduate, Julius Sello Malema.
Both parties exhibit a semblanceof charismatic leadership.
Both leaders are self-appointedcrusaders, who, we are made to be-lieve, will ignite innovation if not arevolution in the political landscapeof our country. Both of their shortstintsat thehelmof theirpoliticalout-fits is not based on popular vote butsome ‘revelation or heroism’ thatdrives them to stand up and lead.
An analysis of Dr Ramphele andMalema’s speeches in the last 30days shows that Ramphele unwit-tingly considers leadership as ‘a giftof grace’.
She seems to believe that she hasexemplary leadership qualities thatcan save South Africa from its “im-mediate demise”. She thinks herselfa prophet ordained by political godsto perform a special duty.
On the other hand Malema wit-tingly emphasises charisma whileoverwhelmingly leaning towards po-litical demagogue.
Both leaders frequently appeal totraditional moral values and to ideasofnational grandeur.Theybothpaintasimpleblackpictureof theiropposi-tion,namelytheruling ANC.TheANCisviewedasabeast infestedwithcor-rupt leaders presiding over an ineptadministration.
Themain distinction is thatMale-ma emphasises ideas of persecutionand theneed for revenge.Theuniqueselling proposition of his politicaloutfit is the nationalisation of themines and bankswithout compensa-tion and the expropriation of land, again without compensation.
Under Malema’s tutelage thewhitepopulationwouldhave to showremorse for its apartheid sins and letgo of all “ill-gotten gains”. The blackpopulation “will not want,” becauseMalema’s government will “shep-herd” them and provide all luxuriesenjoyed currently by a whiteminori-ty.
Malema has also apologised toSouthAfricans for bequeathing thema “rudderless” leader like PresidentJacob Zuma.
By painting a paranoid picture ofthe rulingparty,Malemastrengthenshostilities between his infant EFFand the political giant the ANC.
Presenting the distorted interpre-tation of the country’s state of affairsunder Zuma makes it easier for EFFwhile it is clamouring for politicalspace.
Dr Ramphele stresses economicvalues and concern for the welfareof others. She abhors corruption, thelethargy of the public service and po-litical thuggery.
Under her tutelage South Africawill be free of corruption, economicgrowthwillskyrocket, political actorswill be upstanding citizens, and we
will all live happily ever after.Ifsheiscorrect,thenCosatugener-
al secretary ZwelinzimaVavi’swarn-ing thatSouthAfricawas“headed fora predators state where powerful, corrupt and demagogic elite of politi-cal hyenas are increasingly using thestate to get rich” won’t materialise.
This analysis shows the EFF andAgang SA propaganda machinerypaint a completely black picture ofthe ruling party and interprets everyaction in terms of a paranoid fear ofSouth Africa becoming a wastelandor at worst a pariah state over-whelmed by corruption and othersocial ills.
There are three common traits ofparties founded on charismatic lead-ership. The most obvious is politicaladventurism of their leaders.
Political adventurism in realpoli-tik means entering a political spacewith delusion of grandeur withouthavingpaidattention to the realityonthe ground.
Secondly, theseparties arealwaysshort on concrete policies. Thirdly, the founding leaders remain at thehelm long after inaugural conferenc-es and the success or failure of the
party is always predicatedonthepo-litical fortunes of the founding lead-ers. Ramphelemay honestly want tocleanse our political landscape ofcorruption and political thuggery, but politically speaking, she is naiveto think with a few learned friendsliving in Midrand /Sandton, she canmastermind an overhaul of SA poli-tics.Shewillsoonlearnthatthepoliti-cal realm is no realm for saints.
Malemaontheotherhandisaper-petual political demagogue who willdo anything to cling to power forpersonal gain.
Inconclusion, sociologistssuggestthat charismatic parties are anathe-ma to democracy and usually lackideology basesastheyare“restingondevotion to the exceptional sanctity, heroismorexemplarycharacterofanindividual person”.
Both parties do stand a chance tohold at least a seat in theNationalAs-sembly come election 2014, but tocauseadenttotheANC’massiveelec-toral support is improbable.

Thumbsup toEdendale HospitalPUBLIC health facilities have been understandablycriticised many times in the past. Complaints haveranged from poor hygiene to impatient health careemployees. Shortageofmedicines, nursesanddoctorshas also been a common challenge in most of SouthAfrican health care facilities. However, my experience at Edendale Hospital hasenlightened me on the hard work that has been donein order to change the image of the hospital. My mother recently went for an operation on her leftknee as she is suffering from severe arthritis. The reception that we received from OOPD staff was of highquality, they are living Batho Pele principles and thisshould be commended. Keep up the good work!Admission officers and porters showed high level of
professionalism and willingness to serve people.Staff at 6B1 ward further ensured that patients getthe attention that they deserve and that patients aretreated with respect and dignity. May my experiencebe every person’s experience in this hospital. Congratulations should also go to hospital management teamfor their hardwork. I am confident that the NationalHealth Insurance policy will be successfully implemented, and that our people will receive high levelhealth care.

Another CD by awardwinning Intombi kaJehovaAS part of celebrating women’s monthIntombi KaJehova has released a 13track CD titled Sizonge’Ezulwini.
The 32 yearold, whose real nameis Xolile Ndlovu, is a bornandbredHammarsdale artist who currently resides in Pietermaritzburg. Ndlovu is notnew to the music industry as manywould remember her when she walkedaway with the Best Gospel Maskandiaward in 2010, courtesy of SABC GospelCrown Awards.
Speaking to Echo she said her newalbum, that has been available at themusic shops since July 24, is the samegospel maskandi genre music. “Whatis different about this one is that it accommodates everybody. It is a versatilealbum that also accommodates theyouth who enjoy dancing, she said.
“It was my wish that the CD wouldhave been released by the month of August while we celebrate Women’sMonth. This is dedicated to all the women. Some of the tracks pass a messageto stop women abuse. The first track“Unembeza” is asking why people have
lost conscience. Currently there are lotsof incidents that raise eyebrows whenyou hear or read about them in thenewspapers. “Elderly and young children are raped and some of them aremurdered. These incidents gave birth tothis track. People hear music in taxis, taxi ranks, at the shops and everywherethere is music. Pastors are spreading thewordbypreachingandI’mspreadingtheword by singing and combining it withinstruments,” said Ndlovu. Asked whatcould make people flock to music shopsto buy her album, she said the rhythmand versatility. “It relates to everyone, there is even a house track that can’t beignored when it plays. “With that one,I guarantee your feet won’t stop tapping. The other thing is that it was madewith passion. We are praising God andthat alone should be a reason goodenough to buy the CD. “I thank all theteam members for working hard on thisproject,” she said.
Those who want information aboutthe CD can call managing directorMondli Zondi on 072 234 8803.

JOHANNESBURG — “Bigger, betterand stronger,” was how Orlando Pi-rates coach Roger de Sa on TuesdaydescribedZamalek, comparing themwith fellow Egyptian club Al Ahly.
The Buccaneers stunned holdersAl Ahly in an African ChampionsLeague encounter in Egypt earlierthis month with an unprecedented3-0 away victory.
They were hoping to complete adouble over the Cairo duowhen theymeetZamalekatOrlandoStadiumonSaturday night.
“Al Ahly have built an illustriousrecord over the years,” said De Sa,“and theyare still a pretty formidablecombinationinspiteofourrecentvic-tory over them in Egypt.
“But our scouts in Egypt have toldus to expect even tougher opposition, against a physically bigger andstronger Zamalek combination, whocurrentlyhaveanedgeover their tra-ditional derby rivals.
“The videos I have been studyingof several ofZamalek’smatches, withmy technical staff, only seem to con-firm this assessment.”
De Sa intended to field a similarline up on Saturday to the one thatcaughtAlAhlyon thewrong footwithan early goal, and the Pirates coachhoped to begin the next match in thesame vein.
De Sa, however, said burly Zam-bian international striker CollinsMbesuma had only a 50% chance ofreporting fit after incurring an injuryin theMTN8 victory over SuperSport
United on Sunday. Also, tricky former Super-
Sport United striker Kermit Eras-mus remained cup-tied because hehad represented his former club in aCaf competition this year.
Unlike their Champions Leaguegame in Egypt, where only a handfulof spectators were allowed into thestadium—becauseofthepoliticalun-
res t thathad gripped thecountry—DeSawashoping for a vo-ciferous army of supporters to pro-vide vocal support for the Bucca-neers.

As the KZNChampions, Qhilika will now representthe province in the national finals in afew months’time. The 2013 KwaZulu Natal champions head coach, Ndoda Ngcobo said the
only secret that took his team that farin the event was hard work and goodleaders in the side. “We were well prepared and our players are hard workers. Also our goalkeeper, Thokozani Mthembu and captain Sanele Gaxa are qualityleaders, off and on the field.“They are also fighters and strongly be
lieve in team work,” said Ngcobo. The local coach, Nhlanhla Ngema said
Sukuma were just unlucky after trying allthe tricks available in soccer. “We werewell prepared for the event. I am proudof my players, we were just unlucky afterdishing out some good football duringthe entire tournament. “I mean wereachedthefinals,thefulltimescorewas22 and bowed 30 after the penaltyshootout. That alone speaks volumes,”said Ngema. Jerry Barnes

DESPITE an already crowd-ed fixture schedule, Rogerde Sa says Orlando Pirates

Pirates faceapunishingsched-ule which could stretch to 33matches before Christmas, if theymanage to make the MTN8 Tel-kom Knockout and CAF Champi-ons League finals.
“ToplayChiefs is alwaysgreat,it isagoodteamtoplayall thetime, itdoesnotmatterwhereoratwhatstage of the competition,” De Sasays on MTNFootball.
“It is always a great match tolook forward to, the fans look for-ward to it; thewholecountry looksforward to it so why not do it nowover two legs?
whole country comes to a stand-still, sowhynotbeapartof agamelike this?”
Both legs will be played nextweek, with the first legs onAugust20 and 21, and the return legs onAugust 24 and 25. Precise datesand venues are yet to be con-firmed.
De Sa says the two-legged sys-tem has its pros and cons.
“It sometimes becomes moredifficult than other times to playtwolegs.Youhavethechancetore-cover andcorrect things,” he says.
“If youdowell in the first gamethen you don’t want a second leg, butifyoudon’tdotoowell thenyoulooking forward to that second legto try to repair a few things.”
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefscoach Stuart Baxter is hoping thetwoupcomingmatches against ri-vals Orlando Pirates will producea lot of goals.
The 2013 MTN8 tournamentgot off to agreat start over thepastweekend with 15 goals scored in
thefourquarterfinalmatches, andAmakhosi’s coach tells Kick-Off.com he is hoping for more ofthe same.
“Ihopeso. Ihope therearea lotof goals,” he says.
Having said that,Baxter iswellaware that Derbies are closely-contested affairs and often fail tolive up to expectations.
“Derbiessometimesarenotthebest football games because of thehype, the expectations, thenervesand tension. But I hope the twogameswill reflect thequalityof theplayers fromboth teams,”hesays.
Baxter is also happy to play Pi-rates in the semis.
“Atthisstageofthecompetitionit didn’t matter who we got be-cause it could have been difficultwith any of the teams. But it is Pi-ratesanditaddssomethingextra– a little bit more spice.
