The 2008 survey gathered information about the extent to which institutions had

Developed and implemented policy and systems to improve their sustainability performance

For issues such as energy, waste, environment, travel institutions are focusing more general awareness raising campaigns than formal training, this is in contrast to health and safety and internal social policy issues

There is a lack of awareness about the requirements associated with some environmental related legislation and more than half of institutions have not considered environmental risks to their institution

Apart from LPG less than 10% institutions have taken forward any one particular type of alternative energy such as wind turbines, solar panels etc

Environmental issues have not been embraced consistently across the sector in the way that internal social policy has been addressed.

32 individual students attending events came from only nine institutions

Respondents attributed 135 sustainability improvements to their involvement in CaSPr.

The average “overall usefulness” from 21 events was a very high 4.4 out of a maximum of 5

• 7 strategic partners have changed the way they deliver their programmes/procedures to incorporate FHE sector

• Encouraged the SA to make environmental agenda number one priority with Principal

• Participated in Salix now £1million energy fund• Reduced waste by 9% and recycling up to 33%• Started dialogue on Corporate social responsibility• Developed green travel plan• Developed Sustainable Development Policy• Undertook biodiversity survey• Realised need for register of legislation• Advised senior management of issues for action
