What is an enterprise in the context of EA?

• Open Group defines "enterprise" as any collection of

organizations that has a common set of goals.

• For example, an enterprise could be a government

agency, a whole corporation, a division of a corporation, a

single department, or a chain of geographically distant

organizations linked together by common goals.

What is architecture is in the context of TOGAF?

• ISO/IEC 42010:2007 defines "architecture" as:

• "The fundamental organization of a system, embodied in its

components, their relationships to each other and the environment,

and the principles governing its design and evolution." TOGAF

embraces but does not strictly adhere to ISO/IEC 42010:2007

terminology.

• In TOGAF, "architecture" has two meanings depending

upon the context:

• A formal description of a system, or a detailed plan of the system

at component level to guide its implementation

• The structure of components, their inter-relationships, and the

principles and guidelines governing their design and evolution

Different types of architecture

• Business Architecture • defines the business strategy,

governance, organization, and key business processes

• Data Architecture • describes the structure of an

organization's logical and physical data assets and data management resources

• Application Architecture • provides a blueprint for the individual

application to be deployed, their interactions, and their relationships to the core business processes of the organization

• Technology Architecture • describes the logical software and

hardware capabilities that are required to support the deployment of business, data, and application services. This includes IT infrastructure, middleware, networks, communications, processing, standards

Objectives of TOGAF ADM phases

• Determine and establish

the Architecture Capability

• Develop a high-level aspirational vision of the

proposed enterprise architecture

• Obtain approval for a Statement of Architecture

Work

• Develop the Target Business or Data

or Application or Technology

Architecture

• Identify candidate Architecture

Roadmap components

• Generate the initial complete version of

the Architecture Roadmap

• Determine whether an incremental

approach is required

• Finalize the Architecture Roadmap and the

supporting Implementation and Migration Plan

• Ensure conformance with the Target

Architecture by implementation

projects

• Perform appropriate Architecture

Governance functions for the

solution

• Ensure that the architecture lifecycle is maintained

• Ensure that the Architecture Governance

Framework is executed

• Ensure that the enterprise Architecture

Capability meets current requirements

• Ensure that the Implementation and Migration Plan is

coordinated with the enterprise’s overall change

portfolio

• Manage architecture

requirements identified

during any execution of

the ADM cycle or a phase

• Ensure that relevant

architecture requirements

are available for use by

each phase

Enterprise Architecture vs IT

service management

• Service management

• A set of specialized organizational

capabilities for providing value to

customers in the form of services

• IT service management (ITSM)

• The implementation and

management of quality IT services

that meet the needs of the

business

TOGAF

• In TOGAF, "architecture" has

two meanings depending upon

the context:

• A formal description of a system,

TOGAF vs ITIL

• ITIL concentrates in IT services that support business services • Planning, developing, implementing, operating and improving

• IT services

• IT service management capability

• Architecture design is one of the service design aspects in ITIL • ITIL refers especially to Data/Information, Application and IT infrastructure

architectures but also to Service and Environmental architectures

• TOGAF concentrates in EA that supports the business goals • Planning, developing, governing the implementation and operation and

improving • Architecture that describes how the enterprise needs to operate to achieve the

business goals

• Architecture Capability

• TOGAF refers to IT Service Management and ITIL • When building Architecture Capability, in Implementation Governance and in

Architecture Change Management

• TOGAF does not go into details of ITSM coordination

TOGAF vs ITIL

• Both are based on best practices

• Both should be tailored for each organization

• Business alignment was added into the later versions of

both frameworks

• Both use Deming Cycle as the method of improvement

• Though it is not specifically mentioned in TOGAF ADM

• ITIL goes much deeper into guiding how continual improvement is

done

Different perspectives

• ITIL concentrates in managing IT services

• Business architecture is not in scope of ITIL

• Business architecture is one of the TOGAF architecture

domains

• Service transition and service operation are part of ITIL

service lifecycle

• Actual solution deployment and operation is not in scope of
