Flower Power

• How can we make a robot arm water a flower.

• This is the 1981 Armdroid 1.

Page 4: Droid Geometry

An isoceles triangle has two

equal sides.

Triangles

Page 5: Droid Geometry

Circles and AnglesA full 360˚ turn

returns the angle to 0˚

A 45˚ angle goes anti-clockwise

0˚ is at 3 o’clockAngles increase as

you go anti-clockwise

Page 6: Droid Geometry

Turtles all the way down

• We can simulate this in Python.• IDLE is a Python program editor.

Same measurements as

the Armdroid

Robot Kinematics: How far does it reach?

• Break the problem down into triangles.

• We know the arm lengths.

A right-angled triangle

origin x=0, y=0

Page 10: Droid Geometry

Triangle width & height

width of triangle base

(cosine)

height of triangle (sine)

Page 11: Droid Geometry

Analogue vs Digital• To work out the reach of the upper arm read out the width (cosine), w, in the plot for the angle (eg. a=45˚).

Python does this with the cos function.

Uses degrees radians.

Page 12: Droid Geometry

Adding the forearm

The angles a are the same

The widths w are the same.

a aw w

The triangle base is 2*w

Page 13: Droid Geometry

Give it some elbow

a

a

The turtle must turn through the exterior angle

-2*a

a

This is an interior angle.

-2*a is negative because the elbow

bends in the opposite way to the shoulder

Page 14: Droid Geometry

Test the results

Check the results by placing a dot at the predicted

position.

Page 15: Droid Geometry

Parallelograms

• The Armdroid has pulleys so that the forearm maintains its angle.

Inverse Kinematics

a

-a

• If we know where the flower is, how do we work out the angle a?

Page 17: Droid Geometry

260mm

Page 18: Droid Geometry

Analogue computer

To reverse the cosine, find a point where the measurement

is half the target.

cosine

Then read out the degrees.

Page 19: Droid Geometry

Going Digital

Use the inverse (arc) cosine to

calculate a

The flower is 260mm away

Place a dot at the target

Convert back from radians to degrees
