Lieutenant Governor’s Message

 Hello everyone! Beavers or not, I welcome you in reading my

first Division 8-A newsletter. I guess I should first introduce myself. My name is Martin Rabot and I am the Lieutenant Governor for New York District Key Club Division 8-A. I am a junior at Garden School in Jackson Heights, an avid soccer fan and player, a pretty bad guitarist and someone who loves to give back to his community. I have been involved in Key Club since 8th grade. I ran for Vice-President in 9th grade, won and then held the office for that year and the next, eventually leading to my victory in the Lieutenant Governor elections. I am more a proponent of actually getting out and doing work than just fundraising, but to each their own.

Well, enough about me, I want to know about you. Where do you go to school? Are you interested in service? Does your school have a Key Club? Do you have any questions? Let me know! I am always available for anything anyone needs to know, wants to know or wants to pester me with. I hope you enjoy this newsletter. If not, let me know what I can do to make it better!

As to the contents of this newsletter, I can say that it introduces the divisional board, gives information about both NYDKC”s and mine own goals for the year and, most importantly, highlights your successes. Enjoy!

Lieutenant Governor’s Introduction

 I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Martin Rabot and I am the

Lieutenant Governor for New York District Key Club Division 8-A. I am a junior at Garden School in Jackson Heights, an avid soccer fan and player, a pretty bad

guitarist and someone who loves to give back to his community. I have been involved in Key Club since 8th grade. I ran for Vice-President in 9th grade, won and then held the

office for that year and the next, eventually leading to my victory in the Lieutenant Governor elections. I am more a proponent of actually getting out and doing work

than just fundraising, but to each their own. For this year, I want to not only improve our methods of communication, but also what we are communicating about. I want club unity, divisional unity and district unity to be at a maximum. I want our division to be out-attending every other at events and really

showing how proud we are to be Key Clubbers. I hope everyone can help me achieve these goals and make the world a better place!

LTC 2013

The 65th Annual Leadership Training Conference was definitely one of the most anticipated events for the New Year. As a first timer going to LTC it was not what I expected, it was much more than that. The 3 – day experience overwhelmed my imagination of how well and organized it was. But it did also have a serious tone as well. During the three days we had many workshops to choose from. There were certain workshops mandatory for officers of course. We were learning many ideals about our jobs and what requirements are needed to fulfill our duty as an officer. Caucus was different out of all the sessions. It was strictly serious because its purpose was to decide on the next Executive Board. Needless to say the thought of being there signified how an officer has a significant role in the District. There were many more workshops where we would learn about charities and much more about the goals of our mighty district.

There were a total of 2 sessions each day and on the last day it was the closing brunch where we would all pack are belongings and depart. Throughout the sessions we would definitely have icebreakers or activities that made us meet new people. Laughing and fooling around with Garden School was probably one of the most hysterical things we did. We were constantly making fools out of our selves. The nights would end with a huge dance session consisting of most of the district. But the second dance would have to be the most memorial because it featured our past District Governor doing the Harlem Shake.

Overall, as a first timer going to LTC it was more than I expected. Even though it was a hefty price it was worth it. Especially since most of the guys from my home club stayed in one room playing video games and pulling pranks on each other throughout the night. I loved LTC and can’t wait to attend again the upcoming year.

Leadership  Training  Conference  (LTC)  2014  –  Everyone  mark  your  calendar  for  April  2nd  to  April  4th!  It’s  time  for  the  66th  annual  Leadership  Training  Conference  at  Wolf  Road  Holiday  Inn!  Everyone  should  be  attending,  so  start  saving  now!  It  will  likely  be  in  the  range  of  $300.  If  someone  doesn’t  know  what  LTC  is,  ask  someone  who  went  and  they’ll  tell  you  what  a  great  time  they  had.  I’m  sure  I  did!  

International Convention (ICON) 2013  As  I  understand,  no  one  aside  from  myself  is  attending  ICON  this  year.  Regardless,  it  promises  to  be  a  great  experience  for  those  who  are  going  and  I  hope  many  people  will  attend  next  year.  I  will  be  sure  to  put  up  a  review  as  soon  as  I  get  back  so  I  can  tell  everyone  first  hand  what  happened.  It  is  LTC  on  a  much,  much  larger  scale.  One  gets  to  interact  with  Key  Clubbers  from  around  the  country  and  world.  It  is  also  where  Lieutenant  Governors  learn  how  to  do  their  job,  but  don’t  worry!  Anyone  can  attend  ICON  and  learn  everything  about  anything.    

ELIMINATE Project With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.

Service Spotlight Articles Run for the Wild - By: Maahi Chowdhury

Run for the Wild was an experience like no other. Members and Officers met up at 5:30 a.m. to take the train all the way to the Bronx Zoo. I approached the entrance, tired and sluggish but I was instantly refreshed by the environment. In my view there was an excited crowd gearing to go run as the hosts pumped them up, families getting their face painted, an elephant mascot, and familiar faces waving over to me. Shortly after this observation, I went to the volunteer booth to go and assist in this event. Some of Divisional members had been volunteering since six, still I was just glad to help in whatever way I could. I believe the cause had driven so many people to raise awareness, and donate their time and money. Simply, the preservation of endangered species is imperative, standing up for the Elephants who have no voice was natural almost. After the race, and cleaning up Key Clubbers were able to view this perspective of preserving animal life with a free admission to the zoo. Here we saw many creatures that amazed us, and this just reinforced the entire event’s mission. But the one creature that amazed me the most on this day was us, humans. It reminded me of what we can do, that not everyone in the world is selfish, and that I can play a bigger part. The day was full of insights, laughter, and crowded trains but I would do it all over again. Which is why I highly recommend everyone to attend this event next year, if we are so fortunate to participate again.

Divisional Dance - By Will Vogel On April 26th 2013 Garden School's key club hosted a charity dance to benefit Imalive.Org. This website is a chat room where teenagers who are contemplating suicide can visit and talk to trained professionals about there problems. The dance had many other divisions from our New York district Key Club with Divisions 11, 8 and Garden's home division of division 8-A in attendance. The atmosphere of the dance was incredible people were dancing to music being played by both the DJ and a band formed by Garden School's Outgoing-President Mark Paraskevas '13 and Current President Alex Hall '14. But the night had more events to come. Two raffles were held to help the cause. The first raffle was to win a dance with certain members of the officers from our own Garden School Key Club and even our own Garden School Mascot the griffin. The second raffle was to win a flat screen television. These two raffles helped contribute to our total sum of $610.35. This amount of money that our charity dance raised also happens to be the most money ever raised for this charity. This charity dance that our Key Club held was a huge success and is something that we here at the Garden School look forward to continuing in the future.
