Barry and Cara Porter prepare to pull the wagon

with puppy, Duncan, in the parade while Mom,

Janice (right) and Robyn Porter make plans.

Robyn walked shelter dog, Houston, in the parade.

The Adoptable Pets sign made by Judy Laver attracted a great

deal of attention at the concession trailer.

Robyn and puppy, Duncan

Bob Hawk gained a whole bunch of admirers this week

when he installed an air conditioner in the concession trailer. As can be imagined, heat becomes a real issue when working in the small, uninsulated space when the temperatures rise. With four people working inside, the hot dog steamer operating—and parked usually in a sunny location—the heat can become unbearable. Those scheduled to work at the all-night ball tournament in LaHarpe on July 1 were very pleased when the tem-peratures remained at a tolerable level and they were able to keep the windows closed to the insects.

The Mad Melvin Carnival this coming Friday is being sponsored by the ACARF Fundraising Committee. Vol-unteers are still needed to work a two-hour shift between 4:00 pm—11:00 pm. Help is needed to man (or “woman”) the inflatables—monitoring the safety of children, taking tickets, timing length of ride, etc.,—as well as working at the ticket booth selling tickets, collecting information, etc. If you can spare a couple of hours for a doggone good cause, please call

The concession trailer has been busy! It was pulled to LaHarpe to celebrate LaHarpe Days on June 25 and worked by Jeanne Cloud, Ginny Hawk, Fran Clay, and Becky and Sam Aguirre. This was Sam’s first time to volunteer,

who very competently handled the grill. The trailer moved back to LaHarpe on July 1 to provide concessions for an all-night ball tourna-

ment. The first shift (5:00-11:30pm) was worked by Ginny Hawk and Art and Ona Chapman. The second shift (11:30pm—6:00 am) was worked by Jeanne Cloud and Fran Clay. They all enjoyed the air conditioner! The trailer will serve at Mad Melvin from 4:00

pm-11:00 pm and will then have a break until Moran Days in September, followed by the Bi-blesta in Humboldt and Farm/City Days in Iola.

The North Shore Animal League re-minds us to protect our pets this week-end. Keep them in a safe, protected area away from loud noise—inside, if

possible! Don’t forget to sign up for the 5k run or the 3k walk next weekend—join in the fun!

Duffy

Thanks for sharing

this newsletter with

others!

Duffy is a happy-go-lucky, scruffy little muffin. He has

that wonderful kind of face that can make anyone smile.

Duffy is a young Schnauzer mix, and the traits of that

breed are easy to see. His keen eyes make it obvious

that this is a very smart and attentive little dog. He also

has a Schnauzer’s friendliness and zest for life. Duffy

seems to like absolutely everyone he meets, whether ani-

mal or human. With his funky hairdo, lopsided puppy grin,

and joyful temperament, Duffy is a total charmer.
