You ask the Senior questionWe find the Savvy answer
How to Save Money by DonatingYour Body to Science
Dear Savvy Senior,What can you tell me about body donations? With lit-
tle money to spare, I’m looking for a cheap way to dieand have heard that donating my body to science isfree, not to mention it benefits medical research.
Old and Poor Dear OldIf you’re looking to eliminate your final farewell expense
and help advance medical research, donating your body toscience is a great option to consider. Here’s what youshould know.
Body DonationsEach year, an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Americans
donate their whole body, after death, to medical facilitiesthroughout the country to be used in medical research pro-jects, anatomy lessons and surgical practice.
After using your body, these facilities will then providefree cremation – which typically costs $600 to $3,000 – andwill either bury or scatter your ashes in a local cemetery orreturn them to your family, usually within a year or two.
Here are a few other tidbits you need to know to helpyou decide on whether whole-body donation is right foryou.
• Organ donors excluded: Most programs require thatyou donate your whole body in its entirety. So if you wantto be an organ donor, you won’t qualify to be a whole bodydonor too. You’ll have to choose.
• Not all bodies are accepted: If, for example, your bodyhas been badly damaged in a care accident or if you’remorbidly obese, you many not qualify.
• Body transporting is covered: Most programs will payto transport your body to their facility unless your bodymust be moved from out of state.
• No special requests: Most programs won’t allow you todonate your body for a specific purpose – you give themthe body and they decide how to use it.
• Funeral services are not covered: Most programs willallow your family to conduct any final services they wishbefore taking custody of your body, but they won’t pay forit.
• Your family won’t be paid: Federal law prohibits buyingbodies.
What To DoIf you do decide you want to donate your body, it’s best
to make arrangements in advance with a body donationprogram in your area. Most programs are offered by univer-sity-affiliated medical schools. To find one near you, theUniversity of Florida maintains a list of U.S. programs andtheir contact information atwww.med.ufl.edu/anatbd/usprograms.html.
In addition to the medical schools, there are also a num-ber of private organizations like Anatomy Gifts Registry(anatomicgift.com), BioGift (biogift.org) and Science Care(sciencecare.com) that accept whole body donations too.
If you don’t have internet access, you can get help overthe phone by calling the National Family Services Deskwhich operates a free body donation referral service duringbusiness hours at 800-727-0700.
Once you locate a program in your area, call and askthem to mail you an information/registration packet that willexplain exactly how their program works.
To sign up, you’ll simply need to fill out a couple offorms. But, you can always change your mind by revokingyour authorization in writing.
After you have made arrangements, you then need totell your family members so they will know what to do andwho to contact after your death. It’s also a good idea to tellyour doctor and put your wishes in writing in your advancedirectives. These are legal documents that include a med-ical power of attorney and living will that spell out yourwishes regarding your end-of-life medical treatment whenyou can no longer make decisions for yourself.
If you don’t have an advance directive, go to caringin-fo.org or call 800-658-8898 where you can get free state-specific forms with instructions to help you make one.
Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. JimMiller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of“The Savvy Senior” book.

MANTORVILLE TOWNSHIPSNOW REMOVAL POLICY
PURPOSE: To give the citizens of Mantorville Township a realisticexpectation of the snow and ice removal services that will be providedduring the winter season. This policy is based on a similar policy devel-oped by the Dodge County Highway Department.
GOAL: The general goal of the Township is to keep the townshiproads passable during the most heavily traveled periods of the week.Service is prioritized by traffic volume and the most logical routing pat-tern.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES: The first priority is to make ALLroads passable. Once all roads are passable, the lanes will then bewidened, and abrasive/chemical mixtures applied if necessary. Finally, additional clean up will be done, if time allows before the next snow.
Mantorville Township has only one operator, one snow plow, and onetruck. Operator duty shifts must be limited to 12 hours per day for safetyreasons, therefore in no case is 24 hour a day coverage provided. Icingbridges or snow drifting on roads are an expected aspect of winter traveland generally are not adequate justification to dispatch the snow plow.Hours of operation will be determined by weather conditions and/or traf-fic volume. *The township will not be responsible for vehicles parked ontownship roads during snow removal emergencies.
Week-ends and holidays will receive a reduced level of service, due tolower traffic volume and limited resources available. (We do not haveaccess to sand/salt if our supplier is not open.) If the weather service hasrecommended no travel, it is assumed there will be low traffic volume, resulting in a lower level of service. Operations will be halted when con-ditions are too hazardous, or if reasonable accomplishments cannot bemade.
State statute 169.42 requires that NO snow be pushed onto townshipright of way.
EMERGENCY CALLS: Snow plows will not be dispatched at nighton most roads except for true emergency calls such as assisting, firedepartments, ambulance crews, or searching for known strandedmotorists. M: 47-48c

Crop acreage reporting dates changefor forage crops in Minnesota
Minnesota USDA-Farm ServiceAgency (FSA) State ExecutiveDirector Linda Hennen hasannounced that some crop acreagereporting dates have been changedto reduce confusion and eventuallybe the same as those establishedfor crop insurance. This change
applies to all forage crops, regardless of crop insurance cov-erage.
Producers that have perennial forage crops must file a 2013acreage certification by November 15. Due to the timing ofthis change for the 2013 crop year, late-file fees and associat-ed spot checks will be waived for these crops to accommo-date producers that come in after November 15 through July15, 2013.
“FSA and the USDA-Risk Management Agency (RMA)have been working to make crop acreage reporting dates con-sistent for all farm and insurance programs,” SED Hennenstated. “It is important for producers of forage crops inMinnesota to be aware of this change,” said Hennen.
For more information regarding crop acreage reporting deadlines, producers are encouraged to contact their
local FSA office or visit http://www.fsa.usda.gov/
