MRA looking for new membersMantorville has been blessed with a group of people from the area who for the last 50 or
so years have been dedicated to the work of preserving and restoring some of the historicbuildings and sites in and near Mantorville. A number of area people, including Tom andHelen Ferry, who still live in Mantorville, were part of the group who proposed the formingof the Mantorville Restoration Association (MRA) in 1963. The MRA owns and manages anumber of properties in town, including the Mantorville Opera House, the Restoration House, the Log House, the limestone Carriage House and the Greek Revival House. Each of theproperties was purchased and restored with money raised by the MRA and donations frompeople interested in Mantorville’s history. The restoration continues on the properties eachyear with the help of MRA members and other volunteers.
The 1856 Restoration House is open for touring from May through mid October and forthe last couple of years, several people have decorated it for Christmas and it has been openfour weekends in December. The Log House was built in the 1850’s and is just east of theRestoration House; it too is open for tours in summer months, and has been a part of theHalloween Haunted House tour for a number of years which also includes the original jail thatis located in the limestone basement of the Restoration House. The Mantorville Opera Househas featured the Mantorville Theatre Group for many years with their summer productions ofmelodramas, fall mystery theatre dinner and winter and spring plays during the rest of theyear. Also a number of gospel music groups perform there each year, the quilt show duringMarigold Days is held there along with the Welcome Center’s Merry Hour in November andof course, Santa Claus was there for the children during Old Fashion Christmas, the firstSaturday in December. There have also been weddings and receptions held at the OperaHouse and KM High School Theatre group performs their one act plays there.
Are you interested in history? Come to the MRA’s Annual Meeting, Tuesday, January 8 at7:00 P.M. at the historical Opera House and consider becoming a member. Membership isopen to everyone (not just those who live in or near Mantorville). MRA members wouldenjoy meeting you and invite you to help preserve Mantorville’s wonderful history!

The past few years have been full ofchanges for Teresa Bahr, owner/direc-tor of Early Advantage DevelopmentalChild Care Center. Teresa graduatedfrom Kasson-Mantorville High Schooland attended college in Michigan toearn a degree in elementary educa-tion. She taught in various child careand school settings in Michigan for 11years and then began to feel the pullto return to Minnesota. The firstchange occurred three years ago whenshe moved back and established an in-home day care in Rochester, her first
step toward her goal of owning a child care center. Another changetook place in July 2011 when she married Todd Bahr. Last March,Teresa and Todd purchased Amazing Kids Child Care. She, alongwith many family members, spent weekends remodeling the centerwhile keeping it open during the week. In October of this yearTeresa announced the new name of the center, Early AdvantageDevelopmental Child Care Center. And on top of all that she gavebirth to her son almost six months ago adding one more change toher busy life. Teresa is also stepmom to a seven year old daughter.
The name of the center reflects Teresa's priorities for the busi-ness. Referring back to her years as an elementary teacher sheknows the importance of learning in the early years and the relationto success not only in school, but in life. "I wanted a center that pro-vided developmentally appropriate learning experiences for chil-dren. I wanted to make sure the children would be engaged in thelearning process", states Teresa. Lesson plans, curriculum, assess-ments, newsletters, and conferences are used to keep learningfocused and communication with parents open. "Some parents ofpre-schoolers do bring their children a couple days a week to takepart in the learning opportunities we have here", Teresa shares. "Ibelieve that learning for young children is natural and the environ-ment should support that", Teresa continues.
The center offers four programs for children ages six weeks to 12years; one each for infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers and school age.Children may attend on a full time, part time or drop-in basis withflexible scheduling offered. Before and after school care is alsoavailable. Early Advantage is licensed for a total of 81 children andis open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thecenter is located at 507 Frontage Road Northeast in Byron, east ofByron Lanes. The whole building is devoted to the center ensuringthere is plenty of space indoors and out for the different age
groups. Teresa spent many years preparing for her ultimate dream of
owning a childcare center. Her goal now is to offer the communitygood, reliable child care plus the important extras. Being a businessowner she knows it will be important to stay up to date withimprovements and always keep an eye to how to do things better. One upcoming improvement will be a fingerprint identification sys-tem for parents/family members to use when picking up their chil-dren. She is also planning the implementation of management soft-ware that will aid in scheduling and ease the payment process forparents along with other helpful management aids.
Teresa welcomes change and is eager to help the center grow.Currently openings are available and Teresa encourages people tocall to learn more about the center and schedule a tour. She is readyto invest her experience and education into Early Advantage toprovide children with an environment that promotes their physical, cognitive, emotional, social, verbal, motor and sensory growth. Tolearn more call 775-2636. Their website is currently under construc-tion but will also be a great place to find more information,www.EarlyAdvantageDCC.com.
