By the time you read this little gardening article, Wimbledon is long over; ‘Bloom’, in itsthird year and in all its splendour, took place in the Phoenix Park; ‘Bloom’ for me was anabsolute treat. I loved seeing all types of people: the really old, middle-aged, young andeven toddlers in prams, All clutching some little treasure: some special ‘something’- theirfaces lit up with sheer delight and the promise of a home, love and T.L.C. (tender lovingcare). I watched a group of five ladies, decked out in all their summer regalia - it was aroasting hot day - literally sunken down with all sorts of colourful and dazzling livingplants, trees, shrubs and garden gadgets of all shapes and sizes. Even the traffic was at astandstill in order to let these people cross the road with their ‘moving gardens’ pass bysafely. It was truly a glorious and most promising sight.Isn’t it turning out to be quite an exciting summer? Sometimes, sunny humid days, otherswarm then showery and, of course, the odd and spasmodic deluge of rain which is of coursewhat all our Dalkey gardens require now and then, especially for new planting. So, now is the time, our time, to enjoy our Dalkey gardens. Don’t have regrets. Remember, soon we will be welcoming our oncoming months of October, November, etc. So, get outthere, sit in the shade for a while, read your newspapers, listen to the birds, dream, plan

your household chores/business affairs, admireyour surroundings, heal your sick souls, woundedspirit, enjoy a family Barbeque, write those long-promised letters, enjoy a cup of herbal tea, agooseberry, red currant, read your favouritemagazine, enjoy a cool summer drink with someof your darling freshly-picked herbs such asapple or pineapple mint; or literally just ‘BE’.Our gardens in August take on a new suit ofclothes so to speak. Remember every day thatpasses by is a ‘bite’ out of our summer. Ourflower borders gain an intensity of new richnessof colour, dominated by oranges, burgundies,

purples and gold. I think Lavender should always be planted where it can be brushedagainst in passing, for simply the pure pleasure of it.Had enough of those tired packaged pillow-like bags of salad? Surely, it must be time to trygrowing your own. Even in a tiny space, it’s easy to raise a variedselection of tasty leaves. There is no flavour to equal the taste ofyour own freshly-picked herbs and edible berries, - still sometimes, warm from the garden. Just add your sumptuous berries, a littlecream, crème fraiche or Greek yoghurt and you have the mostclassic dessert. Even if you have only a balcony, a small backyard oreven a roof garden, get out there and have a go at growing somevegetable or fruit. If you’re stuck for space, try growing veggies inany large container, or an old dustbin, large bucket, old pot(remember drainage holes!), even those restaurant cateringcontainers for mayonnaise, olives, ketchup, etc. will do or, ofcourse, a grow bag which you can buy cheaply in any D.I.Y. store.Try maybe rocket (my favourite herb), scallions, chives, parsley,

cherry tomatoes, lemon verbena, and lemon balm. Anyone and everyone can grow these. Two years ago we grew the most amazing chillies. These fiery fruits make splendidornamental plants both indoors and out and certainly bring some drama to your dinner platetoo. I find, although, they grow outside in most soils, they have always done best for me inpots and I generally only put them outside when the fruit is forming - if at all! If you find thatyou have too many, simply share especially now with our recessionary about or simply freezeor dry them, either whole or chopped up. On this note, how about some ‘weeds’ on yourmenu? Some of these garden herbs are the ‘in thing’ and are considered to be the newfashionable ingredient in certain ‘posh’, zany restaurants. So, the likes of ground elder, nettles, dandelions and sow thistle - chickweed too, is officially chic when served with soysauce, and so on. I have a friend who tells me she almost lives on sorrel soup. I have heard ofsomeone else who loves to eat dandelion leaves with balsamic vinegar, rock salt and chives.I was walking little ‘Precious’ - our Ruby King Charles, now ten months old puppy recentlyone evening along Sorrento Road leading towards Victoria Road. He has an absolute ‘thing’about falling, whirling crispy leaves and, truthfully, only for my reliable strong harness andlead that I bought from dear Anna in our local pet shop, I would be lost as he has almostbolted on me a few times. Anyway, on approaching I thought for a minute that I might havebeen in sunny Biarritz, San Sebastian or some gorgeous little Continental enclave. There, seated safely off the road was a group of happy local residents and their families sitting outenjoying each other’s company with brightly-coloured picnic decked benches and chairsand, of course, munching into some of their delicious home produce. Each table/bench wasadorned with brightly-coloured flower arrangements which, apparently, the childrenthemselves did using their own flowers from their own gardens. Good on all of you andwell done! These little arrangements certainly added a touch of colour, romance andelegance to the occasion. I think one of the residents there told me that they have such ‘anoccasion’ every second year in the summer. What a nice, neighbourly idea. I was offered adelicious cool glass of white wine and a plate of the most tempting desserts of which, I saya special ‘thank you’ to each of you.My favourite way of arranging flowers is to take a single type of flower, cut the stems quiteshort and arrange them en masse on their own in some very simple container. It’s such astylish way of displaying wildflowers, such as buttercups, bluebells, cobaeas, (‘Cup-and-Saucer’ Climber) poppies, nasturtiums, Alchemilla Mollise (Ladys’Mantle), lavender, Alliums, etc. I just bunch them together with arubber band, next (if I’m in the mood!) sear the stems in boilingwater to make them last longer and stand them in a vase, old-stylebottle, whatever! Finally, I cut the rubber band and loosen thestructure a bit so that the flowers give the appearance of ease andgrace.

TIPS1. If you are planning to go on holidays during this month of August,

give everything a thorough soaking in order to wet the soil deepdown. Try and hoe the surface of all beds in order to control theweeds. Mulch will help preserve soil moisture too but those weedswill re-appear, later!

2. Move containers into the shade and water well.3. Cut back herbs that are starting to flower. If they go to seed, they

Cut and ‘come-again’salad leaves. A weekor two later the cut

stumps will start to re-sprout.

“We love August for.....being the month we give up and go on holiday. No, no, no: thisis the month when the good gardener pulls something spectacular out of the hat. It’seasy to be beautiful when blessed with the supple limbs of youth, but much moreinteresting to produce something truly stunning as, all around us, petals droop andleaves sag.”

The letter from the Australian tourist Rowan Campbell (Newsletter 387, Vol 15) serves to highlightthe appaling state of our traffic policies and practices, a few of which might act as a warning to othervisitors to Dalkey:• Private mint that goes under the name of ‘clamping’• Clamping ‘fee’ rather than parking fine where there is no obstruction or danger to the public (as in

Mr. Campbell’s case) in a pay-parking area• The blatant overlooking by traffic wardens, and clampers, of obstructive double yellow line

unloading and private car parking near certain commercial premises• The proliferation of pay parking (where motorists used to park half up on over-wide pavements)

which has turned former two-way streets into effectively hazardous on-car-at-a- time nightmares• Pay parking bays so close to road junctions that any parked van/lorry totally obscures the view of

oncoming traffic• Pay parking bays so small that getting a wheelchair/baby carriage out of the boot is a major

undertaking (and no, there aren’t many disabled parking bays!)• Widening of pavements (with consequent loss of roadway) to accommodate five baby carriages in

line abreast, where few people walk, and lack of pavement where they do• A totally unnecessary number of speed bumps on some roads• Weird little ‘roundabouts’ which are too small for effective direction signalling, and are thus an

accident waiting to happenAND FOR THOSE VISITORS WHO WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE CITY:• Cars tail-backed everywhere to accommodate bus lanes which are mostly empty• A LUAS system running on different gauges, in just two directions, taking up even more road space,

after years of roadworks, when an electric trolley bus system could have been just as pollution-free,have involved little or no digging up, could have been installed almost everywhere, and could haveused the same bus lanes that are currently under-utilised.

AND FOR THE HAPPY WANDERER IN IRELAND:• Pay parking notices permanently obscured by foliage• Traffic wardens who will fold up a penalty notice so small that it does not deter other motorists who

could be caught out on a weekend and small enough not to be seen by the driver and thereforeeasily whipped off on the wipers - a nice double earner here!

• A 60 km/h speed limit on the road-worked M50, a limit which is completely unnecessary on a dualcarriageway, especially on the made-up sections, and which virtually everyone, including Gardaí,has little choice but to ignore

• Totally arbitrary speed-limits on dual carriageways (e.g. 100 Kmh on long straight country roadsand 120 Kmh when the roads start to bend)

• Gardaí lurking behind billboards/signposts at the bottom of long sweeping (dual carriageway) hillswhich are perfectly safe to drive at 120 Kmh but which at 100 Kmh will catch the maximumnumber of motorists who find it very difficult to go for kilometres downhill in third gear or whileconstantly braking

• Much signposting designed solely for those who know the route well (e.g. country roadssignposted to “Ballyheck” until the driver comes to a T-junction - without a sign)

• Left fork signs on the major carriageways which are in relatively small letters and placed well beyondthe turning point for the fork which the visiting motorist was supposed to take

• Weird, no-reason, white zebra-lines which force the motorist out into the main traffic stream beforeallowing s/he back in to take a left turn

Altogether shame-making, as Mr. Campbell found to his cost, and as many visitors to Irelanddiscover every day. We surely deserve traffic managers who don’t leave their common-sense behindwhen assuming office. I am quite certain other readers could add to the above list.

Yours resignedly,A DALKEY DRIVER

We askresidents to be diligent about litter. We have thanked DLRCC for ensuring that central Dalkey was free from election postersand for their prompt removal.A Grafitti Training session, organised by DLRCC at the Peoples’ Park, couldunfortunately not be attended by any of our volunteers, but we do have Grafitti removal kitsand try to keep some control of the situation. One of our volunteers noted that the bin located at the top of the steps from Whiterock Beachwas not being emptied and consequently rubbish was widespread. He reported this to theHealth Authority as a health hazard and the area was promptly cleared. Coliemore Harbourwas noted to be in a similar state and DLRCC was informed. A bin in now in situ on the pier.Dillon’s Park is a popular meeting place and we implore the users to bring their rubbishhome. Cans are thrown down onto rocks that are too dangerous for our volunteers to retrieve.A cheque was gratefully received from Dalkey Eurospar for €500 as a gesture of goodwill. The managers of Eurospar and our committee members have established a good workingrelationship. The façade of Gemma’s and the tidiness of the car park have been improved.

PLANTING PROJECTS• Harold Boys School has planted a flowerbed at the school• Loreto schoolgirls have planted the border at the rear of the car park• The small triangle on land on Ormeau Drive has been cleared and planted by DLRCC

Parks Department• I hope everyone is proud of central Dalkey bedecked with flowers

LATEST FROM THE SUTTON TO SANDYCOVE (S2S) PROJECT ❖❖

STAND AND DELIVER ❖❖

Having succeeded over two years ago in getting a government commitment to proceed withthe S2S project, we decided to stand down from the campaign and allow the authorities toget on with it. Some good progress has been made in the intervening period, which you cancheck out by logging into www.s2s.ie.However, the recent publication of the Draft Development Plan 2010-2015 by DunLaoghaire Rathdown County Council shows a lack of commitment to the project which isvery disappointing. While we all recognise that it will be difficult to finance the full projectin the current economic circumstances, the fact is that work could continue on developingthe detailed design and some small sections of the route. There are several other projectsproposed in the plan which would be costly, but this has not precluded their inclusion. Theonly reference to the S2S Project is in section 12.1.12 where it says that the Council merely“supports” the proposal as a long term objective. The full Draft Plan can be found on theDLRCC Website at http://www.dlrcoco.ie/planning/DevPlan2010_2016/index.html

“MAMIE CADDEN - BACKSTREET ABORTIONIST” by Ray Kavanagh,Published by Mercier Press

On Christmas Eve 1956 Mamie Camden was sentenced to death for the death of HelenO’Reilly on whom she had performed an unsuccessful illegal abortion earlier that year andthis excellent book by Ray Kavanagh provides the reader with a comprehensive biographyof this infamous woman and separates the truth from the fiction/folklore surrounding her.Cadden was not alone in this activity as in Dublin’s 1930s; there was an extensive discreetpregnancy termination service provided by a number of medical practitioners and others ata time when contraception was not available with the authorities happy to turn a blind eyeto these activities until the 1940s where there was crack down on these practitioners withmany being subsequently brought before the courts and sentenced to terms ofimprisonment. Cadden was one of those who served a term of imprisonment for thisactivity and on her release resumed providing an abortion service, advertising her servicesdiscreetly and covertly, and although her reputation for providing this type of service wasknown all over Dublin, the authorities were unable to catch her until Helen O’Reilly died ather hands. Found guilty, Cadden was sentenced to death but later reprieved and spent herfinal years in the Central Mental Hospital and is buried in the hospital’s mass grave inDeansgrange Cemetery. A truly fascinating and engrossing biography of this infamouswoman.

When is a billion not a billion? When it’s today’s billion. Some people may recall thosewonderful books produced by Arthur Mee, originally in 1908 and republished up to 1964,The Children’s Encylopaedias. There was a section in each, containing random questionsabout Life, Civilisation and the Universe, with the answers provided for curious enquirers. One of those questions was: “What is a billion?” The author went on to explain that it wasone million million. Logically, of course, because Bi- symbolises two. In this case, twomillions multiplied together, which it had been from the time that man learnt to count inlarge numbers. A billion is defined as such, in a dictionary published as recently as 2002. However, acertain person or persons, believed to be American, decided that this was no longer to be,and a new version of the number was adopted which spread rapidly over the world’sfinancial markets and then into common media use. How newsreaders love to emphasisethe word! - as though to shock us with the enormity of the situation. If a sample of the public was to be asked what a billion is, how many would actually know?Maybe not as many as one would think, such is the prevalent use of billions and trillions. One can also question the value of the latter as a result. Why, one wonders, was it necessaryto change the billion to something less than it really is?Could it be that it was designed to alienate the common man from those in the know, toconfuse him or her, and to make them less able to come to terms with contemporary life bythe use of overwhelming numbers? That may be too strong a conspiracy theory, but nevertheless, it would be nice to know whya billion is no longer a billion, but a thousand million masquerading under that name.

Pedro Angulo the Chairman of NW opened the meeting and welcomed all with a shortintroductory talk about the advantages of a NW scheme in the local community.

Mark Turner the Treasurer gave a report on the financial statement for 2008/2009. FDistrict has been involved with the supply of alarms to the elderly under the MonitoredSocial Alarms scheme financed by the Dept. of Social, Community & Family Affairs.

The Gardai working with the local Authority and Planners can help in the design phase ofestates to avoid sprawling areas that generate anti-social behaviour and lead to incidents ofcrime. Underground car parks should be well lit with CCTV cameras strategically placed.Mistakes can prove to be costly and any future plans for schools, community halls, and etc.contact should be made with the Community Garda for advice.

NATURE CORNER – Michael Ryan ❖❖

Mixed fortunes for Dalkey’s birdlife thisyear. For the first year since ourinvolvement in the tern colony at DalkeySound no birds produced chicks. Theyhad been slow to begin nesting but byearly June there were about twenty nestsof mostly Common and a few pairs ofArctic Terns as well as one pair of themuch rarer Roseate Tern on MaidensRock (the outcrop of rock furthest leftfrom Dalkey Island) while at least sixpairs of Arctic Terns nested behind thefence on Lamb (the western part ofDalkey Island separated at low tide).

The Roseates terns had occupied a nestbox we’d put out a few weeks before and a bird wasalways visible sitting in it. The Roseate was sitting on two eggs and although the colonyhad smaller numbers then previous years, all was looking well. We were having that heatspell in the first week in June. A few days of sunshine and you begin to think it’ll lastforever but weatherman had said that it was going to end by the weekend and gradually theforecast started getting direr until they were forecasting North Easterly gales. Northeasterly seas are the only ones that affect the terns on Maidens since the seas will crashright over the rock and far too many times in the past all the nests and many tern chickshave been washed off. This time, to add to the threat, there was going to be a full moon atthe weekend so the tides would be at their highest. The colony of Little Terns on the beach in Newcastle in Wicklow also suffers from the samestorms and three quarters of the nests down there were destroyed despite valiant efforts bythe wardens who even took clutches of eggs and put them on hot water bottles to keep themwarm while the storm blew. Back in Dalkey our worst fears came through and after a day ofhigh winds, crashing waves and torrential rain all the birds were gone off Maidens Rock. This time unlike previous years when they’d been washed off but then came back andnested again there was no sign of them returning. Our hopes were raised about three weekslater when a number of birds were back mating on the rock and looking like they might trynesting again but they came and went and didn’t stay on nests and by mid July any chanceof them successfully nesting and rearing chicks were negligible.Meanwhile the half dozen Arctic tern nests on Lamb Island had survived the bad weatherand for a while it looked like they might succeed but whether it was disturbance by goats orpeople walking across the island they too deserted their nests in late June. Since we’dbecame involved in the Tern project 14 years ago this will be our first season with no chickshatched which is sad and very disappointing to all involved.Closer to home this spring was the first I can remember when we didn’t have a Song Thrushsinging near our garden, proclaiming a territory. Although lots of Blackbirds were singingthe evenings weren’t the same without the Song Thrush, one of our most melodic songstersand often the last bird singing on long summer evenings. Song Thrushes are in declineeverywhere especially in the UK and Ireland. No one is exactly sure why their numbers aredropping although their habit of nesting low in bushes and mostly feeding on the groundmakes them very vulnerable to predation by cats. But it wasn’t all bad news. As I mentioned last month the ravens nested and successfully

reared 3 or 4 chicks. We were delighted in June to comeupon a family of Jays, the juveniles evidently recentlyhaving left the nest since one was hopping around barelyable to fly. Although I’d seen Jays making a nest last yearon Killiney Hill I didn’t see any young then so this couldpossibly be the first year Jays have become breeding birdson the hill, a very welcome addition. There were at least six Blackcaps singing and holdingterritory on Dalkey and Killiney hill and at least one pairfledged young.Bullfinches as a species are doing well in Ireland andthere’s a good healthy population on the hills. Verycolourful but quite secretive, these delightful little birds aremore often noticed by their call, a single plaintive note. Wecame upon at least two family groups this year and hadseen adults everywhere, once feeding on elm tree seeds. We’d seen one pair of Treecreepers nesting, conveniently

for us to watch, in a little hole in a tree just beside the path. Later in the summer we cameupon another busy family of Treecreepers, a parent bird bringing food to the young and aswe watched a young bird landed on the opposite side of a small tree my companion wasleaning against, literally a few inches away from her head.Linnets were singing from a few different spots this year, one above the gorse above VicoRoad and another one near the Obelisk but I don’t know if they nested successfully.Goldcrests, our smallest bird, are very common but again not so easily seen. In early July Inearly stood on one in our garden where it was crouched motionless on a path. I’d thoughtat first it was a leaf or little clump of moss and nearly kicked it out of the way then saw itwas a juvenile Goldcrest. Not long out of the nest it hadn’t developed the little crown stripethat gives them their name and the poor little thing had evidently got separated from it’sfamily. We kept it in a box for a while till we were sure it could fly and wasn’t in shock thenplaced it in a conifer hedge where Goldcrests often move through. We hoped it might makecontact with its family again but didn’t hold out too much hope.I’d been getting worried about our Sparrowhawks. Almost every year two pairs nest andsuccessful breeding is confirmed, nearly always in the second week in July, by the sharpcalls of young sparrowhawks telling their parents where they are and telling mum and dadthey could do with some food. Sure enough on the 12th July there was one calling and Ihope I’ll be hearing a lot more calls. At time of writing I’m worried about the other pair. They’d nested near a area thatsubsequently became very busy with teenagers constantly hanging out nearby and I’mafraid the disturbance might have scared off the birds. But I’ll live in hope since, as Imentioned before, a pair used nest on Killiney hill on a tree a few feet from a path and theystill managed to raise young. On humid windless days in July and August you might notice the sky filled with birdswhirling around and making short swooping dives. These are Black Headed Gulls andthey’re feeding on ants, young female ‘princesses’ and male ants which have just taken tothe air. The female ants have set off to start new nests and when they’ve settled into asuitable place they’ll remove their own wings and start laying eggs. That’s if the birds don’tget them first! The rocks near the top of Dalkey hill and near the Obelisk on Killiney hill are often a goodplace to see Grayling butterflies. Although not the most colourful of butterflies it has a

Two years ago Loreto Primary School, Dalkey, decided the time had come to get serious. Itwas time to give the environment a break and put in a little backbreaking effort and timeinto living the Green experience. The prize if the students achieved their goal was a Green Flag for the school but the realachievement was a litter free school yard pleasing on the eye with plants and vegetables toprove that effort equals results. Teachers, parents and pupils worked together on the Green Committee. The school yardwas whipped into shape, flower beds were tended and planted and students got on board theGreen campaign. Even better, they brought the message to their communities and into thehomes. Result - an environmentally aware Loreto Primary School, a cleaner communityand parents taking advice from their children to reduce reuse and recycle. The prize arrivedas well when local TD and Minister for Children Barry Andrews arrived at the school toraise the Green Flag. Now the work continues to keep the flag flying and spread the word.

fascinating method of camouflaging itself from predators. When it lands on granite rocksits prominent underwings almost match the patterns of the rock. Then it tucks in itsforewing. Then, so that it doesn’t cast a shadow it gradually leans over until it’s almost flatagainst the rock. At that stage it’s practically invisible. Graylings will be on the wing inAugust and sunny days in early autumn.www.irishbutterflies.com is a very good websitefor details on Irish butterflies and where and when to see them.

Oh! How Television (and Radio) has changed over the years........

In June’s issue I mentioned the latest HD receiver from Panasonic (modelNo. DMR-BS850). I managed to borrow one of these receivers for theduration of Wimbledon, and recorded most of the tournament in HD fromthe BBC... Well on playback the picture quality was really stunning (thebest example of HD I have seen to date). After going through some of thegames I was then able to select the ones I wanted and burn them straightonto a DVD (using the built in DVD burner / player). There’s no doubt thisreceiver is in a class of its own . . . . the receiver (excluding satellite dishetc.) will retail at app. €1000 !!
