W elcome to the sixth book festival in Dalkey – the festival that combines brilliant global names with a wonderful local vibe. Because of the success of last year’s Festival Marquee in the

Secret Garden, we’ve added a beautiful Seafront Marquee in the breathtaking Dillon’s Park opposite Dalkey Island. As you know, we’ve always believed that the mind that loves great literature also loves great music, film, economics and science. It’s also a mind that is fascinated by trends in technology, politics and innovation.

So this year our guests include writers, poets, directors, psychiatrists, scientists, economists, comedians, all sorts.

Come listen to TED superstars: writer and rock chick Amanda Palmer and the unbelievably talented economist, Dan Ariely, whose combined TED talks have been seen by over 10 million people.

We have America’s finest, the inimitable PJ O’Rourke, talking politics, society and looking forward to the Presidential election. Gabriel Byrne will be here reflecting on Yeats, acting and whether TV is trouncing Hollywood. If science and the brain is your thing, what about Professor Ian Robertson on the mind of megalomaniacs or the man who holds the Guinness Book of Records record for memory, Eran Katz on how you can improve your own brain?

One author not to miss is the best-selling female writer in the Muslim world, Turkey’s Elif Shafak and while you are here, you’d be mad not to catch the hottest property in North American writing, Patrick De Witt. June 13th is the 150th anniversary of WB Yeats’ birthday and we’ll celebrate the bard at our special Yeats150@Dalkey series with poets, actors and critics including Fintan O’Toole, Diarmaid Ferriter and award-winning writer Paul Murray . And if Irish history and politics do it for you, why not join Olivia O’Leary who asks, who really owns 1916? We are delighted to welcome you to Dalkey this year and hope you enjoy the festival. We think it’s our best yet!

This means that one day soon Finn will be the last remaining Legend Hunter. Except… he’s not very good at it. I thursday 11th june 2015, 7pmHthe secret garden marquee €10 Money, Mullahs, Migrants and Madmen – what’s Europe’s future? In this massive election year all over Europe, is the EU about to lurch to the extremes? From Le Pen in France, Syriza in Greece and Sinn Fein here, anti-EU parties on the extreme left and the extreme right are making huge ground. In Britain, with Cameron back in number 10, a referendum on leaving the EU is likely. The economy is weak, the EU’s borders are threatened by Russia in the East, Islamic fundamentalists want to attack in the West and millions of migrants are on the move from Africa. To quote WB Yeats, “can the centre hold”? If the global big picture is your thing, this is not to be missed. Hard to believe, but in 2010 the first iPad was unveiled. The iPhone was still a novelty. The Arab Spring had not yet swept through the Middle East and Vladimir Putin was still everyone’s new best friend. Even here, the Troika hadn’t been heard of!

Yet all that has changed dramatically in a few short years. And that change is accelerating.

From technology to finance, health care to genetics, education to immigration; your life, and our country, are about to be hit by a tsunami of change. Are you ready? Have you even stopped to think about it? When we are all busy, sometimes we don’t have time to take in just what is going on in the world around us. Make time tonight, you can’t afford to miss it.

With Professor Mark Blyth, author and FT award winning columnist Simon Kuper, geneticist Professor Aoife McLysaght and Dearbhail McDonald of the Irish Independent. Chaired by Sean Moncrieff.

150 Years On, Why Does Yeats Still Resonate?

I saturday 13th june 2015, 12pm  H the town hall €15 In 2015, why do Yeats’ words still resonate so effortlessly? Why does this complex, tortured, flamboyantly gifted poet of the 20th century endure? What made him so significant? Why does reading his poetry still bring a mesmeric hush to even the most raucous room?

Join the Poet Laureate of Dalkey, Gary Jermyn; Abbey Theatre Director, Fiach Mac Conghail; Artistic Director of the Ark, Aideen Howard; illustrator of the Yeats in Love collection, Annie West, and writer and Horslips frontman Barry Devlin as we explore Yeats, the man, the work and the legacy.

America’s best-known satirist, author of 20 best-selling books, PJ O’Rourke is a constant thorn in the side of both right-on liberals and pumped-up Conservatives. Ahead of the US Presidential election, we are delighted to welcome him to Dalkey. As well as being incredibly incisive, this event will be a hoot.

A force of nature, he has been at the forefront of American culture, criticism and letters for four decades. No one escapes O’Rourke’s satirical gaze. Simon Kuper on the Beautiful Game

I saturday 13th june, 12:30pm H the secret garden marquee €15

“My first question, then, was how soccer affects the life of a country. My second was how the life of a country affects its soccer.”

This is how Simon Kuper – the thinking woman’s sports writer – opened his groundbreaking, award-wining classic book Football Against the Enemy.

As the entire nation is transfixed on tonight’s game against Scotland, one of the world’s best football writers, author of Soccernomics is here in Dalkey to discuss about the only thing the rest of us are actually talking about, the beautiful game, and Ireland’s place in it.

Economists: what are they good for?

I saturday 13th june, 2pmH the seafront marquee €15

They missed the boom. They missed the bust. They told us there would be a “soft landing” and the banks were “well capitalized”; and even this time around, most have missed the recovery.

Can they tell us something about why we do things, how the world works and what the future holds?

With thousands of students studying economics and banks and university departments stuffed full of them, we ask whether these little Emperors have any clothes on at all?Economists: who needs them?

Paul McGuinness The Business of Music

I saturday 13th june, 2.30pmH saint patrick’s church €12 In a business dominated by mavericks and moguls, Paul McGuinness knows everyone in the global music game. His insights and tales of the ascent and dominance of U2 will be fascinating, of the deals signed and the behind the scene’s operation that makes a global band and global brand tick. Looking at the business of music as well as the entire entertainment game, from the creative talent that makes great art, to the piracy that wants it for free, from Spotify and copyright and today’s resurgence of wonderful creativity in TV, David McWilliams will tease out some of the issues concerning this great business man and advocate for artists, record labels and music publishers.

Oh yes it’s nearly upon us, 1916! We all know nearly as many people saw U2 in the Dandelion Market as were in the GPO at the Rising, or was it the other way around?

The State is about to go into an overdrive of commemorative frenzy. Everyone will want a piece of it because the closer you are to a Rising, which the vast majority of Irish people rejected 100 years ago, the more Irish you are.

But who really owns it? And if it happened now, what side would you be on, honestly?

Chaired by Olivia O’Leary. With Fintan O’Toole, Diarmaid Ferriter and Belfast-born BBC Radio 4 presenter Andrea Catherwood. Like so many of us, Andrea has mixed ancestry but hers beats most: one grandfather was a Presbyterian minister at the Somme while the other grandfather was fighting for Irish freedom in 1916. The question is who owns 1916? After all, at least seventy times more Irish soldiers died fighting for the British than died fighting the British.

When your kids are making a holy show of you, have you ever thought to yourself, why don’t foreign kids behave as delinquently as Irish kids? Well now we have the answer for you! Pamela Druckerman, Paris-based opinion writer for the New York Times, mother and author of the global best-seller Why French Children Don’t Throw Food, which has been translated into 24 languages, talks to Colm O’Regan, comedian and author of Irish Mammies.

What can Irish Mammies learn from French Mamans about raising mannerly kids and having a life of their own? There must be a snag. By the way, her young children are being minded for the weekend by some unruly Irish teenagers, so we’ll see how that turns out!

Elif Shafak is the Muslim world’s best selling female author. With swathes of the Muslim world being riven by ISIS, fundamentalism and war and with Islam being frequently misunderstood and vilified in the West, Elif explains why she hasn’t the luxury of being apolitical.

The most-read female author in Turkey – a country on the front line of the battle between the secular and the religious – she is an anomaly, a

woman with a politically feminist education, yet with a deep respect for and knowledge of Sufism and Ottoman culture. She has written 12 novels including Honour, The Bastard of Istanbul and Forty Rules of Love.We are delighted to have such a brilliant writer with us at Dalkey and in a year when the Middle East threatens to descend into further chaos, it is simply wonderful to have a renowned storyteller who can dissect its complexities for us in such a sensitive manner. For a taster of what to expect have a look at her TED Talk.

Roberto Trotta’s book, The Edge of the Sky has been described by the BBC as “making the whole of science sound like a wonderful fairytale.”

Dr. Roberto Trotta, Lecturer in Astrophysics at Imperial College, London and writer Aifric Campbell will discuss how telling stories about science can bring the subject alive. Does telling stories illuminate scientific themes? Are Science Fiction movies and sexy physicists on TV making science more appealing or do they get in the way of the facts? They will explore how we might better teach science in schools, and the challenges of presenting scientific topics in the media.

Martina Devlin in conversation with Lia Mills

Isunday 14th june, 5pmH the heritage centre €10

The House Where It Happened is inspired by a true but little-known story about the last conviction for witchcraft in Ireland. In 1711, in a remote corner of Antrim, eight women from the Ulster-Scots community were accused of being witches by a pretty young newcomer. A group trial followed, causing a sensation. What happened was Ireland’s version of the notorious Salem epidemic. But why did a seemingly normal girl claim she was bewitched? And why did a community turn against eight respectable women? Could the answer lie in the strange house where the supernatural activity was said to have taken place? Martina Devlin has fictionalised a compelling episode from history, transforming it into a spine-chilling tale.

In conversation with Lia Mills.

Ian Robertson Politics in the Brain

Isunday 14th june, 5.30pmH the secret garden marquee €10

The philosopher, mathematician and peace activist Lord Bertrand Russell said that power was the essential substance of human relationships in the way that energy is the fundamental entity in physics. He believed that power is man’s (and woman’s) ultimate goal. In this talk, Ian Robertson will show that power is one of the most potent brain-changing agents known to humanity and how political life is essentially a struggle to gain power, and then to find ways of protecting people from its effects on the brains of people who hold it. Professor Robertson will look at the neuropsychology of power and attempt to understand different types of political behaviour in terms of the underlying brain processes.

Dan Ariely The Art of Self Control

Isunday 14th june, 7pmH the seafront marquee €20

Oh Lord make me virtuous, but just not yet! - Saint Augustin.

How often do you lie to yourself? How many times have you intended to do the right thing, but failed? How often do you give into temptation? Think about this week. Have you taken less exercise than you wished you had? Or eaten more than you wished you had?

The brilliant Dan Ariely – ten million people have already watched his TED talks – will tell us why we give in to temptation, why we deceive ourselves and whether we can become better people.
