W elcome to the sixth book festival in Dalkey – the festival that combines brilliant global names with a wonderful local vibe. Because of the success of last year’s Festival Marquee in the

Secret Garden, we’ve added a beautiful Seafront Marquee in the breathtaking Dillon’s Park opposite Dalkey Island. As you know, we’ve always believed that the mind that loves great literature also loves great music, film, economics and science. It’s also a mind that is fascinated by trends in technology, politics and innovation.

So this year our guests include writers, poets, directors, psychiatrists, scientists, economists, comedians, all sorts.

Come listen to TED superstars: writer and rock chick Amanda Palmer and the unbelievably talented economist, Dan Ariely, whose combined TED talks have been seen by over 10 million people.

We have America’s finest, the inimitable PJ O’Rourke, talking politics, society and looking forward to the Presidential election. Gabriel Byrne will be here reflecting on Yeats, acting and whether TV is trouncing Hollywood. If science and the brain is your thing, what about Professor Ian Robertson on the mind of megalomaniacs or the man who holds the Guinness Book of Records record for memory, Eran Katz on how you can improve your own brain?

One author not to miss is the best-selling female writer in the Muslim world, Turkey’s Elif Shafak and while you are here, you’d be mad not to catch the hottest property in North American writing, Patrick De Witt. June 13th is the 150th anniversary of WB Yeats’ birthday and we’ll celebrate the bard at our special Yeats150@Dalkey series with poets, actors and critics including Fintan O’Toole, Diarmaid Ferriter and award-winning writer Paul Murray . And if Irish history and politics do it for you, why not join Olivia O’Leary who asks, who really owns 1916? We are delighted to welcome you to Dalkey this year and hope you enjoy the festival. Even the youngest book fans can join in with this year’s Dalkey Book Festival at special story times in The Gutter Bookshop at 20 Railway Road with readings from a great selection of books for young children. We’ll have guest storytellers on the day and all children should be accompanied by and adult. Free! And no need to book!

Sarah Webb Collage and Writing Workshop (age 7+) I saturday 13th june at 11amH dalkey library €12 Create Your Own Fantasy Island! This workshop is perfect for creative youngsters who love making up stories and who also like drawing and collage. Sarah will share her research and writing secrets and help children create their own island paradise.During the workshop the children will learn about how a story is created, from initial idea to final book. Sarah’s new series for children (age 8+), The Songbird Cafe Girls, is set on a fictional West Cork island, inspired by Cape Clear and Sherkin Islands.

The workshop will cover a wide range of topics, including starting to write, layout, what makes a good story, and drawing great pictures to support your story.

Writer and illustrator Oisin McGann is author of the critically acclaimed Small-Minded Giants, the Mad Grandad series and Rat Runners. In this interactive illustration workshop, Oisin will talk about how you think up characters and plot, while helping you draw all these amazing creatures swirling around your head.

Have you ever wanted to draw your favourite character or creature from your favourite book? Well, now is your chance to join a brilliant cartoonist who will help you bring your ideas to life. Mark will guide you as you draw these creations, and of course, you can then bring the work home!

Drawing cartoons is a rare talent that demands skill, precision, humour and an uncanny ability to tell a story. One of the finest animators in Ireland, Mark’s punk economics cartoons, made with David McWilliams, have been seen by over 1million You Tube viewers. A former Disney cartoonist and animator, Mark’s work has featured widely in many well-known Irish animations, so you’ve probably seen his work before without knowing it!

Do you enjoy enjoyment? Do you find danger dangerous? You, your 5 to 12 year olds, and anybody else for that matter, are invited to this mammoth event in the history of books with David O’Doherty (words) and Chris Judge (pictures).

Danger is Everywhere is a handbook for avoiding danger with lots of BSTs (Basic Safety Tips) to minimize the risk of SAHTY (Something Awful Happening To You).

Yoga Storytelling with Nicola Foxe (age 3-9)

Yoga Storytelling is a lot of fun. Children become the tale’s characters following the story through energizing yoga poses, before getting cosy for relaxation.

There will be storytelling, with breathwork interwoven, and a relaxation at the end. Look forward to hearing some popular books such as We’re going on a Bear Hunt and Jack and the Beanstalk.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. (Don’t worry, the adult need not participate!)

The session lasts about one hour and is for a maximum of 15 children.

According to the Irish Examiner, “there are tears and lots of laughter and people are truly moved by the evening; a very unique cross between a book reading and a theatrical experience.” The show runs for 2 hours with a short interval.

Bewley’s Café Theatre Love and War

Bewley’s Cafe Theatre and the Delmaine String Quartet have collaborated on a special programme of words and music reflecting the human experience of the Western Front.

Threaded through this extraordinary love story are some of the great works from the famous generation of World War One soldier poets and composers, as well as music by Bach, Ravel, Dvorak & Schubert.

“... a small gem of melancholy beauty… the three combine with heart-wrenching tenderness but there’s a particular poignancy in De Wrixon’s pure voice: she sings with an almost unbearable sense of loss.” The performance runs from 7pm to 8.40pm, with a short interval.

Belinda McKeon and Sara Baume

Belinda McKeon is the author of Solace (2011), Faber Prize winner and Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book of the Year, and Tender, which will be published by Picador this June. Her essays and journalism have appeared in the New York Times, the Paris Review, and the Guardian. We are thrilled to have her over from New York to talk to the Dalkey audience.

Sara Baume’s debut novel, Spill Simmer Falter Wither, has been hailed by critics as the biggest new thing in Irish literature. In 2014, this highly talented young writer won the prestigious Davy Byrnes Award, previously held by the likes of Anne Enright and Claire Keegan, for her short story Solesearcher 1.

right through his adult life, Fintan chonicles his changing relationship with Ireland’s preeminant poet. If Fintan O’ Toole didn’t get him at first, there’s hope for all of us! Celebrated stage and screen actors, Nick Dunning and Lise-Ann McLaughlin, will join Fintan on the Dalkey stage to bring some of Yeats’ most memorable poems to life.

His insights and tales of the ascent and dominance of U2 will be fascinating, of the deals signed and the behind the scene’s operation that makes a global band and global brand tick. Looking at the business of music as well as the entire entertainment game, from the creative talent that makes great art, to the piracy that wants it for free, from Spotify and copyright and today’s resurgence of wonderful creativity in TV, David McWilliams will tease out some of the issues concerning this great business man and advocate for artists, record labels and music publishers.

Oh yes it’s nearly upon us, 1916! We all know nearly as many people saw U2 in the Dandelion Market as were in the GPO at the Rising, or was it the other way around?

The State is about to go into an overdrive of commemorative frenzy. Everyone will want a piece of it because the closer you are to a Rising, which the vast majority of Irish people rejected 100 years ago, the more Irish you are.

But who really owns it? And if it happened now, what side would you be on, honestly?

Chaired by Olivia O’Leary. With Fintan O’Toole, Diarmaid Ferriter and Belfast-born BBC Radio 4 presenter Andrea Catherwood. Like so many of us, Andrea has mixed ancestry but hers beats most: one grandfather was a Presbyterian minister at the Somme while the other grandfather was fighting for Irish freedom in 1916. The question is who owns 1916? After all, at least seventy times more Irish soldiers died fighting for the British than died fighting the British.

The philosopher, mathematician and peace activist Lord Bertrand Russell said that power was the essential substance of human relationships in the way that energy is the fundamental entity in physics. He believed that power is man’s (and woman’s) ultimate goal. In this talk, Ian Robertson will show that power is one of the most potent brain-changing agents known to humanity and how political life is essentially a struggle to gain power, and then to find ways of protecting people from its effects on the brains of people who hold it. Professor Robertson will look at the neuropsychology of power and attempt to understand different types of political behaviour in terms of the underlying brain processes.
