Waste Food Waste MoneyDid you know that food waste is the largest component of mu-nicipal landfills? According to USDA research 31 percent of foodat the retail and consumer level goes uneaten. American house-holds throw away approximately 15-20 percent of food pur-chased; an average of $600 worth of food a year. The largestpercentage of food wasted is meat, poultry and fish, followed byvegetables and dairy products. To save money and reduce waste, consider these suggestions.Suggestions for Reducing Food Waste•Shop your refrigerator first! Cook or eat what you already haveat home before buying more.•Plan your menu before you go shopping and buy only thosethings on your menu.•Buy only what you realistically need and will use. Buying in bulkonly saves money if you are able to use the food before it spoils.•Go straight home after grocery shopping so perishable foodscan be refrigerated or frozen. Warm temperatures are the leadingcause of food spoilage, so refrigerate or freeze all perishablefoods as soon as you get home. On hot days, take a large coolerin your trunk for cold foods. Likewise, on a cold winter day, fragileproduce can freeze if left in the trunk for an extended time.•Be creative! If safe and healthy, use the edible parts of food thatyou normally do not eat. For example, stale bread can be usedto make croutons and beet tops can be sautèed for a deliciousside dish.•Freeze, preserve, or can surplus fruits and vegetables - espe-cially abundant seasonal produce.•Store foods properly. The Food Keeper brochure, a guide fromthe Food Marketing Institute and Cornell University, offers guide-lines to consumers on food quality, safe handling, and storage ofshelf stable foods, food purchased frozen, food purchased refrig-erated, bakery items, and fresh produce. For a copy of thebrochure call Cornell Cooperative Extension at 885-8995, or youcan view the information at our web site: www.ccesaratoga.org,under the Food and Nutrition tab. •Have a plan for leftovers and store them properly either in therefrigerator or freezer, depending how soon youʼll use them.•Make less by reducing the size of the recipe you're preparing.•You can also reduce waste when you eat out. At restaurants, order only what you can finish by asking about portion sizes andbe aware of side dishes included with entrees. Take home theleftovers and keep them for your next meal.Source: USDA, http://www.usda.gov/oce/foodwaste/

What do dates on food labels mean? Some food gets wasted because people donʼt know how long tokeep it. One tool you can use is the dates on food labels, butthere is confusion among consumers about what the dates mean. What do dates on food labels mean? Many foods have a datestamped on the label. These dates can help you choose foodsthat are fresh and safe to eat. You will see different dates on dif-ferent types of foods.•The "Pull-By" or "Sell-By" date is used on foods like milk, cheese, and packaged meats. It is the last date the productshould be sold. These foods are usually stored in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh and safe for few days after this date if youstore them properly.•"Freshness" or "Best-If-Used-By" dates are used on productslike bakery goods or packaged cereals. The date is the last daythe product can keep its best quality. After this date, the food maylose some of its freshness and nutritional value.•An "Expiration" or "Use-By" date is the last date the food shouldbe eaten or used. It is used mostly on products such as refriger-ated dough and yeast.•A "Pack" date is the date the food was manufactured orprocessed and packaged. This type of date is used for foods thatcan be kept for a long time, like canned goods.Source: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsavings/page/how-long-keep

“IT IS GOOD to be children sometimes, and never better than atChristmas when its mighty Founder was a child himself.”

CHRISTMAS IS A TIME OF MAGICLighted trees and glowing fires,
spicy smells of Christmas baking, Carol music from church choirs.
THE ONLY RELIGIOUS holiday recognized as a legal holidaythroughout the United States is Christmas! Alabama became thefirst state to declare Christmas a legal holiday, in 1836. By 1890,all other states had done the same.
CHRISTMAS REMEMBERING...GREATER than all the Christ-mas traditions is the real meaning of Christmas. Many of us onlythink of Christmas as a day for Santa Claus, presents and eating. But the real significance and joy of Christmas comes when weremember it is the birthday of Jesus... Godʼs gift to us.

For instance: small square ofcheddar with a chunk of pineapple or apple speared on top witha toothpick; Swiss cheese and ham squares on top of Saltinesor Triscuits; mild Muenster with sweet pickle team-ups. And inbetween cruditie strips or crisp celery, carrot, green peppers, radishes, plus cocktail tomatoes, watercress---anything goes(fast!).

“The greatest gift a man cangive his children is to love theirmother.”
RING OUT the old, ring in thenew. Ring happy bells, acrossthe snow. The year is going, let him go.
Alfred Lord Tennyson
THESE CHRISTMAS GIFTS are for you: Add up the friends youhave. Total the possessions you've got. Measure the love of yourfamily. Think of the skills that enable you to work at home or at ajob. Look at your children. Be grateful for the wealth of a soundmind. Enjoy good health....and be thankful!
NEAT, INEXPENSIVE GIFT wrapping. A fabric remnant left overfrom a sewing project can make an elegant looking package. Useplain paper, and paste on cut out designs from old Christmascards.
LONG MAY CHRISTMAS LIVE! Christmas is a medicine...itheals broken relations with its oil of love smoothing the roughplaces. Christmas is a tonic...it often turns the selfish into truegivers of oneʼs self. The sweet spirit of Christmas helps to coverthe repulsive things that have happened through the year as welook away from earth and the predicaments it has gotten into, tothe peace that Christ can give to our hearts. Hope, joy, love, courage, generosity find their places at Christmas time. Savorthis Christmas feeling - long may it live throughout a New Year!
Christmas is greeting cardssent far and near, filling eachheart with a message of cheer.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU: RECHARGE YOUR CAREER(NAPSI)—According to some career experts, the holiday seasonor any quiet time at work is a good time to plan, organize, reflecton where you are in your career and where you would like to go.“In overly hectic lives, career planning often gets moved to theback burner,” said Michael Bevis, director of Academic Affairs forUniversity of Phoenix and faculty member for the School of Busi-ness. “Many Americans feel unsatisfied and stagnant in their ca-reers, and the only way to take action is to devote time to makinga plan for change. This does not necessarily mean a careerchange, but often an adjustment in the way you approach yourexisting career.”According to Bevis, job complacency should not be ignored be-cause career satisfaction plays a major role in overall satisfaction. In fact, a national University of Phoenix survey conducted by Har-ris Poll found that nearly half of working adults in the U.S. gainequal or greater feelings of self-worth from their jobs and careersas they do from their personal lives, and 45 percent are stillsearching for the right career. Another survey from the Universityshows that nearly two-thirds of all working adults say they cur-rently have limited opportunities within their companies, but 53percent acknowledge they should take charge by being more en-trepreneurial in their careers.Bevis agrees. “Being entrepreneurial means approaching yourexisting career with purpose, not relying on your employer tomanage your career,” he said. “Setting career goals, developinga strong personal brand and constantly looking for ways to growand tie your responsibilities to the companyʼs bottom line canhelp you succeed and feel more engaged in your career.”Bevis says taking charge of your career takes planning. He sug-gests you use downtime to:
1. Learn as much as possible about your organization, industry, and career growth opportunities.
2. Develop a strategic business plan to grow and improve yourpersonal brand within your organization.
3. Keep your personal brand current and sustainable by knowinghow your skills and experience fit into the big picture of your or-ganization.
4. Network with individuals who have diverse experiences.
5. Identify and engage with a mentor. This individual does notnecessarily have to be in your own company. Find someone whoyou admire professionally and whose success mirrors your goals.
6. Identify and engage with a sponsor in your own company. Thisperson can champion your success and advocate for your growthwithin the company.
7. Research options for continued learning. Take a class, pursuean advanced degree or research certificate and continuing edu-cation programs. With educational options growing more cus-tomized every day, it is easier than ever to find ways to learn, grow and challenge yourself long after you graduate high schoolor earn a bachelorʼs degree.
“Business education encourages students to think outside thebox and be more entrepreneurial in their careers,” adds Bevis.“Employees at every level who approach their career as if theywere entrepreneurs, with purpose and measurable goals, areoften the happiest and most successful.”For more information about the survey, visit phoenix.edu/news.

Five Quick Ways To Upgrade Your Home For Resale(NAPSI)—Whether youʼre considering cashing in on your equity, downsizing, trading up, movingfor a change of scenery or relocating for better prospects, a few smart investments and improve-ments can help your home stand out from the competition so you get top dollar. Even if youʼre notplanning on moving anytime soon, these strategies can maximize your homeʼs value and increaseits marketability:• Sprucing up the exterior. If you think youʼll have a few years before you move, work on your land-scaping now to give plants time to mature. Look for easy-care perennials such as hostas, whichmultiply on their own. If you have less time, you can still achieve a quick makeover by power wash-ing paths and siding, painting or upgrading your front door and keeping the lawn watered andweeded.• Removing eyesores inside. Some minor adjustments can help buyers recognize whatʼs greatabout your home. Swap outdated fixtures, remove wallpaper and give everything a deep clean.Replacements donʼt have to be top of the line; they just need to eliminate hang-ups for potentialbuyers.• Improving the kitchen—to a point. You probably wonʼt recoup the cost of a full kitchen renovationbut smaller projects such as upgrading appliances and painting or refinishing cabinets can mod-ernize the space.• Refreshing rooms with neutral paint. This is a time-honored tip for a reason. While seeing your fa-vorite bold hues on the walls makes you happy, potential buyers may not agree. A fresh coat ofneutral paint can help them envision their own belongings in the space.• Focusing on energy efficiency. The right energy-smart upgrades can assure buyers theyʼre seeingan efficient home where utility bills can be minimized. Adding insulation to the attic and walls canmake a dramatic improvement in many homes. Consider the windows as well. Adding a heat-re-jecting window film such as 3M Sun Control Window Film can reduce cooling costs and typicallydoes not change the windowsʼ appearance. Since the window film can reject up to 99 percent ofUV rays, it can protect the investment you made in your hardwood floors, rugs, window treatments, furniture and artwork.Learn More For further facts, visit www.3M.com/homeimprovement.
