Five Postseason
Appearances Derek Brown
Coaching Staff
To say that Derek Brown has trans-formed the Coppin State women’s basketball program would be an understatement. Consider that Coppin State had posted one 20-win season and had three winning seasons prior to Brown’s arrival. Since he took over the reigns dur-ing the 1999-2000 season the Eagles have had fi ve 20-win seasons and he has led CSU to a winning record in
seven diff erent seasons on the way to establishing the Eagles as one of the premiere programs in the MEAC. During his 13 plus seasons, Brown has led Coppin State to three NCAA Tournament appearances, two berths in the WNIT, three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season crowns and a conference record 49-game winning streak against MEAC foes. Individually, he has won two MEAC Coach of the Year honors and has been named the Most Outstand-ing Coach of the MEAC Tournament on three occasions. Additionally, a Coppin State player has been named the MEAC Player of the Year in four of the past seven seasons and Brown has had 16 players earn all-conference honors under his direction. On the fl oor, it all starts on the defensive end for coach Brown. The Eagles have been ranked in the top 15 in the nation in fi eld goal percentage defense in three of the past
seven years and were ranked in the top 10 in the nation in scoring defense in both the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. His teams have put together some remarkable streaks during his tenure including a 41-game MEAC regular season winning streak and a 21-game winning streak in the Coppin Center. There is no question that Brown is an outstanding coach, but he has built his program by developing a family atmo-sphere. Brown, and his staff , have worked diligently to recruit student-athletes that will be successful both on and off the court and understand the value of teamwork. That teamwork resulted in another banner season for the Eagles in 2007-08. Brown led the Eagles to a 22-12 overall record, which marked the fourth straight season CSU has reached the 20-win plateau, and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years. The Eagles compiled a 13-3 MEAC record and fi nished

The victory put the Eagles into the NCAA Tournament and extended its string of consecutive postseason berths to four. During the 2006-07 season the Camden, N.J. native led Coppin State to a school-record 25 victories and the Eagles won their third straight conference regular season title on the way to a 25-8 season. After falling in the semifi nals of the MEAC Tournament, Coppin State earned a berth in the WNIT and earned the school’s fi rst-ever postseason victory with a 67-52 victory over St. Joseph’s. The Eagles posted their second straight undefeated regular season with an 18-0 mark and became the fi rst school in league history to post back-to-back undefeated seasons. The 2005-06 squad had a 21-game winning streak head-ing into their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. CSU fi nished 18-0 in the MEAC and were one of only six divi-sion I teams to go undefeated in conference play. Brown’s defense fi nished the season ranked fi rst nation

ally in fi eld goal percentage defense and sixth in scoring defense. On January 9, Coppin State defeated Norfolk State 61-35 to give him his 100th career victory. He is the only head coach for the CSU women’s basketball team to pass the milestone. Coppin State fi nished the season 22-9 to earn consecutive 20-win seasons for the fi rst time in the program’s history. In 2004-05 he guided Coppin State to its fi nest season in over a decade and was rewarded with a MEAC regular season and tournament championship. The Eagles also made their fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Coppin State picked up numerous monumental victo-ries during the campaign that began with an overtime win against UMBC in the season-opener. Other notable triumphs throughout the season included defeating Delaware State at Memorial Hall to end the Hornet’s 23-game home win-streak, the second longest in the country at the time. The Eagles also defeated Howard for the fi rst time since 2001 and an 80-46 victory over Bethune-Cookman was CSU’s second largest margin of victory in school history. The Eagles followed Brown to just their second 20-win season since joining the ranks of division I competition. They ended the season with a winning record in non-league com-petition for the fi rst time since the 1995-96 campaign. They opened the season 9-4 for the best start in school history and lost only one game in tournament play all season long. In 2003-04, picked to fi nish eighth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Coppin State was the surprise team of the league. They garnered a third-place showing and reached the MEAC tournament semifi nals for the fi rst time in six years. The Eagles picked up non-conference victories over Pitts-burgh, Drexel and St. Peter’s along the way to 18 wins overall and 13 in conference play. Coppin State’s transition to becoming a successful divi-
sion I program on an annual basis began to take hold during Brown’s third year at the helm in 2001-02. The Eagles put together a 14-14 overall record, went 12-6 in the conference. Among their wins was a decision over defending America East champion, and NCAA Tournament participant, Delaware in the fi rst round of the Cornell Classic. Sophomore LaKesha Wills was named MEAC Rookie of the Year at the end of the season. A long-time assistant to Coppin State men’s basketball coach Ron Mitchell, Brown took over the helm of the Eagles program on an interim basis in December 1999, following the resignation of Jennie Hall. During the remainder of the 1999-2000 season, Brown guided the Eagles to a 10-9 record while continuing as an assistant with the men’s team, and he also served the men’s program in 2000-01 in a limited capacity as special assistant before relinquishing those duties. Brown is in his 27th year at Coppin State and assisted Mitchell for 23 years, including 15 at Coppin State. During his tenure with the men’s program, he helped guide the Eagles to nine Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season titles, 11 straight winning seasons, two NIT tournament appearances and three NCAA tournament ap-pearances, including a fi rst-round upset of No. 2-seed South Carolina in 1997. The Eagles’ nine MEAC regular-season crowns equaled the most won by any program in the country during the ‘90s. Prior to coming to Coppin State, Brown and Mitchell were together for eight seasons at Gloucester County (N.J.) Col-lege. During that period the Roadrunners recorded a 227-45 mark while capturing several regional championships and participating in four National Junior College Championships. During his playing days, Brown was a star at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, N.J. The former point guard

led his team to a 27-0 record and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Championship his senior season. He also spent nine years as a school law enforcement
offi cer in Camden and was a correctional offi cer for the Cam-den County Sheriff ’s Department before coming to Coppin State. Brown and his wife, Joy, have one son, Jordan.
