DeWayne Burroughswillbeginhisfirstseasonastheheadwomen’sbasketballcoachatCoppinStateUniversityinthe2016-17season.Burroughs,aCoppinStatealum,comesfromtheUniversityoftheDistrictofColumbiawhereheservedastheheadwomen’sbasketballcoachlastseasonandpreviouslyasanassistantcoachandrecruitingcoordinatoratUDCsince2011.Burroughsguidedhis2015-16UDC

Season OutlookCoppinStatewillhavevengeanceontheirmindsaftercomingupshortintheMEACWomen’sBasketballTournamentchampion-shipgamecappinga10-6conferencerecordwitha16-16overallmarkin2015-16.Now,theEaglesembarkonanewchapteratthehelmofthewomen’sprogramaftertheretirementofalegendarycoach.

DeWayneBurroughsbecomestheseventhheadcoachinthe31-yearhistoryofthewomen’sprogramandtakesoverforDerekBrown,whoretiredafter17seasonasheadcoach.Burroughs,aCoppinStatealum,comesfromtheUniversityoftheDistrictofColumbiawhereheservedastheheadwomen’sbasketballcoachin2015-16andpreviouslyasanassistantcoachandre-cruitingcoordinatoratUDCsince2011.

WithbigshoestofillBurroughshastheluxuryofsixEaglesre-turningfromlastseason.CoppinStateledtheMEACinfieldgoalpercentage(39.7)andinbothsteals(321)andstealspergame(10.0).TheEaglesreturntwostartersandfourroleplayersthatallcontributedtotheteamadvancingtotheMEACTournamentchampionshipgame.

“Theymadeittothechampionshipgamelastyear.Thereturnershavethattasteandtheywanttogetbackandshowthatlastyearwasnofluke!Weallwanttogetbackandhopefullywinit,”Burroughssaid.

TheEagleshaveexperiencedguardplayinseniorKeenaSamuels(5-7,UpperMarlboro,MD),red-shirtjuniorGenesisLucas(5-7,Brandywine,MD)andgraduatestudentVanessaNeal(5-8,Penn-sauken,NJ).ThebackcourtduoofLucasandSamuelseachstart-edin30gameslastyearandwillbringleadershipandstabilityafterreachingtheconferencechampionshipgamelastseason.SamuelswastheEaglestop-scorerandranked12thintheMEACinpointspergame(11.7)lastyear.Shefinishedwith19dou-blefigurescoringgamesincluding14outof17MEACgames,averaging13.5pointsinconferenceplay.Samuelsalsoledtheteaminscoringseventimesandfinishedwiththreegamesof20ormorepoints.Lucashasdevelopedintooneofthetopleadguardsintheconference.SheledtheMEACinassistspergame(4.3),rankedsecondinassist/turnoverratio(+1.2)andwasthirdinstealspergame(2.3).

KeyroleplayersthatBurroughsexpectstostepintobiggerrolesthisyeararejuniorsCandiceBeverly(6-0,Fredericksburg,VA)andOluwaseunAdeniji(6-3,StatenIsland,NY).BeverlyhassteppedupforBurroughsduringpreseasonpracticeandwillbelookedupontoleadthegroupofpostplayers.SophomoreAlexisTaylor(6-3,Washington,DC)alsoaddsdepthtotheEaglesfront-courtafterseeingactionin17gameslastseason.

Inadditiontohisreturners,BurroughsaddsfourfreshmanandagraduatestudenthepreviouslycoachedatUDC.Graduate

studentTiaraGoode(5-10,Brentwood,NY)averaged10.1pointswith5.6reboundsona21-9,UDCThunderteamthatmadetheECCsemifinalsin2015-16.GoodecanstretchthefloorwithherdeepshootingrangealongwithVanessaNeal.

“Thefreshmanwillhavetomakeaquicktransitionfromhighschooltothecollegelevelgame,”Burroughssaid.

FreshmanMiaCrooms(5-7,Bronx,NY)canshootandgettothebasketverywell.Shewasnamedanhonorablementiontothe2015All-BronxGirlsBasketballTeamrepresentingMonsignorScanlanHighSchool.

TherookiepostplayersarefreshmenChanceGraham(5-11,Up-perMarlboro,MD)andOluwadamilolaOloyede(5-11,Beltsville,MD).Grahamisanathleticbigthatrunsthefloorwell,canblockshotsandscorethebasketball.
