AppearancesRon “Fang” Mitchell
Coaching Staff
Th e facts speak for themselves:
• A share of nine of 10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Confer-ence regular-season titles during the ‘90s, equaling the most won by any NCAA Division I program
the past decade• Four NCAA Tournament appearances• An upset of South Carolina in the fi rst
round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament• Two NIT bids, including a fi rst-round
win over St. Joseph’s in 1995• Six 20-win seasons• Eleven straight winning seasons
from 1988 to 2000• Th e all-time winningest coach
(409 career victories) at Coppin State• Six hundred and thirty six wins as
a head coach, including eight seasons at Gloucester County College
• Six-time MEAC Coach of the Year
And the facts say Ron “Fang” Mitchell, entering his 27th season at Coppin State, can coach with the best.
Th at point was never more in evidence than during the 2007-08 season.
At the mid-point of the year, the Eagles were 4-19 overall and 0-8 in the MEAC and fi rmly entrenched in last place.
Mitchell then directed one of the greatest turnarounds in the history of the MEAC as the Eagles won 12 of 13 games, which in-cluded a scintillating run through the conference tournament, to earn the fourth NCAA Tournament bid in school history.
While college basketball insiders have been aware of Mitchell’s knack for getting the most out of his teams, the rest of the nation was let in on the secret when the Eagles upset South Carolina in the fi rst round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament to become just the third No. 15 seed to win a game.
Coppin State narrowly missed advancing to the Sweet 16, fall-ing by one point to Texas in the second round.
Under Mitchell, who served as a coach for the 1995 USA Basketball National Team tri-als, Coppin State garnered a 107-11 mark in MEAC regular-season play during the 1990s.
Mitchell came to Coppin State from Gloucester County College in Sewell, N.J., where he had an outstanding career as a player and a coach.
In Mitchell’s fi rst three seasons with the Eagles, the team showed steady improvement with overall records of 8-19, 13-14 and 18-11, respectively.
During those seasons, Mitchell competed with holdovers as he gradually recruited his own players.
Th e program really took off in 1989-90, Coppin State’s fi rst squad com-prised entirely of Mitchell recruits. Th e Eagles fi nished 26-7 to register their best mark since moving to
Division I and claimed their fi rst-ever MEAC champion-
ship.Along the way,
Coppin State upset Creighton, Toledo and Maryland, all on the road. Th e Eagles won the MEAC tournament crown to earn their fi rst NCAA Tourna-ment berth. Mitchell
was named coach of the year by Black College Sports, Inc. (BCSI), and
the MEAC, as well as most outstanding coach at the MEAC Tourna-ment. In addition, the team was honored as BCSI’s team of the year.
In 1990-91, for the second straight time, Mitchell was named MEAC Coach of the Year aft er guiding the Eagles to a fi rst-place conference regular-season fi nish (14-2 record). Despite a disap-pointing loss to eventual champion Florida A&M in the MEAC tournament, the Eagles received a bid to the National Invitation Tournament.
In 1993, Mitchell sur-prised MEAC followers by
directing Coppin State to its second league tournament title in four years aft er being picked seventh in a preseason poll by confer-ence coaches and sports information direc-tors. Th e feat earned Coppin State its second trip to the NCAA Tournament, as Mitchell earned MEAC Coach of the Year honors.
With no seniors and only four juniors, the Eagles fi nished with a 16-0 MEAC slate, marking one of just three undefeated confer-ence seasons in league history. Coppin State repeated the deed in 1993-94.
Fift een years ago he guided the Eagles to their third straight 20-win season and a berth in the NIT. Coppin State posted the school’s fi rst-ever postseason tournament victory since moving to NCAA Division I with a 75-68 overtime win over host St. Joseph’s in the fi rst round.
In 1995-96, Mitchell, despite losing all fi ve starters and returning only two players, steered his team to a league-record fourth straight MEAC regular-season crown, tying South Carolina State for the honor.
And in 1997, Mitchell’s Eagles shocked the nation and ruined numerous offi ce pools with their 78-65 victory over South Carolina in the fi rst round of the NCAA tournament.

of high school sent him into the work force, and he did everything from washing dishes to toiling in an aluminum factory.
He eventually matriculated to Gloucester County College and joined the basketball team.
As a sophomore at Gloucester County Col-lege, Mitchell averaged 23 points per game and was named team most valuable player and a regional all-star.
No stranger to hard work, Mitchell juggled a grueling schedule of classes, basketball and a job on the graveyard shift at a local bank as a computer operator while at Gloucester.
Aft er his time at Gloucester, he spent a year at Rutgers-Camden before economics forced him back into the business world, where he turned in stints as the East Coast trainee manager for a shoe company and a printing salesman.
He eventually started his own business in Glassboro, N.J., called Mr. Fang’s Athletic Attire, which began as one store and soon became three.
It was during that time in 1978 that he applied for the head coaching position at his old school, Gloucester County College, whose program was sputtering at the time.
Aft er being named to the post, he turned things around immediately, leading the Roadrunners to a 19-11 mark his fi rst year.
Over the next seven seasons, Gloucester won no fewer than 26 games each year. His teams won 30 or more games four times and participated in the National Junior College Tournament in 1980, 1981, 1985 and 1986.
During his time at Gloucester, he began working at Temple’s basketball camps and seeking out the advice of John Chaney.
Th e two soon became good friends, and Mitchell’s philosophy mirrors Chaney’s in many ways, especially in his intensity and fondness for good defensive play.
He had an overall record of 227-45 at Gloucester, and his teams won 10 tourna-ments, fi ve Garden State titles and four regional championships, and he earned numerous coach-of-the-year honors.
While at Gloucester, Mitchell also earned his bachelor’s in business administration from Edison State College in 1984.
Mitchell has since completed his master’s degree in adult and continuing education from Coppin State (‘94).
Why The Nickname Fang?Where did the nickname “Fang” originate? Although some folks might think it comes from his sideline de-meanor and aggressive attitude, the name has actually been with Mitchell since his youth. James Williams, a teammate at Woodrow Wilson High, tagged him with the moniker because his deep, scratchy voice resembled that of a character named White Fang on “The Soupy Sales Show.” White Fang was a giant dog who was never seen onstage except for his paw. “Over the years, the ‘White’ was dropped for obvious reasons.” says Mitchell.
White Fang (left ) and Soupy Sales
Th e following year it was more of the same for the Eagles as they tied for the regular-season title with a 14-4 record. CSU won 14 straight games before suff ering a disappoint-ing loss to South Carolina State in the MEAC Tournament championship game.
In the 1999-2000 season Coppin State tied for second in the regular season and advanced to its seventh championship game appearance under Mitchell.
Mitchell led the Eagles to a share of the conference title in 2003-04 and another berth in the tournament title game. It marked the 10th regular-season title under his guidance and the eighth championship game appear-ance.
In addition to his own personal success, Eagle athletes have been named MEAC Player of the Year six times under his watch, and 45 times his players have earned all-conference honors.
Mitchell’s unorthodox path to a basketball coaching career began at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, N.J., where he was a three-sport standout.

Ranked Among the Best
In the summer of 2008, ESPN set out to rank the best college basketball programs in the country and labeled it The Prestige. Beginning with the 1984-85 season, when the NCAA Tournament was expanded to 64 teams, ESPN came up with a numberical point system that took into account various criteria of successes and failures. Coppin State earned a fi nal ranking of 90th, which tied the Eagles with Auburn and Texas Tech. Coppin State was the highest ranked team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and was the second-ranked team in the state of Maryland. It is no coincidence that the ranking covers the career of Ron “Fang” Mitchell, who has been at the helm of the Eagle program for 23 of the 25 years used in determining the standings.

Year in and year out, Fang Mitchell has
demonstrated his ability to get the most
out of his players, as evidenced by Cop-
pin State’s nine MEAC regular-season
titles during the 1990s. Apparently, oth-
ers have noticed. At the 1995 Final Four,
the Seattle Post-Intelligencer conducted
a survey of 113 coaches, asking them to
rate their peers. Among the questions
and results:
“Name the head coach who regularly
does the best job under the most dif-

“Fang gave me my start in coaching. I know he’s a strict disciplinarian on and off the court, and that’s why he’s been so success-ful at Coppin State. He’s an outstanding coach and does such a great job with his players.”
Bruiser FlintHead Coach, Drexel
“Coaches’ teams refl ect coaches’ personali-ties. Coppin State is relentless with its pressure, disciplined in its approach and very diffi cult to play against because Fang wills his team to play hard. Cop-pin State has always had great players, but Fang Mitchell gives them a chance to compete against anybody in the country on a given night.”
Kelvin Sampsonfor- mer
Head Coach, Indiana
“Who’s done a better job? Twenty wins at Coppin State is the equivalent of 28 at most programs be-cause of the number of road games played. I get the feeling his guys play so hard because they like him. He’s one of the good guys.”
Tim FloydHead Coach, UTEP
“In the coach-ing fraternity, what you hear most often is people not want-ing to play Princeton and Coppin State.”
Lute Olsonformer Head Coach,

“The only diff erence between Coppin State and schools in the SEC, Big East, Big Ten and other name leagues is the name of the con-ference it is in. They have very good players, and Fang Mitchell is an excellent coach.”
Nolan Richardsonformer Head Coach, Arkansas
“(Fang Mitchell) is magnanimous and one of the most brilliant coaches in the country today.”
John Chaneyformer Head Coach, Temple
“Coach Mitchell is not only a man of discipline, but
more importantly, a man of integrity. His disciplinary coaching style and daily les-sons on character and integrity have truly prepared me for the real world.”

Larry Tucker begins his 10th season as an assistant coach on the Coppin State staff .
Coach Tucker is involved in all facets of the Eagle basketball program from recruiting to on-court teaching.
No stranger to the Eagle basketball program, Tucker starred for Coppin State from 1999–2003.
As a senior Tucker served as team captain and was the Eagles’ leading scorer (15.3 ppg) and rebounder (5.6 rpg). He started all 28 games, reaching double fi gures in scoring 22 times, and tallied 20-points or more in eight games.
A native of Baltimore and a product of local power Dunbar High School, Tuck-er graduated from Coppin State with a bachelor’s degree in management sci-ence in 2002.
He ended his career with 1,449 points and 622 re-bounds, which rank fourth and fi ft h, respectively, on the Coppin State charts.
As a senior at Dunbar, Tucker played on a team that fi nished the season 25-3 and won the Class 2A state title. He scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the Poets victory.
Larry TuckerAssistant Coach
Jay Dull begins his eighth season at Coppin State and second as an assistant coach.
Dull, who previously coached at Towson and McDaniel, spent his fi rst two seasons at Coppin State as a special assistant for basketball and academic support.
During the past three years Dull has brought his Academic Game Plan program to Coppin State using the program as a means in which to improve organizational skills among the student-athletes.
Dull has coached at the high school and collegiate levels and served as an assistant coach at Towson from 1997-01. Most recently he was the head coach at McDaniel from 2001-05.
While at Towson he helped recruit a class ranked No. 1 in the America East Conference and was part of the staff for a Tiger team that established a school record for scoring defense.
In addition, he was the head coach at Grand View College where he directed the school to its fi rst-ever Midwest Classic Conference championship. During his stay, he coached the all-time scoring leader and the all-time, and single season, assist leader.
During the 1990s, Coppin State, which began NCAA Division I play in 1985–86, was one of the most successful programs in the nation, advancing to postseason play fi ve times. Coppin State’s nine regular-season conference titles equaled the most won by any team among all leagues during the 1990s, tying the Eagles with Murray State. In addition, Coppin State’s string of seven straight from 1994–2000 is tied for seventh in consecutive regular-season titles won. UCLA tops the list, having won 13 Pacifi c 10 titles in a row from 1967–79. Fang Mitchell’s program won two-thirds of its matchups to rank among the top 25 in winning percentage during the decade. Th e Eagles also garnered six MEAC Player-of-the-Year awards, and Mitchell was named the league’s top coach fi ve times.
