MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

On June 20th, it was once again my privilege to stand before a sea of red and

white and look upon the smiling faces of young men and women who are prepared to close this chapter in their lives, ready and able to embrace a future fi lled with opportunity and new beginnings. That morning they awoke as members of the Senior Class, but that evening they became High School Graduates, a distinction they rightfully earned and something no one can ever take away.

I was proud of this class and shared with the more than 3,000 guests some impressive statistics, which are featured on the left.

Our graduates should be proud of their accomplishments and equally proud to be joining an accomplished alumni community.

Before I closed my remarks I shared with our graduating seniors some fi nal words of wisdom. They came in the form of a motivational saying entitled The 5 W’s of Life.

• WHO you are is what makes you special. Do not change for anyone.

• WHAT lies ahead will always be a mystery. Don’t be afraid to explore.

• WHEN life pushes you over, you push back harder.

• WHERE there are choices to make, make them, stick with them and have no regrets.

• WHY things happen will never be certain. Take it in stride and move forward.

As our graduates begin this next chapter in their lives I hope they can use these words of wisdom to guide them through life’s challenges. I hope for each one of them a future of accomplishment, fulfi llment and happiness.

Of our 374 graduates 105 graduated with a GPA of 92 or higher.

97 graduates earned 851 college credits before earning their high school diploma.

322 graduates were accepted to 203 diff erent colleges or universities in 27 diff erent states.

This year’s graduates were accepted to schools as local as Rowan and as distant as the California State University.

9 of our graduates will be serving our country by enlisting in the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy and Naval Prep Academy.

The class of 2016 has been collectively awarded $5.6 million in various scholarships, grants and awards.

FAREWELL, COACH BARCHUK!

The 15-16 school year marked Coach Tony Barchuk’s 37th year as

a Kingsway teacher, mentor, football and softball coach. Earlier this year he announced his retirement, and earlier this month, his Kingsway family celebrated at Masso’s. At the June 23rd meeting, the Board of Education adopted the following to honor Barchuk:

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE RESOLUTION HONORING DISTINGUISHED

EDUCATOR & COACH TONY BARCHUK

• WHEREAS, Tony Barchuk leaves a permanent and positive impact on the High School Softball Program, amassing 241 wins, eight Tri-County Royal Division titles, two South Jersey Group II Champion titles, two South Jersey Group III Champion titles and one State of NJ Champion title, and

• WHEREAS, Tony Barchuk leaves a permanent and positive impact on the High School Football Program where he has coached since 1979, amassing 206 career wins, fourteen playoff berths, four appearances in sectional fi nals, four Tri-County Conference titles, two West Jersey National League Champion titles and one South Jersey Group II Champion title; and

• WHEREAS, Tony Barchuk, whose name is synonymous with high

school football, ranks second for active coaches with 366 total games coached while his 206 wins ranks tenth on the all-time list; and

• WHEREAS, Tony Barchuk, twice named Coach of the Year has been inducted into the South Jersey and State of New Jersey’s Football Halls of Fame and the Gloucester County Hall of Fame; and

• NOW, THERFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Kingsway Regional School District, through the Kingsway Education Foundation, establishes the annual Tony Barchuk Heart of a Dragon Scholarships to a softball and football player who emerge as team leaders on and off the fi eld, and have expressed interest in pursuing careers as educators;

• BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Kingsway Regional School District, on this 23rd day of June, 2016, by virtue of the authority vested by the Board of Education, in testament to Tony Barchuk’s generous and selfl ess service to the District and many contributions to the community, name the football fi eld at Kingsway Regional High School Tony Barchuk Field.

The Kingsway chapter of the National Art Honor Society went on a multi-museum trip

on June 3rd. The trip was made possible by the Teacher of the Year funds given to Mrs. Bjanes last year. The trip involved two private tours at diff erent museums. The fi rst museum was the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The students were given personal guided tours on the topic of modern art. The students were educated on ways to look at modern and contemporary art. Most art of this historical time period focuses on the message or meaning behind a work of art, moreover the technical skill needed to achieve the work.

The museum guides gave the students time to refl ect orally and write down their thoughts on many famous pieces of art. Senior student Marissa Willox commented, “I like that everyone can

interpret a painting diff erently, yet when you fi nd out what the artist’s story was in making the artwork, your opinion changes and you discover ideas you never would have thought of on your own. This is a valuable way to look at things.”

The students also went to the Philadelphia Magic Gardens, the second location on the trip, to experience non-traditional art. The site is built and decorated by artist Isaiah Zagar, includes mosaics of ceramic tiles and recycled materials. There was a section of the exhibition where Zagar made mosaics and paintings in honor of his wife. Senior Tyler Monaco said of the exhibit for Zagar’s wife, “I really like how the love for one person can be expressed in multiple ways and forms of art.” NAHS advisor Ashley Blubaugh said, “I wanted the students to experience two diff erent styles of art in one day, higher art in the museum and more folk non-traditional art at the Magic Gardens. This juxtaposition would allow the students to see that art is all around us and there are many diff erent ways in which someone can choose to make art and make a living as an artist.”

The NAHS would like to thank Mrs. Bjanes for donating her Teacher of the Year money so that these students could have this experience.

MEMORIAL DAY 2016

On May 24th, KRHS hosted its 22nd Annual Memorial Day Program. The purpose of this program is to remember the sacrifi ce of the men and women of the United States Armed

Forces who lost their lives in defense of our country. Included in the lengthy list of soldiers who paid the ultimate price are four Kingsway graduates: Donald Lee Corbin (Class of 1965), Stephen James Fiducioso (Class of 1965), Dennis Philip Martin (Class of 1968), and Ryan Kenneth Iannelli (Class of 2002). Ensuring that the character, the deeds, and the sacrifi ces of these outstanding men and soldiers is passed down from one generation to the next is an annual focal point of the program.

The keynote speaker for this year’s program was Robert Fazen – Graduate of West Point, Vietnam Veteran, Mayor of Bound Brook, and grandfather of Kingsway students Jay and Joel Scerbo. Senior Chris Cook unveiled his Eagle Scout project tribute to Kingsway graduates who have served.

Featured student speakers included Brianna Ashmen, Indrojit Chatterjee, Joseph Delmar, and Hritik Mehta. An outstanding performance of the “Armed Forces – Pride of America” by the Kingsway Combined Bands and a truly memorable rendition of “The Penny Song” by the Kingsway Combined Choirs contributed greatly to a ceremony that will not soon be forgotten.

Attention all Incoming Freshmen! This year’s Freshman Transition Camp will take place on August 9th and 10th from 9 am-12 pm. Students will be paired with

Erin is a member of student council, the student ambassador program, and Interact. Erin has played soccer for Kingsway and is a captain of her club soccer team. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.

Adithya is a member of student council, Circle of Friends, foreign language club, and model congress. Additionally, he is a member of the Jazz Ensemble and the Tri-M music honor society. Adithya was the keynote speaker at the Dare to Dream Conference last year. Congratulations to Erin and Adithya, two outstanding Dragons!

Emily has played soccer for Kingsway and is the captain of her club soccer team. She is a member of Interact, KDTV, photography club, and Yearbook. She is also an accomplished artist.

Jasmine is the treasurer of S.T.A.F.F., and a member of many clubs, including Key Club, S.A.D.D., Art Club, Cultures Club, Habitat for Humanity and many others. She is a member of NHS and NAHS, and won the St. Francis Veterinary Center Poster Contest. Congratulations to Emily and Jasmine, two outstanding Dragons!

KRHS PROM - 2016

This year’s Senior Prom gave students an opportunity to take a “Walk on the Red Carpet” like Hollywood stars across the stage at promenade. The prom was held on May 6, 2016 at

the Collingswood Ballroom. Fun was had by all with music by DJ Wave and souvenir photos from a photo booth. The evening came to a close with an ice cream sundae bar and the crowning of this year’s prom court and King and Queen. The court included Brittany Young, Gabriella Bruno, Lindsay Miller, Arquel Miller, Sophia Casella, Joaquin Cavazos, Xavier Vespa, Samuel Shinn, Adedoyin Adupoju, and Scott Berlin.

SPOTLIGHT STUDENTS

Congratulations to Veatriki Nitsolas! Vaetriki completed a printmaking project in 7th Grade Art Class, which

she submitted into a contest for her Greek Orthodox Church. She won third place! The project was Linoleum Block Printmaking. Students were shown the process of printmaking by a famous Japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai. They discovered the process of printmaking before linoleum was invented, and they learned how ancient Japanese artists used wood and tools to carve designs.

The students were shown many examples of logos, icons, signs, symbols, and hieroglyphics. After viewing examples of “symbolism,” the students were given the assignment of coming up with their own symbol to represent themselves.

HEAD OF THE CLASS

Congratulations to Michiya Davis! Renaissance member Michaya Davis was chosen as the Principal for the Day on Tuesday, May 17th. Ms. Davis spent the day

learning about student management, safety and security, lunch duty, budgeting, operations, and much, much more.

She even delivered a heartfelt speech to her fellow Dragons at the Renaissance Celebration. The adminstrators enjoyed spending time with her, and she even expressed the desire to one day be a school principal.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Congratulations to KRMS social studies teacher Ali Lisa and her husband Danny. Mrs. Lisa gave birth to their fi rst child, Justus John

Lisa. Justus was born on May 11th and was 8lbs 3oz.

Congratulations to KRMS paraprofessional Amanda Hengel and her husband Justin. Amanda gave birth to their second son, Declan Paul Hengel on April 20th. He weighed 7lbs 8oz.

BABY DRAGONS

KRMS’s third marking period Renaissance Club celebration was

held on Tuesday, May 17th. We had 260 total Renaissance card holders based on the students’ attendance, academics, community service, and behavior for the third marking period. Even though the weather did not cooperate, all 260 students were treated to an inside carnival that included several carnival games, a dunk tank, and an appearance by Mister Softee! A total of fi ve $50 gift cards were raffl ed off at the end of the celebration as well as an iPad Mini, and a great time was had by all students. Thanks to all of our supporters in the community! A special thanks to our Premier Sponsors: Botto’s Italian Line Restaurant, A’Pizze Tuscan Grill, Ray’s Pizza, and Sweetsboro Bakery.

RENAISSANCE CELEBRATION

On May 16th, I attended the the annual meeting of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN). The day at Washington D.C. started off at the Hubert

Humphrey Building where the PCFSN was having their annual meeting.

The Council consists of a number of athletes, physicians, and nutritionists and I was excited to meet some of them in person. I met players like Drew Brees, Dominique Dawes, and Jason Collins. I also got the opportunity to join the Council members for a panel discussion and got to share my thoughts on what the council should be doing in the upcoming years to involve more schools and students in their programs.

Only 4 students (including me) were invited to attend and only 2 of us had the opportunity to join the panel! After the discussion, our FuelUpToPlay60 team joined the Council members for a private luncheon, and the fun continued. We got to meet them in a closer setting and were able to learn more about the work of the Council.

From there, we walked over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture housed in the Whitten building. We were also able to get a part of our 60 minutes of activity for the day covered with our walk and managed to stop outside the Capitol to capture some fun moments on camera!

At the USDA, we met the Secretary of Agriculture, who gave us a personal tour of his offi ce. We also met the Undersecretary and the Deputy Undersecretary of Agriculture. What a privilege it was! Then he sat down with us for an informal discussion about our accomplishments at our schools.

It was an amazing day, a day that I will cherish forever!
