ISSUE 19 DECEMBER 15, 2017 Galen Catholic College Newsletter Congratulations Class of 2017! Congratulations to our 2017 Dux: Brooke Callahan with an ATAR of 98.05 Galen Catholic College would like to congratulate all Year 12 students across the 2017 VCE and VCAL courses on their results. We are very pleased with our outstanding success rate at VCE and that a further 22 Galen students have achieved their Senior VCAL. We are very pleased to announce that the Dux for 2017 is Brooke Callahan with an ATAR of 98.05 placing her in the top 1.5 % students in the state. We are equally pleased to report that so many students have achieved to the best of their ability and have given themselves the best pos- sible opportunity to move onto their preferred next steps in life whether that be employment, further study or a GAP year. Galen Principal, Bernard Neal, said that the staff and Galen community are immensely proud of the efforts of the 2017 cohort. “It is really important to note that we are equally proud of all students who put in their best effort regardless of their subject scores and ATARs and regardless of whether they completed their VCE or VCAL. We are proud to have played such a pivotal role in preparing these young people over their final six years of school education.” Mr Neal also said, “The breadth of op- portunities available to our students through VCE, VCAL and VET has ensured that the senior students at Galen have been able to tailor courses to suit their particular needs and interests. Today’s results will enable them now to step forward with confidence and a sense of achievement that opens new doors into their futures. We wish all the students well on the next stage of their journey – Galen will always be here to help and advise them as needed, and to celebrate their future successes with them. We hope that they will continue to be as proud of their Galen heritage as we are of them.” Galen’s overall Study Score median was 30, on par with the Victorian state aver- age of 30. We are particularly proud that in 19 VCE subjects undertaken by Galen students. Galen had 8 students achieve ATARS of 90 or above. Galen had 26 students achieve Study Scores above 40 in individual subjects, placing all those students in the top 8% across Victoria in those subjects.

For their last practical class this year, the Hospitality students were treated to a cake decorating class with Angela Baldwin. Angela has her own specialty cake business, Little Red Robin

Cakes. She demonstrated 6 different Christmas designs for the students. The results speak for themselves.

Year 7 GirlsOn the 22nd of November, the year 7 girls Table Tennis team competed in the State Finals at MSAC in Melbourne. Beth, Caitlin, Yasmine and Emma all participated in this event. The first match was against Wonthaggi Secondary College. All of us tried our best and the outcome of this match was 6-0 in our favour. All of us were proud that we had a hope of progressing to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, our hope was starting to differ when we were challenged against McKin-non, with them winning 1-5 Beth and Emma won 1 point for our school when they played their doubles match. The third game we played against was ‘the blue team’, we all knew that this was our last chance to progress into the semi-finals. Beth found herself playing on one of the best year 7 table tennis players in Australia being ranked 2. Caitlin smashed her way to a close victory but unfortunately their overall skill overpow-ered us. Yasmine’s match was a very close game, it went down to the last set but she unfortunately lost. Emma used her skill and enthusiasm, but their skill shots were too much to compete with. The doubles were our last hope. Yasmine and Caitlin were unlucky. It was a quick match which ended up with them losing match. Beth and Emma we also unlucky in their match leaving the score 0-6. We all hope that we might make it to State together as a team next year. Thanks to Mrs. Belci (from Wangaratta High) and Mr. Burt for taking us to the venue and training us to this competitive level of skill. By Yasmin Budic

Year 8 Boys On Monday the 27th November the Year 8 boys team com-prising of Joe Allen, Fraser Holland Dean, Rhys Rigoni, Alex Mc Carthy, Tom Johnstone and Tom Gerrish played off in the State Final at M.S.A.C. The boys played in the first round and were successful in winning their games in the first round. Strong play by all of the boys guaranteed them a spot in the semi finals. The boys were down to the last 4 schools in the state. The first game was against Northcote High School and after strong play by Rhys Rigoni and Alec McCarthy in their singles

matches and doubles matches we were able to match it with the opposition. It was tied 3 rubbers each all but unfortunate-ly for us because they won more games they advanced to the grand final which they eventually won. It was a terrific perfor-mance by all of the 6 team members and they should all be congratulated on reaching the top 4 schools in the state.

Year 9 & 10 BoysOn Monday 27th the intermediate boys table tennis team which consist of Andrew Lindner, Hayden Pearson, Samuel Allen, Lachlan Carboon and Lewis Holland-Dean went down to Melbourne to play state table tennis. We played against 7 other teams from all around the state. We were put into a pool of 4 teams and we won the first game 5-1. We then went to verse the next team and we lost 0-6 after that we went onto the last game. If we won it we would be in the semi finals and if we lost we wouldn’t. Unfortunately we lost but everyone played really well and it was a good day. Thanks to Mr. Burt and Will Nolan for taking us down on the day.

13 Years

They mope through the gate,Sombre stares upon faces.Over shoulders their freightAnd shoes fastened with laces. With friends they converse,Whilst awaiting the bell,Knowing it can only get worseOnce they’re welcomed to hell.Squeaking and slamming, the lockers abused,They move to their seats with a pen in their hand.Marking paper with ink they’re rather bemused,Wishing they were any where else but in this state of remand.Through the speakers the bell rings one last blow,But they leave to school grounds knowing they’ll be back tomorrow.

Battle Although the battlefield silentAnd the dead hitherto tallied. There is some whose proclivity still violentAnd some who remain uncarriedWith salutes and services, they’re remembered,As heroes and battlers united. But some are left feeling dismembered,And some are left feeling benighted. They survive the violent conflicts,But that’s only half the battle. For it’s what the mind later depicts,That really brings on a rattle.Remember the fallen, remember the brave. But spare a thought for those whose mind a slave.

2/24 Battalion AwardOn Saturday 11th November the 2/24 Battalion, affectionately known as ‘Wangaratta’s Own’ held it’s annual Remembrance Day reunion and awards dinner. Every year the Battalion recognize Year 11 students from the 3 secondary schools in Wangaratta who have displayed outstanding leadership, loyalty, service of others and an excellent work ethic. This year Bridie Nixon was the deserving recipient and during her acceptance speech she expressed her heartfelt gratitude for her teachers and the opportunities Galen has provided for her over her secondary years, along with a desire to continue to work hard in her studies and give back to her community. Congratulations Bridie and all the best for your Year 12 studies.

Supporting your young person during

the holidays

Holidays can take students away from friends and their usual school supports.

Changes to routine can cause some young people to feel stressed, isolated and alone. Parent support is very important at this time.

Below is some information to help you support young people to stay in a healthy headspace in school holidays. There is also some information that may help you to identify when your young person might need some extra support and where to go for help.

Version 1 – June 2015

There are a number of ways you can support your young person’s mental health and wellbeing in the holidays:

1. Encourage them to stay connectedSocial relationships are important to your young person’s general wellbeing.

It is okay if they take time out for themselves at times, but encourage them to keep in contact with friends over the holidays. Friends can provide both play and support, and spending time with friends is also important for keeping and building on existing friendships.

If your young person is not feeling up to going out, even a phone call, email, text message or Facebook message can help them to feel connected to friends and family.

2. Encourage them to stay involvedEncourage involvement with volunteer work, hobbies, clubs or committees, or sports – these can help young people feel connected to their wider community. Participate with them when you can.

Involve them in decisions and give them responsibility at home (e.g. deciding what to eat for dinner and helping to prepare it).

Help them to identify and set realistic goals. Setting and achieving realistic goals can be incredibly motivating and can help build self-confidence.

3. Encourage physical activityPhysical activity is important for everyone’s health and wellbeing. If your young person is feeling down or finding things are difficult, physical activity may be the last thing they feel like doing. But even small activities, like walking around the block, can help relieve stress and frustration, provide a good distraction from worrying thoughts, improve concentration and improve mood.

If your young person is struggling to get active, find a physical activity that you both enjoy and can do together (e.g. swimming, playing sports with friends or cycling) and make a plan to do it regularly.

4. Encourage a regular routineGetting a good night’s sleep helps young people to feel energised, focused and motivated.

Adolescence is a time when a number of changes to the “body clock” impact on sleeping patterns and young people are more likely to have problems with sleep. Developing a sleeping routine can help. Encourage your young person to

headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health under the Youth Mental Health Initiative.

wake up around the same time each day, get out of bed when they wake up, and go to bed around the same time each night.

Avoiding caffeine after lunchtime, having a quiet, dark and uncluttered bedroom and shutting down electronic devices before bed can also help them to get a good night’s sleep.

5. Encourage healthy eating habitsEating well doesn’t only reduce the risk of physical health problems, like heart disease and diabetes, but it can also help with sleeping patterns, energy levels, mood, and general health and wellbeing.

A good balanced diet with less junk food/lots of sugars and more vegies, fruit, whole grains and plenty of water will ensure your young person has all of the vitamins and minerals to help their body and brain function well.

6. Encourage play! Devoting time to just having fun can help to recharge your young person’s battery, revitalise their social networks and reduce stress and anxiety.
