BUDGET BLUESFinancial advice for graduatesKimberly McNeil | BG News Intern

Graduation can be an exciting time. For many, it comes with student loan debt. We can hope that the movement toward debt forgiveness continues to gain traction. But for now, financial advisors say paying down student loans and credit card debt should be a high priority for recent grads. Your credit score will determine your ability to do many things, and sometimes is even a factor in being selected for a job. Grads will want to be aware of how their credit score is doing.

Most loans do not require payment for six months after graduation. There are also deferments and payment arrangements available if needed. Do your research on your loans, and find out what rights and responsibilities you have. The most important thing is to communicate with your lenders.

Grads may also be facing some new bills. Some may be getting their first apartment which means they can expect rent, utilities and grocery bills. Grads will also need transportation. They will need to decide if they want the expenses of a car which include licenses, registration, insurance, repairs and gas. Grads who can opt for using public transportation will need to decide if it makes more financial sense to pay as they go or buy a pass.

There is a wealth of advice on the internet on creating a budget and planning for your financial future. There are a few things that all financial advisors seem to agree on:

1.An important first step, making a budget will show you exactly what you need and when you’ll need it. This will help you plan for all future expenses.

Make a budget

4.You never know when you’re going to need some emergency money, so building up your savings or a fund in case of emergencies only is a very important thought to keep on the backburner.

Build Savings or an Emergency Fund

5.Just as important as everything else here, be sure to take advantage of those employer benefits, especially 401k.

Take advantage of employer benefits

6.Over and above all, just be aware of it, and you should be fine.Budgeting your money and building credit can be intimidating for recent grads. But with a little research and planning it does not have to be painful or stressful. Make sure you do allow for some entertainment expenses or the occasional treat. With proper planning you can get by comfortably in the present while building toward future goals.

Be aware of your credit score

2.Set goals for yourself from a financial perspective, but keep them realistic. Make sure you reference your budget as you do so.

Set financial goals

3.This should be a priority on your list of expenses that need paid. The last thing you want is bad credit for missing a student loan payment.

LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM:Life advice from faculty to studentsBG News Staff

Lindsey AldrichInstructor for Department of Sociology

“Despite a global pandemic, everyone who is graduating this semester managed to survive and to thrive. Be proud of yourselves, be gentle with yourselves, be kind to others and just do the best you can. Focus on becoming the person you want to be and helping to create the kind of community you want to be a part of. That is how we are all going to heal and that is how we can do better as individuals and as a society.”

Robyn MillerInstructor for School of Human Movement, Sport and Leisure Studies

“The advice I would give students is to make sure you save money and do not get in debt that you cannot pay off. It is very important to make sure you create a budget and have money left over after expenses at the end of the month. Emergencies come up and it is important to have funds for these emergencies. As well as keep your credit rating high so when you buy a house or a car, you will receive the lowest interest rate as possible. Interest rates are directly tied to your credit score.”

Bob KlineCollege of Arts and Sciences Academic Adviser

“Failure is a part of learning. You learn from mistakes. Everyone fails at something. Learning from mistakes enables you to grow as a person, professional, partner, or friend. Learning how to fail is one of the most important things to learn during these formative years.”

Yanqin LuSchool of Media and Communication Assistant Professor

“I did not think much about personal financial management (e.g., retirement contribution, savings investment) until joining the BGSU faculty. I wish I could start planning earlier and be more financially literate. Given my personal experience, I suggest students take advantage of any possible opportunities and start learning personal financial basics as early as possible.”

Kristie FoellWorld Languages and Cultures Associate Professor

“Take the risks and do the things NOW, while you’re young! Whether it’s attending grad school in another state, working/studying/traveling overseas, or starting a business or a family, the things you do in your 20s will lay the foundation for the rest of your life. So whatever you’re passionate about, find a way and GO FOR IT! In my own life this meant heading to graduate school in California and lots of time spent in Germany and Austria perfecting my language skills, including a year with Fulbright in Vienna; all of that laid the foundations for my academic career.

R.G CravensPolitical Science Assistant Professor at California Polytechnic State University

“Based on my experience, I would advise students to live their lives authentically and find a community that supports them. Students who find a community in college, either through peer groups or student organizations, are more likely to graduate. Even as a faculty member, relocating to BG was made so much easier when I found a community of friends and colleagues. I stay in touch with them and miss them now that I’m in California!” n

Tiffany Knoell Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Pop Culture

“My primary advice to the graduating class of 2021 is be kind. No one knows another person’s struggles, so a little grace and awareness goes a long way.”

Music from 2017Alicia Kobasic | WBGU-FM Promotions Director

2017 had many songs that caught everyone’s attention and were huge hits. Here are 10 of the top songs of our graduating seniors’ freshmen year.

‘Despacito’ by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber

This song was everywhere in 2017. It was on constant radio rotation and was constantly stuck in people’s heads. You either loved this song or you hated it. According to Billboard, this song spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. This tied the record set by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men with their track “One Sweet Day.”

‘Bad Liar’ by Selena Gomez

This was Billboard’s top song of 2017 according to critics. This track samples “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads, which was seen as unexpected by many. This song was quirky and catchy. The chorus is one that will get stuck in your head. While this song was not Gomez’s biggest hit of the year, it was a stand out track.

‘Rockstar’ by Post Malone and 21 Savage

Post Malone launched into the spotlight with this 2017 hit. It spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100. Something about this song grabbed everyone’s attention and gave it a contentious radio play. It could have been the laidback, yet catchy beat on the song or maybe it was the lyrics that had everyone rapping along with Post Malone and 21 Savage. Whatever it was, it worked and made this song and Post Malone a success.

‘Bodak Yellow’ by Cardi B

Cardi B launched onto the music scene with Bodak Yellow. The song hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts. This was the second time a female rapper topped the all-genre list without any other credited artist in almost 20 years. This song was everywhere with its continuous radio play. It was the brash and fresh sound that launched Cardi B into stardom.

‘Thunder’ by Imagine Dragons

This song by Imagine Dragons is one that would get stuck in your head for sure. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard charts and spent a total of 41 weeks on the chart. The one word hook of, “thunder” repeated over and over again, was catchy and impossible to get out of your head. It was a bouncy and simple pop song designed to be sung along to.

‘Humble’ by Kendrick Lamar

This song gave Kendrick Lamar his first Hot 100 hit as a solo act according to Billboard. It peaked at No. 1 on Billboard and spent 30 weeks on the chart. The hook, “sit down/ be humble” became one of the most recognizable lines of the year.

‘Attention’ by Charlie Puth

Charlie Puth gave us another pop hit with this one. The funky bass line and catchy chorus work together to make this song a success. This track had everyone singing alone in their cars when it came on the radio. Everything from Puth’s voice, to the bass line, to the percussion works in this hit song’s favor.

‘1-800-273-8255’ by Logic featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid

This song was an emotional hit in 2017. This track pulled on everyone’s heart strings as it rose on the charts, reaching No. 3 on the Hot 100. It brought awareness to mental health and suicide as the lyrics of this song talk about struggling with mental health and contemplating suicide, as well as the title being the number for the suicide hotline.

Music‘Body Like a Back Road’ by Sam Hunt

Sam Hunt broke the Hot Country Songs streak for longest running at 34 weeks at No. 1. This song became the summertime song for fans of country and pop. This was the first new song from Hunt since 2014, and certainly launched him back onto the music scene. It even got him nominated for awards at the 2018 Grammys.

‘Shape of You’ by Ed Sheeran

This first single off of Ed Sheeran’s Divide album was a major success. It stayed in the top 10 for 33 weeks in a row, which was the longest run in the history of the Hot 100. This song mixed acoustic sounds with electronic dance beats to create a song that makes you want to dance.
