Felnex outline planning:Local Verdict It could bebetter!

This drawing from the planning document

appeared in the press on the morning of

the last Hackbridge Community Forum on

    May 12th, and dominated discussion.

In contrast to the painstaking public

consultation which formed the basis of the

    much-praised Hackbridge Masterplan,

the outline planning application seems to

have slipped in quietly by the back door.

Many local people feel cheated of having a

say, as the outline planning document

does not match with the high expectations

of the Hackbridge Masterplan its not

bad, but its not excellent, and bearing in

mind Hackbridges status as the UKs first

sustainable suburb, it needs to be the verybest of pioneering urban design.

Many local residents are highly committed to the area and want to see it develop in a way which provides us all

with pleasant and safe living environments, combined with places to shop and work and take our leisure. They

want effective transport links and good local services. The Hackbridge Masterplan envisages all these yet the

new plans seem somehow to miss the mark.

So to try to improve the plans by making some positive suggestions and also being involved right through the

ongoing developments in other parts of the area, a Hackbridge Planning Group has been formed look out for

notices of their meeting with borough planners (date not fixed as we go to press, but please contact Teresa at

[email protected] if you would like to be involved).

Make Hackbridge work for you come along to the Hackbridge Forum and look out for the Hackbridge website.

New building on Hackbridge Road:Editors correction:Last issue included drawings from Suttons website, but it seems these were notaccurate, and we have not been able to get correct ones for the Centrale development yet. However:

Affinity Sutton have provided information about their development at the corner of Corbet Close, which

will comprise 2 one bedroom bed homes, 27 two bedroom homes, 2 three bedroom homes and provision

for 25 parking spaces and 32 cycle storage spaces. All of the apartments are designed to achieve the

Governments Code of Sustainable Homes Level 4.The building design seeks to maximise daylight and

views to the south, with all flats having a south facing aspect.

Jef Saltman, Development Manager, for Affinity Sutton, said: The building is designed to be integrated

into the surrounding green environment .. [and has] designated communal gardens and car parking

    with access from Corbet Close.

produced food. The students are our new franchisees! its a great opportunity for them. As the produce is

grown down the road at Sutton Community Farm its also a great way for families to get fresh veg and cut

A Community Farm - a crazy idea that might just work?Anna Francis says:

Have you ever dreamt about owning a place in the country? An amazing opportunity has come up to buy35 acres of local land including an existing veg farm and nursery, woodlands, farm shop, bungalow, glasshouses and polytunnels to convert into a community farm for people to grow organic fruit and vegtogether, share skills, offer training to schools, disability groups and everyone else... and much, muchmore.

We are looking for people who want to share e.g. 780 to pledge 1500 each perhaps. We envisage thefarm would be run by the farm team including experienced growers, project manager, training staff andshop assistants. Quarterly steering group meetings would be held to discuss progress and allshareholders would be invited to the Annual General Meeting, as well as regular activity days and eventsand the opportunity to bring family and friends to visit their farm.

At this stage we only need to know if you are willing to pledge - please email me with your name and theamount. In the last few days (end of May 2011) we've already raised 560,000, so maybe we can do it?!Anna Francis, [email protected] 07939 060688.

Community shares: there are loads of examples of people getting together and buying farms, post offices, wind turbines etc. The way these shares work is that people invest a certain amount, get benefits such as

discounted produce, part own the farm / are part of a worthwhile project, get involved in activity days etc (ifdesired), vote at the AGM and the shares can be sold (for original price) if they need the money back.

Local charity BioRegional isworking on the Olympics, StephenEdwards reports:

We have been awarded funding by thegovernment to develop an exhibition centre inSutton the only one of its kind in the UKoutside the Olympic village - that will go behindthe scenes to show how London 2012 is

working to deliver the greenest Olympic Gamesand Paralympic Games ever. The One Planet Experience will open atBedZED in July 2011 and feature touch-screeninteractive exhibits, exhibition displays, andpersonal advice from an on-site environmentalcoach. The project has been awarded theprestigious Inspire mark by London 2012, andwill provide a high profile local link to theOlympic Games and Paralympic Games. InJuly and August 2012 we will be taking theexhibition to the Athletes Village during the

Games to inspire Olympic and Paralympicathletes to become environmental champions.

    Community Games Night is back!

We are currently offering badminton, internet, tablegames and refreshments at a special introductory priceof 1 per person.

In September we shall also be able to include:

That special Hackbridge stink:please lets get it sorted!

Local resident Stephanie was delighted with her move to Hackbridge until one day her house filled withthe (in)famous Hackbridge aroma. When I first spoke to my neighbours, most of them were reallysupportive and open about it. I found out how old the problem is. that back in the 1970s when the smellgot too bad, British Rail would spray perfume into the air of the railway station to improve it.

At the last Hackbridge Forum a representative from Viridor gave some explanation of one possible causeof the smell works being done to expand the composting capacity but residents were adamant that thesmell is more akin to rotting general household waste.

Viridor urge that we contact them whenever the smell hits, to enable them to sample and analysethe source. (Go to www.viridor.co.uk/contact.php) also please phone the Council on 020 8770 5070and also call the Environment Agency Freephone on 0800 80 70 60 Stephanie says to call both as itis really important that the Council and the Environment Agency can co ordinate investigation andenforcement if appropriate. VICAR'S CORNER

    On Sunday 5th

June I was standing with friends in hot

sunshine on the banks of the river Elbe, surrounded by

hundreds of brass band players. It was the closing service

of the biennial Kirchentag (Church Festival) with over

100,000 people at the worship service.

It was the end of a 5 day celebration, with hundreds of

events each day, spread throughout the city. I went to

discussions on the impact of China in modern Africa, and

on reconciliation work in South Africa and the former East

Germany. And I heard an amazing variety of music a

Brazilian folk mass, British gospel rock, 17th century brass

church music, jazz, and an open air classical oratorio by

Mendelssohn. Brass bands and rock groups played in the

    streets throughout the city.

It was also a poignant reminder of World War II. The

beautiful baroque buildings were all stained black, a resultof the devastating bombing we did on 13th

    February 1945,

which flattened the city, even though it had no industry

there. More people died that night that at Hiroshima.

Two weeks before, I had been at a conference on

reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians, hosted in

Coventry cathedral. The cathedral there had been burnt out

in the devastating German raids of November 1940. The

following morning a workman had tied together two of the

charred timbers to form a cross, and the provost had written

on the east wall the simple words, Father Forgive.

Those words were echoed by the Christians of Dresdenafter their night of horror. In the Roman Catholic

Cathedral, which was burnt out, there are two memorial

tablets which say:How the trouble began 1933

What sin achieved 1945, andEvery person meets Jesus. He can enter

our own life in order to overcome hatred.

As Jesus himself said, Forgive us our trespasses, as we

forgive those who trespass against us.

All of us are faced with the challenge of forgiveness. Ipray that the example of the churches of Coventry and

Dresden may inspire us not to let the past dictate the future.Andrew Roland
