Come to Say Good-bye to Yael Farber!

Our Community News is published monthly by the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley for the Jewish community in Michiana.

The mission of the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley is to serve the Jewish people—locally, in Israel, and through-out the world—

through coordinated fund raising, services, community-wide programming, and educational activities.

the many programs and servi ces we enjoy throughout the year. We are able to help local fami-lies and individuals as well as provide needed dollars in support of programs serving Jewish communi-ties around the world, and we are able to foster a per-sonal connection with Is-rael through our support of the Western Galilee and our incredible Shaliach program.

Annual Meeting highlights (continued from Page 1)

Election of Board & Officers: Anita Fishman, Bonny Hoover, Ruth Hutt, Melanie Brown, David Ravitch, Ilene New ,Terry Feldbaum, Mara Boettcher, Mitchell Wayne, Charles Simon. Not in the picture: Ina Rosenberg, Robert Feferman, Brian Kordansky, Barbara Lerman, Ben Silver, Vitaliy Soloveychik, and Rozi Wax.

Treasurer Mara Boettcher reported on the successful financial state of the Federa-tion, highlighting our new accounting procedures.

Our guest speaker An-drew Berlin drew our larg-est Annual Meeting atten-dance in recent memory. He charmingly spoke about his background, being Jewish, life as a businessman and his life-long love of baseball which lead to his investment in the Silver Hawks.

The 24th Robert Simon Leadership Development Award was presented to Robert Feferman during the program honoring our state legislators for their efforts to pass the Iran Contract legislation. It was a fitting moment to make the award, since Bob’s leadership in that arena has been so out-standing this past year.

The Simon Leadership Award was established in

1990 by Kurt and Tessye (of blessed memory) Simon in memory of their son. With this award, Bob will receive a grant that will allow him to attend the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly in Baltimore next November. At the GA, he will receive national recog-nition for his community leadership. Kurt Simon presented Bob with the

Last June we were honored by Jerry Silverman, the President of the Jew-ish Federations of North America (JFNA) as our keynote speaker for our annual meeting. His talk enti-tled “Dream the Possible Dream” was an enthusiastic embrace of Fed-eration’s such as ours. Our activities and programs during the past year show how much we are living the dream!

Our teen trip to Israel in June was a great experience for our older teens, and in July Camp Ideal began its 58th year of operation. Not only do we have our own Jewish children but we have also welcomed the out of town grandchildren of many of our Jewish community members.

Our Tzedakah Sunday was December 4th . At its conclu-sion we had approximately 85% of our 2012 campaign gifts in hand; the earliest we have reached this percentage level in recent mem-ory. By February, we closed the ac-tive phase of the Annual Campaign. “Israeli Solders Speak Out” was the headline in our February Our Com-munity News, announcing a visit from two IDF combat veterans whose mission is to “put a human face to the IDF uniform.” They spoke at Temple Beth-El in the morning and at Barbara and David Lerman’s in the afternoon. Thank you to all involved and especially to Brian Kordansky, Vitaliy Soloveychik and Mitch Wayne for their leadership on this program.

Our humanitarian aid mission to Cuba in February was a powerful, beautiful and meaningful experience for all who participated.

Jewish Federation: A year of living the possible dream

September saw the kickoff of our 2012 annual campaign. Under the capable leadership of Linda Mintz and Ron Cohen we conducted a 150 day campaign which achieved 93 % of its pre campaign goal. Our com-pliments to our campaign leader-ship, our campaign workers and our campaign supporters.

Our campaign kick off keynote speaker was Sophie Ambrose. Sophie shared with us her history as to how Birthright Israel helped her to discover her Jewish heritage an the impact this had on her life.

October saw the first of our Commu-nity Lunches during Sukkot and a Welcome Dinner for our new resi-dents.

In November an enthusiastic group attended a Hockey Night at Notre Dame, sponsored by the Men’s Divi-sion of the Annual Campaign.

March brought us our always well- received community Purim Carnival

as well as our Comedy N i g h t featuring c o m e -d i a n B e n j i Lovitt.

A CRC highlight this past March was Bishop Kevin Rhoades of the Fort Wayne, South Bend Diocese. The Bishop spoke of the importance of preserving our religious liberty. He expressed his concern for “attempts to marginalize religion in our society”. His remarks were fol-lowed by a lively question and an-swer session. Our thanks to Bob Fe-ferman and Barbara Lerman for their dedicated work on this project.

In April, our 2012 Yom HaShoah speaker was Jeannie Smith, the daughter of Polish rescuer Irene Gut OpDyke. Jennie’s talk about her mother’s experience emphasized that “one person can make a differ-

ence.”While in South Bend Jeannie spoke at the St. Joseph County Courthouse, students and faculty at Marian High School, to the Jewish community and to students at Stanley Clark School. Her mother’s story will have an impact on all who heard her for many years to come. Also in April we commemorated HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, and heard from journalist Gil Hoff-man. The somber remembrance was followed by our festive Yom HaAtz-maut celebration of Israel’s 64th birthday.

Our second annual Michiana Jewish Film Festival was a series of eight films shown over a four day period at Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Center for Performing Arts. May ended with a showing of Ira-nium, a documentary film that ex-plores the Iranian nuclear program as it pertains to strategic threats against the West, and Islamic funda-mentalism in Iran, (see CRC box be-low).

These are just some of the highlights from the past Jewish Federation year. It has been busy and exciting here at the Federation, and we look forward to another exuberant year.

Under the leadership of Bob Feferman, (right) the Community Relations Committee has made it a priority to educate our community about the threat of a nuclear Iran. Above are Matan Shamir of UANI, David Sklar of Indianapolis JCRC, Sen. Tom Wyss, Rep. David Niezgodski, Sen. John Broden, Nathan Carlton, UANI, who were honored at the showing of Ira-nium on May 31. The event was an opportunity to celebrate the unique part-nership created between state lawmakers, the Jewish community of Indiana, and the national organization United Against Nuclear Iran to promote Iran Contract Legislation. Indiana was the fourth state in the nation to pass the Iran Contract Legislation and a similar bill is now going through the Michi-gan state legislature , thanks to the efforts of Board members David Ravitch and Brian Kordansky.

For Ages 6 to 7 The Brothers Promise

By Frances Harber In this poignant retelling of a Talmudic story, siblings recall the promise each lovingly made to his father.

Picnic Shelter Upgrade

Just in time for Camp Ideal! Our preparations for Camp Ideal have included an up-

grade to our Picnic Shelter. The river rocks surrounding the shelter have been replaced by a concrete pad, adding nearly two feet to the pad. The gravel pathway to the picnic shelter is now a sidewalk.

“It will be so much easier to move equipment and sup-plies to the picnic shelter,” said Debby Grant. “We are very excited about this improvement to our outdoor campus.

The rocks and gravel were reused to shore up the Weinberg Rock identifying the play area.

Another upgrade is additional rubber mulch will be added to the playground area to cushion falls and help eliminate weeds.

The Federation also is forming a Re-Visioning Commit-tee to make suggestions for improvements and make-over's to the Federation building and campus that are needed as we enter its “teen years.” Watch for more information as we continue to grow.

Eighteen reasons why you should have Lea, next year’s Shlicha, over for a visit:

1. I met her and she is lovely 2. It doesn’t have to be for a Shabbat diner, it could be

any other day and it could be just for coffee. 3. Friday night by yourself is not fun! 4. Nothing makes you feel more at home than having

someone open their home to you. 5. You already know this, but she comes here all by her-

self and it’s not easy being so far away from your fam-ily and friends, for a whole year!

6. It’s also not easy, coming to a new place where every-thing is so different.

7. And everyone is new. 8. So it’s sort of a Mitzvah. 9. A real connection is formed after breaking bread to-

gether. 10. When was the last time you had an Israeli over for

dinner? 11. This is your chance to ask all you ever wondered

about (even hard questions) and maybe learn some-thing new about life in Israel.

12. A couple of questions you should ask Lea: What did she do in the army? Where did her family come to Israel from? And much more…

13. If you have a dog, Lea is a dog trainer, and she could give you some great advice.

14. Since it’s her first time living by herself, Lea is looking forward to learning how to cook, so invite her for the cooking part as well.

15. It doesn’t matter if you have kids at home or not, shlichim enjoy talking to adults just as much.

16. If you do have kids, I am sure they will enjoy this ex-perience!

17. I am sure you will enjoy it too! 18. Ok, so maybe I only have 17 reasons, but I am sure it’s

more than enough reasons, to make the move and have your Shlicha over.*

Anita Fishman is already planning Lea’s schedule, contact her if you are interested: [email protected] or call her at (H) 574-233-5574, ( C) 574-850-5155.

An invitation to dinner I am so very grateful that I was invited to many dinners

throughout my two years of shlichut here, so now it’s my turn to invite all of the St. Joseph Valley Jewish community over for dinner. I will be cooking for a change (with some professional help), and you will be eating. I couldn’t have thought of a better way to say thank and good bye. I really hope you can make it! See page 1 for more information.

There have been recipes that I have seen that are noted as being good for summer days when it is too hot to cook. I under-stand that. If it is really hot outside, you want to keep the house cool. Using the oven is not a very good way to keep the house cool. I really do under-stand. Yet, I have a prob-lem with that. More than anything else, summer (to me) represents fresh pro-duce. There is no such thing as going to the farmer’s market too often. I love that place. And I have friends who garden who will share their surplus. There are such wonderful things growing around here in the summer. And my favorite method of preparation is – roasting.

Roasting usually com-bines high heat with lots of minutes. Obviously this isn’t a good way to keep the kitchen cool. But the things it does for your pro-duce! Whatever natural flavor and sweetness a vegetable has, it will be enhanced incredibly by roasting. All you really need to add is salt, pepper, and a little bit of olive oil. Wow. If you want even

more “wow”, add some garlic too. I have a great recipe for garlic roasted sweet potatoes. I’ll give you that recipe in the fall. This month we will roast tomatoes.

The time to use toma-toes is when they are in season. Out of season to-matoes are not very excit-ing. Sometimes an out-of -season tomato looks ane-mic and you know that it isn’t even worth it. And if you find a bright red to-mato in February, I can pretty much guarantee that it can’t compete with the bright red tomato of summer. This is THE time to enjoy tomatoes in sal-ads, pasta dishes, or on their own. And if you’ve never roasted a tomato you’re in for a real treat. Plus, tomatoes require less heat than other vegetables. So roasting tomatoes won’t heat up your kitchen as much as roast-ing a sweet potato or even a zucchini.

Most summers I make a batch of tomato sauce. I don’t can products, but I would like to start doing that someday. (If you like to can, let me know. Maybe I can come and

watch or help and learn the ropes of canning.) Anyway, I make this amazing tomato sauce and use it on pasta. I usually freeze about half of it for use at a later time. I know that grocery stores offer all sorts of tomato based sauces where all you have to do is open a jar. I won’t try to defend my DIY rec-ipe – just try it and you will understand why it is worthwhile to make a sauce from scratch. Enjoy!

ROASTED TOMATO GARLIC SAUCE

2 Tbsp. olive oil 3 ½ lb. tomatoes 1-2 bulbs garlic 1 tsp. salt 2 tsp. red wine vinegar pepper, to taste Line a baking sheet

with foil. Brush the foil with one tablespoon of oil. Cut the tomatoes in half and squeeze out and dis-card the seeds. Put the tomatoes on the baking sheet cut side up. Cut the top off of the bulbs of gar-lic and place cut side up on the baking sheet with the tomatoes. Drizzle the remaining oil over the to-matoes. Bake at 375° for 30 minutes. Drain the liq-uid from the pan and set aside. Bake for an addi-tional 30 minutes. Cool. When the tomatoes are cool enough to handle, remove the skins and dis-card. Squeeze the garlic cloves from the bulbs.

Use a food processor to puree the tomatoes, garlic, drained liquid, and re-maining ingredients. Sea-son to taste.

Here is the best tomato

recipe that I have. Hands down. The good thing about this recipe is that the tomatoes roast at the (relatively) low tempera-ture of 300 degrees. The bad thing is that they roast for about three hours. I often use the smaller plumb tomatoes (Roma) and reduce the baking time a bit. Once I made this recipe using grape tomatoes and reduced the baking time considerably. Those were so good! They made a great topping for salad. If anyone gives you a bunch of tomatoes that they are giving away be-cause their garden was productive beyond their needs, please try this rec-ipe.

CARAMELIZED TOMATOES

4 lg. tomatoes (or 8 Ro-mas) 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 ½ Tbsp. olive oil ½ tsp. pepper, to taste ¼ tsp. salt, to taste

Cut the tomatoes in half. Place the tomatoes, cut side up, in a baking dish. Bake at 300 degrees for 1½ hours. Combine the remaining ingredients and brush over the tomatoes. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 1 ½ to 2 hours.

As you know from the last newsletter, I (Tammie Blackman Brown) have taken the position as superinten-dent of the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery Association (HOCA) – the cemetery at Logan and Jefferson. You may ask why I would consider working for a cemetery. It cer-tainly didn’t appear to be an obvious natural fit for my college degree in advertising and 20+ years of experience in Public Relations!

Nonetheless, it made perfect sense to me. Several years ago, my husband, Alan and I, with some members of his family went to Prague, Czech Republic. As we have done in many foreign countries, we wanted to visit the Jewish cemetery – and we knew ahead of time the “Old Cemetery” in Prague was different. However, I was not prepared for the cemetery in Prague. Nothing could ever prepare one for THIS cemetery.

The “Old Cemetery” dates back to1478; it is Europe’s oldest “surviving” Jewish cemetery and is located in the area once identified as the Jewish ghetto. Jewish people in Prague were not allowed to bury their dead outside the ghetto, so they had to adapt and built the tombs one on top of the other.

It is disturbing, appalling, SHOCKING and more to see tombs on 12 layers and to imagine that in this area there are more than 100,000 people buried in about 12,000 graves. It is a virtual sea of tilted, crooked, fallen, broken, decaying tombstones – yet, standing in this cemetery brought me an eerie peace and calmness know-ing these are “my people” … but how I wished the look of destruction didn’t rock my peace. How I wished “my people” could rest in peace. I realized the thoughts of “resting in peace” should not be taken for granted.

Fast forward to less than a year ago, when vandalism – tombstones knocked down and more -- occurred at our cemetery, it made me flashback to Prague. Now, in the SOUTH BEND area, MY PEOPLE were no longer resting in peace – disturbing, appalling and SHOCKING. I knew I could make a difference. This is what led me to taking this position – I care about our Jewish community. As you know, all stones are up and I have been working on many other improvements and ongoing care. It has been and I hope will continue to be an honor to help preserve the beauty of this cemetery.

To every member of our community, I thank you for calling me to tell me what you would like different, bet-ter, cleaned, improved and more. DO NOT ever apolo-gize for “bothering” me – your eyes help me see and your requests help me learn how to do a better job.

Always feel free to contact me. HOCA rents space from the Jewish Federation, thus I can be reached at 574-233-1164.

Kurt Simon: A Life of Service

WNIT, Public Broadcasting for all Michiana, is presenting its newest documentary Kurt Simon: A Life of Service, told by Kurt Simon himself. He talks about his first days in South Bend, and his journey to the present day. Kurt recounts how, through hard work and dedica-tion, he became the CEO of one of the largest wholesale foods and industrial supplies distribu-

tors in the area. Throughout the documentary we’ll also meet community members and friends who have been touched by Kurt Simon’s generosity and leadership. The Jewish Federation is honored to be hosting the Premier Showing of this film in September before it begins airing on WNIT in celebration of Kurt’s 99th Birthday.

Please contact Jody Freid 574-286-0452 or email [email protected] for more information on how you can help honor Kurt through a donation to WNIT to support this documentary.

There’s a lot going on at MJHS, and we want you to know we’ve been doing and what we’re planning for the coming months. We also want to know what interests you and your ideas for programs and activities because we want MJHS to have something for everyone -- whether you’re 9 or 90, and whether you’ve lived in Michiana for 6 months or 60 years.

Here are a few highlights:

Family and Youth Activities One of MJHS’s priorities is to

make the histories of our families and our community come alive for people of all ages. Whether it’s grandchildren interviewing their grandparents about what life was like ‘in the olden days’ (before computers); seniors describing what Michigan Street and Granger looked like 60 years ago; learning about our history by helping with ongoing projects -- like youth vol-unteers Sarah Feldbaum and Stanley Rozenblit are doing -- we want everyone to appreciate our heritage and to work with congre-gations, religious schools, etc.

Restored chandelier installed at the Sons of Israel at The Cove

The beautiful chandelier that graced the interior of the Sons of Israel Synagogue has been restored and will be reinstalled.

The Jewish community is invited

to the Chandelier Lighting at 6 PM on Monday, July 2, 2012 at the for-mer Sons of Israel Synagogue on William St. adjacent to Coveleski Stadium.

Although the historic building that was once a home for Jewish worship has been repurposed and is now the team store for the South Bend Silver Hawks, the building it-self has been restored to its original architectural design. The beautiful chandelier that was a focal point of the building’s interior has been re-stored by Andrew Berlin, the new owner of the Silver Hawks, and will be installed and will again be a source of beauty.

MIDWEST TORAH CENTER’S LUNCH & LEARN. Summertime is a great time to join us on July 11 & 25 for our Lunch & Learns. Each session is a self-contained class, which means that even if you miss one, you can still feel comfortable coming to another. The topics are always timely and will really excite your imagination. Our sessions run from 12-1 PM. If you have any ques-tions and/or would like to suggest topics for a Lunch & Learn, please contact me at rabbinebel@midwesttorah. org or call us at 234-9092.

NEW CLASS IN TALMUD BEGINS. While we have

already started the next tractate entitled “Beitzah,” it’s never too late to join us. Presently, we are discussing the laws of the holidays. This is a fun tractate and one you are encouraged to join. The classes are in English and no previous experience is necessary. We meet, as usual, on Sunday at 10:30 AM, following minyan & breakfast.

NEW CLASS –GATES OF REPENTANCE. Rabbi Yonah of Gerondi lived in the 11th century in Catalonia. He was the most prominent pupil of Solomon of Mont-pellier, the leader of the opponents of Maimonides' phi-losophical works. Gerondi was the instigator of the pub-lic burning of Maimonides' writings by order of the au-thorities at Paris in 1233. Subsequently when twenty-four wagon-loads of Talmuds were burned at the same place, Gerondi publicly admitted that he had been wrong in all his acts against Maimonides. Some suggest that as an act of repentance, he authored the Gates to Repentance, which is the book that we are presently studying. Come join us every Tuesday at 7 PM!

NCSY PIZZA & PARSHA. Do you like Pizza? Are you between 13 and 18? Do you like to hang out with friends? Then, come on down to New York Boys Pizze-ria every Sunday at 12:30 PM and join the fun. Besides the great food and drinks, we also discuss ethical dilem-mas that we encounter. If you have yet to try us out, now is the time to join us. “Like” “Sr NCSY South Bend” on Facebook for the most up-to-date information on this and all of our other programs.

MIDWEST TORAH CENTER SHABBATON. Our

next Shabbaton is scheduled for July 6 & 7 . We will be-gin at 7:25 PM with services and then on to enjoying a sumptious Shabbat meal. Join us for all the singing, words of Torah, great discussion and camaraderie. Fol-lowing the meal on Shabbat morning we will explore the question of “Why are we still mourning over the Tem-ple?” Looking forward to seeing you.

It’s time to renew voluntary and gift subscriptions!

Our Community NewsOur Community NewsOur Community News Voluntary Subscriptions & AdvertisingVoluntary Subscriptions & AdvertisingVoluntary Subscriptions & Advertising

It’s that time of year again, when we ask our readers to consider send-ing in a voluntary subscription to the Our Community News. Your financial support helps us cover the cost of mailing the newsletter to all Jewish households in our community.

As we have done in the past, new and renewing subscribers will re-ceive a free checkbook size Jewish calendar. (Subscriptions must be re-ceived by August 20, 2012 to receive a calendar.)

You may also wish to send a gift subscription to a family member who now lives out of town. Here are a few of the letters we have re-ceived from our out-of-town readers:

Thank you so much for putting me on

the mailing list for the newsletter of the Federation. There are many names that I

do not recognize, but I take great pride in reading about the many activities. The South Bend Jewish Community has really grown and I take great pride that so much is offered to the local people. The Jewish Film Festival is a great op-portunity to view special films.

Thank you again, Sincerely, Ida Malki, Chicago Just received the wonderful newspaper

yesterday and so enjoyed reading every article even though I rarely view a name I know. Your community does so much; you are truly amazing and I wish I were there for so many of the activities. Hon-estly I can’t get over it. I really can't say enough compliments to you for all you do as the executive director.

Have a lovely summer. Margie Baer, Boca Raton, Florida

We look forward to hearing from you! Voluntary and Gift subscription rates are listed below, but any dona-tion amount is welcome to help us meet our expenses.
