Monday 8/22 Continue with daily quotation; we will read aloud and analyze the three narrative

essays for clues on how we can write our own; time permitting, I will introduce the writing process, and we’ll start prewriting your narrative essay—what is prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing?

HW: review notes; IF we started to prewrite your essay, you should draft your essay; a typed copy with correct format (we’ll go over in class) is due: Friday, August 26—50 points. Period 1 will sign up for Conference #1 this week; Period 8 will sign up for Conference #1 next week.

Tuesday 8/23 Finish reading and discussing narrative essays. Introduce Essay #1—we will

review the writing process and start to prewrite. HW: review notes from class; reading each night in The Catcher in the Rye will be announced in class (TBA); remember to take notes on characters, conflicts, themes, symbols––reading quizzes are to be expected.

Conference 1. 9/6 Discuss what happened through Chapter 13; then we will read and analyze

Chapter 14. HW: read to the end of Chapter 15. Wednesday 9/7 We will discuss essential elements of what happened in The Catcher in the Rye

through Chapter 15. *John Green’s interpretation of the first half of Catcher. HW: read to the end of Chapter 16. Thursday 9/8 We will continue to read and analyze The Catcher in the Rye. Today’s literary

topic for review: bildungsroman. Then: class work on motifs. We will break into groups of three. Each group will be assigned a motif. You must find a direct quote that supports the motif and explain what possible symbolic meanings may connect to it––whether it is an object, idea, image, theme, or any other narrative element. The motif list: Holden’s cap; ducks in the lagoon; adolescent view of sex; death; grief; relationships between teachers and students; Holden’s idea of what is “phony;” alienation; intelligent versus dumb; innocence/childhood as an ideal way to be; the adult world.

We will continue to read and analyze The Catcher in the Rye. Review: bildungsroman. Then: class work on motifs. We will break into groups of three. Each group will be assigned a motif. Monday Guidance Presentation of Pre-PSAT. 9/19 Final discussion of The Catcher in the Rye (show John Green’s final observations

of the book)—with final commentary on symbols, motifs, and other thematic observations in terms of whether or not the novel qualifies as a bildungsroman.

HW: each night: review next 10 words from The Catcher in the Rye from the vocab packet—quiz #2 on Friday; each night, review your notes from viewing, and you can begin to answer any of the five questions you have chosen. Remember: you must attach ALL of your notes from viewing with your 3 pages of response—that will be part of your grade.

Tuesday 9/20 Introduction of final work on The Catcher in the Rye: compare and contrast with

Finding Forrester. Go over question packet—how to view, take notes, and discuss the eight areas of inquiry into both the novel and the film. Time permitting—view the beginning of the film.

HW: see above. Wednesday 9/21 Before viewing: discuss the use of symbols (basketball, birds, the knife, etc…)

and motifs in both film and novel. Also, discuss Salinger’s life compared to what we are learning about Forrester. View film and take notes.

HW: see above. Thursday 9/22 Before viewing: discuss the different schools; discuss, too, the important female

characters in both. View film and take notes. HW: see above. Friday 9/23 Vocab Quiz #2. Before viewing: what are we learning about writing from the

film? Discuss any other themes that you see developing in the film. View film and take notes. HW: type up your 3 pages of response—make sure to number each paragraph; attach all your notes to your responses: DUE MONDAY, September 26.

Conference 2 for next week. 10/3 Review Friday’s introduction to Macbeth: war, power, and greed. Tragedy is:

complex. Who are the main characters? We will read and analyze the play. We will continue to read and analyze Macbeth. What does Aristotle say about tragedy?

HW: each night: review for Vocab Quiz 3 (vocabulary for The Catcher in the Rye); read the Shakespeare “made easy” right side of pages for what we studied in class; try to complete what you can in your study guide.

Tuesday 10/4 We will read and analyze Macbeth; depending on what we have completed, we

may watch/study the film version of the play. HW: Each day—whatever notes we take in class, please review; also, spend
