Phil Matson’s Memorial Service Sermon

“In my Father’s House are many rooms. I go to prepare a place for you….and where I am you will be also.” My first memory of Phil was in Sunday School. I was in 5th grade, 10 years old, and Phil was my Sunday School teacher at Wicker Park church. On Sundays, we didn’t often go to worship after Sunday School. My mom’s hands were quite full with five boys between 2 and 10 years old, and keeping a peaceful sense of worship with us in the back pew was a test of patience too great to bear weekly. Then one Sunday, Phil asked me if I would like to go to church and sit with him. He showed me how to follow the service, pointed out what page we were on in the hymnal. Lutheran liturgy is tricky: hymn numbers, page numbers and Psalm numbers, all in different parts of the hymnal, keep people on their toes. Phil made me feel ‘grown up, worshipping like an adult with my own hymnal, worshiping ‘in our Father’s House” with my Sunday School teacher. “In my Father’s House are many rooms. I go to prepare a place for you.” Jesus speaks with his disciples for the last time at dinner in the Upper Room. In a matter of a few hours, he will be arrested, beaten, sentenced to death on the cross. But Jesus doesn’t speak with a sense of dread or foreboding. He doesn’t speak fearfully or with sadness at his impending doom. Jesus speaks with confidence. There is a sense of purpose and a plan--God’s direction even in this moment of darkness. Jesus tells his disciples, “I go to prepare a place for you, as if the coming arrest and crucifixion, death and burial were simply a door to walk through to the next room where preparations will be made. Jesus had such confidence, such assurance in God’s presence and power in His life. “Where I am, you will be also”—this is the faith Phil knew and lived in his life. Phil was not one to wear his faith on his sleeve, or act like he was better than anyone else. Phil possessed a quiet faith, an assured sense of God’s presence in his life. Phil shared his faith in numerous acts of generosity-a friend to many, a mentor, many people thought of him as a second ‘Dad’. Phil put his faith into action, not boasting action but the action of ‘loving his neighbor’ as his way to show his ‘Love of God’. I’m willing to bet everyone here today has a story of Phil’s impact in their life; of a life well lived in faith and friendship.

When Phil faced major heart surgery six or seven years ago, he did so with the same calm assurance and confidence in God that he practiced every day. He was nervous; he was concerned. But before they took him in he told me he was not afraid. He trusted in God; what is best. The last time I saw Phil was at the Easter service. The church was packed and the walls resounded with the hymns of Christ’s resurrection. The sermon for Easter poised the question: When does fear turn to joy? When does sorrow turn to rejoicing? The women who came to the tomb that Easter morning came to bury Jesus, because that is what you do when someone dies. We’re born and we die--a beginning and an end. Burial closes a life--it is final. But God surprised them. Jesus starts a new pattern. You are born, you die and you rise from the grave to begin a new life in God’s Kingdom. Surprised! Their fear turned to joy; their sorrow to rejoicing. It was a ‘Resurrection’ moment- a taste of salvation to come. I have come to believe that we don’t have to wait until we die to experience God’s salvation in our lives. We can have a taste of ‘resurrection’ now. A glimpse beyond the grave. A heartfelt moment of God’s presence here. Phil brought one such moment into my life-a 10 year old boy sitting in church, worshiping like an adult thanks to the generous kindness of his Sunday School teacher. I think Phil brought such moments into other’s lives as well. Now every moment for Phil is a resurrection moment. Now Phil is in his Father’s House, where he has always belonged. When does sorrow turn to rejoicing? Now. Today. For in God’s House, Christ has already prepared Phil’s place and a place for you and me. Amen.

Fourth Sunday After Pentecost (June 21, 2015) I still remember the very first time I saw Lake Michigan. It was nearly six years ago, and I was visiting Chicago to tour the school that I would soon attend for seminary, the University of Chicago. During my visit I found myself with some time to spare, and so I walked from the University's campus in Hyde Park to Promontory Point, a beautiful park that juts out into Lake Michigan. When I first caught sight of the lake, I couldn't believe it. It was a perfect October day, and under a clear, blue sky, the smooth, light blue water stretched to the city's skyline and then beyond, off into the distance as far as the eye could see until it transformed into a perfectly straight line at the horizon. Like many others who see the lake for the first time, I asked myself: "Is this really a lake? It seems more like an ocean, stretching off into the distance as far as the eye could see." As far as I could tell, standing where I was there on the shore, the lake might well have stretched off into the distance forever. A year later, as I was getting newly settled in the city, I had the opportunity to see Lake Michigan from a very different vantage point. Like any good tourist or newcomer, I visited the Sears Tower and took the elevator all the way up to the Skydeck on the 103rd floor. It was another clear day, and I marveled at the incredible view of the city, of Lake Michigan, and oh--what's that on the other side of the lake? It's Indiana, the map on the wall told me. The weather was so clear that day that from the 103rd floor of the Sears Tower, I could see all the way across Lake Michigan to Indiana. My vantage point from the 103rd floor was very different than my perspective standing on the shore at Promontory Point one year earlier. While from the shore it looked like the lake went on forever, stretching endlessly to the horizon, from the 103rd floor I could see the truth: that the lake does not in fact go on forever, that it has a shore on the other side that's actually not that far away in Indiana. Today's gospel reading also takes place at a lake, although it's a lake much smaller than Lake Michigan, a lake known as the Sea of Galilee. Jesus and his disciples are crossing the lake in a small boat when a great storm comes upon them. As the wind howls around them and waves wash into the boat and fill it with water, the disciples panic; they think that the boat will surely sink and they will drown in the lake. It's almost as if they've forgotten that God's own Son is right there in the boat with them. Jesus isn't concerned at all about what's going on; in fact, he's sleeping right through it! But the panicked disciples wake him up, "Teacher, don't you care that we're about to die?" And of course Jesus wakes up and miraculously calms the wind and the sea. But for me it's what happens next that's really the linchpin of the story: When I used to hear this story as a child, I'd always expect Jesus to say, "Thanks for waking me up there so I could save us! Otherwise I might have slept through it all and we'd have all drowned."

Page 11: Click on the excerpt below to read Pastor Zook's sermon ...storage.cloversites.com/concordialutheranchurch1... · Concordia on Whipple Annex, 33oo N. Whipple Sunday, June 28th Sunday,

But he actually says something quite different--Jesus asks the disciples, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" I can only imagine that they were flabbergasted, not only because Jesus had just performed a stunning miracle, calming the raging sea and howling wind, but also because Jesus was telling them that despite the raging sea and howling wind and the fact that their boat was filling up with water -- they should not be afraid. How? How can this be possible when storms rage all around us? And yet--Jesus was not afraid, despite the fierce storm, and he doesn't think that the disciples should have been afraid, either. Jesus was not afraid because he saw something different than what the disciples saw. While the disciples couldn't see past the storm clouds and whitecaps raging around them, Jesus saw past it all to the truth of God's ultimate plan--and so he was at peace, completely free from fear and in fact, blissfully asleep. That storm around the boat was very real, and the disciples' fear was very real, but if they had been able to see past it all through the eyes of faith, to see God's ultimate plan, like Jesus their trust in God would have brought them peace instead of fear. If like Jesus they had been able to see the view from the 103rd floor, the big picture view of the ultimate truth of God's plan for them and the world--they would not have been afraid. From inside that boat, nothing seemed more real than that storm, just as from the shore Lake Michigan looks like it goes on forever even though from the 103rd floor we can see that it actually doesn't. Yet there is nonetheless a deeper reality that can be glimpsed through the eyes of faith, a 103rd floor view that reveals a different, truer horizon of God's plan for our lives and our world. And when through faith we can shoot up to the 103rd floor and glimpse this deeper, truer plan and glimpse what God is really up to and realize that that matters more than anything else, more than whatever storms rage around us--then and only then can we know God's deep peace that passes all understanding. Storms rage all around us in our lives and in our world, and they can be truly awful and terrifying and heartbreaking. Relationships strain and break. Loved ones die. Sickness torments us and those we love. Anxiety and worry and stress consume our waking moments and maybe even our dreams. Horrific violence shocks us and terrifies us, as when a young man possessed by racist hatred walks into a church bible study and starts shooting. These are the very real storms we face, these are the waves that wash over our boat and begin to fill it with water and threaten to sink it. The promise of the gospel is that through it all, no matter how dark it gets, no matter how frightened or anxious or heartbroken or lost we feel, God is right there with us in the boat, strengthening us for the journey, comforting us, and giving us eyes of faith to see God's plan for our lives and our world, giving us eyes of faith to see God working in the midst of our despair to bring new life out of death. And when we see this, when we

get that 103rd floor view of what God is up to, when we catch a glimpse of God at work in our lives and our world, then, even in the midst of the storm, we feel God's peace. AMEN.

Earl Mattis Bengtson

March 28, 1921-June 15, 2015

Earl Mattis Bengtson was born in Chicago on March 28, 1921, to Rev. Carl Oscar

Bengtson and his wife Edith (Matson). Earl was the youngest of four, including his two

brothers Andy and John and his adopted sister Siama. Earl was baptized and raised in

Immanuel Lutheran Church (Elmdale Avenue), where his father was pastor. He attended

the public school and graduated from Senn High School in Chicago in 1938. He

graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, in 1943 and started his

studies at the Augustana Seminary. He chaired the seminary lecture committee, and

served as president of the local Religion & Labor Foundation. He graduated from the

seminary in 1946 and was ordained as an Augustana Synod pastor that June in Duluth,

Minnesota.

Earl married Deloris Louis Hansen on May 3, 1952, in Chicago. They had three sons.

Earl was preceded in death by his brothers Andy and John, by his sister Siama, and by his

wife. He is survived by his son, Thomas (Kevin Carney); son Jonathan (Robin Gessler)

and their children Eric (Ruth Ann Whittington), Joshua, and Elizabeth; and son Mark

(Donna Pate), and Mark's children Erin (Brian Cassady) and their daughter Thea (Earl’s

great-granddaughter), and Justin (Jeaneen Tierney).

Rev. Bengtson served Westdala Evangelical Lutheran Church, now Troy Evangelical

Lutheran Church in Troy, Idaho, from 1946 to 1948. While there he was active in

establishing Lutherhaven, a camp for youth and adults on Lake Coeur d’Alene. His

second parish was St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he served

from 1948 to 1954. While in Kenosha he served as the first president of the Protestant

Youth Council. His third parish was Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church of

Houston, Texas, where he was pastor from 1954-1961. In Houston he was on the board

and became vice president of the Lutheran Welfare Society of Texas, and was a member

of the Commission on Social Issues of the Augustana Church. Pastor Bengtson was in

the audience when presidential candidate John Kennedy came to town and spoke to a

group of Protestant clergy to allay fears that as President he would be taking orders from

the Pope. Pastor Bengtson’s last full-time parish was Concordia Evangelical Lutheran

Church (Seeley Avenue) in Chicago, Illinois. In August 1963, Pastor Bengtson flew to

Washington D. C. for a day and participated in the “March on Washington”. While in

Chicago, he was active in ecumenical affair and citizen councils. While in Chicago, for

many years, Deloris was a public school teacher of hearing impaired children at Bell

School. Earl was chair of the Bell School Council for several years. He joined the Lions

Club. He served on the committee for American Missions of the Illinois Synod and on

the board of Augustana College.

Pastor Bengtson was assistant to the pastor at Nebo Lutheran Church in Chicago from

1980 to 1985. He officially retired in 1983. He was assistant to the pastor at St. James

Page 14: Click on the excerpt below to read Pastor Zook's sermon ...storage.cloversites.com/concordialutheranchurch1... · Concordia on Whipple Annex, 33oo N. Whipple Sunday, June 28th Sunday,

Lutheran Church (Foster Avenue) in Chicago from 1983 to 1989. He was interim pastor

at Christ Lutheran Church in Melrose Park, Illinois, from 1984 to 1990. He was a

substitute pastor and preacher at various churches from 1980 to 2000.

Earl and Deloris moved to the Sedgebrook community for seniors in Lincolnshire,

Illinois in July 2005. They were members of Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit,

Lincolnshire, Illinois.

Earl enjoyed thinking, reading, and talking about God, the church and society. He was a

staunch but liberal Lutheran. Earl deeply held democratic ideals. He believed in

America. He held that religious leaders and their followers must have as goals love,

compassion, and justice. For Earl, democracy and faith were fundamentally compatible.

To think otherwise only demeaned faith.

Earl was a loving father and husband. He was kind and caring. The only time he raised

his voice was in the pulpit; the closest he came to swearing was to say ‘hell’, but that

only happened from the pulpit, too.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and they with him. He will be

sorely missed.
