Communications & Marketing Birds, birds, amazing birds! Our Division was focused on the 5th annual Birds of a Feather Fest and its wrap-up this week. It was a very successful event. More than 500 people joined us at the Community Center and at various parks to enjoy nature and experience the excellent birding and active outdoor lifestyle that Palm Coast has to offer.

Highlights included the Flagler County Big Day trip, where guides David and Dee Simpson and their birds broke the record for a Flagler County Big Day – with 93 bird species in one day! The Gulls Three Ways trip took participants to three places in Flagler and Volusia counties to see seagulls and the group had a bonus on the way back: getting to see an endangered right whale off the coast.

National Audubon Society Chief Network Officer David Ringer traveled here from New York City for our keynote address, where he shared his own experiences as a birder and about how development, habitat loss and climate changes affect bird populations. He provided information on national and state strategies for protecting birds, and he provided information on what regular people can do to help – such as planting more native plants in their yards and providing bird houses, baths and feeders to help migratory birds on their journey.

Ringer’s talk was educational and inspiring! He explained the value of birds in the big environmental picture, not to mention in how they delight us. Many in attendance said they felt empowered to help in their own back yards and also to pay closer attention to regional, state and national issues that impact birds and other wildlife.

During the week, staff took part in the Woods Truck driving course. The Florida Agriculture Museum was kind enough to allow us on their property. The Brunch with the Chiefs event was a great success.

We shared a video with our families that highlights the departments pride and ownership, all while showcasing the calls we run, the training we do, & the jokesters we can be. Woods Truck Training

This week our firefighters are doing training on

the Woods trucks. These former military

vehicles allow us to get deep into the woods to

fight wildfires. Staff drove through a

predetermined course with sugar sand, hard

pack, and multiple turns. Utilizing off road

terrain driving tactics to facilitate firefighting.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Our seniors enjoyed a festive Valentine’s Sweetheart Luncheon complete with lunch, a

photo booth, music and dancing, as well as Brooks Rehabilitation offering free assessments. All of the pictures

The Birds of a Feather Fest wrapped up this week and brought in many birding enthusiasts. This year, some of

the event activities integrated with our Parks & Rec programs. For example, we had a special Lunch N’ Lecture

and a special Discover Trip for the event. The event was also hosted at the Palm Coast Community Center,

which made for a nice venue.

Our Recreation Supervisor of Marketing is hard at work on our summer activity guide, which will be out in a few

weeks. It’s going to be another busy and exciting summer. The theme for NRPA’s July is Parks and Recreation

Month is “Game On!” and will showcase the fun side of Parks & Rec!

The average water demand for this week was 7.746 million gallons per day.

The average wastewater flow for the week was 7.338 million gallons per day.

The unidirectional flushing operation that originally was scheduled for February 25th in Section 59 has been postponed due to the need to conduct conventional flushing during the day to mitigate other concerns related to water quality.

Water Distribution crews installed 32 new water meters.

There are 186 new meter installations pending with 44 lots cleared and an average installation time of 4 weeks.

Wastewater Operations installed 8 new PEP tanks and replaced 2 tanks.

There are 28 new PEP tanks pending.

Currently all new tanks are being installed within 6 days of site ready.

There were 40 calls after hours.

Water Distribution crews replaced 6 water service lines, repaired 5 manifolds, completed 10 meter pit adjustments/replacements and tested and repaired 267 backflow preventers.

Wastewater crews replaced 23 PEP pumps, 1 PEP chamber, 3 ball valves and boxes, 21 floats, 5 cleanout caps and 2 back lids. Crews installed 7 new PEP pump assemblies, 12 PEP pump electric assemblies and 7 risers. Repaired 1 service lateral and 1 PEP main. Also inspected via CCTV 15,212 feet of gravity sewer, 70 manholes and completed 3 annual pump station services.

On February 7th, staff from various utility divisions attended a lime sludge study kickoff meeting with McKim and Creed at Water Treatment Plant #1.

Wastewater staff completed wiring installation on new Mission units at pump stations 14-1, OK-1, and 28-1.

Staff from Wastewater Treatment Plant #1 worked on installing new blades on the new brush aerator shaft to prepare for the installation by PBM Constructors.

Contractor completed startup of new Vapex Odor Control System located a Wastewater Treatment Plant #1.

Staff from Wastewater Treatment Plant #1 continue work on the renovation of Clarifier #5. PBM Constructors installed a new center column for the drum unit. A crew member from PBM was securely positioned on top of the center column to perform a survey using a transit. The instrument was used to precisely measure the center column to assure the correct placement and height of the column.

Staff from Wastewater Treatment Plant #1 assisted SGS Contracting Services in the installation of a special covering for the wastewater pumps electrical cords. The special covering will protect the cords from the corrosive nature of the ozone. The pumps are located in the headworks wetwell. The wet-wells are in a confined space which is 14 feet deep. To ensure the safety of the contractors, the pit is isolated to prevent sewage that may enter during the operation. Fresh air is pumped down into the pit and meters are used to make sure the area has enough oxygen for breathing and is safe for entry.

Do you love cornhole? Two tourneys set for winter/spring season at Tennis Center Palm Coast – After a successful launch in the fall, Palm Coast Parks & Recreation is hosting two more cornhole tournaments both on Saturdays: Feb. 23 and April 6. It’s time to sign your team up! The tournament for two-person teams will begin at 9 a.m. at the Palm Coast Tennis Center, 1290 Belle Terre Pkwy. The tournament is for ages 15 and up. Bags and boards are provided, and the cost to participate is $20 per team. Sign up you and your partner today at www.parksandrec.fun/athletics. The first-, second- and third-place teams will receive medals. Cornhole is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing bean bags at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the platform scores 1 point. Play continues until a team or player reaches (or exceeds) the score of 21. Pet owners in the United States are increasingly treating their pets as treasured members of their families, feeding them expensive gourmet foods, putting them in doggie day care, or throwing them birthday parties. So it is not surprising that owners would consider pet health insurance to help offset the costs of medical care. Pet health insurance is a way to help defray veterinary costs and help to avoid “economic euthanasia”, where a pet is euthanized because the owner can’t afford the cost of treatment. At the end of 2017, approximately 2 million pets in the U.S. and Canada were insured by some form of pet health insurance according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association. The big question then is, what type of coverage does my pet need? Pet owners should always understand how the insurance works and what policies cover prior to purchasing them. Insurance varies by insurer and by policy with premiums that depend on the cost of veterinary care in your area, your pet’s age and breed. Insurance premiums may be lower when the pet is young and healthy. Donation Opportunities: The Flagler Humane Society Thrift Store always accepts donations. They cannot take in any computers/printers or large appliances. Call for our new store location where we collect donations. “General Donations” can be dropped off anytime at your convenience. Everett is a mature 10 year old lab mix that is already neutered

and up to date on all vaccinations. He does not show well in his cage as he gets defensive when people

are staring at him. Get him out and you will see a totally different

dog. He is very loving and deserves a home to call his own for his golden years. He is great on a leash and gets along with
