Second Quarter, 2014

Carlos Rivera

It was in September of 1993 that Madonna started going across the river Chamelecon to see patients at the school at La Barra de Cham-elecon. One of the first patients she saw was Carlos Rivera, at the time a very malnourished baby with severe anemia as well as an infection, and struggling to survive. Madonna treated him for the infection and ane-mia and followed up with many prayers. He did survive! Pictured here is Carlos in the clinic last month. Looking at him now, you would hard-ly believe that he was such a sick baby. God still does answer prayers.

Mother’s DayFor Mother’s Day, the chil-

dred presented several dramas and some of the young ladies sang some special numbers. We have a fine group of faith-ful women. The following Sunday the congregation rent-ed a bus and took the mothers to the beach and a park west of Puerto Cortes. Madonna baked nearly 50 chocolate and strawberry cupcakes for the women to enjoy on their outing.

New ChristianOur most recent baptism was Marlen Peri, the wife of Edwin Velas-

quez. Edwin is the son of Mirna Lopez and Javier Velasquez. His dad was murdered several years ago and it was a very sad time for the family. Edwin’s paternal grandmother is Blasina Licona, one of our most faithful Christian women. Last year several of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and grandchildren-in-law were baptized. Sometimes it seems like at least a fourth of our congregation are related to Hermana Blasina in some way. What a legacy she is leaving by her faithfulness.

Our minister, Reyno, talking to Marlen just before her baptism.

The younger girls alsoparticipated.

100th BirthdayOur women recently went to the home of Eva Mateo to help her

celebrate her 100th birthday. As far as we know, she is the first per-son living in Las Brisas to live to be 100. The women of the con-gregation made a big pot of rice with chicken and Madonna baked a strawberry and a chocolate sheet cake and Pepsi was brought for a drink. After singing some hymns, Lourdes Sandoval de Mejia gave a devotional and we sang “Happy Birthday” in Spanish before ev-eryone was served rice, cake and Pepsi Cola. With the women and her great, great, great and grandchildren, there were probably some 60 people gathered inside and outside. It was a fun afternoon. Eva at one time attended the Pentecostal Church. She still makes tortillas and cuts firewood with a machete, but doesn’t attend church any more.
