What a blessing furlough was!! We arrived late Monday night, May 14th, due to a late arrival in San Pedro Sula by Delta. But, what service we had in Atlanta! A young black man pushed both of our wheelchairs through the airport to immigration and customs and to where we would get our next flight. Then two young ladies pushed us to the plane to head to Indianapolis and wheelchairs awaited us there. They took us right to Madonna’s sister and brother-in-law’s car at the parking garage. The next day we drove to Tipton where Madonna renewed her Indiana driver’s license and John tried to renew his, but since it had been expired so long, he had to take a written test and failed it. So Madonna had to do the driving. It wasn’t until about two weeks before our return to Honduras that we found a current license for John buried under other things on a desk in our room. He had renewed it two years ago and we told Marilyn to keep it and we all forgot about it. He found it in time to help Madonna when we drove to Western Illinois and Eastern Missouri the first part of August.

On May 17th, we left Indiana and drove to Louisville, Kentucky, to spend the night with Jerry and Marietta Smith. Madonna worked with the Smiths at Mashoko and they had visited us in Honduras. From there we

Furlough, May 14th through July 11th

drove to Tennes-see to Emmanuel Christian Semi-nary and spent the night in guest quarters there on the 18th. Mike Sweeney, the President of Em-manuel and his wife, Linda, took

us out to eat on Friday night and then to brunch on Saturday morning and later took us to First Christian Church, Johnson City, for the graduation services for Emmanuel. Madonna was the speaker for the graduation and then was presented with the James A. Garfield Award for Distinguished Service in World Mission. Johnson from Franklin, Tennessee; and Ed and Patty Coo-per from Glen Alpine, North Carolina, came to share in the celebration. Madonna’s recent book was on sale as well; so after the service she signed several books.

From Emmanuel we drove to Bristol, Tennessee, to the home of Lamar Talbert from the Central Christian Church. Bob and Louise Glover took John and Madonna out to eat on Saturday night and on Sunday morning Madonna spoke to some of the Sunday school classes at the Central Christian Church. On Sunday afternoon John and Madonna drove to Elizabethton, Tennessee, to spend the night with Betty Sam-mon and, while there, visited with her sister, Gerry Latham at the nursing home where she is living now. On Monday we met Eleanor Daniel at the Olive Garden in Johnson City for lunch and then drove on to Seymour, Tennessee, where we spent four nights with David and Margaret Eubanks. During that visit, we enjoyed going to Johnson University to attend some of the sessions of the Senior Saints in the Smokies.

and Rebecca Mireles to see Beck and Alfredo’s new baby daughter and also to visit with Bill and Margy Hoff who also were on furlough from Honduras. Zach, Becka’s son, was very proud of his new sis-ter. We also enjoyed a meal with Joel and Judy Rood at a unique restaurant in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

One day we drove into Knoxville to visit Mission Ser-vices and enjoyed visiting with Reggie Hundley, Georgia Sharpe, and Bill Topley. We were sorry to miss Cheryl El-liott who does such an excellent job putting our newsletter together. After our visit there we went to Oak Ridge to visit Seth and Mary May Wheatley, cousins of Madonna, and en-joyed a meal with them.

Our last evening with the Eubanks, Margaret made her famous Baked Alaska and invited several people who were attending Senior Saints to their home where we had our sack lunches and then the delicious dessert.

Indiana, and spent the night with Chuck Kelley, yet another missionary with whom Madonna served at Chidamoyo Mis-sion. Christine Vijil, Chuck’s daughter and who had also served in Honduras with Madonna, cooked supper and we enjoyed our visit with Christine and her three children, Ga-briella, Carson, and Kaitlin.

We arrived back to the old home place in Indiana on Sat-urday, June 2nd, and Madonna spoke at Normanda Chris-tian on Sunday, June 3rd, and the women had a delicious potluck meal after the service. Fred and Patsy Moore came from Cincinnati for the service and spent the night with us at Danny and Marilyn’s home. Danny and Marilyn were in Florida on vacation.

John and Madonna attended the Alumni Banquet for Prairie High School on June 9th which was held at Tri-Cen-tral High School.

Sunday, June 10th, Madonna spoke at Kempton Chris-tian Church, Kempton, Indiana, and then enjoyed a delicious meal with Phil and Linda Boyer and their children, Aaron and Bethany, and Linda’s mother. Linda and Bethany had visited John and Madonna in Honduras a year ago.

From Seymour, we drove to Maryville where we had four nights with Thelma Perkins; and, on Sunday, the 27th of May, spoke at First Christian Church, Maryville, Tennes-see. On Tuesday, the 29th, we headed north toward Indiana and spent Tuesday night with Frances Johnson, with whom Madonna had served at Mashoko. Frances took John and Madonna out to a colorful Mexican restaurant and her friend, Pat Webster, joined us.

The next night we were with Mary Helen Sandefur in Madisonville, Kentucky, and enjoyed a meal with her and her son, Steve and his wife, Denise. Mary Helen had been Madonna’s forwarding agent for over 15 years when she was in Rhodesia and India. From there we drove to Sullivan,

On June 13th, we drove to South of Indianapolis to have a meal with Phillip and Margaret Ho and their son, Jerry. The Hos have been missionaries in Shillong, India, for near-ly 50 years. We had visited them on our round-the-world trip in 1989.

We were at Normanda on Father’s Day and then Marilyn had several people in for a meal and we got a good picture of Madonna’s oldest sister, Marianna, and her husband, Don, sitting in the swing on the front porch.

On Monday evening, June 18th we had a meal with Bob

and Denise “Nisi” Pru-ett Seely at the Cracker Barrel in Kokomo. De-nise is the only daughter of Dennis and Lucy Pru-ett with whom Madonna served at Mashoko and Madonna was a baby-sitter for Denise.

The following day we drove to Cincinnati, Ohio where we spent the night with Fred and Pat-sy Moore and enjoyed visiting with their daugh-ter, Stephanie, her hus-band, Dwight, and some of their children. Fred and Patsy live in a duplex and on the second floor, on the other side, they rent rooms to Cincinnati Christian University stu-dents. What a surprise when visiting with stu-dents to find out one of them was the daughter of David Thurman. Ma-donna had known David

as a little boy at Mashoko in the 60’s.After the night with Fred and Patsy, we drove to a differ-

ent part of Cincinnati to spend the night with Dave and Eva Grubbs. Madonna had worked with the Grubbs at Mashoko for a short time in 1983.

Leaving the Grubbs on our way back to Indiana, we stopped in Au-rora, Indiana to visit with Marshall and Bea Hills. Marshall was getting ready to leave, so we had a short visit with him and a longer visit with Bea.

Marilyn had invited some of Madonna’s graduating class from Prairie for a visit and snacks. What John and Ma-donna didn’t know was that later in the day, she had invited neighbors, friends, and relatives to give us an early surprise 25th anniversary celebration. Nearly 40 people gathered to surprise us -- and it was a surprise!!

served with Jim and Joyce at Masho-ko in 1983 and with Gloria when she did an internship at Mashoko in the 60’s. Cindy had visited Madonna in Honduras in 2000.

On Saturday, the 30th, we drove from Bloomington to Mooresville, Indiana, where we had lunch with Norma Thurman, her son, David, and daughter, Diana White. Madon-na had served with the Thur-mas at Mashoko in the 60’s. From Mooresville we drove to Pitts-boro, Indiana, where we visited

Madonna shared about our min-istry at Jerome Christian Church.

On Tuesday, June 26th, John and Madonna met Dick Blose at the Jim Dandy Restaurant in Tipton. Dick and Madonna had been classmates at Johnson.

On Thursday, June 28th, we drove to Bloomington, Indiana, to spend a couple of nights with Mike and Vonora Bish-op. We had some excitement on Thursday evening at the

Indian restaurant when Mike had a problem and had to be taken to the emergency room. He was back home the next day. On Friday we had lunch with Lynn Johnson in Bloomington. Madonna had known Lynn as a boy at Mashoko

The next day we drove to beyond Rainbow Chris-tian Camp to visit with Rod and Beverly Cameron. Rod and Beverly had served in the Zambezi Valley at the time Madonna was at Mashoko. For many years Rod was the Manager of Rainbow Christian Camp.

On Sunday, June 24th,

in the 60’s and he, his wife, Sally, who is a doctor, and their two daughters had visited John and Madonna in Honduras.

After having lunch with Lynn we drove to the home of Dr. Jim Frasure and visited with him, his wife, Joyce, their two daughters, Kathy and Cindy, Dr. Gloria Cobb, Joyce’s sister and met five of their grandchildren. Madonna had

On Sunday morn-ing, July 1st, Madonna shared with the con-gregation at West Point Christian Church near

Russiaville, Indiana, and then enjoyed a delicious meal at the home of Marlene Deason, a cousin, and other cousins came and enjoyed the meal, too.

On Tuesday, July 3rd, we drove to Quincy, Illinois to spend the night with Henry and Betty Pratt. Betty is Madon-na’s first cousin and Henry and Betty promoted Madonna’s ministry in all the congergations where they served.

On Wednesday, we drove across the Mississippi River to Shelbyville, Missouri, to visit with Al (Sonny) and Annette Hamilton, Pete and Fran Laughren, and Dale and Sonja Hawkins. Sonny had had heart surgery and following the surgery had a lot of complications including a MRSA infec-tion, so he was still recuperating from surgery and still being fed through a stomach tube. Annette has had back problems for some time, so isn’t able to walk without the help of a walker. Fran is the Hamilton’s oldest daughter and she and Pete served for over 20 years in South Africa. Sonja is the second oldest daughter and her husband, Dale, is the Direc-tor of Outreach International. Madonna had been at Johnson

with Sonny and Annette and had worked with them in Phoe-nix, Arizona, starting a Black congregation in South Phoe-nix. Sonny started Pioneer Bible Translators and they have served in many different countries -- South Africa, Uganda, Puerto Rico, and Singapore, just to name a few. We enjoyed a delicious 4th of July meal with them and other friends and returned to the home place on July 5th.

On Friday evening, the 6th of July, we went to the Faith Church of Christ and enjoyed our time there with Lois Stout who has been a promoter of missions there for many years and also enjoyed seeing Paul and Rickie Clark, missionar-ies to Osaka, Japan. We also enjoyed Paul’s presentation of their ministry there in Japan and also Mongolia.

On Saturday afternoon we met John and Polly Mullen, long time friends from Lafayette, Indiana and Ed and Becky McKinney, who now live in Hawaii, but who used to live in Lafayette, for a meal at Treeces restaurant in Rossville, Indiana.

On Sunday, July 8th, Madonna shared with the Burlington Church of Christ and later we en-joyed a meal in Kokomo, Indiana with members of the missions committee and the minister of the congregation, Dave Os-born.

On Monday, the 9th of August, Vera Mush-rush and Donna Web-ster picked us up to take us to the big dairy farm in Northwest Indiana. We stopped on the way to have a meal at a Cracker Bar-rel in Lafayette, Indiana. What an interesting experience to see these cows on a carousel being milked in eight minutes. That was only one part of our interesting day that ended with some delicious ice cream.

We had Tuesday to pack up and returned to Honduras on July 11th.

warding agent, Norma Alderfer, who has served in this ca-pacity since 1984 when M a d o n n a first went to Honduras. Norma has a good sense of humor and on our last trip to visit her and Larry, she present-ed Madonna with another Garfield award -- Garfield the cat.

Danny and Marilyn NashWe are also thankful for Danny and Marilyn who keep

a bedroom ready for us for each furlough. They also have a television in our room and Marilyn did our laundry for us most of the time we were there and gave us delicious meals. And, they meet us at the airport and take us back there as we return to Honduras.

Back Home in HondurasIt has been good to be back home in Las Brisas. Mark

Hoff met us at the airport and then took us to his home where we picked up our car and enjoyed visiting with Joy. It took Ada, the young lady who cleaned for us, a few hours to get the dusting and sweeping and mopping done, but our house is nice and clean. Madonna has been busy making birthday cakes for women who had birthdays while she was gone and had started taking her turn teaching the Sunday School les-son on Sunday morning and is back to seeing patients at the clinic in the afternoon. John is back carrying in water and washing dishes. Our next newsletter will have more news of our ministry.
