What a year 2019 was for CAWA!

Nationals and State Team

ACF 2019 Nationals in Perth was amazing! It featured competition at its highest level at the ideal venue, Kingsway Christian College Auditorium.

There was such a positive atmosphere from the Opening Ceremony to the Celebration Function and it was fantastic to see the WA community embracing Nationals – either as a spectator or a volunteer.

An event such as this takes an enormous amount of work behind the scenes. I would like to acknowledge the WA Nationals Committee:-

Co- Convenors Faye Walmsley and Lisa Ruecroft Treasurer Melissa Murrowood Secretary Jeanette Beckett Stage Manager Christine Polglaze Celebration Function Mel Fettes and Amanda Pickersgill Merchandise Jenni Cangemi and Kellie Cercarelli Sponsorship Kellie Cercarelli Volunteer Coordinator Liz Zappia Opening Ceremony Coaches Natalie Byass, Hayley Moir and Jessica Millson

All our WA State Teams and representatives performed their hearts out in their home State with great results! Many thanks to the Personnel, volunteers, Officials, Coaches and of course our State Team Participants for all your efforts.

Thank you to one and all for making the ACF 2019 Nationals Perth a successful event!

Frangipani Challenge

In September, CAWA’s inaugural Junior Frangipani Challenge Team travelled to Darwin to compete in the Frangipani Challenge. It was an awesome experience for both team members and personnel. To come away with a win, was a bonus.

A huge thank you to the 11 families, the coaches (Christine Polglaze and Jacinta Appleton) and the Frangipani Team Manager, Jodie Appleton for their willingness to embrace the Frangipani adventure.

Competitions

Opportunities presented to all our competing and non-competing members to participate and shine.

Taste of the Stage State Championships Competitions Graceful Solo (Hills and CAWA) Future Stars Betty Fitzpatrick Competitions Solos and Duos

Caliskills

A record number of participants took part in Caliskills in 2019 including one Bronze Medallist, two Silver Medallists and two Gold Medallists.

Louisa Humphrey received an outstanding result for her Gold Medal Honours Performance- congratulations!

2019 RAC Sports Star Awards

The 2019 RAC Sports Star Awards (held February 2020 at Optus Stadium) recognising our talented individuals, teams, coaches and officials. This year Hannah Whittome (CAWA’s nominee for the Junior Sports Star) was asked to assist in the televised presentation of awards.

Congratulations to Christine Polglaze for being a winner of the highly prestigious Roobix Service to Sport Award – May Campbell Medal. Truly well-deserved for the number of years of commitment, passion and service Christine has dedicated to Calisthenics in WA and nationally. CAWA is beyond proud!

Calisthenics Promotion

In early June Channel 10 broadcasted their Sports Segment at our Swan Park Theatre. Hills Intermediates were featured practicing their routines as well as live interviews conducted. It was a fabulous avenue to showcase and raise awareness of Calisthenics, the 2019 ACF Nationals in Perth and our Theatre.

Successful Holiday Programs (presented by Healthway) and advertising campaigns as well as performances at The Royal Show and participation in the Channel 7 Christmas Pageant; making them community aware of our wonderful sport.

The above only touches on the extraordinary amount of effort put into Calisthenics in WA by a large number of individuals – it truly is inspiring!

Finally I would like to thank you all for making Calisthenics possible in Western Australia and contributing to our sport’s healthy position. Bring on 2020 for Calisthenics in WA!

Kind Regards

Sandra Gosling CAWA President

Treasurer – Rob Farrelly

Presented herewith is the audited financial report for consideration of the members. The report has been audited by Anderson Munro & Wyllie who conducted the audit for a second year. The Financial Position of CAWA is recorded in the Audited copy attached to this report. When reading these reports any comments detailed in the Audit report need to be taken into consideration.

All compliance aspects for the Association with the ATO for Taxation and Superannuation are current and up to date.

Cash and reserves at the end of 2019 were:

CAWA Cheque $14,367.47 CAWA Reserve $763,527.15 Total CAWA $777,894.62

Over the past four years the Association’s financial position has turned around from a loss of -$47424 in 2016 to a profit of $36,061.91. Income increased mainly due to increasing external theatre hire, good attendance at events and a profit from running the Nationals in 2019. The resultant profit for the year will now allow us to provision for a major lighting upgrade in the next few years and repairs and maintenance.

CAWA are extremely fortunate with continuing DLGSCI funding and sponsorship from Healthway. We understand we will receive a total of $60,000.00 from these two sources in 2020. The grant and sponsorship has allowed us to run our office and Development Area.

Budgets for 2020 are currently in the process of being reviewed with the respective committees and a full association budget has been set.

Thank you to Lorraine, Greer, Lee and Warren for their support during the year.

To Chris Bull and her ticket box team, thank you!

To everyone who volunteers their time, a big thank you!

CAWA continued to support State Team during 2019 covering the cost of trials, concert, and honorariums paid to ST Manager and ST Coach Mentor. Thank you to Andy Plummer for his work as Treasurer for State Team.

During 2019 Ridge Securities Pty Ltd continued to provide bookkeeping services to the Association, covering Payroll, accounts, invoicing, BAS Agent services and compliance and audit journals.

During 2019 the following honorariums were paid • State Team Manager (Lisa Farrelly) -$2000.00 • State Team Mentor Coach (Sacha Lee) - $1200.00 • State Team Mentor Coach (Natalie Scott)- $1200.00; and • Caliskills Medal training Karen Quinn- $150.00 per medal participant capped at

$500.00 During 2020 the following honorariums are proposed for approval to be paid • State Team Manager (Kristen Gibson) -$2000.00 • State Team Mentor Coach (Gaye Parker)- $1500.00 • Caliskills Medal training Karen Quinn- $150.00 per medal participant capped at

$500.00 • Adjudicators - between $ 24,000 and $ 26,000.

We are still in negotiation with City of Swan in relation to our Lease and expect that we will see some changes in this area during 2020. There is an ongoing review of the kiosk as well as a current review of casual wage rates.

Having joined the BOM late in 2019 I would like to thank the BOM members for your support and assistance. A big thank you to Lillian Kluge for her support and assistance with the Treasurer’s position.

We really are fortunate in having such a great family working together for CAWA (Inc.) as a whole.

A huge thank you to Coaches, Competitors, Adjudicators and all Volunteers – as per previous years everyone has worked together for another great Calisthenic year in 2019.

To the wonderful Competitions Committee Members thank you for your continued support, particularly those long standing members. Your support is always most appreciated.

To Sandra O’Keefe, Karen Quinn, Jenny Atkinson, Christine Polglaze, Glenys Stade, Kaye Hanson, Greer Hancock and Lorraine Woodley an extra special thank you for all your support. CAWA(Inc.) are so fortunate to have people like you involved in our sport.

MOST GRACEFUL SOLO GIRL COMPETITION

Entries for Most Graceful Solo Girl numbers increased once again and the competition ran very smoothly.

Again, incorrect ages and competitors names were evident. Once again, there were too many late entries- some up to 3 & 4 weeks late!

BETTY FITZPATRICK COMPETITIONS & STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thank you to all Clubs for a great effort in getting these entry forms in on time and for following the format of entry forms.

A reminder that for team competition entry forms one form is to be completed for each team. ie Team 1 and 2 etc. must be completed on separate forms. Also ensure that a club contact name and number are entered on each team form as well as the team number.

A reminder that Rhythmical Aesthetic titles must be entered on the original entry form as they are required for Betty Fitzpatrick competition - otherwise a late entry fee will apply.

All A Club Fancy titles are required to be forwarded to the Chairperson of Competitions ([email protected]) in one email by the due date otherwise a late entry fee will apply.

Clubs, please ensure that all Coaches are aware of the due date and give their Fancy titles to the Head Coach or a designated club person prior to this date to send through in one club email.

There are still some clubs who are not reading the instructions before they fill out these entry forms – in particular putting a ‘X’ where they should be putting a ‘√’!

Any team entry forms not completed correctly will be returned to the Club concerned and the Club could be liable for a late entry fee if the form is not corrected and resubmitted by the closing date.

SOLO/DUO COMPETITIONS

Numbers for Solo Duos increased again making for some very long days.

Unfortunately, there were far too many late entries for Solo/Duos in 2019.

Closing dates for competitions are well advertised ahead of time so there should be no excuse for late entries.

Please, I ask that clubs and coaches continually remind parents and competitors that it would be most appreciated if they could take the time to read and ensure that they complete on line entries correctly. Incorrect birth dates, ages, competitors’ names and

Page 29: Calisthenics Association of Western Australia Inc Annual ......In 2019, the Board of Management welcomed Rob Farrelly to his role as Treasurer. Rob brings a wealth of experience to

Calisthenics Association of Western Australia Annual General Meeting 2020

Coaches’ names are still being entered on line which then takes up time contacting the parent/competitor to ensure the competitor is put into the correct age group and that the correct name is printed in the program - this in turn also delays the publication of times for sections.

A little bit of time at this point will save many hours of volunteers’ time at a later point.

Clubs, Parents and Competitors need to be aware that Late Entry fees for all competition entries were introduced a few years ago in the hope that parents/competitors would register on time to help alleviate the stress on volunteers who have many tasks to fulfil prior to the start of any competition.

Initially, the introduction of late entry fees did lessen the number of late entries, however, the last couple of years there have been far too many late entries.

For this reason the Board of Management have agreed to accept late entries on Try Booking for Graceful Solo and Solo/Duo competitions for one week only. After this date no further late entries will be accepted.

If each person here tonight at the AGM would personally approach one person from their club and encourage them to volunteer at some time during the year and only half of the people that were approached agreed to volunteer that would be a great achievement for CAWA (Inc).

We all need to try hard to increase the number of parents volunteering in some way to help CAWA (Inc) throughout 2020.

The more volunteers we have the lighter the load on everyone and the less chance we have of ‘burnout’! After all, it is their children that we are supporting!

I have found the personal approach seems to be the best way to get new volunteers. Let them know it is a great way to meet and share ideas with other Club Members as well as making new friendships and supporting their children.

To everyone, I wish you a wonderful, happy and enjoyable 2020 with CAWA. (Inc.)

Chairperson Theatre Management – Lee Masters

Our current success acknowledges the vision of our earliest members.

Calisthenics WA and the business of running a theatre are the result of a strategy set up in the 1980’s. As a business, we operate the theatre to fulfil our constitutional purpose and be a positive influence in the community. We benefit from being able to hold our events when we want and save our parents at least $120,000 pa if we had to hire a venue for all our listed events. The message is important to share.

The 2019 financial results confirm the original strategy still holds true, even in a challenging market place.

A lot of people are required to help us run an efficient and professional business to support CAWA.

I acknowledge the support of the following :

• Warren and Daniel who spend time preparing the theatre for each event, • Lorraine and Louisa who make the Kiosk look good, when they are out the back, • Lisa Cugini and her team that helps keep the place clean and watches Warren for

me, • Andy Plummer as the Stage Managers Manager, and in 2020 our Events Co-

Ordinator • The ticket Box team – They magically turn up and makes it run like clockwork. • The TMC guys and girls that help share the burden and volunteer their time when

I call out that a roster needs to be filled. • I noticed these are the same people I thanked last year. They are dedicated and

never complain. They represent the Calisthenics vision in action.

The above volunteers carry the bulk of the workload and we owe them our appreciation as they go out of their way to deal with issues and make the events run smoothly. You can find them in black shirts with dust and cobwebs on their clothes.

Each club is allowed to have a representative at this committee level. It’s the main way Dads can participate. If you have a dad that gets too much rest by sleeping while their daughter is performing, then let me know and I will include them with an invite to join us.

This will be my final year as the TMC Chairperson, however I will remain in the background for a while longer.

Chairperson Development – Trish Robinson

2019 has seen incredible growth for Calisthenics in Western Australia.

Member Affiliations for CAWA continued to increase in 2019 with 1322 members, significantly up from 1137 in 2018. With the continuing popularity of the school holiday programs we’re anticipating greater numbers into 2020. This ongoing growth, particularly in the younger sections, is very promising.

The following graph shows the statistics for growth over the last four years with strong results as we head into a new decade, which promises to be even stronger. Also included is a chart showing the breakdown of numbers in each section.

Page 32: Calisthenics Association of Western Australia Inc Annual ......In 2019, the Board of Management welcomed Rob Farrelly to his role as Treasurer. Rob brings a wealth of experience to

Calisthenics Association of Western Australia Annual General Meeting 2020

Ongoing funding from both Healthway and Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries has enabled programs which reflect significant growth for Calisthenics. The School Holiday program held in January and October each year continues to bring greater awareness to our sport, plus we have a transition of participants moving into club teams. The chart below shows the 2019 School Holiday Program and Term 4 Promotion results.

1,054 children registered for the School Holiday Programs in 2019 – 542 in January 2019 and 512 in October 2019 – with an average of 30 children in each workshop. Quite a few Clubs engaged the Term 4 Promotion and saw additional increase to their numbers.

Many thanks to the Coaches and Clubs who have come on board to help make the School Holiday Program such a great success. The feedback from parents of participants is very positive with many stating both the workshops in general and coaching teams on the day, as excellent.

The annual Buggybuddys campaign has also worked really well. Feedback from workshop participation surveys are showing that is the leading source of advertising that parents are seeing.

Page 33: Calisthenics Association of Western Australia Inc Annual ......In 2019, the Board of Management welcomed Rob Farrelly to his role as Treasurer. Rob brings a wealth of experience to

Our Social Media marketing is also gaining traction. We have grown our Instagram account to 1,339 followers and will be concentrating on growing this again in 2020 along with our Facebook audience which currently sits at around 2,090 followers.

We would like to acknowledge the Club run competitions and concerts from Applecross Calisthenics Club (Taste of the Stage concert), Hills District Calisthenics Club (Hills Graceful Competitions) and both West Coast Calisthenics Club and Athena Calisthenics Club (Future Stars Concert) which all encourage both club participation and individual competitors. Thank you to the Clubs as well as the individuals for their time and continued support.

Thank you to all the volunteers in Calisthenics – so many hours of service that not only sustains Calisthenics in WA, but assists in helping the Development Team achieve their goals.

Many, many thanks go to our Development Officer, Greer Hancock, who works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the growth of Calisthenics. Greer’s hard work is very visible at a state level, but she also puts many hours into helping individual Clubs with a valuable collection of promotional material and assists Clubs in determining strategies to help increase their membership. On top of this Greer is also on hand to help Clubs with ideas for fundraising and raising club awareness in communities as well as general support as required. Greer has proven to be invaluable in her role across all aspects of Development from Club level to Government Departments and I have no doubt the new decade will be incredibly promising for CAWA with Greer as Development Officer. I would like to congratulate Greer on embracing this role with so much passion and dedication to grow our sport.

We would like to wish all clubs the very best for a great year.

2019 was a successful year for the WA Branch and members are to be congratulated for maintaining their accreditation and demonstrating passion and commitment to their role as an Adjudicator. The WA branch is comprised of positive and dedicated members who are always striving to advance our sport. We are fortunate to have a wealth of knowledge amongst our WA members and everyone continues to make valuable contributions at all meetings and seminars.

Six meetings and four seminars were held in 2019. The seminars presented were: Consensus moderation of apparatus items, Appreciation of Choreography & Musical Choice, Public Speaking and Visual Perception Thanks to everyone who gave time to prepare and present these seminars.

Competitions held in 2019 that were officiated by Eastern States Adjudicators were:

Kate Loveridge (SA), Susan Anderson (VIC), Cheryle Ablett (SA) and Sarah Carthew (VIC).

Throughout 2019 many members accepted interstate appointments. Dawn Chester will be the WA Adjudicator at the 2020 Nationals in Darwin and Margaret Bourne has accepted the 2020 Senior competition in Ballarat.

As in previous years Adjudicators have been actively involved with representation on CAWA Board of Management, Competitions Committee, Rules Committee, CAWA Coaches Association, the Adjudicator’s Advisory Board and also the Examiners Advisory Board for Calisthenics Skills. Thank you to everyone involved in these committees as it is an extra workload.

The ASCA WA Branch would like to thank the Competitions Committee headed by Gail Benson for their work in the organisation and running of all CAWA competitions. We are also very appreciative of the work carried out by Lee Masters and the Theatre Management Committee who work continually to improve and maintain the facilities available to all members. The time spent by these people to run competitions is very much appreciated by our members. WA Adjudicators would also like to thank Sandra O’Keefe, Jenny Atkinson, Glenys Stade, Kaye Hanson and their band of workers for the time and commitment they give to ensure efficiency and accuracy when running the competitions. We are very appreciative of the wonderful work you do.

As an Adjudicating body we also commend the time and effort given by our wonderful coaches to produce inspiring work for our beautiful WA Cali girls. We very much appreciate the commitment and creativity from the talented WA Coaches.

Many thanks must also go to the CAWA Board of Management led by Sandra Gosling, for the ongoing continued support given to WA Adjudicators throughout 2019. As always this is very much appreciated.

ASCA WA Branch is looking forward to another successful Calisthenics year in 2020.

Calisthenics Skills – Stephanie Humphrey

2019 was again a busy and exciting year for WA Skills.

WA had 354 exam applicants, 48 more than the previous year. Of that number, 334 candidates presented for exams. They included a Gold Medal Honours candidate, two Gold Medal candidates, two Silver Medal candidates and a Bronze Medal candidate.

For all clubs (including Narrogin, Rockingham and Mandurah) Test, Grade and Medal exams were held in November and December 2019, and January 2020. Over half our candidates (198) sat Tests 1, 2 and 3 and 129 candidates sat Grades 1 to 4. WA had a 99.4% pass rate.

To ease the heavy weekend examining load on our local examiners two weekday (evening) ‘Grade’ exam sessions took place. These were favourably supported by both candidates and parents.

The highlight of 2019 must be our Gold Medal Honours candidate Louisa Humphrey who (with her coach Karen Quinn) successfully achieved the highest accolade of all, Gold Medal Honours which was performed in front of a very appreciative audience on Sunday, November 10th. Diane Winterling (from South Australia) was delighted to return to WA. She departed Perth enthused and inspired by Louisa’s outstanding performance and overwhelmed with the dedication shown to the Medal programme by Louisa and her coach, Karen Quinn. The number of hours and nights spent training beforehand reflects just a small portion of their passion and commitment to Skills.

On 25th January this year, our Medal exams continued. We were again very fortunate to have Diane Winterling return to WA to examine our candidates. All candidates achieved excellent results. Caleigh Faulkner and Shania Wood achieved their Gold Medal. As both attained an average mark of over 90% for Parts 1 and 2, they have qualified to present for Gold Medal Honours (in front of an audience) later this year. Diane will return to WA in November and is delighted to be the examiner.

Nikki Adams and Sharne Wakefield both achieved their Silver Medal, and Madeleine Bright achieved her Bronze Medal. All trained throughout January, mostly at Midvale under the watchful eyes of Karen Quinn, Natalie Scott, Gemma Kennedy and Hayley Moir. They were also supported by past Gold Medal recipients Tarryn Kluge and Louisa Humphrey.

WA Skills is very blessed to have such wonderful support.

WA again embraced class exams for Tests 1 and 2. 140 candidates sat Test 1 and / or Test 2, giving our younger candidates a very positive experience as they begin their Calisthenic Skills journey.

Copies of the feedback sheets written by Test 1 and 2 examiners have been distributed to coaches who taught Test 1 and Test 2.

Summaries of Test 3 and Grade exam feedback sheets have also been included in this year’s club exam result packages.

Our local examiners for 2019 were Dawn Chester, Karen Quinn, Jacqui Hendriks and Cassandra Smith. All are passionate about Skills and are extremely accommodating and generous with their time.

Several coaches have expressed interest in becoming examiners and hopefully will begin the first stage of that process later this year once they have completed and submitted their initial paperwork.

Page 36: Calisthenics Association of Western Australia Inc Annual ......In 2019, the Board of Management welcomed Rob Farrelly to his role as Treasurer. Rob brings a wealth of experience to

Calisthenics Association of Western Australia Annual General Meeting 2020

Jacqui Hendriks has almost completed her upgrading to be able to examine Grade 1. Cassandra Smith has finished her Grade 1 upgrade. Karen Quinn completed the first two stages of her Grade 3 upgrade and will complete the final stage later this year.

WA only needs a visiting examiner for Medal exams.

Looking at Skills, 2020 I anticipate we will have at least 300 applicants. We will again need the help of an Eastern States examiner for Medal exams which will take place late January 2021. Diane Winterling has already written the date in her diary.

Our main objectives for 2020 are:

• To promote Skills.

• To encourage experienced coaches (especially ‘prep class’ coaches) to begin training as examiners. The examining load on our local examiners only continues to increase.

• To continue to ease the heavy weekend examining load on our local examiners by offering more weekday / evening exam sessions. This will of course be dependent on examiner, supervisor, candidate and venue availability.

To the parents of girls sitting Skills exams, thank you. It is such an important element of our sport. It enables participants to participate safely with knowledge and understanding of correct technique.

A huge thank you to Club Coordinators and coaches, as without their efforts Calisthenic Skills would not be possible.

An enormous thank you to my prep-class coaches who fit so readily into my prep class timetable, and who often rearrange their busy schedules to accommodate last minute changes of days, times and (sometimes) venues.

Thank you to my exam supervisors, who do a wonderful job not only supervising, but putting girls (and parents) at ease.

And finally, a huge thank you to my examiners, who give so much to Calisthenic Skills. They arrange their schedules without question and examine without hesitation, making my role so much easier.

Coaches Association – Christine Polglaze

The Tech Guide app is still a work in progress. Unfortunately, we were misled by our original developer and there are changes that need to be made.

In January the sixth National Calisthenics Conference was held in Adelaide. WA had four attendees and a presenter. All reports so far have been positive.

The restructuring of the ACF will also change the terms of reference for the ACFCC. In the future, coaches will apply for a position on the committee.

Coach Education

In 2019 we welcomed new Course Coordinators. Many thanks to Emily McDonald – Class Assistant and Cadet 2, Miranda Radford – Cadet 1, Courtney Colbran – Cadet 3 and Natalie Scott – Level 2 for organising and running these courses in 2019. Jessica Millson and Kendra Sunits are the Level One coordinators.

Our numbers in 2019 were very positive

Class assistant – 19 Cadets - 72 Coaches – 145

During 2019 three retired coaches completed the bridging modules to regain their accreditation – Janine Hadfield, Jenny Kox and Sarah Stewart. Congratulations to Linda Lund who has completed her Level 2 requirements. WA now has four coaches with Level 2 accreditation with quite a few very close to completion. In perspective, SA has 2 Level 2 coaches amongst 320 coaches and Vic has 13 from some 800 coaches. WA is leading the way.

The Development Weekend was very well attended by coaches. Natalie Bond from Robynmore was our guest presenter. Level Two clubs was presented by Linley Campbell and First Aid was completed also.

Competitions

Coaches were very happy with the new initiative introduced where adjudicators speak openly, honestly and directly to coaches prior to results. They found this feedback extremely helpful and would support it continuing.

Our State Team coaches and assistants were outstanding representatives of the Coaches Association. All teams performed fantastically with the Seniors winning the aggregate. Congratulations are also extended to the coaches of our graceful, solo and duo representatives who were also very successful.

2019 saw the introduction of a development team who travelled to Darwin in September to compete in the Frangipani Challenge. 11 juniors came to trials and became our inaugural Frangipani team. Congratulations to Jacinta Appleton and Christine Polglaze on a very successful trip. Many thanks to CAWA Board of Management on their support of this initiative and to Sandra Gosling and Jodie Appleton who were team personnel.

Gratitude

Absolute gratitude to Karen Quinn. You will leave an amazing legacy and I am grateful to have worked with you over the past 18 years.

State Team – Lisa Farrelly

The 31st ACF National Championships were held in our home state at the Kingsway Christian College Auditorium in July, 2019. CAWA entered teams in the Sub Junior, Junior, Intermediate and Senior team sections fielding a total team of 102 competitors.

CAWA was also represented by state junior, intermediate and senior graceful soloists along with junior and senior calisthenic solos and intermediate duos.

CAWA celebrated three National Championship wins. These were the Senior Team coached by Lisa Savaris and Natalie Dyson, Hannah Whittome in the Intermediate Graceful Solo section, coached by Melissa Hoppenbrouwers and Emersyn Ballard and Isabella Huggins in the Intermediate Duo Section coached by Hayley Moir.

The CAWA State Team were very proud to be a part of the 31st National Calisthenic Championships in Perth. We would like to thank the wonderful local convenors, Lisa Ruecroft and Faye Walmsley and their committee for the fabulous event that they hosted along with the organisation and administration of the ACF.

Costumes

State team costumes are always admired by our eastern states counterparts and 2019 was no different. Our thanks go out to the very talented ladies who design and sew these wonderful costumes. We also thank the clubs that we hired costume sets from. We were able to sell many of our leotards sets to local and interstate clubs and this enabled us to keep the costume fees down for the teams.

The decision was made again not to wear a traditional walk out uniform which was practical and welcomed by the teams and personnel. Personnel continue to wear a formal walkout uniform during competitions and formal occasions.

State Team Concert

The 2019 state team concert was held at the Kingsway Christian College Auditorium. It was decided that albeit the cost was substantially higher, having the ability to perform on the actual national competition stage was to be advantageous to our teams and representatives. The format of the concert changed so that there was only one concert. The concert commenced with the National Representatives and this was followed by the team performances. Adjudicators gave feedback to coaches for all representative and team performances.

Finance

Audited accounts be tabled as part of the CAWA Treasurer’s report. Specific State Team costs are in the attached State Team Treasurer’s report.

State Team Survey

A post Nationals survey was sent to all competitors/parents and personnel. This was an anonymous survey conducted through Survey Monkey. 62 responses were gained from the competitors/parents and 21 responses were gained from the personnel.

The results and comments from the surveys were presented to the Board of Management. Information gained from these surveys may assist with organising future state teams and policies and procedures and to ensure that we look at continuous improvement.

On behalf of the 2019 State Team I would like to thank the calisthenics community for the support shown for the team during the year. We thank the Board of Management at CAWA for their continued support of the state team.

Congratulations to each team member for proudly representing CAWA and for your dedication to the many hours of training that enables you to compete at the highest level.

I personally thank the team of personnel and coaches for your support and never ending commitment to ensuring that our teams are well looked after and that the very large job of the behind the scenes work is carried out seamlessly throughout the year and at the National Championship. I am proud to be a member of this team.

2019 STATE TEAM ACCOUNTS

INCOME/EXPENDITURE – COMMENTS

1. The 2019 State Team had 102 team members and 34 personnel, making it one of the biggest teams ever assembled. Despite this, the turnover of nearly $350 000 was significantly less ($70 000) than in 2018 because the cost of air fares was removed. The initial estimate was still a bit more conservative than desirable, resulting in total refunds to team members of around $55 000, a small reduction from the previous year. For the first time a differential cost estimate was introduced with members of the Senior team paying $150 more up front than girls in the younger age groups. This was primarily a result of the restriction on the number of team members the Seniors could have (capped by ACF at 18), reducing the number of people that some fixed costs could be spread across. With hindsight, the Senior estimate proved to be quite accurate with refunds to that team being quite modest. Refunds in the younger age groups were more significant, demonstrating that the original cost estimate for these girls was a little overinflated.

2. Total expenditure was significantly reduced in 2019 for both Accommodation and Props which is readily explained. The team normally is in accommodation for 7-8 days when interstate but this year most of the team only stayed for 5 nights and in the case of the Sub- Juniors, only 4 nights. The Props expenditure was reduced by virtue of not having to pay freight to transport the props interstate. Income and expenditure in the Miscellaneous area appears to have reduced significantly from 2018 to 2019 but that is not the case. The most significant item in Miscellaneous is GST and the 2018 figures show both income and expenditure but the 2019 figures only show the nett GST expenditure. (State Team has a nett GST liability each year but in the last quarter of the year there is always a GST refund which reduces that liability). In terms of the Estimate vs Actuals, the main area of concern continues to be Costumes with costs varying significantly both between teams but also between individual girls within teams. The “themed” nature of some costumes is an impediment to the sale of such costume sets and the significant cost of individual “character” costumes is also leading to very high costumes costs for individual team members.

3. On the accounting side, once again I sincerely thank Lillian Kluge for her help, advice and patience in supporting me in this role. State Team parents and members are very fortunate to have somebody with Lillian’s ability providing scrutiny and oversight to the State Team accounts.

Rules and Regulations – Karen Quinn

2019 progressed relatively smoothly from a Rules and Regulations perspective. Coaches in the main observed the most commonly broken rules which are timing, stage dressing and minimum number which was pleasing to see. We did have some issues with transfer requests which involved the rule regarding state team representation. These, however were eventually solved. This rule is in place to protect the smaller clubs from losing the experience and expertise that their members gain from selection in State team and will continue to be enforced.

The ACF Age change rules continues to affect our older sections, in particular the seniors now that the age has been raised to 18 years. This change has been a factor in clubs being unable to field a senior team in 2020. The repercussions being that the few senior aged girls that they did have in the club have transferred to another club. As we all know it is difficult to maintain an existing senior team and even more difficult to start one. It is hoped that the clubs affected will have enough seniors to once again form a team compete in 2021. We are currently looking at possible alternative competitive options for clubs affected by small numbers in Inters and Seniors for future years.

The grading of our clubs/age groups each year is an arduous and often stressful process. In most sections there is a definite and significant difference in the experience and standard between A and B grade and therefore it is not as simple as promoting or demoting a team every year.

It is hoped that with the development of our younger coaches and the retention of coaches and competing members in our B Grade clubs the gap between A and B grade will be greatly reduced in the foreseeable future.

I attended an ACF Rules Forum in Melbourne in February this year where every state was represented to discuss proposals for changes to the current ACF National Rules and Regulations.

The suggested changes to the National Rules will be presented to the ACF Council for ratification and will not be effective until 2021.

Reports Tabled

Applecross

Mel Shariat

Applecross has had a wonderful year with most teams growing in numbers. We were very fortunate to have 3 senior teams this year, although we have had to implement a variety of strategies to maximise the well-being of such a large and diverse group. We offered the free term 4 fees for Tinies as recommended by Greer at CAWA and then extended it to Subbie 5’s, with all class being heavily populated from the promotion. We are yet to establish the true effect of this promotion in returning girls for 2020.

Our new facility is running well but it has had a negative impact on the funds available for new costumes. We are currently looking at a variety of ways of trying to increase our budget for costuming. With the opening of our new facility we also took the opportunity to rebrand and now have a new logo, which is more reflective of our Clubs philosophy and visual impact we hope to achieve, but still respecting our Clubs history. With a new logo it meant time for a new uniform, we thank those Clubs who offered advice over choosing a supplier.

Applecross will be bringing in a volunteer levy in 2020 in the hope of extending our volunteer base, as like most Clubs we keep seeing the same people volunteering. We would also like to thank those Clubs who offered advice regarding the successful volunteer levy/programs that they have running at their Clubs.

Athena

Kirsteen McCrory

2019 has been a good year with steady membership and great results. Particularly of note, Louisa’s gold Medal Honours Cali skills achievement. Our new website is now fully functional and we get the majority of our new enquiries through it.

Our recent t holiday workshop was full and it was great to be able to do 40 follow-up emails. Thanks to Greer for the outstanding work she does in this area.

Our committee had to deal with a very difficult parent in Term 4. I would like to acknowledge the professional and responsive support received from CAWA and there ACF- particularly Sandra Gosling and Kerry Fullarton as the ACF Member Protection Officer.

We have 2 newly qualified coaches and some of our older/ more experienced ones moving into support and mentoring roles. We’ve found co-coaching positions to have worked well and have made a conscious decision and financial investment in more of these for 2020. Our AGM is this Friday and we are anticipating the continuation of a large, active and cohesive committee.

Club overnight camp will be held at Midvale March and family Concert in August. Thanks to Andy Plummer for always being so helpful and responsive.

We are hoping to take our Senior team to Ballarat again this October.

Thank Majestic for inviting us to their family concert. Thanks to Applecross for supporting our buddy day.

Thanks to Greer for her ongoing support with the holiday program, she is a great source of development for our sport and particularly our little club.

We welcomed Janine to our coaching staff. We now have 4 coaches and 1 class assistant for less than 20 kids!

Last year we had 9 solo duo items of our 12 members. 100% Cali skills pass rate again, with 9 kids doing Cali skills

Started classes yesterday, 5 of our 12 girls from last year have not returned, primarily stating poor comp results as the reason for this. This is sadly part of growing our club - we hope that having 2 teams this year will help to alleviate this loss.

We are introducing a club leotard this year, thanks to our sponsor, The Calisthenics Shop - look out for us at taste of the stage!

Carine

Sandra Gosling

Carine Calisthenics Club had a very successful 2019! Sub Juniors competing in A Grade – first time in years!

Fundraising highlights were Mother’s Day Cake Stall, Lion King Movie day and our Bunnings Sausage Sizzle. Raising funds for costumes.

Club day camp went well – with all items being finished and costumes tried on. The camp ended with a concert and afternoon tea.

In fourth term we had fourth term free for new Starlet and Sub Junior members - great response.

Hosted a Stretching and Conditioning Workshop in February. We had about 30-40 participants in attendance – some of these were new.

Hills

Sandra O’Keefe

Had great class numbers in 2019, already looking to pass this number this year.

After having numerous problems with our previous website we have implemented a new website which is now fully functional and much more user friendly.

Hills had great representation at State Team level, with 13 participants and 11 personnel including coaching staff. 18 participants performed in the Opening Ceremony and 2 of the 3 coaches were from Hills.

This year Hills have 12 representatives across the three teams as well as two coaches and 5 personnel members.

2020 Hills Graceful Competition - Entries closed at 276, the highest number of entries ever received for this competition. The competition will be run from Friday, 3 – Sunday, 5 April. The programme will be exceedingly tight. However, we are hoping that it will run to time.

Imperial

Teresa Santoro

We had a successful year in 2019 and it all ran smoothly with a great committee in place and really good-sized teams.

Our fundraising comprised of two sausage sizzles at Bunnings and funds raised from our Family Concert by offering dinner, cake stall and raffles, as well as ticket sales.

We continue to train at the one venue on the one evening, and this has proven to be beneficial from an administrative point of view as well as with parents of multiple children in the sport. It is also good from a coaching perspective, with our Head Coach able to keep a close eye on all groups on the one evening.

One thing that did concern us leading into the new year is the rate of pay offered to our Coaches and Cadets. The CAWA have offered some advice on the various awards that may be appropriate for us, however I do believe that there should be a clearer support structure for our sport about fair work requirements. Our club, as with all others have volunteer members running the organisations and it is important that the correct procedures are followed and consistent among clubs in WA with clear guidelines in place. I would propose that this be considered and taken up with Australian Calisthenic Federation to ensure the sport covering the right protocols for their members.

Narrogin

Heather Lange

2019 was a good year even though we were only able to have one team of Juniors.

A highlight for us was Layla Hart being our first Narrogin participant to make a CAWA State Team.

We hope to have a Sub Junior and Junior teams this year, but it is looking doubtful as numbers are very low. We will have a better idea when school returns.

No matter what ‘numbers’ we have, we always have beautiful girls and families participate.

Phoenix

Lauren Adamos

2019 was a great year for us with 50 members across the different age groups from Tinies to Intermediates. We hope to retain these members as well as add new members in 2020

We are pleased to have representation in the 2020 CAWA State Team in the Sub Junior, Junior and Intermediate sections with 4 club members and 1 coach this year.

City of Wanneroo has contacted to discuss the possibility of adding a permanent wood flooring in the Pavilion. We are unsure if these plans are definite, but we are certainly excited that they are being considered.

At the moment, we lay a temporary floor down at the beginning of each year and them remove it in November.

We also took the opportunity to offer a free term in term 4 for any one that was interested in Calisthenics. This really helped as we had new girls turn up to try in most of the sections.

It is looking like we may have 2 teams each in Sub Juniors, Juniors and Inters with our numbers increasing once again. But Unfortunately will not have a Senior team for 2020 but with hopes for one in 2021.

The Club is looking forward to having another great year.

Terrific turnout for our holiday workshop - very positive response from attendees on the day. Thanks to CAWA and Greer.

We had our registration and equipment day yesterday, with numbers increasing as everyone registers into their classes.

Our new constitution is up and running quite smoothly. All positions on our executive have been filled and we have a healthy number of general committee members. We are still working on a couple more for CAWA theatre management and comps committee as a few long standing volunteers have retired.

Rockingham

2019 was a year of great growth and celebration. We celebrated our 10th Anniversary with our families at our parent concert.

We are also excited to note that we were able to reopen our junior team, in fact in 2020 we will have two teams of Juniors. This brings our club to five competitive teams, one Inters, two Juniors and two Sub Juniors as well as our non-competing Development and Cuties teams.

We had our biggest year of solo/duo and graceful participants. We have moved to a new venue that can accommodate all our teams on their various days which has been fantastic.

We have had a few little bumps along the way this year but have overcome these thanks to the support and encouragement from CAWA, Greer in Development and the Coaches Association.

We will be introducing a new club uniform later this year.

One of our biggest problems is a lack of coaches who are willing to travel to Rockingham and this is restricting our club’s future growth. It is certainly something we will need to address with CAWA for next year. All our current coaches travel from Perth or Mandurah at their own expense and we don’t want to burn them out by over loading them with several teams.

Held a recruitment display at a shopping centre in January of this year, offering a promotion for 2020 Tinies. New recruit free fees, and returning Tinies from last year, half price. We also ran our own Come and Try day a few days after the display for those interested.

We said farewell to one of our coaches, Keira Skeet at the end of third term. Keira has relocated interstate. We also lost our Vice Presidents at the end of 2019, mid-term of the 2-year role. This role had been undertaken jointly by Brooke Sumastra and Erin Linn.

Pleased to have a couple of girls going to Darwin in July to compete with the State Team. Also, we’re very pleased and humbled to have 2 of Stellar coaches involved in the State Team coaching staff in 2020.

2020 is Stellar Calisthenics 10th anniversary so we have a lot of planning ahead of us to celebrate this year.

Our Registration day is on Saturday 1st February, followed by our AGM in the afternoon.

General Business

Club Constitutions Sandra asked clubs to contact BoM is they are having any issues getting their Constitution completed. Told them not to panic as they are still covered under the new Modern Rules.

All Clubs are to email their completed Constitution to Debbie (Secretary) as soon as they have been accepted.

Communication Sandra outlined the new streamlined Communication procedure. The Deputy and Deputy Vice Presidents have been allocated clubs to be the first line of contact for any business that needs attention by the Board.

Level 1 Coach - Team Requirement

Wendy F – Asked for clarification on the team requirements of a Level One coach. Wanted to confirm how many items must be performed at State Champs. – Referred to Karen Q for clarification.

Travel Allowance Wendy F – Asked if there might be any grants available for travel allowances to entice coaches to coach at non metro clubs not the role of coaches . – Referred to Trish/Greer to investigate grant options.

Coaches’ Wages Teresa S – Requested information from other clubs as to payment of Coach’s wages and pay scales. This information is not usually shared by clubs as it considered confidential between club and coach.

Rob F (with input from clubs) to create guidelines on payment of coaches at correct rate.

Inter/Senior Teams Chris P – Put forward the idea for clubs to have the ability to create a combined inter/senior team. This would alleviate having to call on girls from other clubs to create a Senior team in one club. It would encourage Seniors to stay at their club until numbers allowed a team to be formed.

Senior Development Team

Chris P – Put forward the idea of forming a senior team of girls that would not consider State Team trials. Would encourage development at the Senior level. Team could enter a regional Victorian competition.

Graceful Entries Closing date for entries is 27 February. Gail encouraged clubs to remind Coaches of the closing date.

Grading has been scheduled for the middle weekend of school holiday – was unavoidable.

Girls can apply to be graded on their Hills performance. This will only be allowed for girls who are overseas or injured – proof must be given.

Club Team Numbers Gail has asked all clubs to email her the number of teams to be entered into comps this year.

Club Contacts A reminder to all clubs to email their completed Club Contact forms as soon as their AGM has been held.

B Grade Competitions Heather has asked that consideration be given to hold the B Grade Sub Junior and Junior competitions on the same weekend. This would allow their families to travel to Midvale once.

Gail replied to that request saying that it is time to consider the metro clubs and the effect that it has on their teams and the 2020 competition dates had already been announced at the end of 2019.

CAWA Medals We now have CAWA medals that will be presented at competitions. They look great!

School Holiday Program

Lauren (Phoenix) asked that consideration be given to smaller classes as they had children leave early as they were overwhelmed.

Date of Birth on Excel report would be helpful for club’s when doing their follow up with participants.

Sandra wished everyone a very successful 2020 and thanked everyone for attending today’s meeting.
