SYMPHONIC KALEIDOSCOPE

October 19, 2019 8:00 PMTemple Theatre

The concert opens with Mozart’s brilliant and bustling overture to his comic opera The Marriage of Figaro, followed by a

modern masterpiece by Austrian pianist and composer Friedrich Gulda, who worked in both classical and jazz styles. His

cello concerto, performed by SBSO’s principal cellist, Igor Cetkovic, blurs the boundaries between musical genres

combining a rhythm section of guitar, bass, and drum set in a work which is described as, “jazz, a minuet, rock, a

smidgen of polka, a march, and a cadenza with two spots where the star cellist must improvise.” The program concludes

with Beethoven’s exuberant seventh symphony, a popular work described by Wagner as the apotheosis of the dance.”

Special Guest Artist: Igor Cetkovic

A native of Belgrade, Serbia, cellist Igor Cetkovic enjoys a career as a soloist, chambermusician, orchestra member and educator. Igor has served with orchestras acrossEurope and the United States, including the Bergen Philharmonic, Stavanger SymphonyOrchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a solo cellist of the Serbianchamber orchestra, “The St. George Strings.” A winner of many national and regionalcompetitions and performance awards, Igor finished his doctoral studies at MichiganState University, studying under the renowned Suren Bagratuni. He also holds degreesfrom Stavanger University, University of Belgrade, and Central Michigan University. Igor’s other principal teachers include his father Relja Cetkovic, Sandra Belic, Liv Opdaland Jamie Fiste. Currently, Mr. Cetkovic is an artist-in-residence and principal cellist ofthe Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, principal cello of the Saginaw Bay Symphony, assistant principal cello of the West Michigan Symphony and as the cellist for Burdick-Thorne String Quartet. The genius pianist Friedrich Gulda (1930-2000) was lauded for his extraordinaryinterpretations of the music of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven. A littleknown fact is that Gulda sent a fax from Zurich airport announcing his own deathin order to see what kind of obituaries would be written about him. “People havethrown so much muck at me while I am alive, I do not want them to chuck it intomy grave as well,” Gulda said. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro opera is based on the 1784 French play, Lafolle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais. The play wasvery controversial in its day (and even banned briefly in France),

Take A StandMember

Michael and Kathleen Brush

The Take A Stand initiative was introducedduring my term as a Board of Directorsmember for the SBSO. We immediatelyrecognized it as a significant, yet easilyaffordable, way to support our orchestra. The SBSO is one of the last bastions ofmusical culture in our area. In my experienceworking with it, I witnessed the dedication andcreativity of Musical Directors, staff, board, and volunteers whose diligence promotes itsvitality, donors whose vision insures itslongevity, and experienced interaction withthe highly skilled musicians who bring themusic to life. The SBSO is an essential component of life inthis area and our commitment to Take AStand is an easy way to contribute. Michael & Kathleen Brush
