    Road-test: Isuzus satisfyingnewKB

    Isuzu recently coined a new catch phrase

    namely, The Bakkie Specialists which I

    quite like and tend to agree with.

    Since 1972, Isuzuhas stuck to theirwinning

    recipe by producing safe, solid and reliable

    bakkieswhich thousands of SouthAfricans

    fell in love with. It has taken the company

    more than 40 years to win over the hearts

    of their loyal fans. With the launch of the

    sixth generation KB, Isuzu provides more

    of the same quality that weve come to ex-

    pect.

    Farmers, buildersandworkers fromvari-

    ous different sectors waited for close to 10

    years for this bakkie, and it has finally ar-

    rived.

    I took delivery of a white KB 300 D-Teq

    and spent a couple of days testing it around

    theWesternCape. Lets start offwith the col-

    our,white is inmyhumble opinion the only

    colour a bakkie should be. An obvious rea-

    son for this is that it stays cleaner for longer

    but to be honest, nothing looks more man-

    ly thanburnt orangemud stains onawhite

    bakkie.

    On the interior, Isuzu changed the dash-

    board and instrument cluster. Borrowing

    some of its new design features from the

    Chevrolet Trailblazer. This is by no means

    a bad thing, and I do like the large climate

    control display and the dark chocolate

    brown leather seats. I would however have

    wanted my front passenger seat to be more

    adjustableorelectroniceven.Tallerpassen-

    gers complained that headroom in the front

    was a bit cramped, but on the upside leg-

    room in the rear has improved tremendous-

    ly. Improvements made possible by build-

    ing a larger cabin and bakkie overall. The

    rear seat positioning is certainly not up-

    right any more and improves comfort lev-

    els, especially on long distance trips. Cruise

    control works aplomb with switches situated

    on the steering wheel.

    In the looks department I think Isuzu has

    got the styling spot on. They went for a fresh

    but not out of this world design, while stay-

    ing true to Isuzus signature design details.

    Inthefront,xenonlook-alikelightclustersare

    surrounded by some very shiny chrome ac-

    cents. The newKB does not feature the signa-

    ture intercooler hood-scoop which the diesel

    models had. The bakkie is fitted with a

    chromed-out rear bumper were the park-as-

    sist can be found. This is anotherwelcome ad-

    dition to modern bakkies.

    The previous KB 300 D-Teq was fitted with

    a 3.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel mill

    which produced 120 kW/360Nm. The newKB

    uses the sameenginewithupgraded internals

    and electronics which raises the power to a

    130 kW/380 Nm. The extra bit of power is wel-

    comed but owners of the previous model

    should not expect to be blown away.

    Two things I was however impressed by

    was the almost silent idle. This was at first

    quite strange due to the fact that Isuzu has

    always had a very distinct engine noise.

    But the new sound is welcomed along

    with a improved ride on all surfaces.

    When I heard that Isuzu stuck with a 5-

    speed gearbox I reserved my scepticism.

    Only after a good few kilometres in and

    around town, I can honestly say that its

    not bad at all. Only having five cogs to slap

    around meant that third, fourth and fifth

    were geared longer to help lower fuel con-

    sumption and improve overtaking. This

    same5-speedallowedfor lessdownshifting

    while sipping little amounts of diesel. So

    little in fact that the KB has class-leading

    fuel economy. I achieved figures of about

    8,5 litres/100km on the open road while in

    town it went up to around 10 litres/100km.

    With an 80 liter fuel tank you can easily

    get past the 800 km range.

    Being a double cab bakkie, rivals are a

    certainty, with the likes of Hilux, Ranger

    andAmarok all competing for the top spot.

    as standard.

    Many years ago there was a hatchback

    ToyotacalledTazz, apurelySouthAfrican

    invention for the five-door Corolla shape.

    This cheapie offspring could only watch

    VWsGolf and other premiumhatchbacks

    drive off into the sunset.

    TazzandCitiGolfbattled itout forentry-lev-

    el sales while Toyota South Africa had no an-

    swer to Golf, Astra, etc. That was until the

    RunX came along, another local-is-lekker

    name for what wouldve passed as a perfectly

    good Corolla hatchback elsewhere.

    The RunX had a sense of honest simplicity

    about it, something most Toyota owners ap-

    preciate. Itwas far frombeautiful yet pleasing

    to the eye, especiallywith some biggerwheels

    to fill those great Toyota wheel arches.

    Its successor was the world-market Auris,

    anotherToyota thatwasnt bad looking or bad

    todrive. Italsogaveusatasteof things tocome

    with more curves, better proportions and a

    rather exciting dashboard and instrument

    cluster.

    This year saw the introduction of the sec-

    ond-generation Auris which showcases Toyo-

    tas newdesign languagewith daring lines de-

    fining a slightlymore aggressive shape. Some

    observersnotedKorean influencewhich, con-

    sidering what theyre up to nowadays, is a

    back-handed compliment.

    Its interior is also a refreshing change from

    previous attempts with a whiff of retro and

    86. The dash rises almost vertically andmeets

    thecentral tunnel through1970sMercedesair

    ventsandasilverswoopwhich(bigsigh)hous-

    es the obligatory 1982 Toyota clock.

    This top-spec XRs climate control also re-

    lies on old-school LCD displays but its efforts

    are flawless. A big touch-screen infotainment

    system takes centre stage and offers features

    like radio, CD, mp3, Aux, USB, Bluetooth and

    Instrumentation is clearly drawn with a

    good trip computer and chrome-ringed main

    instruments behind a fat, adjustable, multi-

    function steering wheel. The wheels bottom

    sectionhasabig silveraccent, asdoes thegear

    lever surround, both front door handles and

    two round air vents.

    Leather covers most other surfaces and is

    held togetheracross thebellyof thedashboard

    by beautifully contrasting white stitches.

    These are reflected in the door pockets and

    whereas Toyota still has their own idea of

    what leather should lookand feel like, thenew

    Auris front seats got heaps of praise.

    Therearseats fold ina60/40split to increase

    luggage capacity and you get the usual sus-

    pects like central locking, alloywheels, power

    windows and mirrors, multiple airbags, ad-

    vanced ABS brakes, vehicle stability control,

    ISOFIX anchors, cup holders, alarm and im-

    mobiliser as standard.

    Powering the Auris XR is a 1,598cc 4-cylin-

    der petrol engine (97kW/132hp/160Nm)

    through either a six-speedmanual gearbox or

    CVT (continually variable transmission).

    Most people gasp, freeze or recoil in horror

    at thementionof those three lettersbut thank-

    fully we have a CVT owner on our team.

    Said owner confirmed that this Toyota has

    a pleasing combination of bubbly engine and

    excellent response. There isnt much throttle

    take-up delay and youll only have to endure

    the hair-raising constant scream if you need

    full power.

    Cruising around town or on the highway is

    extremely smooth, quite frugal (claimed

    6.1L/100km, 143g CO/km) and very relaxing

    because the 160Nm of torque really do more

    than they promise. This box also offersmanu-

    al gear simulation for situations when you

    simply need to keep the revs up.

    Comparative 1,600 automatic hatchbacks

    in specification levels.
