“Aretheregoodquality locksonthewindowsand doors, and do they work properly? Do theground floor windows have burglar bars? Arethe driveway and pedestrian gates electronicand in good working condition? These are goodquestions to ask before moving day,” says RobDale, managing director of ADT Security in theWestern Cape.
Once the sale is concluded, it is very impor-tant that the new home owner is aware of all
the strangers who will be in and out of theirold and new properties on moving day:
) If you are using a moving company, findout at what time, and how many of their staffyou can expect at your home on the day. Theyshould be dressed in uniform and be able toidentify themselves at your request.
) It is always a good idea to have someoneyou trust around to keep a watchful eye duringthe move. If you can’t be around, arrange witha family member or friend to be there when themovers arrive to pack up your belongings andanother person to be at your new home to over-see the offloading of goods.
) Always keep rare and valuable items suchas jewellery, cameras and important docu-
ments out of sight. Transport these privately orleave them in the care of a trusted family mem-ber or friend until the move is completed.
) Make sure that every box is properlypacked and sealed to ensure the safe transit ofall your possessions, including fragile items.Each item must be clearly numbered so thatnothing goes astray between properties.
Dale adds that ensuring the security of thenew house should not have to wait until every-one is settled in. He has the following sugges-tions to be followed before moving day:
. Change all door and gate locks if there isanyuncertaintyaboutthewhereaboutsofsparekeys.
. Evaluate the condition of existing security
gatesandburglarbarsand,ifnecessary,replacethem as soon as possible.
. Consider an intercom with a monitor, ora peep-hole in the front door, so that visitorscanbeidentifiedbeforetheyareallowedaccess.
. Make sure that all the outside lights areworking properly.
. Introduce the members of the household tothe neighbours.
. Find out where the nearest police stationis and whether the area has a neighbourhoodwatch.

Entries for the2015editionofSouthAfri-ca’s pre-eminent gentlemen’s racingevent, the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb, arenowopen – and bound to sell out quickly.
In mid-May, the quiet road leading up tothe Simola Golf and Country Estate in Knys-na, Western Cape, will transform into a mo-torsport spectacle. The sound of four, six,eight cylinders and more will echo acrossthe hills, while more than 10 000 spectators
line the course to witness a variety of high-speed machines strut their stuff.
The fun kicks off on 14 May, which seesthe inaugural running of Supercar Thurs-day – an event where up to 50 supercar own-ers can take their high-performance ma-chinery for a blast up the Simola Hill road.While this is a non-competitive event, withno prizes, it will still be timed.
Classic Car Friday returns on 15 May,with 50 competitors battling it out in theirhistoric machines for top honours. Specta-tors will be able to see a wide variety of fa-
mous classics in action on the Friday, in-cluding iconic Jaguar models such as theMK II and E-Type, competing in categoriesranging from pre-war vehicles, all the wayto 60s, 70s, and 80s-era racing cars.
Of course, the highlight of the Jaguar Si-mola Hillclimb is the King of the Hill compe-tition, which runs on 16 and 17 May. In thisno-holds-barred timed event all manner ofmachines will have a chance to go for gloryin their respective classes. Production cars,from the ordinary to 400-plus kilowatt sportscars like the Jaguar F-TYPE Coupé R, andpurpose-built racing cars boasting outputsof more than 700 kW will thrill spectatorsas they scream up the hill for the coveted
King of the Hill title.The weekend will also see the running of
the successful Jaguar Media Challenge, nowin its second year. Five journalists will viefor the honour of being crowned South Afri-ca’s fastest motoring scribe and having theirname immortalised on the Alucat Cup. Lastyear’s winner, Stuart Grant, will return todefend his title from four challengers – withall five media driving suitably racy JaguarXF R-Sports.

No sooner had our test car parked on mydriveway and I got the first enquiry. “Whatis it?” went on loop even after I repeated “AnInfiniti!” a few times. “No, no. What brandis it?” Sigh. “A fancy Nissan” finally quelledtheincessantqueries,quotingToyota’sLexusand the immense American popularity ofthese makes.
The Q50 is roughly the size of an Audi A4but it looks nothing like a German saloon;more like a modern Hyundai on acid. Mostbody panels have multiple folds to form a dy-namic, flowing shape with sharp features inits face, heavily styled light clusters and avery unique chrome kink in its C (rear) roofpillar.
Perhaps our car’s metallic red paint andivory leather interior added to its stun factorbecause I purposefully parked it outside a de-partment store and observed more than halfof all passers-by doing a double take. Quitea few stopped, most stared at its logos and afew left greasy finger marks on the side win-dows. Available in your choice of three en-gines, two gearboxes and four trim lines, thecar you see here is a Q50 Premium 2.0 turbo-petrol Automatic. Thanks to a partnershipwith Mercedes-Benz, the 1 991cc engine(155 kW, 350 Nm) and seven-speed automaticgearbox are sourced from Stuttgart. Infiniticlaims0-100 km/hin7.2seconds(ourbestwas7.34), 245 km/h top speed and 7F/100 km aver-ageconsumptionfromthe74F tank.Althoughour overall average was closer to 10F/100 km,I was pleasantly surprised by the Q50’s big75F fuel tank and enormous boot – 500 litres.
