ONE OF THE NATION’S BESTThe Huskies have been one of the most successful programs in not only the PSAC and the region but the nation over the past decade-plus. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, only three Division II teams have more victories than Bloomsburg’s 132.
NUMBERS TO KNOW}0 - The Huskies young offensive line, with three new starters this year, has not allowed a sack yet this season through two games
}3 - Turnovers caused through two games by junior defensive back Damin Finley (two forced fumbles, one interception)
}7 - Bloomsburg has won seven straight road games
}9 - Number of turnovers generated by the Huskies defense through the first two weeks

ABOUT MERCYHURST• The Lakers finished 7-4 last year and went 4-3 in the PSAC West, playing their best at home with a 3-1 record at Tullio Field• Six starters on offense and seven on defense returned from last year’s team• Running back Brandon Brown-Dukes has struggled thus far (97 yards on 30 carries, 3.2 ypc), but has found success in his Lakers career, becoming the first running back in program history to have back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons (1,008 yards in 2013 and 7.0 ypc; 1,295 yards a 5.3 ypc in 2012)• Mercyhurst is seeking to post its third con-secutive winning seasons, which would be the first time the Lakers had recorded three straight winning campaigns since doing so from 1983-1989• Redshirt senior offensive lineman Ben Gysin and senior free safety Colin Kimball (six inter-ceptions in 2013) were pre-season All-Ameri-can picks• Mercyhurst is 13-7 against PSAC East foes in six seasons since joining the conference, but had a six-game winning streak vs. the East snapped last week vs. West Chester• The Lakers are still looking for an answer at quarterback – redshirt sophomore Zach Emer-ick (22-40-192 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) made his first career start in Week 1, but was lifted for redshirt junior Brendan Boylan (9-20-126 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT) in the second half last week
BLOOMSBURG HEAD COACH PAUL DARRAGH• Named 2013 PSAC East Coach of the Year• Compiled best record of any first-year head coach in Bloomsburg program history in 2013 (10-2)• Entering 18th year on Huskies coaching staff• The Huskies have a .767 winning percent-age since Darragh joined the coaching staff in 1997• For a complete bio, see page 13
MERCYHURST HEAD COACH MARTY SCHAETZLE• Thirteenth season at the helm of the Lakers• Mercyhurst is 41-29 and 26-16 in the PSAC West since joining the conference for the 2008 season• Led Mercyhurst to win six of final seven games last year after slow start, finishing 7-4• First coach to lead Mercyhurst to back-to-back winning seasons (2012, 2013) since Jim Chapman in 1991 and 1992• Two-time PSAC West Coach of the Year• Came to Mercyhurst from Bucknell where he was an assistant for five seasons, working as tight ends coach and offensive coordinator

@GOBUHUSKIES • #UNLEASHED BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
WEEK 3 • AT MERCYHURST#UNLEASHED
PRESEASON RANKINGSThe Huskies were nationally-ranked in a number of preseason polls. Bloomsburg ranks No. 24 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 and No. 25 in the D2Football.com poll. The Huskies also stand No. 17 in The Sporting News preseason Top 25 and were slotted No. 23 by Lindy’s Sports.
RANKED AGAINNational recognition among the Division II pollsters is nothing new for the Huskies. With their Top 25 rankings this preseason, Bloomsburg has now been ranked in at least one national Top 25 poll since the 2000 season.
The Huskies have been ranked in every AFCA Top 25 since October 11, 2010 – a span of 47 consecutive polls.
LUCKY SEVENWeek 1’s win at Stonehill marked the seventh time in head coach Paul Darragh’s head coaching tenure that the Huskies have allowed 14 points or less.
MOVIN’ ON UPBloomsburg jumped forward in both national NCAA Division II polls this week, advancing six spots to No. 15 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 while moving six spots as well in the D2Football.com poll to No. 13.
ROOKIES DEBUT UP FRONTThe Huskies had a different look than in previous years when they debuted Week 1 at Stonehill as three players made their first collegiate starts on the offensive line. Christian Whiteside (LG), Nick Reed (RG) and John Garland (RT) all started for the first time, helping pave the way for the Huskies to finish with 211 yards rushing and the line also did not allow a sack.
FINLEY MAKES MOST OF OPPORTUNITYDamin Finley made the most of his first career start in Week 1 at Stonehill. Starting in place of senior D.J. Robinson at cornerback, Finley caused two turnovers – first he delivered a forced fumble and fumble recovery on the first play from scrimmage by the Skyhawks. Later in the first quarter, he made a nifty tip and interception on a deep ball attempt from Stonehill. He finished the game with a career-high seven tackles.
WINNING VS. THE WESTBloomsburg has been dominant in PSAC crossover contests over the past 15 years. Since 1999, the Huskies are 44-14 vs. PSAC West teams and are 24-5 against Western foes at Redman Stadium.
THE MORE THINGS CHANGE...While the Huskies have three new faces on the offensive line this year - John Garland, Nick Reed and Christian Whiteside - taking over for the impeccable graduated trio of Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck one thing has remained the same: the ability to protect the quarterback. Through the first two games, the Huskies have not allowed a sack. Bloomsburg surrendered only 12 sacks in 2013.
SHIRK TO MISS MERCYHURST GAMESenior middle linebacker and Huskies leading tackler Justin Shirk will miss Saturday’s game due to PSAC and NCAA rules regarding targeting hits. After being deemed to have hit a California player helmet-to-helmet, Shirk was forced to leave last week’s game in the fourth quarter and will have to sit out on Saturday after Bloomsburg’s appeal of the penalty was denied by the NCAA. Shirk ranks seventh in the PSAC in tackles with 21, adding three sacks. Saturday will snap a streak of 20 consecutive starts made by Shirk, second-best on the team behind David McFadden’s 26 straight starts.
WELCOME BACK EDDIERunning back Eddie Mateo made his return Week 1 at Stonehill after returning to school for his senior season after sitting out last year due to personal reasons. Mateo shook off the rust by rushing for 105 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns. Listed third on the Huskies depth chart, Mateo was the “hot hand” at Stonehill, earning the most carries out of the Bloomsburg running back stable.
He followed that up in Week 2 with 106 yards on 24 carries.
THIS TIME THEY COUNTUnder new rules adopted by the PSAC for this season in all sports, all mandated conference matchups will count toward divisional standings. As such, the Huskies PSAC crossover contests against Western Division members California (PA) and Mercyhurst will go toward BU’s PSAC East standings. The lone exception will be the final week of the season - the PSAC slate ends the season with a week of crossovers including the PSAC Championship Game, but those games will not count toward the divisional standings as the title game will be set following the penultimate week of the season.
HUSKIES TAKE PSAC EAST DEFENSIVE HONORS }The Bloomsburg defense has been stellar through the first two weeks of the season with the Hus-kies earning PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week honors back-to-back.
Senior defensive tackle Shawn Mitchell earned the accolades this week after playing a key role in two crucial turnovers forced by the Huskies defense. Mitchell picked up an interception on the first play of overtime which set up BU for the game-winning field goal. He also recorded a fumble recovery which set up a Huskies third quarter scoring drive.
In Week 1, senior linebacker Justin Shirk finished with nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a sack. Five of his tackles were solo stops.
He had a hand in two crucial turnovers as the Huskies were able to rally in the second half and pull away for a 24-7 non-conference victory.
BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES @GOBUHUSKIES • #UNLEASHED
#UNLEASHED WEEK 3 • AT MERCYHURST
ROSTER NOTES> The Huskies have 14 seniors> BU’s defensive backs had the most career starts as a positional unit entering the season - 52. The linebackers entered the year with 51 combined starts> The offense has five returning starters from 2013 while the defense has eight> 71 players on the active roster are from the state of Pennsylvania
‘MONEY’ PLAYSThe Huskies had 14 “money plays” at Stonehill in Week 1 - plays that resulted in a first down or a touchdown. Eddie Mateo led the way with eight “money” plays while Dai’Shon Munger had three. Chad Hoffman had the team’s lone fourth down “money” reception while Will Wagner had potentially the biggest “money” play - an eight-yard rush on 4th-and-3 out of a punt formation.
IN ELITE COMPANYThe run of success for the Huskies over the past 15 years is nearly unparalleled in college football. Bloomsburg has won seven or more games in 15 consecutive seasons – a streak that is impressive at any level. Only four schools in the divisions of NCAA (FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III) have a longer streak of seven or more victories – Florida State and Virginia Tech in the FBS; Northwest Missouri in Division II and Mount Union in Division III. The 15-year streak is also a PSAC record, surpassing the previous mark of 13 straight years set by IUP from 1984-1996.
ROAD SUCCESSThe Huskies have not been afraid of travel in recent years, posting a 24-7 record away from home since 2009 (.774). Bloomsburg won all five of its road games last season and have won seven consecutive regular season road games dating to 2012.
GROUND AND POUNDThe Huskies have had at least 30 rushing attempts in 50 straight games, dating back to Oct. 31, 2009 - a record that nearly was broken in Week 9 of 2013 when Bloomsburg ran exactly 30 times vs. Shippensburg.
RUNNING TO DAYLIGHTEntering this week’s game, Bloomsburg has an on-going streak of 34 straight games with at least one rushing touchdown – the last time the Huskies failed to run for a score came on Sept. 15, 2011 at IUP.
PUTTING UP THE POINTSThe Huskies are 107-3 when scoring 40 points all-time. Bloomsburg tied the school record of seven games with 40+points in 2013 (2005, 2007, 2012, 2013).
RUN THE BALL, STOP THE RUNThe Huskies were nearly as adept at stopping the run in 2013 as they were rushing themselves. Bloomsburg ranked ninth in the nation in rush yardage allowed (89.9) and allowed only one player to rush for 100 yards or more a year ago, West Chester’s Rondell White in the NCAA Playoffs (113).

RECORD-SETTING 2013The 2013 season was one for the record books in terms of offense for the Huskies. Bloomsburg finished the year with the most points scored in school history (474) and the most-ever yards of total offense (5,895). The Huskies also compiled 11 30-point games and recorded 500 or more yards of total offense eight times in 2013, both school records. The Huskies also ran for 350+ yards in a game six times last year, breaking the old record of four set in 2004.
BUCKING THE TRENDWhile much of football has shifted to a pass-happy offensive attack, the Huskies are finding more success than ever with their tried and true rushing game. Bloomsburg has posted the top two rushing seasons in PSAC history back-to-back – 2012 (3,789 yards) and 2013 (3,762 yards). Bloomsburg averaged 313.5 yards per game on the ground last fall.
CAPTAIN SHIRKRedshirt senior Justin Shirk is in his second season as a captain for the Huskies and is the unquestioned leader of the defense. After shifting to middle linebacker for last year, he responded with the third-most tackles in BU single season history (123). A former two-sport star in maroon and gold, Shirk won the 2012 NCAA Division II national javelin championship to become the first national champion in men’s track and field in school history.

HUSKIES IN THE NFLBloomsburg currently has three players on NFL rosters as of Week 3.
Jahri Evans (‘06) continues to be a stalwart at right tackle for the New Orleans Saints, again serving as a starter in front of quarterback Drew Brees. Evans, a fourth round pick of the Saints in 2006, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and considered one of the NFL’s best at his position. In 2011 he was named as one of the 100 Greatest Players in the NFL and won a Super Bowl ring with the Saints in 2009.
Defensive end Larry Webster became the second-highest NFL Draft pick in school history this past May when he was selected in the fourth round (136th overall) by the Detroit Lions. He had 13.5 sacks in 2012 and 12.5 in 2013 for the Huskies. Webster made the Lions’ 53-man roster but has been inactive the first two weeks.
Matt Feiler, who like Webster was an All-American for the Huskies in 2013, was signed as a free agent following the draft by the Houston Texans. Feiler, an offensive tackle, is currently a member of the Texans’ practice squad.

ELLIOTT CONTINUES TO SHINE IN RETURN ROLESophomore Lawrence Elliott Jr. impressed as a freshman return man last year, earning second team All-PSAC East honors, also writing his name in the Huskies record books for highest kick return average in a single game (36.6) vs. Shippensburg, and averaging 27.8 yards per kick return for the season. He’s continued his success in returns this year, posting 97 total yards of returns last week vs. California (PA). For the season, he ranks third on the team in all purpose yardage with 164.
NOTHING LIKE THE FIRST TIMEFullbacks rarely get a spot in the limelight, often serving as unsung heroes, especially in the Huskies run-oriented offensive attack. Fifth-year senior fullback Brody Myers got his chance to shine in Week 1 at Stonehill, rumbling for a five-yard touchdown. The touchdown run was the first of Myers’ career, not only at BU but was also his first-ever scoring run including his high school career. Myers has stepped into the starting role for the Huskies this season.
BIG SHOES TO FILLLast year’s senior class was perhaps the most decorated in school history, taking the second-most victories over any four-year period in school history (39) while capturing numerous All-Conference, All-Region and All-American awards. Last year alone, the quartet of running back Franklyn Quiteh, defensive end Larry Webster and offensive linemen Brian Clarke and Matt Feiler claimed 16 All-American awards among them. Quiteh was named the Harlon Hill Award Winner as the nation’s top player while Brian Clarke was a finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award as the nation’s top lineman; Webster a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award as the top small school defensive player and place-kicker Danny Fisher also a finalist for the national place-kicker of the year award. Quiteh and Fisher own several all-time PSAC career records including rushing yards as well as field goals respectively.
Leading wide receiver Glenn Hutton Jr. and starting fullback Matt Wenrich and standout defensive back Jonathan Patrick and defensive lineman Chris Kennedy also graduated.
KELLY CLIMBING RECORD BOOKSJunior quarterback Tim Kelly continued to climb up the school record books vs. California, moving into eighth place all-time in BU passing with 3,693 career yards, passing Pat Carey’s 3,647. Next up is Jay DeDea, who tossed for 4,705 yards from 1983-86. Kelly also is seventh all-time in BU touchdown passes (36), one away from a tie for fifth.
HUSKIES WORK OVERTIMEBloomsburg needed overtime to defeat California, 24-21, in Week 2. Needing an extra period has been a rarity for the Huskies in recent years - the Cal win was the first overtime game for Bloomsburg since a 10-7 loss in OT vs. Gannon at home in 2009. Bloomsburg’s last overtime win at home before Week 2 was a 35-28 victory at home over Kutztown in 2003. BU also played an OT game at East Stroudsburg in 2005, a 31-24 win for the Huskies.
WORKING WELL FROM BEHINDThe Huskies have spotted their competition points in each of the first two games. In Week 1, Stonehill used a 48-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead in the second quarter and led 7-3 at half before the Huskies rallied late in the third. Bloomsburg again trailed near halftime in Week 2, falling behind 3-0 before scoring on a fumbled punt attempt by Cal with 45 seconds remaining in the first half.
HITTING THE CENTURY MARKBloomsburg’s run defense has been strong against opponents in recent seasons. Just one player rushed for over 100 yards against the Huskies in 2013 - Ronell White of West Chester in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. White also ran for 100+ yards against the Huskies in 2012. The last player other than White to rush for over 100 yards against Bloomsburg was Akeem Satterfield of Slippery Rock (181 yards, Nov. 10, 2012).
BU TO HOST PA WOUNDED WARRIOR DAY - SEPT. 27The Huskies will pay tribute to the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors with their next home game, Sept. 27 vs. Shippensburg. Donations will be accepted with all proceeds benefitting PA Wounded Warriors.

FROM THE ARCHIVESBy Bloomsburg University Archivist
Bob Dunkelberger
With their 24 points against California, the Huskies have now scored 14 or more points in 50 consecutive games, a school record. The previous high was 33 straight from 1994 to 1997. Saturday’s overtime game was the fourth in Bloomsburg history and third win. The previous three were in 2003, a 35-28 home victory over Kutztown; a 2005 road win, 31-24 at East Stroudsburg; and the only loss 10-7 at home versus Gannon in the final game of 2009. The Huskies have scored 24 points in both games thus far this season. The last time they scored the same number of points in consecutive games was in 2009: 17 versus California and Mercyhurst in games two and three, both wins. The last time 24 points were scored in back-to-back games was in 2008, also victories over California and Mercyhurst. The last year the Hus-kies scored the same number of points in the first two games of a season was in 1978, seven points apiece in losses to Ithaca College and Shippensburg. The upcoming game with Mercyhurst is the 5th in the series between the two schools, dating back to the first meeting in 2008. Bloomsburg’s record in the previous 4 games is 2-2, 1-0 at home and 1-2 on the road.

Paul DarraghH E A D C O A C H • S E C O N D S E A S O NPaul Darragh was named head coach of Bloomsburg University on Dec. 6, 2013 after being ap-pointed as interim head coach in February 2013. Overall he will be starting his 18th season with the Huskies in 2014.
During the 2013 season Darragh led the Huskies to a 10-2 record, a PSAC championship and a berth in the NCAA playoffs as part of the strongest season for any first-year head coach in school history. Following the season he was honored as PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year.
Under Darragh’s leadership, the Huskies had four All-Americans including Harlon Hill Award-winning running back Franklyn Quiteh who was honored as the top player in Division II. Blooms-burg also had national finalists for the Cliff Harris Award (top small school defensive player, Larry Webster), Gene Upshaw Award (lineman of the year, Brian Clarke) and Fred Mitchell Award (top place-kicker, Danny Fisher). Following the season, defensive end Larry Webster became the sixth player in Bloomsburg history to be selected in the NFL Draft as he was picked in the fourth round by the Detroit Lions.
Darragh previously served as the Huskies’ defensive coordinator for 16 years under legendary head coach Danny Hale. Under Darragh’s leadership the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top-half of the PSAC in total defense seven of the past 11 seasons, including back-to-back second place finishes in 2000 and 2001 and a second place in 2009. The Huskies have also ranked among the best in the PSAC in run defense finishing first or second five times, including second in two of the last four seasons.
The 2009 Huskies finished third nationally in scoring defense (13.36/game), pacing the PSAC. BU also led the conference in sacks, ranking 14th nationally (3.09 per game). In 2010 the Huskies were eighth in Division II in rushing defense (85.38 yards per game). Overall under Darragh’s leader-ship, the Bloomsburg defense finished in the top-15 in NCAA Division II six times since the 2000 season.
Darragh has also coached 58 first team All-PSAC performers, 11 All-Americans and two PSAC East Defensive Players of the Year in Anthony Smith (2009) and Mike Varanavage (2010). Prior to Bloomsburg, Darragh worked for two years at Indiana (PA) as the linebackers coach. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Temple from 1987-89. From there, Darragh coached the linebackers at Northeastern and Gannon before being promoted to defensive coordi-nator at Gannon.
He moved from Gannon to the defensive coordinator post at William Paterson College before join-ing the IUP staff. A three-year starter and captain for Temple, he graduated in 1985 after earning All-East honors as an inside linebacker. Darragh lives in Orangeville with his wife Yelena and are the parents of Sasha, 26, and Lemuel, 24, both graduates of Bloomsburg University, and Gabriel, 13.
