BLOOMSBURG HEAD COACH: Last season as interim head coach, Paul Darragh guided the Huskies to a 10-2 overall record and a PSAC Championship. He was named head coach at Bloomsburg in December 2013 after spending over 16 years as the defensive coordinator (1997-2012) under longtime head coach Danny Hale. Darragh helped mentor the development of current Detroit Lions defensive end Larry Webster, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft after totaling 26.0 sacks in only two years.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Bloomsburg returns 13 starters, including eight on defense, from a team that won the PSAC Championship and made the NCAA Playoffs for the sixth time in the last nine years. The Huskies graduated the nation’s leading rusher and Harlon Hill Award winner in Franklyn Quiteh. However, Bloomsburg rushed for over 200 yards in last week’s season-opener led by 105 rushing yards from senior Eddie Mateo, who rushed for over 1,000 yards in both 2011 and 2012 while splitting carries with Quiteh. At quarterback, junior Tim Kelly returns after being suspended for last week’s opener. Kelly, who is 20-4 as a starter, passed for over 2,000 yards last year and accounted for 23 touchdowns (six rushing). Bloomsburg returns all three starting linebackers from last season when the Huskies led the PSAC in rushing defense at 89.1 yards per game. Senior linebacker Justin Shirk, who led the team with 123 tackles (59 solo) last season, was selected the PSAC East Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday after recording nine stops (five solo), 1.5 TFL, 1.0 sack and two forced fumbles in the season-opener. Junior defensive back Gary Postell was an All-PSAC East selection last year after ranking third on the team with 63 tackles (46 solo) and added seven passes defended. On special teams, the Huskies feature a new kicker following the graduation of Dan Fisher, the PSAC’s all-time leader in field goals.
THIS TIME IT COUNTS: Beginning this season, the PSAC adopted a new rule which counts all league-mandated crossover games (Week 2, Week 3) towards conference records. Previously only games against divisional opponents were reflected in the league standings.
AGAINST THE EAST: Since 2004, Cal U holds a combined 25-8 record against PSAC East opponents with half of the losses coming against Bloomsburg (2-4). Five of the last six contest between the two programs have been decided by a seven points or fewer, including two games in the NCAA Playoffs (2008, 2010). The Vulcans earned a 27-24 win in the last meeting at Redman Stadium, the 2008 NCAA Super Region One Championship, after recovering a fumble inside the red zone with under two minutes remaining.
AGAINST THE TOP 25: This weekend marks the 41st game for the Vulcans against an opponent ranked in the AFCA Top 25 since the start of the 2000 season. During that span, Cal U has posted a 19-21 record against nationally-ranked programs with a 10-12 mark on the road, including three-straight losses (all last year - IUP, West Chester, Slippery Rock).
PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The Vulcans were picked to finish second in the preseason PSAC West poll after receiving three first-place votes. Cal U had earned at least a share of the top spot in the preseason divisional poll every year from 2005-12. Bloomsburg was picked to finish third in the PSAC East after claiming the league title in 2013.
FIRST-TIMERS: In last week’s season-opener, a total of seven different players made their first career start, highlighted by four first-time starters on the defensive line.

2014 Cal U Football Game Notes www.calvulcans.com
‘NU’ RECORD: Senior Cody Nuzzo was one of the most active kickers in the country on Saturday, finishing with a career-high 15 points and eight kickoffs against Virginia State. In the victory, he broke the single-game school record with four field goals (26, 20, 26, 26) after previously sharing the record of three field goals with three other kickers. Nuzzo, who led the team in scoring in each of the last two years, also tied the all-time school record of 32 field goals set by Tyler Lorenz (2006-07).
WORTH THE WAIT: Playing his first game since high school, junior transfer Kenny Wilkins made an immediate impact last weekend. He ranked second on the team with nine tackles (four solo) and also registered 3.0 TFL and one forced fumble against Virginia State. Wilkins was a four-star prospect at Trinity High School in nearby Washington, Pa., before attending Michigan (2010-12).
BLOCK CITY: Senior Corey Ford achieved one the rarest feats in football last Saturday in the season-opener. He recorded two blocked punts against Virginia State with one being returned for a touchdown. The Vulcans ranked No. 11 in the country last year with seven blocked kicks, which were the most since the 2006 campaign.
QUICK START: In last week’s season-opener, Cal U and Virginia State combined to score 48 points in the first half with three scoring drives taking less than a minute. It marked the most combined points in the first half since Cal U and Millersville combined to tally 49 points in the final game of the 2012 campaign when the Vulcans held a 42-7 lead at halftime.
STERLING BOWMAN: Sophomore defensive back Jordan Bowman scored a touchdown on a blocked punt and registered an interception last week versus Virginia State. Bowman, who also added five tackles (four solo) in the victory, has scored a touchdown and made an interception in each of his last two games dating back to last season. In the final game of 2013, the Central Dauphin product returned a fumble for a touchdown and tallied an interception at Millersville.
SMOOTH DEBUT: An All-PSAC West selection as a return specialist in 2013, senior Terrell Roberson made his college debut at running back last weekend. He led the team with 71 rushing yards, including 59 yards in the second half, on 16 attempts. Roberson started all 11 games at cornerback in 2012 before being utilized primarily as a return specialist last season.
ONE PLAY = SIX POINTS: Cal U posted a pair of one-play touchdown drives in last week’s victory over Virginia State, equaling their total from last season. Sophomore wide receiver Garry Brown scored on a 69-yard touchdown pass from quarterback James Harris early in the second quarter. Just over two minutes later, Harris connected with junior wide receiver Kowan Scott for a 49-yard touchdown. The Vulcans last scored more than one touchdown in a game on a single play of a drive in 2010 (Lock Haven).
GREAT SCOTT: Junior wide receiver Kowan Scott tallied his second career 100-yard game in the season-opener against Virginia State. He finished with 113 receiving yards and one touchdown on six catches (18.8 yards per reception). Scott, who was a state champion in the 300-meter hurdles at Wilson High School in Reading, Pa., enters the weekend with five career touchdown receptions, all of which went for at least 36 yards (39, 44, 68, 36, 44).

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 6) – In a game featuring two lightning delays and a combined 48 first-half points, the Vulcans claimed a 33-24 season-opening victory against Virginia State at Adamson Stadium. Quarterback James Harris finished with a career-high 280 passing yards while making his seventh career start. He completed 15-of-27 attempts with two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Trojans. Harris recorded three lengthy passes in the first half, throwing for 207 yards before halftime behind touchdown passes of 69 and 49 yards. Cal U took a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter when Jordan Bowman returned a blocked punt by Corey Ford for a touchdown. The opening four minutes of the second quarter featured three quick touchdown passes, all nearly at least 50 yards. The Trojans reclaimed the lead on a 60-yard score before Harris connected with wide receiver Garry Brown for a 69-yard touchdown on the opening play of the ensuing drive. Cal U forced a three-and-out before stretching the lead to 24-14 on another one-play touchdown drive, as Harris found wide receiver Kowan Scott for a 49-yard score with 12:26 left before halftime. Linebacker Branko Busick led the team and tied his career high with 10 tackles, while defensive lineman Kenny Wilkins tallied nine stops and 3.0 TFL in his college debut.
