EDINBORO HEAD COACH: After a 20-year career as an assistant coach with the Fighting Scots, Scott Browning has posted a 54-38 overall record in nine seasons as head coach. He is tied for second place in school history with 54 career victories, highlighted by back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2008 and 2009. Browning has been a member of the coaching staff on all eight of Edinboro’s appearances in the NCAA Playoffs (last 2009).
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING SCOTS: Edinboro returns 10 starters from a team that finished with a 5-6 record last year, marking only the second losing season for the program in the last decade. On offense, the Fighting Scots are headlined by the return of redshirt senior Cody Harris, who played only two games last year before suffering a season-ending injury. He leads the PSAC with a 74.3 completion percentage (78-of-105) while throwing only one interception. Wide receiver Darren Massey, the 2013 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, has posted back-to-back 100-yard games and caught at least one touchdown every game this season. Freshman Anfreenee Williams leads the team with 190 rushing yards after recording his first career 100-yard game last week. Defensively, Edinboro has struggled through the opening weeks of the season, ranking in the bottom three of the 16-team PSAC in scoring defense (44.0 points/game), total defense (528.0 yards/game), rushing defense (225.3 yards/game) and passing defense (302.7 yards/game). Junior linebacker Mike Shansky leads the team with 25 tackles (10 solo) after earning All-PSAC West laurels last season. Fellow junior Domenic Principale has registered 1.0 sack every game this season and has forced three fumbles. On special teams, sophomore O’Sha Jackson leads the league with 294 kickoff return yards while averaging 24.5 yards/return. The Fighting Scots are utilizing a pair of punters in sophomore Connor Hollenbeck and redshirt freshman Paul Ortiz, while Ortiz also serves as the team’s kicker.
THIS TIME IT COUNTS: With the PSAC adopting a new rule this season, all 16 league teams have already played two games (Week 2, Week 3) that are reflected in the league standings. Previously, only games against divisional opponents counted in the PSAC standings.
OPENING THE WEST: Cal U has won its last nine, and 10 of its last 14, divisional-opening games. Since 2005, the Vulcans have won in dominating fashion in their openers against PSAC West opponents, beating divisional foes by an average score of 38-11. Cal U has limited opponents to 14 points or less in all but one of the last nine divisional openers.
PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The Vulcans were picked to finish second in the preseason PSAC West poll after receiving three first-place votes. Cal U had earned at least a share of the top spot in the preseason divisional poll every year from 2005-12. Edinboro was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC West after posting back-to-back losing seasons.
NEARLY A RECORD: Junior quarterback James Harris posted one of the most prolific passing performances in school history last week. He passed for 439 yards on 24-of-33 attempts with two touchdowns in the victory at Shippensburg. Harris became only the fifth quarterback in school history to eclipse 400 passing yards in a game, finishing only four yards shy of tying the single-game school record set by Kevin McCabe in 2008.
FRIENDLY CONFINES: Cal U has posted a 50-10 overall record (.833) at Adamson Stadium since 2005, highlighted by a 27-3 mark (.900) in PSAC West play.

2014 Cal U Football Game Notes www.calvulcans.com
LIKE A VIDEO GAME: Last week, Cal U and Shippensburg combined to amass an incredible 1,179 yards of total offense while running 167 plays. The Vulcans totaled 660 yards of total offense in the victory, marking their highest single-game total since the 2005 season. The last time Cal U played in a game with at least 1,000 yards of combined total offense was the 2009 NCAA Semifinals at Northwest Missouri State (1,007 yards).
PICKING UP CHUNKS: In last week’s victory, the Vulcans posted nine offensive plays that went for at least 20 yards with three resulting in touchdowns. Cal U tallied four ‘explosive plays’ (page 11) in each of the opening two weeks of the season. Wide receivers Garry Brown and Kowan Scott have both made six ‘explosive plays’ with three touchdowns by Scott going for at least 20 yards.
DUAL HAT TRICKS: Senior Terrell Roberson and sophomore Nick Grissom both rushed for three touchdowns in last week’s win at Shippensburg. The Vulcans entered the game without a rushing score through the opening two games this season. Grissom registered the first 100-yard game of his career, finishing with 139 yards and on 19 attempts, and scored three rushing touchdowns for the second time in his career. A former defensive back, Roberson set a career high with 89 rushing yards and three scores on 14 carries.
HE’S BACK: Edinboro features one of the most veteran quarterbacks in the country this season in redshirt senior Cody Harris. He has passed for over 550 yards and completed over 72 percent of his passes in his last two starts against the Vulcans. Harris, whose brother Trevor was the quarterback for the Fighting Scots from 2006-09, received a sixth year of eligibility after suffering a season-ending injury in the second game of last season.
BROWN DELIVERS: Sophomore Garry Brown registered one of the top receiving games in school history last week while making his third career start. He tallied the sixth-highest receiving yard total in school history, finishing with 190 yards after making four catches of at least 20 yards. Brown also became the ninth player in program history to post at least 10 receptions in a single game. The Columbus, Ohio native ranks second in the PSAC this season with 357 receiving yards while averaging 18.8 yards/reception.
BACK IN THE FOLD: Senior linebacker Spencer Lynn ranks second on the team with 25 tackles (11 solo) this season while starting for the first time since the 2012 campaign. He led the team with eight stops (four solo) and added a forced fumble and one pass break-up last week at Shippensburg. Lynn made 90 tackles (36 solo) while starting all 13 games as a redshirt freshman in 2011 before playing primarily as a reserve and on special teams. The Belle Vernon product led the team with 15 stops (seven solo) on special teams last season.
BLOCK PARTY: For the second time in three weeks, the Vulcans blocked a pair of kicks last weekend at Shippensburg. Senior Corey Ford blocked a punt in Red Raiders territory early in the fourth with the Vulcans scoring a touchdown on the second play of the ensuing drive. Junior Rodney Gillin later blocked a PAT attempt with four minutes remaining in the game. Cal U has blocked a combined four kicks (three punts, one PAT) this season and ranks second in the country behind only Pace (N.Y.), who has five blocks in three games. Ford is one of four players in all NCAA divisions this year with three blocked kicks.

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 6) – In a game featuring two lightning delays and a combined 48 first-half points, the Vulcans claimed a 33-24 season-opening victory against Virginia State at Adamson Stadium. Quarterback James Harris finished with a career-high 280 passing yards while making his seventh career start. He completed 15-of-27 attempts with two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Trojans. Harris recorded three lengthy passes in the first half, throwing for 207 yards before halftime behind touchdown passes of 69 and 49 yards. Cal U took a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter when Jordan Bowman returned a blocked punt by Corey Ford for a touchdown.
