“The Engineering Design Process”

A Quick Lesson about the Bernoulli Effect

Test & Evaluate

Introduce the students to the Bernoulli Effect via the Bill Nye video, “Flight”• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZpEfqxVvVs

Tell the students that they will be conducting a series of flight experiments in which they will explore the Bernoulli “Effect” Principle.

Allow each student to select different models of plane from Future Flight Design page:• To gain a concrete understanding of the Bernoulli Effect• To test the flying distance between the different paper models • http://futureflight.arc.nasa.gov/designs/

Students will participate in the engineering design process as they test their planes.

Students will collect data regarding the flight distance.

Students will collect data to see the connection between the plane models and flying distance.

Student Driving Their Own Learning

After some research the students found additional plane making tutorials:• http://www.funpaperairplanes.com/index.html

• Students may begin to decide to design their own planes from the data they will collect.

• Students will develop video tutorials using the camera app from the iPad to assist their peers in building airplane models.
