Chairperson’s NoteDear reader,

I am delighted to present the latest edition of our student handbook. This handbook will pro-vide you with information regarding the various opportunities within the aviation industry in Ireland and beyond. Inside this booklet, you will find a list of third-level courses, graduate programmes, scholarship opportunities and many more resources which will help your career take flight.

IASA is a student-led initiative, run by a team of dedicated, aviation-passionate third-level students from across Ireland. We aim to bring students and the industry together through various events to help students learn about potential career paths and to provide the oppor-tunity for networking between the present and the future of this rapidly growing industry.

This year has proven to be a challenging year for everyone; students having to adapt to learning from home, companies learning to work from home and the Aviation industry facing unprec-edented challenges due to Covid-19. However, all of us here at IASA continue to support students through these difficult times, with initiatives such as creating an interview series to keep students up to date with how companies were adapting, fundraising over €1,500 for the Irish Community Rapid Response whilst making sure we continued engaging with students through daily Instagram quizzes, our monthly newsletters and weekly blogs.

A year of learning, adapting and overcoming of many challenges, 2020 has strengthened IASA. We hope that 2021 is a year of prosperity, fulfilment and accomplishments… but overall a year of success and happiness for all of our committee members, Industry Advisory committee, Non-executive committee and all students.

I would like to thank a number of people without whom none of this would be possible. First of all, to our sponsors who help fund the association, allow us to continue to grow and enable us to host bigger and better events to support students and the industry. A word of gratitude is due to our Industry Advisory Committee for their support, guidance and assistance through-out the year and finally. Lastly, a wholehearted thank you to the IASA Committee, both past and present, for all of their hard work, long meetings and dedication they have shown year-round. Without the willingness from this incredible group to selflessly volunteer their time and energy, none of this would be possible.

Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions or sign up to our Student Membership platform to get even more benefits from IASA!

We look forward to seeing you at one of our events very shortly.

Daniel Tetis Chairperson

Irish Air Corps Aircraft Trainee TechniciansTechnicians provide the maintenance and servicing of Air Corps aircraft, their engines, systems, equipment and weapons. The Air Corps is looking for young, enthusiastic and technically minded individuals who are looking for the opportunity not just to learn a new trade but also practice it in challenging situations. Trainee Technicians undergo their academic training at the Technical Training School, located in Casement Aerodrome, the home of the Air Corps.

On successful completion of a seven (7) month military training course, the trainee technician will commence their academic studies.

The Technical Training Programme is a whole-time programme of three and a half years duration.

The Air Corps Technical Training School is EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) approved and approved by TU Dublin to deliver the Bachelor of Engineering Technology Degree in Military Aviation Technology.

The EASA modules (Theory and Workshop Practical’s) and their associated examinations are completed entirely, prior to the trainees’ advancement through advanced access onto the Bachelor Engineering Technology Degree in Military Aviation Technology.

Training

The Aircraft Trainee Technician Programme is approx-imately 4 and a half years (4.5) years in duration. The initial seven (7) months is spent in military training learn-ing the basics of soldiering. Thereafter the technical training programme, incorporating the EASA and the degree programmes, is delivered in the Technical Training School.

Pilot Training Schools

There are many Registered Training Facilities and Approved Training Organisations located throughout Ireland which take on people as young as 16 and train them towards their pilot’s license.

The initial pilots license, the Private Pilots License can be obtained via either a Registered Training Facility or Approved Training Organisation (ATO), but to gain a Commercial Pilot’s License, then you must train solely

with an ATO. Ireland’s two primary ATO’s are the Atlantic Flight Training Academy and the National Flight Centre. The cost involved in gaining a pilot’s license is substan-tial and research should be carried out to identify the reputation and financial standing of the flight training school that you choose.

Atlantic Flight Training Academy (AFTA)

Founded in 1995, Atlantic Flight Training Academy is Ireland’s Premiere Flight Training Organisation.

They have provided in excess of 2,100 in house trained commercial pilots to Europe’s airlines. AFTA has been the market leader due to its location at Cork International Airport which provides the ideal commer-cial environment for pilot training as well as the most competitive rates. AFTA are in constant communication with the industry to ensure that students will get the best opportunities when they have finished their train-ing. AFTA has developed an enviable reputation for delivering highly trained pilots to the airlines.

These include the world’s leading airlines: Ryanair, Stobart Air, Aer Lingus, easyJet, British Airways, Air Astana, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways and Cathay Pacific. Whether you are learning to fly for a career in aviation, or for recreation, you can be assured that you will be trained to the very highest standards at Atlantic Flight Centre. This is made pos-sible with their experienced team who are dedicated to helping you learn the skills, acquire the knowledge and build the confidence required to land your dream job. If

you have any queries on any of their services or training courses, please call AFTA on 021-4888737.

National Flight Centre

NFC was founded by Captain Kieran O’Connor, an experienced airline pilot and probably one of the most licensed pilots in Europe. Kieran holds Licences for single engines, multi engines, seaplanes, helicopters, a number of heavy jets including Boeing 707 and 727, a wide range of corporate jet types. In addition, he currently works as a Flight Examiner for the Irish Aviation Authority and previously as an Air Traffic Controller.

The National Flight Centre has been teaching pilots for over thirty years. They have established links with the world’s largest and most successful airlines. Indeed, many of their graduates now hold training positions in these airlines. They are a quality training college focused on providing the optimum in training and facilities for their students.

They can provide the entire range of courses from Private Pilot to Airline Pilot as well as Instructor Ratings. The pace of your training is completely your own choice. Many students fly full time five or six days a week while others stick to just flying on weekends. This allows many students to fit their flying around their family or full-time job. NFC operates a “pay as you go” system so there is no need to pay large amounts of money up front. After qualifying for the PPL, students are welcome to rent aircraft from the school for hour building.

Pilot Cadetships

Airlines such as Aer Lingus and the Irish Military Air Corps sometimes run pilot cadetships when they have a recruitment need.

These cadetships involve the company fully or partially funding your pilot training, and guaranteeing a job upon successful completion. The application process for these cadetships is a challenging and intense process involving a series of aptitude tests, interviews and group exercises. Although competition is fierce, they do generally consider students with a minimum of a Leaving Certificate.

Other Opportunities The Council of European Aerospace Societies (CEAS) is an International Non-Profit Association, with the aim to develop a framework within which the major Aerospace Societies in Europe can work together. Following its establishment as a legal entity conferred under Belgium Law, this association began its opera-tions on January 1st, 2007. Its basic mission is to add value at a European level to the wide range of services provided by the constituent Member Societies, allowing for greater dialogue between the latter and the European institutions, governments, aerospace and defence industries and academia.

The Company’s flying scholar-ships provide a unique opportu-nity for people who would like to become pilots or to further their qualifications as pilots. We try to arrange the selection period to avoid school/university examina-tion times, whilst still providing candidates with as many months of potential good weather as we can to com-plete their training.

The Wings Club Scholarship Fund was established to encour-age education in aviation and aerospace. The fund helps today’s students become tomorrow’s leaders. Its objec-tive is to foster educational opportunities for individuals pursuing an education in the field of aviation through making grants to educational institutions for the estab-lishment of student grants and loans.

The International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading Foundation (ISTAT Foundation) was founded in 1994 to provide funds for scholarships, edu-cational programs and grants to qualified individuals and institutions that promote the advancement of commercial aviation and humanitarianism. Funding for ISTAT Foundation programs is provided by annual grants from ISTAT and contributions from individuals and com-panies. The ISTAT Foundation Board of Trustees is responsible for fund raising and the selection of pro-grams that meet the Foundation’s objectives.

The ISTAT University programme, ISTAT U 2.0 is avail-able, by way of a web-based format, to recent bache-lor’s degree graduates or above with an interest in aviation leasing and financing, but have no industry experience. Interested candidates can apply in the spring up until two weeks prior to the start date of the first course. Three courses are offered between October and May; course one runs from October – December, course two runs from January – March and course three runs from March – May. The three courses must be completed in the specified order as each course is a pre-requisite for the following course. Upon completion of all three courses, students will receive a program completion certificate. For more information, visit foundation.istat.org or con-tact [email protected].

The Royal Aeronautical Society’s membership spans across Europe and the rest of the world and has a thriving population of young members studying or starting their careers in aerospace. The RAeS Young Persons Network aims to enable young people to become more visible and actively engage with the aerospace industry and participate in Society activities as part of continuous professional development. This is a wonderful opportu-nity to attend specialist events, network with your peers, build business contacts and develop key skills.

It has been recognized by the international aviation community that there will be an anticipated shortage of skilled aviation professionals soon. To address this important issue, ICAO launched the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) initiative to ensure that enough qualified and competent aviation professionals are available to operate, manage and maintain the future international air transport system.

Wo m e n i n Av i a t i o n , International is the fastest growing aviation organization dedicated to encouraging young people to consider aviation careers as well as providing networking opportunities for women and men through the aviation industry. Our members represent the broad scope of aviation – general, corporate, commercial and military. WAI members include aeronautical engineers, pilots, maintenance technicians, educators, air traffic controllers, avionics technicians, airport managers, business owners, dispatchers, artists, students, flight attendants and enthusiasts.

Since 1963, members from a single professional society have achieved virtually every milestone in modern

American flight. That society is the American Institute of A e r o n a u t i c s a n d Astronautics. With more than 30,000 individual mem-bers from 88 countries, and 95 corporate members, AIAA is the world’s largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession. AIAA carries forth a proud tradition of more than 80 years of aerospace leadership. This is the place for everything, from explor-ing their history and purpose … to catching up on the latest news … Make sure you check out their prestigious Honors & Awards programs. Recognizing excellence is one the most important contributions they make. Serving this elite audience and its historic mission is a commitment and their privilege.

Since a young age, I was always infatuated with aviation. The highlight of my childhood holidays was always arriving to the airport and the flight that followed. Subsequently, I knew that I had to pursue a career as a pilot. Upon completing my leaving certificate in 2017, I decided that undertaking a degree prior to flight training was the best option. I was fortunate enough to receive a place on the BSc in Aviation Management course in DCU. This course was the perfect fit for me as it allowed me to study aviation focused modules alongside like-minded individuals. Throughout the course, I was able to become an active member of the DCU Aviation Society, study towards my private pilot’s license and complete a year-long internship in Ryanair’s Flight Operations Department. I would highly recommend the course to anyone considering a career within aviation!

It was during my first semester in college that I attended IASAs 3rd annual symposium at the Crowne Plaza in Dublin Airport. I remember being blown away at how a group of aviation students could run such a professional and successful event. I remember leaving the event knowing I wanted to contribute to the success of future events.

I joined IASA the following year as a Student Engagement Officer. This role allowed me to engage with both second and third level students at school talks and career fairs, contribute monthly blog pieces to the IASA website and travel abroad to promote IASA outside of Ireland. After spending a year as a Student Engagement Officer, I moved onto the management committee as Head of Engagement. This challenging role gave me the opportunity to manage a team and allowed me to have more of a say in how IASA was run. I would highly recommend anyone who has the commitment and desire to join IASA. It has contributed majorly to my own personal development throughout college but more importantly it has given me friends for life!

My journey into Aviation was a little backwards and not the norm. Having completed my Leaving Cert in 2015 I failed to obtain a place in the BSc Aviation Management course in DCU, at the time this was the only aviation business related course in Ireland, I thought it was the be all and end all. Shortly after this I was offered a place in the National College Of Ireland, studying marketing. Having always had aviation at the back of my mind, I began to research back door options into the industry. IASA was the main platform that enabled me to understand the different career paths within the aviation industry and subsequently this was what inspired me to apply for the MSc in Aviation Leadership at DCU. Having secured a place in the MSAL course at DCU I quickly began to realise that I had an interest in the airport planning field. Having completed a research topic on airport accessibility & infrastructure I subsequently secured a role with Arup on the airport planning team, where I have worked on several projects for Dublin and Shannon Airport. I encourage all students who have a passion for aviation to join IASA.

My journey started with taking flight lessons at NFC in Weston Airport. After com-pleting a year of lessons, I was sure the aviation industry was for me. I had a keen interest in the operation of the aircraft, so I applied to IT Carlow to study their BEng Aircraft Systems. This degree programme offered me the opportunity to develop skills I never imagined I would obtain, from machining and manufacturing, aircraft maintenance knowledge and circuit design to soldering.

After my second year at IT Carlow I realised I wanted to continue to study and decided to apply to study Aerospace Engineering at Queens University Belfast. Between finishing IT Carlow and starting at Queens, I took on an internship with CIT Aerospace working along with their technical team and gaining invaluable experience. I spent the following summer between year one and year two at Queens as in intern, this time in SMBC AC. This allowed me the opportunity to apply some of the skills I had learned the previous year while learning about another company’s culture and getting real responsibility within a number of teams in the company.

I completed my degree at Queens in 2018 and joined Genesis Aircraft Leasing. Since joining Genesis I have been given the opportunity to travel internationally to meet with customers as part of the commercial team, but have since moved to a pricing analyst role, where I am responsible for underwriting and pricing of aircraft for operating lease re-marketing, and sale. The Industry is big, exciting and right on your doorstep. Take every opportunity you can get, find a mentor that will give you guidance, and be open minded about where you could go in the future.

It was the wonder of flight that drew me to my love for aviation. I was fascinated and enthralled by aeroplanes and loved being inside them. Since I was little, I loved hearing the words, “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome aboard”, coming from the cockpit. Even then, I knew I always wanted to have a career in aviation. Our little island has shown considerable growth since the birth of commercial aviation in the early 20th century. Our expertise, the pool of talent, favourable tax, and track record are key elements that have turned Ireland into a global aviation hub. Since its inception in 2015, IASA has significantly become a key player within the aviation industry by bridging the gap between students and the industry in Ireland and beyond. I proudly joined IASA in April 2017, as a Student Engagement Officer and worked my way up to Chairperson. These two roles gave me countless opportunities to work alongside an amazing committee, network with like-minded individuals, attend industry events and enhance my professional development. Throughout my studies, I was very fortunate to secure two internships at Airbus Flight Hour Services and Peak Performance Recruitment. These roles provided me with a broader understanding and knowledge of the industry which I found fulfilling and rewarding in every way. Lastly, during my final year, I worked as a Crew Tracker at Norwegian Air International. I worked alongside a very experienced team from across parts of the globe which gave me valuable experience and a great insight into flight operations. The best part of the job was that every day brought new challenges and excitement. Looking back now, being a part of IASA has been one of the greatest honours of my life and has given me great memories that will last a lifetime. I would highly recommend anyone who has the commitment, dedication, and passion for aviation to join IASA. IASA has given me an in-depth knowledge of the aviation industry, the necessary life skills and lifelong friends. I wholeheartedly believe in IASA’s mission of empowering the next generation of aviation professionals. IASA is here to support you; by providing networking opportunities and pointing you in the right direction for any question you may have.
