Hello Everybody—I’m happy to be reporting back to you on our

return from an exceptionally well-run National Square Dance Convention in Atlanta. My thanks go out to the convention General Chairman, Louis and Angie McClure for organizing this truly memorable event. Pam Bailis has a report on the High Fliers tour group in this issue, so I will simply say that we had a great time.

The South Eastern states are green and wet and beautiful this time of year. This trip, however, reminded me that prior to joining A

Square D my view of this great country of ours was very limited. I was born and raised in Iowa and came to California when I was 20 years old. I was hired by Hughes Aircraft Company and spent the next 35 years vacationing either in California or visiting relatives in Iowa. Upon retirement I bought a horse, and spent the next 20 years taking care of geriatric horses.

I had always managed to find time to square dance but with leisure I encountered A Square D. Being on the A Square D board pretty much dictated that my vacation travel would be square-dance related. I couldn’t be happier! Tying vacations to National Conventions had opened up a whole new world for me, and I have been led to cities that I would never have thought to visit on my own. Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Springfield (Massachusetts), Little Rock, Cincinnati, Des Moines, and now Atlanta as seen through the eyes of square dancers has been truly delightful.

California has always been a leader in state-support of our national conventions. Although this is evidenced by our own local conventions in Anaheim and Long Beach, the state presence in conventions on both coasts is consistently in the top four in dancer attendance leaders. For those of you who have never attended a national convention, you should consider a trip up the west coast next year for the 69th convention in Spokane, Washington, June 17–20, 2020. The city has apologized to the square dance community for the unfortunate scheduling of an outdoor basketball convention at the same time as our 61st National Convention in 2012. They made their bid for the 69th National Convention to bring square dancing back to the area with full support for the dancers. We hope to get good turnout in thanks for the city’s efforts.—Alan Lubberts

A Square D Club Happenings:Boots & Bows

We were fortunate to offer dancers the opportunity to workshop Mainstream Hex Squares with Andy Allemao prior to our July 20th dance.  The workshop provided much fun for dancers comfortable with Mainstream calls.

We held our annual potluck picnic at Paradise Park in Torrance on August 10th.  It was well attended and everyone had a good time.

On August 7 we continued our tradition of supporting the Torrance Sister City Square Dance and Chili Cook-Off.  Every July since 1974 Torrance has sent a group of approximately eight students to Kashiwa Japan for three weeks.  In August, Kashiwa sends a group to Torrance.  The students stay with host families and experience our culture and way of life.  This includes participating in some simple square dancing, partaking of wonderful food, and lots of fun for all attendees.

Please join us at the Riviera United Methodist Church at 375 Palos Verdes Blvd. in Redondo Beach for these upcoming dances: Our September 21st Autumn Leaves Mostly Mainstream dance is with Steve Woodard, our October 19th Octoberfest is with Michael Kellogg, and our November 16th Pies a Plenty is with Michael Haworth. Judy Keller cues the rounds.Boots & Slippers

We had a great year with returning and new class members at plus and student dances. Our annual Guide Dog Dance fund raiser provided another puppy for the program. In June we welcomed our new members at their graduation dance.

During the Summer months, our wonderful teacher Dick Hodenfield provides opportunities on Monday nights to hone learned skills in workshops

We look forward to welcoming new class members on September 9th at “A Special and Fun Intro to Square Dancing Party” at 6:30 p.m. The event will include a potluck dinner. Everyone is invited and it is free, as are the first two lessons, for beginners. We have given “invite” packets to all members to help facilitate the recruiting of new dancers.

We look forward to a great year of dancing and friendship ahead!Buckles & Bows Our amazing 25 graduates are now dancing with us during the summer workshops and dances.  Our 10-week summer workshop [had] between 12 and 14 squares each Tuesday, dancing to the wonderful calling of Mike Seastrom and any guests of his who care to join him.  Rick Gittleman and Dick Hodnefield were two such visitors.  Our last workshop was Tuesday, August 13.      Our Tuesday workshops (7–9 p.m.) and 4th Saturday dances are held at the Goebel Adult Community Center in Thousand Oaks.  At the monthly dance we have pre-rounds from 6:30–7:30 p.m., with tips from 7:30–10 p.m.  We also add an Advance tip at 10 p.m.

Our May dance saw Andy Allemao calling a HEX workshop from 5:30–7 p.m., Gus on the rounds until 7:30, and our Plus-level dance until 10.  There is always a HEX Star Tip mid dance and an Advanced tip at 10.  This year›s dance was very popular, with 10 HEX “squares” at 5:30.      We participate in numerous activities in the community, sometimes those being fund raisers for worthy causes.      In April, we helped sponsor a fund raiser for local girl scouts.  It was a beginners’ dance, with new dancers enjoying the camaraderie of all there, and the calling/instructions of Mike Seastrom, who donated his time.  The proceeds went to the Many Mansions charity.        Our big dance of the year is our very popular Sea Breeze Dance, held on the 2nd Sunday afternoon in August, this year on August 11, from 2–5:30 p.m.  This dance includes a nice dinner, multiple basket raffles and a silent auction.  Buddy Weaver is the caller, with Gus and Lynn on the rounds.  It includes a mid-dance A-1 tip, and another Advance tip with a bit of A-2 thrown in, at the close of the dance at 5:30 p.m.      Our next class begins the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, September 3, at the Goebel Adult Community Center.  We anticipate having the usual eager beavers to start, dropping off to between 20–30 graduates at the end of the year in May.      Our fall dances include Jay Henderson on September 28th, Ken Bower on October 26th, and Mike Sikorsky and his famous Hot Hash Star tip on November 23rd. Come join the fun.  We would love to have you.Buttons & Bows We start our new class on Thursday, September 12 at Temple Beth ikvah, 1600 N. Acacia Ave, Fullerton, CA 92831. Dennis Young is our class caller/instructor.

Callers for our up-coming dances are: September 7,  Mike Hogan will be calling our Ahoy Mately! dance; October 5, Shauna Kaaria will be calling World Series; November 2, David Mee will call for our 60th Anniversary, and December 7, Steve Moore will be calling the Winter Wonderland dance.

We are a fun club with popular callers and Judy Keller-Smith will cue our rounds.  Come and enjoy our continuous food bar.  Visit us soon at El Rancho Charter School, 181 S. Del Giorgio, Anaheim Hills, CA.

Please contact one of our Buttons & Bows Co-Presidents with questions or comments. Kathy: 714-870-4409  or  Sheri: 714-924-0303 / [email protected]

Camping Squares Camping Squares is a fun camping group of square dancers camping on the first Saturday weekend of every month. We normally have activities such as games, area shopping and/or sight-seeing, and usually dining at a local restaurant on Friday, etc. All activities are voluntary with everyone doing whatever they desire to do. There is a potluck and dancing on Saturday night. We usually camp with in a 100-mile radius of Disneyland.

Our upcoming camp-outs are Launch Point on September 5th – 8th in Lake Elsinore. This is a brand new resort on the lake. Next we will be camping

Page 4: Atlanta, Georgia, National Convention

at Newport Dunes on October 3rd–6th in Newport Beach. We always have a great time at Newport Dunes. Then we will be going to Sam’s Family Spa’s on Oct 31st – November 3rd in Desert Hot Springs. Besides a naturally heated pool, Sam’s Family Spa’s has four “4” naturally headed spa’s at four different temperatures. All campers are welcome to come and join us at any time. Reservations are needed (most of the time) a month in advance with a deposit of $50. For information and/or reservations call Cheri at 714-534-3968. We look forward to having visitors joining us. Church Mice

Our students have enjoyed a Plus workshop Sunday nights through August. Graduation was on August 18th and they’re ready to Angel at our new class that begins September 8th.   We had a lot of summer fun: Some of the Mice enjoyed the B&B’s Anniversary cruise to Ensenada with Buddy Weaver and Bill Berry. We installed our new board officers with a pirate theme with fun props including pirate flags for all members and we committed to supporting our new officers.  We celebrated the 4th of July by square dancing in a parade in Tustin and a BBQ at our new “Big Cheese’s” house. It was a fun time.

Callers and cuers for our upcoming dances:  September 21—Rick Gettleman and Bill Berry, October 19—Pat Carnathan and Bill Berry, and November 16—Jay Henderson and Dawn Mee.

We dance on the third Saturdays each month. Check us out on our website www.churchmice.com, and “like” us on our Facebook page.Grin-n-Square It

The Grin-n-Square It will be starting a new class on Tuesday, September 17 at the Elks Hall 2436 Huntington Drive in Duarte. Class is from 7–9 p.m. and is free for the first night. Class is open for the first three weeks. For more information, contact Randy and Pat Thorpe at 626-358-6485. Our club dances on the 3rd Saturday each month in the Senior Center at 3130 Tyler Ave in El Monte. Pre-rounds at 7:30 and square dance 8:00–10:30 p.m. We have a great dance hall with wood floors and we also have terrific refreshments at break.

Our September 21 dance(50’s Dance) with Darren Gallina, October 19 dance (Halloween Bash) with Andy Allemao, and we will be celebrating our 55th Anniversary Dance (great door prizes and also our turkey shoot) on November 16 with Ken Bower. Shauna Kaaria is our cuer for rounds. We have a fund raiser on the third Tuesday of the month at Cabrera’s Mexican Restaurant in Duarte. Just tell the personnel that you are part of the square dance group and write it on your receipt. Check out our website www.grinnsquareit.com for all the latest information about our club.Happy Squares

Church, 4191 Cochran Ave., a new location. It is between Tapo Canyon and Tapo Street in Simi Valley. Our caller/instructor is Rod Shuping, who has been calling for many years and makes each class a fun learning experience. We also have experi-enced dancers we call “angels” to help you through tough spots. Come and join us. Modern square dancing is not what it was when we were in grade school. Our dances are on the second Saturday of each month at the Simi Valley center on 3900 Avenida Simi. Rounds are at 7:15 and square dancing begins at 8:00 until 10:30 p.m. There is an A-1 tip in the middle of the dance. Any more information can be found at HappySquares.com.

Club Happenings (continued from pg. 3)

Our 2019 class begins on Thursday, September 5. It is recommended that new class members arrive at 7:00 p.m. to get registered. Your first three classes are FREE. Classes are every Thursday 7:15–8:45 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley

Lads ‘N’ LassiesWe started the second half of 2019 with our “Firecracker Frolic”

on Saturday, July 6. It was an exceptionally good dance. Buddy Weaver is a consummate caller/entertainer and he made the dance fun by mixing up squares and keeping the energy level high. It is true that a good caller almost always draws a crowd, but a little advertising also goes a long way. Announcements at other clubs, flyers, “Where’s the Dance?,” and Facebook postings helped. In addition, Buddy worked with us and promoted this dance at his class/workshop and our flyer was on his Facebook page. It was great to work with a caller who used his marketing skills to make our dance even more successful.  On Sept. 7, Michael Kellogg is the featured caller for our “Apple Fest” dance. Jim Elder is cueing. This is sure to be fun because Michael is a master of interesting choreography and he also has a fine singing voice. Summer casual attire is welcome but please, no open-toed shoes. Pre-rounds kick off at 7:15 p.m.; squares start at 8 p.m. Donation: $8/each.

Looking ahead, Lads ‘N’ Lassies celebrates its 56th anniversary with our “Happy Birthday” dance on Saturday, Oct. 5. Who doesn’t love a party, especially when Mike Seastrom is the caller? Come and help us put another candle on our cake. Jim Elder starts the pre-rounds at 7:15 p.m.; squares begin at 8 p.m. Donation: $8/per person.  Our “Funday Monday” Plus-level workshop continues. Although attendance is down a bit because of summer vacations, we continue to average 3 squares. Go beyond doing the calls from basic positions. Learn how to do Acey Duecey from facing lines. Caller Rod Shuping encourages questions from the floor and he is happy to review troublesome calls. The ongoing workshop runs from 7:30 –9:30 p.m. Donation is $8/each.

Our September dance will have Dan Preedy from Mead, WA, calling. This is our ice cream social dance, so there will be plenty of goodies for refreshments. There is always a veggie tray for those who’d like to eat healthy snacks. Gus and Lynn DeFore are the cuers for the rounds beginning at 7:15 p.m. Squares are 8:00 –10:30 p.m. Our October 12 Black Light Madness dance will be called by Eric Henerlau from Corte Madera, CA. If you wish your clothes to shine brightly, wear something light or even white. It’s a lot of fun. Gus and Lynn are again the cuers. Our November dance will be dark since most of our members attend the Rivco dance in the desert.-—Marie Gray

High Fliers National Convention in Atlanta 2019by Pamela Bailis

Atlanta, the Peach Tree City, was amazing. We flew in on Saturday June 22, and out on Sunday, June 30. Three and a half days of touring, three and a half days of dancing! What more could we ask for? We began dancing at the Welcome to Atlanta Trail End Dance with Tony Oxendine, Jerry Story, Ken Bower, Gary Shoemake, and Jack Pladdys. Wednesday night was a dinner dinner-show. Our hotel was conveniently connected to the Convention Halls, so it was easy traveling without ever having to go outside into the heat and humidity (which wasn’t so bad this year). Fabulous trip! Did you know that:● City In A Forest The National Forest Service has recognized Atlanta as “the most heavily forested urban area in the country,” covering 47.9% of the city with over 100,000 shade trees planted and distributed through the non-profit ‘Trees Atlanta’.● You Can’t Miss The Peachtrees Atlanta is home to 71 streets with a variation of the word “Peachtree” in their names: Avenue, Plaza, drives, lanes, etc., however, there are no peach trees in Atlanta, nor are peach trees native to the area! The name “peachtree” evolved from “pitch tree,” which is what the native pine trees were called. So take note for next time you listen to Sinatra’s “Peachtree Street” duet with Rosemary Clooney, or the album Peachtree Road by Sir Elton John.● The Rising Phoenix Atlanta is the only city in North America to have been destroyed as an act of war when General Sherman burnt it to the ground in November of 1864. Only 400 buildings survived the razing, but the city rebuilt itself from the ashes — which is why the city symbol is the phoenix.● The Busiest Airport In The World The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has held the title of “world’s busiest airport” for 18 years now. Lots of airports claim to be the world’s busiest, however, its 101 million passengers trumps any “passenger movements” in others around the world. Its terminal is as big as 45 football fields.● Fortune 500 Companies Atlanta ranks third in concentration of the Fortune 500 companies in the USA. Atlanta was founded as a transportation hub at the intersection of two railroad lines in 1837.● The Next Hollywood Georgia now ranks third in the nation in U.S. film production, and first in growth. More television and movie producers are catching on that Atlanta; with attractive tax policies, is the place to film. A few projects that have been shot in the city are: Anchorman 2, The Hunger Games, Driving Miss Daisy, The Walking Dead, The Vampire Diaries, Ant-Man, Furious 7, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Selma, Taken 3, anything on Cartoon Network, and an additional 140 films and TV shows since 2008. Take that, LA and NYC!● The Bank of America Plaza The tallest building in the United States outside of New York City or Chicago is Atlanta’s The Bank of America Plaza at 1,023 feet. One interesting fact is that there are no street-level pedestrian entrances; people

The Next Hollywood! Georgia now ranks third in the nation in U.S. film production, and first in growth. More television and movie producers are catching on that Atlanta; with attrac-tive tax policies, is the place to film. A few projects that have been shot in the city are: Anchorman 2, The Hunger Games, Driving Miss Daisy, The Walking Dead, The Vampire Diaries, Ant-Man, Furious 7, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Selma,Taken 3, any-thing on Cartoon Network, and an additional 140 films and TV shows since 2008. Take that, LA and NYC!

All dances and our Plus-level Workshop are held at Wilkinson Center, 8956 Vanalden Ave., Northridge (1 block East of Tampa/1 block South of Nordhoff). It’s an air-conditioned hall with a wood floor and ample parking. Info: Jim (818) 892-8410 or Jeanne (818) 268-1846.—Joyce StillwellRamblin’ Rogues The Ramblin’ Rogues are very proud of our June graduates who continued dancing all summer long at the Rogues “Summer Workshops”. These weekly workshops give all dancers an opportunity to experience different callers and get more floor time. In order to attract new class members, the Rogues hosted three “Taste of Square Dancing” nights during the summer. We heavily promoted these events on Facebook, Meetup, and several other social media sites, as well as with business cards and flyers. We made sure to capture the contact information of all of our guests, so we can follow up with them before our classes start on September 5. Our classes, workshops, and dances are held at the Norman P. Murray Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo. Ramblin’ Rogues club dances are 7:30–10:00 p.m. with lines instead of rounds. All Plus-level dancers are invited to our September 6 wear blue for the “End of Summer Blues” with Romney. We will celebrate Halloween on October 4, with Darryl Lipscomb at a “Monster Mash. On November 1, Bronc Wise will give “Thanks to our Veterans.” Dance down a “Candy Cane Lane” on December 6 with Sandie Bryant calling. For more information or for visitations, please call 714-902-9422 or visit our website: RamblinRogues.org.Ribbons & Souls

Our new beginner’s class with the Santa Clarita Parks & Recreation Department began on August 20, and we look forward to another great season and students with Arlen Miller as our instructor.Trail Dusters

In late May our club held its annual weekend getaway where we encourage our class members to attend and meet & mingle with more of our members. This year over 100 Trail and Rail Dusters travelled to “Camp Trail Dusters” at a hotel in Oxnard (really roughing it!!) and the weekend started in style with a dinner and entertainment on Friday evening. Then during the day on Saturday there were various tours to take, or take ukulele lessons, or join one of the many card or Mah-jong games. In the evening another great dinner where each table over the past couple of months had designed the centerpiece for their table—and they ranged from funny to beautiful but all were very creative! This was followed by a hilarious skit written and performed by many of the Trail Dusters. The weekend was voted another overwhelming success all who attended.

On June 12 our club held a Dinner & Graduation Dance for the class of 2018–19. The evening kicked off at 6:00 p.m. sharp with a catered dinner, which also included desserts and beverages. Promptly at 7:00 the Graduate Parade entered the dance hall and proceeded to the stage where our class coordinators, Randee Samsky and Mark Cutter, introduced the 11 graduates to the membership and presented them with their diplomas. Then the graduates entertained us with a hilarious skit written and performed by themselves and narrated by our club caller,

Talk about looking for younger people to experience square dancing, we had guests as young as four years old dancing up a storm. FUTURE NATIONAL SQUARE DANCE CONVENTIONS JUNE 17-20, 2020: SPOKANE, WA JUNE 23–26, 2021: JACKSON, MS

Marketing Classes at National The 68th National Square Dance Convention was awesome

and we had a great time. Over 4000 dancers from all over the world attended. There was so much to do. Dancing was everywhere. There were squares, rounds, contra, lines dance workshops and the Ghost Riders Square Dance Band played every night. There were also sewing exhibits, the showcase of ideas, square dance vendors, a fashion show, and education classes. Every convention has an education program and Alan Lubberts and I attended classes seeking information that would be helpful to the square dance community. This time, we concentrated on marketing and the overall concept of promoting our activity. We attended classes entitled Recruiting New Dancers, Promotion & Financial Aid, Marketing Your Club and a round table panel on “But We’ve Always Done It That Way.” We also went to the Keynote Speech by caller Tony Oxendine entitled “Lead, Follow, Or Get Out of the Way. Pay it forward Along the way.“

Tony’s speech emphasized that it is urgent for the dance community to make radical changes to our operations. In order to survive, square dancing must change with the times. He talked about needed changes in the dress code, music, getting people into the “Mainstream” of dancing and multiple class start dates. Tony has spoken about these issues before. However, now it’s time to act.

The marketing classes were terrific and caller Mike Hogan was the presenter. Mike wrote the Callerlab Square Dance Marketing Manual. You can find it on the Callerlab website. It’s a lot to read, and going to the presentations helped to clarify the approach. Be sure to read the Section 5: Sales/Marketing Funnel, an exciting concept.

Mike pointed out that we need to be clear about what we are marketing. I thought, we know what we are marketing! The best activity of all time! We are marketing health, fun, friendship, dancing. What can be better than that?

However, what do folks see when they look at us? What’s our image? We dress funny; we dance to archaic music from the 1960s rock and country. Our logo is a bowlegged cowboy and a silly looking woman dressed in old fashioned clothes, complete with petticoats or other poor images. We offer a once-a-year-very-long class and will not let you dance much until you survive it. Who would want to sign up for that? We need to change?!!

I think that we at ASqD are ahead of the curve. We have identified these issues and discussed them at Board and General Meetings. We have ideas for improvement and some existing traditions such as class level dances. Lutz Moeckel has been leading the ASqD Board toward a marketing project based on Mike Hogan’s manual and all the dancers should consider supporting it. I hope that now we all embrace the need for change and create a desire to strengthen the future

of dancing. We have identified a lot of problems. Let’s work on solutions and implementations. —Fredi Levitt

benefit of raising $$$ for our club at one of our favorite eating places! All members were encouraged to bring potential class members to meet us and to see the friendship square dancing generates.

All are looking forward to another great year with the start of our classes again on Wednesday, September 11.Valley Trailers

If you missed this you missed a great bargain—We had our Almost-Like-New Used Clothing sale on Tuesday, June 18.  All possible accouterments for ladies’ and men’s square dance outfits were on sale with prices ranging from $1–$5.  Everything had been cleaned and pressed by our own Sue and Jose Simental and their army of volunteers.

Since we are on a six-month-per-session schedule, we do not have any time off for “vacation.”  Everyone is doing great. At the end of August, we’ll decide who in Mainstream will be moved up to Plus, and who in Plus will graduate.  Unlike many other clubs, we do not automatically move a person “up.”   Our new Mainstream and Plus classes will commence on the second Tuesday in September (the 10th).  For new dancers, the first two weeks are free for the Mainstream class.  The previous Tuesday will be when the announcements are made on who moves up.

Sue Cohen organizes social events for our club.  Many of our club members meet for lunch and then attend a play.  On May 6 it was about the Life of Patsy Cline.  June 30th was “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” preceded by lunch at Red’s BBQ.  It’s great for everyone to socialize outside of the dances.  Our next event will be a play in Simi Valley in October.  The play is “Mama Mia.”

June 8 featured a fantastic Mystery Bus Tour.  Only Sue Cohen knew where we were going.  Even our president, Don Krall, was in the dark.  26 members of VT attended.  Since we started late afternoon that Saturday, we of course hit traffic.  But that only heightened our anticipation.  Many members joined in several games of Bingo on the bus.  We had dinner at the Golden Corral, after which we proceeded

to our destination: the Shirts ‘n’ Skirts club in Anaheim.  We received many warm greetings from the host club.  Buddy Weaver did his usual great calling, including progressive squares. Valley Trailers hosted the reception for Mike and Lisa Seastrom who married in June.  They were honored at a free square dance at the Wilkinson Center in Northridge with multiple callers honoring Mike and Lisa.

July 20 was our Tiki Luau Club Dance with Pat Carnathan calling. August 17 was our Hot Summer Night Club Dance with Vic Ceder.

We are privileged to have Cindy Mower doing her usual excellent job of calling for our round dancers. “Hello” to everyone from Valley Trailers.Western Weavers

Western Weavers graduated 11 students in June and we are pleased to report that nine of them joined as members. We also had one angel whose wife graduated and join the club as well as a former member rejoin, further increasing our rolls. Our class instructor, Dale Hoppers, joined with Michael Haworth at the first club dance following graduation, celebrating both Dads and Grads.

We held our annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser in May as well a Corner (Continues on page 20.)

A Square D BoardSale at class one night and clothing sale at the graduation dance, bringing in nearly $600 for the club. Special thanks to Bob and Donna Johnson for allowing us to invade their home for the Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser and to Lydia Duval and Alice Rodriguez for helping with the clothing and Corner sales.

Sadly, all this celebrating did not come without loss as longtime Weaver Fred Hendley passed away in May following a brief illness.

Looking ahead, the club is excited to start another class this September. Our classes are held at the Magnolia Park Methodist Church (2828 West Magnolia Boulevard, Burbank) on Tuesdays, with line dancing from 6:30–7:30 p.m. and square dance instruction from 7:30–9 p.m. Enrollment is free through Sept. 24. Angels from other clubs are welcome and it’s just $4 to dance. Questions? Contact Alice Rodriguez at 818-295-6907. To help promote the class, our president, Kit Wren, secured a display cabinet at the Burbank Central Library to feature square dancing.

The club has been spreading the love around in recent months, with visitations to Major Keys, Sets in Step and Ribbons & Souls. We have visitations scheduled to Valley Trailers (September) and Lads’ N’ Lassies (October). If you are planning on visiting the Western Weavers, especially for our 38th Anniversary Dance & Buffet in October, please drop us a line at [email protected].

Speaking of our anniversary dance, we’re pleased to announce that the great Mike Hogan will be calling for us once again, with Joe Scarlatella doing cuing duties. The dance is Friday, October 11, with rounds starting at 7:30 p.m. (and between tips) and squares from 8–10:30 p.m. Donation is $10 ($9 with a Burbank Senior Activity Card), which covers your dancing and our legendary potluck buffet.

Other dances this quarter include our Beat the Heat dance on Sept. 13 with Dan Preedy (caller) and Joe Scarlatella (cuer); Autumn Harvest on Sept. 27 with Darren Gallina (caller) and Jim Spence (cuer); and Happy Halloween on Oct. 25 with Mike Seastrom (caller) and Jim Spence (cuer).

And our final two dances of the year are exceptional. On Nov. 8, Dick Hodnefield will be calling our Veteran’s Day dance at the Mainstream level while Joe Scarlatella handles the cues. And then, to close out the year, we will have our annual benefit dance to help the Burbank Temporary Aid Center on Dec. 13. As you come to dance to caller Ken Bower and cuer Joe Scarlatella, we ask that you bring canned goods to help our charity.

Connect with us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/westernweavers) and check our photos and videos from our dances. See how many square dancers you recognize and, hopefully, we can feature you soon!

Reminder — 50-50 drawings are illegal in the State of Cali-fornia, and are not sanctioned by A Square D.
